Worst Quarterback Situations

February 14th, 2015
"The Sporting News" isn't that enamored with Bucs QB Mike Glennon.

Sporting News isn’t enamored with Mike Glennon.

Hey, did you watch your Bucs play last year, two years ago, hell, three-quarters of the seasons since Brad Johnson won the Super Bowl? Gruesome, right?

Joe thinks Bucs fans have become so accustomed to godawful quarterback play, they don’t know any better.

David Steele of the Sporting News took at look at the teams with the worst quarterback situations in the NFL and guess what? Those Pewter Pirates made an appearance at No. 2.

Can it be fixed? Yes, by using the first pick in the draft on either Mariota or Jameis Winston … if they don’t find a player at another position they want more. Going with one of those two seems like a no-brainer, but April 29 is far away.

Lovie Smith whiffed on his first franchise-QB choice, Josh McCown. Glennon’s future as an NFL starter is unclear. Whoever ends up with the job will have another new offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter, and an offensive line in shambles.

So many Bucs fans run away to hide and stick their heads in the sands of Treasure Island, plug their ears with their fingers and hum, “LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH-LAH,” claiming reaching for a left tackle in the draft will make all the problems at quarterback go away.

The Bucs’ quarterback problems are like a cyst. Unless you take care of it, it only grows worse.

Get your quarterback (April 30), and then you can build the offensive line for the next three years. At least the quarterback spot will be resolved.

Dude took such a beating the first three years on the Texans he was never the same.

Draft the QB and protect him. Play calling can help. You have to do both.

  2. Dick2111 Says:

Concur Joe … we must pick a QB with our #1 pick. Then with our #34 pick we can go OL, and MLB with our third round choice hopefully. Lots of holes to fill obviously, but those three should be our highest priorities. The Bucs also need to pick up a very good tackle or guard in FA … as an absolute minimum.

  3. Brandon Says:

Redskins and Browns have a had great left tackles for years now (Trent Williams in DC but before that 10+ seasons of Chris Samuels and then Joe Thomas in Cleveland)…. their offenses have consistently been among the best, along with their teams, in that time… it’s all about the LT… obviously… it fixes EVERYTHING!

Again that presumes that one of the two QB’s available is the answer. But the nothing ventured nothing gained have convinced me.

I’m now solidly in the Mariota camp. All the talk about taking snaps from under center is just that….talk. Throwing into tight windows can also equal forcing the ball. Forcing the ball in college against some suspect secondaries talent wise got Fameis into double digit interceptions both of his seasons. Last year he led the ACC and was 2nd in the nation.

I’ve now seen enough tape of Mariota to believe he can learn to take snaps from center, he’s already been reading defenses, and I’ve seen him hit some tight windows. He is a better physical specimen, much faster and mobile in the pocket and his lanky frame will fill out nicely as he ages.

I give Fameis props for dropping the weight before pro days and interviews. He’s been working hard good for him. But you can see from his body type that weight will be a life long challenge. Can you say Byron Leftwich or Sean King?

Ok the King comment was cheap shot! LMAO. Fameis would have to live at Dunkin Donuts to catch the Pillbury dough boy.

I just think these guys are not that far apart. Mariota has more upside and unlike all the others who love FSU”s offense as prep for the NFL I think Mariota has actually had more time in what the NFL will look like going forward.

No not the run option fakes but certainly spread high powered offenses with many snaps taking place in the ‘gun. Did anybody keep track of how often Aaron Rodgers took snaps in the gun when the Pack played us this year.

This year’s SB was a watershed moment in the NFL. We saw the last of a dying breed in Brady and the future in Wilson. Mariota represents the future Fameis is the past.

BTW if we do draft Fameis the QB I hope he most emulates will be Favre. That’s who he reminds me of..a tough gritty guy who doesn’t hesitate to force the ball and is either feast or famine. Perhaps Fameis can feast enough to make us forget the famine ala Favre.

David Carr’s biggest problem is holding onto the ball too long. Even when he had protection, he took sacks. He had to see his receivers open before he’d throw it…. your argument is invalid.

Aaron Rodgers got the piss beat out of him his first season as a starter… line was bad, he also held onto the ball too long. NFL history is littered full of great QBs that had crap LTs to start their careers.

    ————————

His number of interceptions (17), are the exact same number Glennon threw as a 5th year senior at NC St…and that was without all of college football giving them their best every week (and with two weeks to prepare).

Mariota taking snaps under center IS a big deal. My mother could take a snap from center… but that’s not all it is a really about. It’s about receiving the snap, having your steps from center measured precisely by both number and distance, knowing eye placement at each step, hitting the final step and then progressing through reads while continuously stepping as each progression is made…. that is a lot of work… especially for my mom… or somebody else that has never done that before… like Mariota….who’s also never read a defense prepared for a pro style set.

  7. louden Says:

Pick QB and yeah, playcalling will help.
+ get Torrey Smith WR: unlike Marshall (who Joe advocates) Smith is 4 years younger + also very good, with Mike Evans our 1-2 WR punch would be complete for the foreseeable future.. (can draft a slot WR anytime the next 4 years.. even Bucs should be able to do that..)

+ system helps: But not the usual “back in the day” thing the Pro-style, whatever that is..

NFL isn´t a ever evolving league… Spread systems can´t work.. Pistol? heck no, ask gruden, he recently won a superbowl.

YOu want INSTANT success? You have to draft Winston, no chance with Mariota:
You saw what Kapernick, Russel wilson, RGIII, Cam Newton (especially with Rob Chudzinki) did…
No one ever had some kind of success and they are soooo long in the league…

The typicall drop back thrower are the way to go, and straight up, formations with Maryland style 2 FB´s on field…

No mikey mouse Spread-option-spead-in-space shhhh – leave that to chip Kelly and the non-producing Eagles offense….

  8. Jim Says:

No QB will last 3 years of pounding without an line to protect him.

  9. OB Says:

The Bucs fans knew that we needed help ever since the Super Bowl win and then we never won a playoff game again. Why, coaching, picking players, and no good QB.

Since everyone on this site is paid millions to select the best players and they are, we also so have to realize that the Bucs organization is doing the picking and which QB they pick is who we are going to live with for awhile.

As for the OL, without a good OL and you pick a potential
franchise QB, it is kind of buying a Tesla and parking it on the street in a bad part of town. Doesn’t last.

So Happy Valentine’s Day to all the ladies of and for the Bucs, including any of the Joes who are really Joettes.

  10. Barry Says:

If Glennon were given a honest and fair shot as the starter and took the Bucs to the playoffs, his haters would still be banging the drum to bench him or release him. I said it before and i’ll say it again. If Glennon were a black QB winning Rookie of the Year, Set Team records, and set NFL records he would have been given every opportunity as a starter and given time to develop. Is this not true?

  11. Jim Says:

The Bucs allowed 50 sacks and 124 hits last year. In 3 years that would be 150 sacks and 372 hits. What QB will live through that?

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Brandon

“Mariota taking snaps under center IS a big deal. My mother could take a snap from center…”

Brandon with all due respect to your mom, I feel uncomfortable talking about anybody’s mother in other than respectful terms, was she a multi-sport star.

    From Mariota’s bio…

Also a standout track and field athlete, Mariota was a state track qualifier in the sprinting and jumping events.[10] At the 2010 National Underclassman Combine, he won the camp’s “Fastest Man” and “Combine King” awards after running a 4.48-second 40-yard dash. At the 2011 HHSAA T&F Championships, he earned fourth-place finishes in both the 200-meter dash (23.41 s) and the long jump (20 ft, 7 in),

Now I’m going to assume your momma is very smart….she raised you right. 🙂

    But so is Mariota..

Ducks offensive coordinator Scott Frost told ESPN.com’s Adam Rittenberg that his star QB is “freakishly smart” and stated that his interceptions mainly come when he is pressured, “He’s freakishly smart, especially when it comes to football. He sees things and processes things so quickly that he just doesn’t make a ton of mistakes.”

He has he brains, he has the athleticism. It won’t take him long to master taking snaps from center. I suspect he’s already been working everyday with his QB Guru.

And finally. Marcus is the future…Fameis is the past.

    From the Bleacherreport…

As the NFL looked to the college game for advanced passing inspiration, pro teams spread the field with more wide receivers, passed far more and let their quarterbacks line up in the shotgun to avoid the pass rush.

Single-back offenses fell out of favor, and running backs became far more specialized. With most teams using two, three or four running backs like Swiss army knives, there’s less overall running than there was a decade ago, but it’s more effective.

In every way, NFL offense has changed dramatically over the past 10 years—and for the better.

Will be nice to have some optimism at the QB spot this season. Regardless of which one is picked. I think we’ll shore up the holes in the O-line pretty well in FA this year and go QB/MLB with the first 2 picks. Draft for depth/potential with the remaining rounds, focusing on pass rushers and defensive backs.

Lovie went all offense last year and it didn’t pan out too well, I get the feeling he will want to put more of a defensive footprint on the draft this year.

If the Bucs go QB at #1 (which I’m still not entirely convinced will happen…i.e. trade down for more picks) I agree with StPeteBucsFan and others that Mariota is the guy. I don’t know how anyone can watch that Oregon/FSU game and think that Winston is the guy. I don’t care about snaps under center or “pro-style offenses”, or any of that crap. Mariota is very smart, extremely gifted athleticly, doesn’t seem to make many mistakes, and doesn’t come with any huge question marks about his off the field behavior! Exactly what a team like Tampa needs….a guy who can scramble, throw on the run, and not turn the ball over! That combined with an improved offensive line and some more pressure on opposing QBs will make us at least competitive again!

I enjoyed your posts. I too am starting to think that Mariota would be a great fit for the Bucs. I like his speed and quick reaction time. I believe that Mariota will be our pick. I am not a Winston basher though and if the Bucs brass decides that Winston is the guy, then I will support that decission and hope they are right. Either guy, I believe will be a better QB than what we have had lately. With a weak OL, maybe Mariota’s speed and ability to escape the pocket while still finding an open target would extend some plays that may equate to a sack with Glennon or Winston.

The Bucs can sign a solid free agent O-lineman and grab a solid O-line prospect with their ridiculously early 2nd round pick – where guys with first round grades will certainly still be available. You infuse 2 talented o-lineman into what the Bucs currently have – with a new position coach, no less – and watch how the compeyition for jobs improves the leftovers as well.

You also are aware the Bucs have signed or traded for 5 offensive line starters in the last 3 years in FA and all have been failures, 3 of them spectacular failures yeah? Nope Lurker you just made my point. If Carroll calls the right play and fakes the ball to Lynch who everybody in the stadium thought would get the ball, one of the most mobile Qb’s in football rolls right and odds are strong he outruns the contain easily! No window necessary. Or if the contain does it’s job Wilson lobs it to a TE at the back of the end zone wide open. The Pats could not have defended all three of those options.

And IF by some miracle they did Wilson just throws the ball away and with a time out they can run beast mode two plays in a row.

Seattle made a Famies kind of play…FORCE..the football instead of using athleticism to be your opponents.

@Joe, I think St Pete Buc Fan thinks he is a writer. Hey St Pete, stop writing comments like they are articles. Not one person here, with any amount of a brain will read your comment thinking you have some contact, or even know you *ss from your elbow. Read @joes articles, than shhhh, stop trying to be st pete joe.

Learn what, that picking a choir boy , ‘for his character’, doesn’t always work out?

Welcome to the uncertainty of the draft. As I recall, there were a pot full of people hight on him, after the 10 win season. then 2 1/2 VERY bad seasons and he’s gone. How much of that was all him, and how much a revolving door at OC and head case Schiano at the helm. He needed a new start, as did the Bucs, but I don’t put it ALL on him.
