Jameis Watch: Team Glazer-Approved

February 17th, 2015

jameis 1215Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

And so it has come to this: If one is to believe the words typed by former Bucs beat writer and current WalterFootball.com staffer Charlie Campbell, then the biggest puzzle piece regarding whether the Bucs would do the right thing and draft Winston on the night of April 30 has been found.

Per Campbell, Team Glazer has given its blessing to select the former national champion and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. Joe will let Campbell explain the rest.

After speaking with sources in Tampa Bay and around the league, we’ve learned that the Buccaneers’ owners, the Glazers, are comfortable with Winston, and they are on board with the Buccaneers drafting him with the first-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Sources say that entering the interview process, the Glazers want Winston. If he doesn’t do poorly in the interviews and stays out of trouble leading up to the draft, Winston will be the first pick. The Glazers have a huge desire for a franchise quarterback, and have wanted that asset for years. Some sources say that the Glazers believe that Winston is that caliber of quarterback, and they want him to lead a resurgence in Tampa Bay like he did at Florida State.

There is really not much more to add here.

This means the only speedbump preventing Winston from becoming a Buccaneer would be Winston himself.

Joe is not going to dismiss Campbell’s report and Internet garbage. He has solid Bucs sources from his days working the beat and, in the past, Campbell has been pretty spot on when it comes to Bucs tidbits while typing for WalterFootball.com.

I can imagine you typing this with your eyes bulging out and breathing heavily, Joe.

  2. Nybucsfan Says:

Who is the source? Charles manson?lol I’m sure rape is an issue. For most people it is anyway. It’s there money but I don’t know if you invest on something that you lose money from day one. I still hope he goes to jail before the draft.

  3. MadMax Says:

I just hope he gets his Center, Cam Irving….and we’ll have to trade back into the 1st for him.

Im good with it, but I think he’ll need to sit out at least 6 or more games to give him time to adjust to nfl speed.

  4. Dave Pear Says:

As the late great Sports Editor, Tom McEwen would like to write in his Breakfast Bonus columns-
“Over a single slice of slightly buttered whole-wheat toast, two eggs sunny side up, three very crisp slices of bacon, a couple of ripe red Ruskin tomatoes, a chilled glass of Florida OJ, finished with a cup of cafe con leche…”
The choice of whom the Buccaneers should take with the #1 pick is obvious.
    It is Jameis Winston.
    It’s as simple as that.

  5. MadMax Says:

We really cant afford to miss on this. But our 1st round history is just as crappy as our win/loss record over the years:

2014 – Evans, so far so good, looks like a hit

2013 – Wasted in the Revis trade

    2012 – Wasted on Barron

2011 – Clayborn, not exactly wasted, but a bummer he’s not better

2010 – GMC, hit on that one

    2009 – Freeman, uhg!

    2008 – Talib, another waste

2007- Adams, looked promising at first, but traded for a 2nd, both 2nds that year ended up a waste

    So we’re 2 for the last 8 🙁

  6. Big Irish Says:

    Yo Ho toil and trouble
    All around Tampa Bay
    We’re the worst
    But we pick first
    JW will save the day!

  7. VeeJay24 Says:

Hey Joe, I want you to save the IP addresses for all these clowns like NYBucsFan, Mr. Patrick, BuccaneerBonzai. I don’t care where you save it: a hard drive, the cloud, whatever. I just want to know who these jokers are when they try jump on the Jameis bandwagon when he brings the Bucs back to respectability.

NYBucsFan, just find a new team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Luther Says:

VeeJay, we all use dhcp so your current ip means nothing.

  9. Espo Says:

    @NYBucs fan

I’m sure rape is an issue, as it should be. Since there was no rape, there shouldn’t be an issue. Enough SAT studying for now, I’ll give myself an aneurysm.

  10. Espo Says:

I still hope some fool trades away their future and their future’s future for that pick. Otherwise, Jameis is our guy.

  11. VeeJay24 Says:

    too bad!!!!!

  12. Jacko101 Says:

I hope this is not true, I just dont trust the guy

  13. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    LOL at the Winston haters

  14. MadMax Says:

Lol, save IP’s VeeJay? Like Luther pointed out, most posting here will change, but Im sure Joe wont make time for that even if he could. People have opinions, let it go.

  15. Dreambig Says:

    @NYBucsfan,
“I still hope he goes to jail before the draft.”

Well after two investigations by Tallahassee police department, one by the States attorneys office, one by an independent retired state Supreme Court judge, all of which found no compelling evidence. You can hope the tooth fairy leaves you $100 under your pillow tonight because that is about as likely as Jamis being in jail by draft day. Tankfully in this country you actually have to be charged with a crime first, you know, like by real police officers, not by media personnel or special interest organizations.

  16. JFat Says:

    Charlie Campbell mock last year:

“Tampa Bay lands their future franchise quarterback for Lovie Smith. Manziel is a good fit in Jeff Tedford’s offense. With Lovie Smith and Josh McCown’s Texas roots, they can work with Manziel and teach him to be a pro. Plus, ownership would love Manziel considering the Buccaneers have struggled to sell tickets since firing Jon Gruden.”

All this crap is speculation, sources or not, don’t get too hyped up over this Winstonites. Could easily be a smoke screen.

  17. e2unes Says:

Lol why would you need a smokescreen with the number 1 pick?

  18. bk Says:

    Internet garbage.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    The big “if” still remains….

  20. BobSmith Says:

    @Luther
    @MadMax

Wow your IP’s change? Doubt you are running proxy servers to mask your IP address. DHCP is just for your router to hand off an IP address so your computer, ipad, printer, etc can work on your home network. When you submit a message, pay a bill, book a hotel, etc it registers your network IP address. This address doesn’t really change and if it does can still be traced back to you through geo location software. Since you don’t know about this and you don’t know about football you guys should go talk smack on the food network or some place else.

  21. Barry Says:

Are they also on board drafting Mariota? Oh, the desperation seeping through in these articles. Don’t buy this people. What are the Glazers supposed to say at this point? Show their hand? I don’t think that’s how you play poker. If you believe this then the Bucs will be announcing Winston as their pick, why wouldn’t they?

  22. MadMax Says:

@e2unes, think about it. If a team wants to trade up for a QB that they want, and we’re showing our hand and saying we’re not drafting that QB, then they’re going to focus on trade negotiations with the next team.

  23. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Yeah…remember when you were just out on your your own making decisions for yourself and your parents or someone older you repspected responded to advice you were seeking…..it’s your decision …”but”…

  25. MadMax Says:

@Bob, im not going to waste time arguing, so I’ll say this once. If you’re on a computer, pull up a command prompt, type “ipconfig /all” then note your ip. Then type “ipconfig /release” unplug your modem for a few minutes, reconnect, then you will usually have a different ip. Also, your ip changes on its own about once a month…..now ask me how I know :/

  26. Brandon Says:

What is the deal with people so desperate to trade back into round 1 for anybody? Good teams wait their turn, trade back, and select best player available. Bad teams jump the gun, blow their resources in trades and trade up.

Long story short… Cam Erving is a near lock to be there at pick #34.

  27. MadMax Says:

Plus what about people logging in from different wifi spots….stay strong genius.

To convince a team that is smitten with a player that you are going to select them and force them to trade up.

  29. MadMax Says:

Ya, like we didnt trade up for our best tackler, Lavonte David…..but on Martin, you’re onto something.

  30. mikeh Says:

ya ok pinheads! cambell said that so its a done deal? far from it. they know how to get the word out for a good smoke screen.

  31. jb Says:

Jameis is gonna help make this team relevant again! My only fear is all this Glazers on board with Winston talk is some sort of smokescreen, and they end up taking Mariota, which would set us back another 10 or 15 years. It’s the same as when we traded for Jack Thompson back in 1983. The team went downhill and took 13 years to recover. Thompson was/is a great guy, but a lousy NFL quarterback. In Jameis you get the whole package. You fans that keep wanting to demonize the guy need to get over it! These polls showing how the majority of fans want Mariota over Winston, simply show how easily the American public is swayed by the media today.
    Wake the **** up people!!!!

  32. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Bitch slap folks !
every year there is a debate about which QB’s are best better than the other, we just have not been in the position to be involved in the pick. Point being every year these names that are “once in a generation” best since blah blah…franchise QB for the next 15 years etc.
rarely…..RARELY turn out to match the hype RARELY
    Mariota or TRADE down TWICE
    and rebuild in earnest !
QB in 2016 with Bucs 1st pick

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If this is credible we should soon see a barrage of writers confirming this as they will be putting immense pressure on their sources to confirm.
Since it is early in the process….this could be the proverbial trial baloon.

  34. flmike Says:

The one year we’re in the discussion for a franchise QB we have Lovie “We don’t need no offense” Smith as our head coach…and the he’s in panic mode, which only leads to bad decisions, poker players call it being on tilt. He’s gonna reach for an overgrown 14 year old with maturity issues, bad mechanics, bad footwork and a level of hubris throwing the ball into spots only ever seen in Sarah Palin’s belief that she is qualified to run the country. Instead of picking the guy who is light years ahead where it count (above the neck), but who may have to learn a little more, but will benefit the franchise years after Lovie has been put to pasture. This is a bad spot the Bucs are in, you have a coach who knows he’s gone if he screws the pooch, so he’ll make picks in his own best interest not the best of interests of the franchise. This is not a good spot for the Bucs…

  35. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m sorry, but Charlie Campbell has been wrong as much as he has been right. Since his days with PR, he has a habit of making things up, using his best guess, or to support his personal opinions.

His mock drafts were such that he named every possible player throughout many mocks, so that he could say he “predicted it.”

Likely, his sources do not exist, or he was chatting with another media guy who had theories that supported his, and that is his “source”.

Even outside of this draft, I would not believe a word Charlie Campbell says. Period. I don’t like liars.

  36. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

“gonna reach for an overgrown 14 year old with maturity issues, bad mechanics, bad footwork and a level of hubris throwing the ball into spots only ever seen in Sarah Palin’s belief that she is qualified to run the country”

  37. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

“The one year we’re in the discussion for a franchise QB we have Lovie “We don’t need no offense” Smith as our head coach…”

I would really like to know what you base your opinion of the man on. Because I have seen nothing to support your claims. His most condemning point is the record of last year. Other than that, please, explain yourself.

The “we don’t need no offense” thing is completely idiotic considering he drafted nothing but offense in his first draft here. Had he spent those picks on defense, we would have won more games I think. But know, he obviously felt he needed offense too, so please, make your point.

  39. Bucfan4life Says:

As much as I would like to believe this I have to think there is no way this is accurate. Don’t think anyone is set with their pick before the combine, pro days or team visits have happened. I also don’t think anyone within the organization is going to show there cards right now. If something was said it was most likely part of the poker game.

  40. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @flmike

I do agree with your opinion of Winston though.

  41. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @JoeJoes Fungi Nails

Exactly, next year they’ll be saying its the best QB class in a decade

    *(2016 Quarterback Draft Picks)
    • Cardale Jones, QB, Ohio State
    • Christian Hackenberg, QB, Penn State
    • Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State
    • Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State
    • Jared Goff, QB, California

Oooo–And don’t forget the free agent class

    *(2016 Quarterback Free Agents)
    • Andrew Luck QB 25 IND
    • Robert Griffin III QB 25 WAS
    • Cam Newton QB 25 CAR
    • Sam Bradford QB 27 STL
    • Ben Roethlisberger QB 32 PIT
    • Philip Rivers QB 33 SD
    • Eli Manning QB 34 NYG

    Smh, never ending story….

“JB” says,” These polls showing how the majority of fans want Mariota over Winston simply show how easily the American public is swayed by the media.”

Great comment. Haven’t seen so much hate for a person, since Sarah Palin ran for VP. Wonder if the media had anything to do with that one?

  43. Pat Says:

This is brilliant call by Team Glazer…they are politically correct. Now the onus is on L&L.

  44. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I find it very unlikely because of all the bad press the Bucs have gotten lately. I’m skeptical that the Glazers want more bad press, and that’s what Winston is.

I still say this…even the people who want him feel he needs a babysitter. There’s no denying it. Some people are just willing to risk the Glazers money and the Bucs reputation blindly.

  45. DallasBuc Says:

Let it be true. Winston = winning football games in Tampa again.

Um, excuse me, but the media is overwhelmingly for Winston, not Mariota. If anyone is buying into what the press says, its the Winston supporters.

  47. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

“Jameis is gonna help make this team relevant again! My only fear is all this Glazers on board with Winston talk is some sort of smokescreen…”

There are no smokescreens for the #1 pick. There’s no need. No one can trade up to take someone before you.

Even in the case of trades, there is no need. Everyone knows what you have and what you plan to do for the most part. If anything, its up to the other teams to make offers to change your mind.

That said, this story by Campbell is a lie.

  49. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @JoeJoes Fungi Nails

    Nailed it!

The same can be said of the fans here, who will blame Lovie for the pick.

  50. mikeh Says:

there will be a whole bunch more stories people! before its said and done count on it!

  51. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I have always felt that the national media never has the best interests of the Bucs in mind, not ever.

First, Culverhouse alienated them. Then, when Dungy was fired, many were again alienated.

I personally believe there are plenty out there that want the Bucs to stay at the bottom, that want them to make the wrong choices. That is, I believe, why they want the Bucs to take Winston.

Certainly, guys like Sims, Boomer and others cannot stand us. And its no coincidence that the Big Tuna, who spent time in media several times between coaching gigs, snubbed the Bucs twice.

If we’re going to win, it’s be without the input of the national media.

  52. Luther Says:

Bob, I can assure you that you are arguing with the wrong person. If I were a criminal, then yes my ip is registered. We are on a blog so Joe has no access to my Id other than what we provide. I hate it when people try to make it seem like other people don’t know how things work.

  53. MOBucs Says:

I’d take Winston over Mariota and Palin over Obama any day of the week.

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Luther

As someone who has run multiple blogs on the very same system, I can tell you that Joe has complete access to your IP Address, what browser you uses, where you are and more…he even can tell what website you visit before this one.

  55. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

And everyone has an IP Address, even if they don’t know it.

  56. Chef Paul Says:

LOL, Is it as simple as the conservatives want Winston and the liberals want Mariota?

Reading just this thread, makes it appear so.

  57. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Wouldn’t the logical smokescreen involve Mariota since he is the one rumored for Philly etc, to trade up for?

I agree that none of these reports in themselves mean much, but, the preponderance of the reports and mocks and so on continue to point to Winston.

And, if Charlie said Mariota, the hardcore Winston haters would be saying nothing about smokescreens. We all know that.

  58. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Winston
Wind up – It’s not an illusion. He isn’t quite as bad as Leftwich or Tebow, but he’s alarmingly close. Given his baseball background, I believe this is the contributing factor. I also have my doubts that it can be de-programed since he has it in both sports.

Posture – He places his weight improperly while passing the ball.

Pocket Presence & Release Speed – Winston holds onto the ball too long because he is very slow going through progressions. Watch him closely. He does not do it by instinct, and he rarely reacts quickly. His progressions are almost forced. Expect a lot of sacks and fumbles. He’s a statue in the pocket as well. Bad instincts for moving around.

Stares Down Targets – Winston consistently stared down his targets. Even as he goes through his progressions (which take far too long) he is constantly looking back at his intended target, making it clear who he is passing to. I can predict his target on nearly every play, so I know the defense can.

Accuracy – Winston has to be accurate, because he projects his throws so badly that WRs are almost always covered. But he isn’t nearly so accurate as people claim.

The Comebacks – While everyone talks about how he has so many comebacks, few look at the reasons for the need to comeback. He consistently plays poorly in the first half of games. In the NFL, if he throws 2-3 picks in the first half, there will be no coming back nearly as often, because the teams will run up the score. Especially when they realize is weakness.

Leadership – His dislike of losing is admirable, but as a result of having such a record, he really has not had the opportunity to prove his leadership ability…except in the Rose Bowl, when he blamed everything on his teammates and took no accountability for himself. He even got in the face of his coach. That is not good leadership. Sorry. I saw his team quit on him in the Rose Bowl, and its no wonder.

The Offense – Not as NFL style as people claim. There were often 4 WRs on the line. That’s not common in the NFL. It happens, but not a lot (which means it is out of the norm, not considered NFL Style). I suspect this is because of his weakness in the pocket and scrambling. He cannot buy time, so they have to give him as many options as possible.

Off Field Behavior – Like it or not, it is a factor. Even if he is innocent of the rape charges, he has done other things, and worse of all, he has shown the inability to learn from his mistakes. This simple fact that fans who want Tampa to draft him talk about how he could be “mentored” by Brooks or Lovie or whomever, in order to control his off field behavior, raises the biggest red flag. If he is the right pick, why does he need to be babysat? It’s not what you want in the face of your franchise. You might pull it off with WR or RB, or even CB, but not with Quarterback. He would alienate the fans inside of a year. Try as the people who want him picked might, there is no avoiding this. If he needs help in that area, he is a very bad investment. Think back to any successful Quarterback in history, and show me more than two that had such off field behavior issues and still found success. The odds are against it. and that is the main red flag.

Thought Processes – Winston seems to process things at a slow pace, which is alarming. The NFL game is faster, as we hear rookies point out every year. His slow progressions and slow adjustments make him a bad risk. Contrary to Mariota, Winston has a hard time with letting bad plays go, and will often blame others for his own mistakes. He loses self control often. To be honest, I wonder if he has the same illness that Brandon Marshal has. It would explain a lot. But it would also be a major red flag, as I would not want Marshal within a mile of our team). Winston would often go off on his teammates, and 5-10 minutes later come back to them and try to talk their anger at him down. That is VERY Marshal like. He will stomp around on the sidelines, yelling and screaming when things are going wrong.

    Mariota

Under Center – Obviously, we don’t know how he will handle this aspect of his game…but I DO know two things. First, EDS is the wrong center for him. EDS blew 2-3 games last year all by himself because of bad snaps. Second, most of the playoff teams avoided taking snaps from under center over 75% of the time. It’s overrated, but I think Mariota can do it 25% of the time, like the best teams.

Pocket Presence & Release – There is a myth that Mariota is not a pocket passer, likely attributed to him by an overall opinion of pocket quarterbacks. Does he scramble? Yes. But he always…ALWAYS…looks to throw first unless a running play is called. He manages the pocket very well, knowing where to move. Teams that expect him to be a scramble first QB are in for a surprise. His release is very quick. No windup. If you look at the best NFL offenses, they are fast paced. Winston, I believe, is not capable of this, Mariota is.

Progressions – Mariota detractors claim he does not go through his progressions. This is not what I witnessed (I have watched nearly 28 games of his). I saw him instinctively go through them very, very quickly. More than that, I saw him reading the defense before the ball went in motion, and making adjustments.

Accuracy – He plants his feet properly and he throws. there were a couple floaters that could have been picked off by a pro, but for the most part he was very accurate. What detractors pointed to as inaccurate was mostly ball placement to reduce risk of interceptions, and it worked. He laid the ball right where it needed to be, consistently. At the same time, there were 2-3 passes a game that he probably wished he could take back. I look at it like this…3 passes out of 30 passes is pretty darn good.

Scrambling & Throwing on the Run – Scrambling to the right and throwing on the run Mariota was deadly accurate…even across the field, even though that’s not a wise throw in the NFL. He did pull it off in college though. Scrambling to his left, I didn’t see very often in 18 games, but he did well at least 60% of the time on such plays, which seems consistent with NFL Quarterbacks when they move left.

When he is forced to scramble, he keeps his eyes moving about, looking for someone to pass it to, until he crosses the line of scrimmage and then he commits.

Thought Processes – Marcus Mariota processes things very quickly. More than that, he makes decisions very quickly. There are times when this might become an issue in the NFL, because he might miss something in the defense, but for the most part it is what you want from today’s NFL Quarterbacks. He is a very smart, fast learner. He doesn’t let bad plays get to him, and instead makes an effort to overcome obstacles as much with his mind as with his talent. He learns and adapts. He treats his teammates with respect, doesn’t pout. He doesn’t blame others for his bad plays. In fact, I have witnessed him taking players aside and encouraging them. He studies the playbook while on the sideline as well, looking for ways to overcome challenges, refreshing his mind.

    Go Mariota
None of this evaluation can be disproven, because it is spot on. Anyone that says otherwise is in denial.

First, how do you know that?

    Second, it goes both ways.

  63. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I agree it goes both ways. I have said multiple times that every single person’s opinion amounts the same. Which in reality is zero. Even the Joes. Everyone has an equal share of nothing. But, I don’t denigrate other people’s opinions about football. When they call him a rapist, sure, I say something. But, the people that respectfully don’t think Winston is the right pick. Sure, but, thus far, the people who are paid for their analysis? The preponderance is currently Winston.

By all means, please post who pays or has hired you for your professional draft analysis.

His whole philosophy is based upon great defense and special teams and turnovers, with offense playing only a contributing factor. I’m paraphrasing here but…”With great defense and special teams you can win 10 games” thats more than half a season’s worth of games, Lovie actually believes he can win in todays NFL with this philosophy.

  66. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Love and Warrick Dunn

Ahhhh, and there is the crutch. You said opinion, you did not designate “opinion of football matters”.

I do get paid for my writings of opinion on other matters. However, I have no desire to reveal my identity at this point for any reason. I’m not THAT much of a celebrity and my readers vary in views, so I’d rather not alienate any of them.

  67. Bucfan4life Says:

I’m paraphrasing here but…”With great defense and special teams you can win 10 games” that’s more than half a season’s worth of games, Lovie actually believes he can win in today’s NFL with this philosophy.”

Yes, but he did not say “only” great defense and special teams. What you have read is taken out of context. There is no getting around the fact that if he believed in only those two, he would not have drafted pure offense. It contradicts the claim in an of itself.

  70. mikeh Says:

@ buc bonzi- i agree 100 and 10% if they take this kid they will live to regret it.

  71. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Bucfan4life

I didn’t use the term “conspiracy”. I am simply saying that individuals within the national media dislike the Buccaneers organization and do not want them to win.

Sims himself has made this clear, and Boomer has repeatedly spoken against the organization. Is it so far fetched that someone in the media, who wants, say, Mariota to go to the Texans, would promote the possibility that the Bucs draft Winston? Knowing he is the worse QB?

  72. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    LOL!!!!

As far as I can tell, this is about FOOTBALL. I didn’t realize I needed to specify.

Are trying to tell me that you think you are the only person here paid for their opinion within their particular industry? I know there are lawyers on here. Guess what, they get paid for their opinions. Same thing goes for many varying facets of expertise.

    Come on, man……

  73. Eric Says:

    sounds about right.

The Glazer’s are smart enough to rely on the bucs investigation of Jameis, and not jump to conclusions from the media.

    As any professional organization would.

Just a few weeks until Jameis is a buccaneer. Gonna be a great day.

  74. mikeh Says:

winston will be no better than freemon was count on it! and freemon did not have the baggage this bozo does. if the glazers do this its all about the money they will show that they dont care about the future of this team.

  75. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Love and Warrick Dunn

You keep insinuating things I’m not saying. Your ability to read seems severely limited.

    On Winston, it’s simple:

Every youngster wants to be grownup, but the difference between a child and an adult is not years or status. Rather, it’s a willingness to accept responsibility, to be responsible for one’s own actions.

Winston is not the quarterback we need.

  76. MadMax Says:

  78. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Again, that is YOUR opinion. Some agree and others do not on here. And each person’s opinions matters only in their own mind (including me).

Just because you say it doesn’t make it true, or any more important than anyone else who posts their OPINION.

And, thanks for adding in a little bit of denigration. At least you are consistent in that aspect.

  79. Eric Says:

Naturally it couldn’t be the case that the Glazer’s are privy to a fuller range of info about Jameis then what the various commenters on here possess.

    Nah that’s crazy talk.

  80. Luther Says:

@MadMax agreed…I’m sitting here laughing at all the expert opinions. People have no clue as to how much they can actually do.

  81. knuckledragger Says:

Everyone posting here is gay including me. There. I said it so it must be true.

    No point.

  84. Howar Cosell Says:

    Jame-arcus Russell

  85. Howard Cosell Says:

    ^Who is this Howar guy?

  86. mikeh Says:

lmfao- well one thing for sure! we all care about the bucs. I think we can all agree on that!

  87. Bucs#1 Says:

I will beleive it when I see it.
This is the same guy who said last year that his “sources” told him the Bucs would be taking Johnny Manziel at #7
We’ll be seeing all kinds of stories in the next 2 months flip flopping between the 2 QB’s

  88. MadMax Says:

Too late Luv, you’re fined…..penalty is your next O line pick if we DO go QB with our first overall. AJ Cann, and maybe Cam Irving will be there in the mid to lower rung of round one. We may have to trade up or we can just sit.

Who do you think should be the next pick?

  89. Couch Fan Says:

Please stop posting your worthless scouting report that shows how much you hate winston Bonzai. It’s no coincidence you have nothing but negatives for him and nothing but positives and excuses for Mariota. It’s laughable. It doesn’t even sound like you watched tape on Winston to come up with the idiotic report

And then to top it off you say its spot on and were in denial though just damn near every professional scout says they exact opposite. Lol, No you arent a hater at all.

  90. MarshallU Says:

I find it very hard to beleive that people like the Glazers would want a walking red flag like Jamarcus Winston to be the face of their franchise.
Draft and develope Marcus Mariota or start Glennon this year and if he doesn’t get it done then draft your QB next year when the QB class will be much stronger.
Drafting Mariota is the smartest, less risky move

  91. Luther Says:

    @Couch Fan..such a bullspit scouting report

  92. Luther Says:

Swallow hard guys. Winston is the pick so you can get a jump on finding your next bandwagon.

  93. Bucs#1 Says:

Bonzai, thanks for the detailed evaluations of Winston and Mariota. They are 100% spot on as anybody with any basic football knowledge can see.
Both QB’s have their positives and negatives. I think the biggest difference is that Mariota has so much potential that he hasn’t even realized yet and Winston pretty much has already topped out.
Character and personality wise, Mariota is somebody that can be the face of your franchise and Winston is somebody that can be the tail

  94. Couch Fan Says:

    @Luther

My favorite part is where he says

“but as a result of having such a record, he really has not had the opportunity to prove his leadership ability”

LMAO so losing is the only way you can show leadership? I just can’t stop laughing. So stupid. I guess we should only draft players that did nothing but lose in college. Real leaders there. Lol

  95. Iknowmorethanlovie Says:

Glazers are smarter than the Mariota lovers like Big Dog.

  96. Ryan Leaf Says:

I have been hired by JaMarcus, err, I mean Jameis Winston’s people to tutor him through the interview process and to show him how to be a true professional in the NFL

  97. Couch Fan Says:

And not to mention he flat out lies saying Jameis blamed his teammates… wheres the proof? I never heard anything even remotely close to that… And then you say his team quit on him? It they quit on someone it was the coach not himn. But haters will only see what they want to see even if it makes no sense at all. Lol, to F*ckin funny.

  98. MarshallU Says:

Amazing how certain Winston groupies can post under 4 or 5 different screen names at exactly the same time to make it look like there are more of them, have a conversation with themselves and all show exactly the same large ammount of ignorance

  99. Ryan Leaf's Agent Says:

    Ryan,
Tell them about our dream team:
It will be Jamarcus Russell, Josh Freeman, TimTebow
and Ryan Leaf all putting ona quarterback NFL preparation
camp. It should be huge sell.

    Thanks

  100. StPeteBucsFan Says:

and they want him to lead a resurgence in Tampa Bay like he did at Florida State.

Listen you Winstonites can calm my fears about this selection. But for Gawd’s sake can we stop with the Freaking hyperbole? And that includes YOU too JOE!

So now St. Jameis is the one responsible for FSU’s turnaround. Then why are they wasting all that money on Jimbo? What happened to all those incredible classes Jimbo drafted? Why did the record immediately start to turn when Jimbo took over not when St. Jameis began to play QB?

And so the FOUR FSU players projected to go in the first round of the NFL draft had nothing to do with that resurgence? How about the three projected to go in the 2nd round? SEVEN players projected to go in the first two rounds!!! But FSU’s success is totally because of ST. Jameis. That defense that kept them in games when FAmous was tossing all those INT’s to start games.

You Winstonites can perhaps sell us on the reasons to pick Fameis #1 but please stop with all the freaking hyperbole.

I’m looking forward to St. Jameis first public appearance in ST. Pete. He won’t have to take the Frankland or Gandy to get her why according to Joe and many posters here he’ll simply be able to walk across the water of Tampa Bay!

  101. DallasBuc Says:

Apparently winning football games in Tampa is less important to some of you than having a clean-cut Boy Scout behind center. Winston is a young kid in the biggest spot light that has made some mistakes including perhaps 1 big one that is unproven and a bunch of small immature ones that are way overblown.
This team has been just terrible when the QB play has sucked. When the QB play has been decent (see Freeman at times in 2010 and 2012) there was hope and winning football. Winston has the talent to sling the football better than any prospect we have ever had a chance at acquiring since Gruden passed on Asron Rodgers. What has this team done since? Get a QB, get some hope and win some football games. Don’t pass on the top talent for the guy that you want to marry your daughter. This is football.

  102. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

    The Glazers approve?

    How could this be?

We’ve been told by numerous yahoo’s on these pages that the Glazers have “too much class” to make him “the face of the franchise”.

That I was clueless for thinking that they would sign off on Winston.

Stay tuned yahoos. Stay tuned and come to grips….soon.

  103. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

You yahoos know who you are too….mikeh, Mr. Patrick, gatrbuc and so much more.

  104. DallasBuc Says:

Since Winston = winning does the decision to pass on Winston by so many Bucs fans equate to a form of self-hate?

  105. Jeagan1999 Says:

This report doesn’t mean crap. None of them do until the card goes to the commissioner. I still think Winston is too much of a red flag, and that Mariota has the higher upside. We shall see in just over 2 months who the Bucs and the Glazers really prefer!

Of course if the article went something like this: Per Campbell, Team Glazer has given its blessing to select Marcus Mariota. Then the reaction would be much different in here. Since it’s about Winston, it JUST CAN’T BE.

Well it can be and it will be.

  108. Bucs#1 Says:

  109. lurker Says:

“Rather, it’s a willingness to accept responsibility, to be responsible for one’s own actions.”

obviously not true, but whatever. look at most of the adult posters defaming winston and assassinating his character. there is no responsibility. hell, your “observations” are so biased it is laughable. but you will show the experts how they are wrong.

  110. lurker Says:

  114. feelthepewterpower Says:

I certainly would take Winston over Mariota with the first pick. However, my biggest concern with Winston isn’t even his off the field “issues”. I think some of it’s overblown (not discounting the rape allegations). He has said in the past that he’d like to play baseball as well, so I’d want him to be totally committed to football. I believe that issue should be addressed….

Most analysts don’t get the first pick wrong. Currently most analysts are saying Winston to the Bucs. That’s all we need to know right now.

If we do draft him, I may just not be a bucs fan at all.I just can’t stand to look at another ” what happened,I didn’t do anything wrong, what’s wrong with you guys”, deer in the headlights stares toward the sideline. 124. White Tiger Says:

These are the same guys that fired Tony Dungy for not being able to get past round 2 of several playoff runs…then “unhired” Marvin Lewis (after telling Rich McKay that they wanted a more offensive minded coach – which ultimately cost McKay his job)…were spurrned (for a second time) by The Tuna…sending them on a late, whirlwind, Keystone Cops-like, coast-to-coast coaching search where they offered the job to 1) Ralph Freidgen, and 2) Steve Marriucci, before “settling” on trading away our future for coach #3) Jon Gruden. Which brought them instant success, but the terms of the trade forced them to commit draft hari kari ..probably costing any future success by the poor negotiating to get Gruden: sacrificing so many 1st & 2nd round draft picks that it ultimately carried over to a lack of talent/depth. Coupled with the first couple of years of talent strangulation due to the former GM putting them in Cap-Hell…

…then after six years they fired THAT coach for eventually being unable to get past the 1st round of the playoffs – they hired (in succession): a position coach, and THE ONLY college coach actually WORSE than Ralph Freidgen…

I’m hoping Frick & Frack have learned from their various football related failures – and don’t get me wrong, as owners go, I love the Glazers – I’m just hoping they’re using more “research” than the JoeBucFan fan polls.

…don’t laugh, there’s still apart of me that thinks that the Glazers pay WAAAAYYY to much attention to what EYE-RAH & @joe’s weekly fan polls say…(Joel even hinted at it at the press conference announcing they were firing Gruden)…

Fingers crossed they draft the right Hawaiian…er, Quarterback…

  125. Senor Mofo Says:

The idea that the Glazers, owners of a billion-dollar sports franchise, are going to give Lovie and Licht, two guys they hired 413 days ago, absolute carte blanche to draft Jameis Winston when the draft is still 72 days away is absurd.

This decision will require a top-level organizational consensus, and will not be finalized until April 29.
