The popular belief of how Team Glazer and the Bucs handle the draft is that Team Glazer simply delegates authority to employees and trusts them to run the draft. And if everything goes as the football operations plans, then Team Glazer toasts the weekend’s efforts with a glass of champagne and begins worrying about training camp.
That’s not entirely true, says former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik. A current BSPN talking head, Dominik spent time in studio today with Tom Krasniqi and smooth-talking Ronnie Lane and gave WDAE-AM 620 listeners a rare peek behind the curtain at how the Bucs handle the draft.
In short, Team Glazer is not watching the draft tuned to Mike Mayock and the NFL Network on their 75-inch Samsung with their office floor littered with pizza boxes and empty beer cans.
“Well, they are involved,” Dominik said. “You have to explain it to them. What ownership wants is, just, ‘Tell me why. Why do you feel comfortable with [the pick]?’
“They are very good. They are businessmen. They made a lot of money in the business industry. They have made a lot of money in their lives. They are very talented in what they do and what they want to know is, they just want you to be able to answer the questions. ‘Why do you feel comfortable with Mariota?’ or ‘Why not Winston? Give me examples.’
“You always feel like you are on an interview when you talk to the owners. They are always kind of pushing you and probing you, saying ‘OK but,’ or ‘Lets take a step back, but … ‘
“They are very involved in terms of understanding the process, I will say that.”
This is sort of what Joe has heard about how Team Glazer works the draft. Joe was once told by a member of the coaching staff, “Oh, they will have their say. We just have to present the information to them.” That is almost exactly what Dominik described.
So, please dismiss the concept that Team Glazer is absent in the days leading up to the draft. They are anything but silent. And with a potential choice that could change the franchise for the better for the next decade or longer, Joe would be shocked to learn successful businessmen running an operation worth as much as $1 billion wouldn’t have any influence.
After all, it is their team. And it is Team Glazer, not Lovie Smith, who will suffer the setbacks or successes of the pick on the night of April 30.

Anyone who thinks they’ll simply accept the choice from their Coach/GM…..doesn’t understand big business…..
Even if they provided extreme autonomy in the past….that will likely change with the #1 overall pick.

Glazers fired an employee for DUI, they got rid of Mattress Mike, why would they want the little cousin of Mattress Mike? Shameis Loseton is not even on their board!
He blew it with the melt down in the Rose Bowl! Lovie saw it and said that could be me getting yelled at while we are losing! I will pass and take the highest rated player the community can be proud of!
Our two best players McCoy and David are “Choir Boys”, nothing wrong with players being good on and off the field and raised right!

Tthe job of believing news more difficult during this time of year. The reality is, the threat of a smoke screen — feigned interest — isn’t the only problem. Faking a smoke screen is just as frustrating. No one knows what anyone is really thinking.

I’d like to know the reasons Dominik gave them that convinced them to give the nod to Mark Barron.
If the Glazers were okay with Mark Barron, who knows what the heck can happen come April.

It’s still early in the process, and we’re seeing conflicting reports every other day now. Yesterday, the Buccaneers had “a lot more love” for Marcus Mariota than most teams and Ira Kaufman thought they’d draft Winston. It’s a little silly, but the Bucs are doing a good job of obfuscating their intentions. So we get to discuss all of this every day.

UCLA head coach Jim Mora, who has spoken very highly of Mariota in the past, took exception to Mayock’s comments. He came to Mariota’s defense on Tuesday during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, saying that he believes Mariota is a special player.
“I don’t agree with that,” Mora said. “And I would venture to say I’ve seen more of Marcus Mariota than Mike Mayock. And I respect Mike. If there is one voice out there that I’d listen to, it would be Mike because he does the work, he doesn’t poach off of other people’s information. He looks at the film, he’s active in calling coaches. But I don’t think that he’s a project. I think the guy is special, that’s just based upon playing him and evaluating and studying him for two years now.”
Mora went on to say that if he were in charge of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have the No. 1 pick in the draft, Mariota would be the easy pick.
“In my opinion he’s the best quarterback and the best player,” Mora said. “That’s my opinion based upon what I’ve seen, which is a lot of film of him. Anytime you start to go in depth in evaluating these players, you’re going to find holes. There is nobody that doesn’t have a weakness, a deficiency. But Marcus Mariota has such great character, he’s big, he’s fast, he’s strong, he can throw it. To me, he’s a sure thing.”

That’s the short view.
With the rookie cap in place you are not talking huge money for a handful of spots. The big money is made in the second contract. Think Russell Wilson vs RG3.
You have little hope even making the second contract playing for a bottom feeder.

The Glazers hired Shiano to clean out the locker room of players with bad behavior and character issues. Then they hired good guy Lovie, who won’t even allow cussing in practice, to continue that trend.
If the Glazers really are going to be heavily involved and insist on taking a QB, then the choice will be Mariota

Joe was right last night talking to the Big Poodle on WDAE!! Lovie Smith should be fired for that 2-14 stinker he laid on Tampa Bay last season and if John Fox can be fired….Lovie Smith should have been holding the door open for him on the way out! I am dumb founded that Team Glazer is going to waste another year on Lovie!
I don’t care which QB is picked…if Joe gets his way and the Rapist Winston brings his criminal QB act to town or if Marcus Mariota is the pick and the Buc’s have to work with him for a while. Brian Hundley (UCLA) or Bryce Petty. The problem is not the pick, but the fact that the HC has no coaching ability.
Whatever players are taken in the draft and free agency will be forced to play under a new coach in 2016 when Team Glazer finally gets around to firing Lovie. The new coach will want to work with his players who fit his system, so this entire process is wasting the first #1 pick the Bucs have had in decades.

It makes perfect sense for the owners to be ‘in the loop’, But at NO time did Dominick say (or even suggest) that the Glazers gave THEIR opinion of which player to choose (or not choose). If the HC/GM are spending the Glazers money, the owners want to be convinced that everyone has the Glazers/Buccaneers best interest in mind, and have done their due diligence.
The Glazers taking an ‘active’ role in player acquisitions is not something that CAN’T happen, it is just HIGHLY unlikely, given their past. The only caveat that I will give, is that they ‘might’ tell the staff that there is a player (Incognito?), that they will not allow to be brought in. But even that is speculative, since the Buccaneers have previously brought in ‘shady’ players.

Yes, we now have a respectable team…that is very crappy. I hear fans say every day (not): “Yeah we lost again, but our players are not in trouble with the law, or with the NFL conduct policies, so I’m totally satisfied and will buy season tickets”. “I didn’t notice QB throw the interception, I was too busy watching the DLine kissing babies and rescuing kittens from a tree. That is more interesting to me and why I watch football”. “Sure they threw and 80 yard bomb for a touchdown in the last minute to beat the Bucs, but the receiver has a DUI, so it shouldn’t count and the Bucs won in my eyes”. Great, the Bucs win the moral(s) victory Super Bowl! It doesn’t come with a Lombardi trophy……..

Here is what L&L face. If they pick any player besides Jameis and he fails there will certainly be some blowback. Especially if Jameis succeeds elsewhere.
But if L&L take Jameis and he self detonates or embarrasses the Bucs HALF as much as he embarrassed the NOLES the I told you so’s will reach EPIC proportions.
Poor 87 will have to leave town and enter the witless protection program.

Last year before the draft, I said I would not renew my tickets if they did two things…hire Frazier and not draft Carr.
They failed on both. So no more tickets for me until I’m convinced its worth it. I’m tired of the instability.
