Derrick Brooks is putting on the pressure
Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
The biggest argument the naysayers of Winston have going for them is Winston’s indiscretions off the field. While Joe understands that, they are not enough to ignore Winston’s immense talent.
Many Bucs fans want their team — naively — to have a roster filled with Boy Scouts. You know, men of undisputed high character like Derrick Brooks. The Hall of Fame linebacker is beloved by Bucs fans as a class act, a high character guy, which he most certainly is.
As a result, Joe wonders how the Winston critics among Bucs fans are going to square it with themselves that Brooks has now come out swinging, fighting not just in defense of Winston, but also lobbying hard for Tampa Bay to draft Winston No. 1 come the end of April.
In an interview this week from Phoenix on Bleacher Report Radio, heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio, Brooks make it perfectly clear the Bucs need Winston.
Winston “is what they need right now,” Brooks said of Winston. “It would be hard-pressed for me to not think the Bucs are not going to draft him with the No. 1 overall pick.
“What this young man has done thus far, he deserves to be the No. 1 pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. … The last 2 1/2 years I’ve gotten a chance to know him. You would be impressed. … His work ethic. How he bleeds the cause. Undeniable. He gives it up for his team. He works his butt off behind the scenes. He is a team-first guy, not a me-guy.”

Depends on how hot the water gets relative to the sexual assault accusation. Think the Glazer’s might not want the on going drama or negativity from the documentary and assumed civil case move forward. They don’t want to divide their fan base.

Winston is the best QB to come out since Luck and 1 of the 5 best QB prospects in the last 10 years.
Those saying there are no QBs worthy of the 1st pick are full of shiet.
Watch the tape on Winston and then watch it again. If you don’t see an NFL QB – then you have no idea what the hell to look for.
Brooks says we need to draft Winston. Brooks knows Jameis Winston way better than any other poster on this site. If you don’t trust Derrick Brooks recommendation and positive judgement of character regarding someone he knows pretty well – over your own negative opinions of Winston which are based mainly upon impressions, hearsay and sensationalism – then there’s not much left that’s rational to say to you….

Standing by the tunnel’s before home and away games Jameis Winston would low five each player on his team while they ran out onto the field. Sometimes being the last player to come out on the field. He’s definitely NOT a me first guy.
“He’s got this infectious personality,” Dilfer said. “A lot of people use the term leadership, but I like guys who are comfortable in their own skin. That’s Jameis. He came in a little unprepared, and he admitted it. But he’s got a real presence to him. I’ve been real proud of him.”
Brook’s has nothing on me as far as lobbying for Winston. 🙂

“Hand placement, foot placement, hip placement, eye
placement, shoulder placement,” Fisher said. “He works on all those fundamentals every week. We put in a lot of work.
“He’s done a really nice job with his hands … where his hands are held on the release point to be more consistent. But he can adjust his hands, which all the great ones can. He’s working his feet a lot … but he’s working his hips and getting more in line with his throws and being more aware of those things and not relying on his arm as much.”
Mark Stoops was irritated at times with Winston last year. The Kentucky coach was the Florida State defensive coordinator while Winston led the scout team in practice. Stoops expected Winston to be successful, just not so quickly.
“He just had that uncanny ability to drop the ball in on you all over the place. It was so aggravating,” Stoops said. “Just making plays and dropping the ball in there in some tough spots. He just had the ability to make plays.”
Winston manages to get himself in good throwing position more often than not.
“He doesn’t have to over-accentuate throwing the ball,” said Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who mentored Peyton and Eli Manning. “What I mean by that is his body is pretty quiet, allows him to be really be accurate. Looks to me, like for as young as he is, he’s very accurate.”
Dabo Swinney found out the hard way. Fifty-one points was the most points Clemson has ever allowed at home.
“Oh, he’s as good as anybody we’ve seen, that’s for sure,” Swinney said. “I mean, he’s very deserving to be one of the Heisman guys. Heck, and he may win it.
“But the thing that I’m most impressed with him is he just doesn’t make any mistakes, and he doesn’t flinch. He’s a very, very mature, poised guy personally. And then you throw in his great skill as a football player, just incredibly impressive.”

This choice scares me. Do the Bucs need a QB that MAY be great (or bust) or one that could be decent for the next 10 years? I prefer to go with the safest pick and build a top defense. Brad Johnson took the Bucs to the SB.

Winston knows it has to stop.
“I’m hurting this team, I really am,” Winston said.
At least two of the recent six interceptions were the result of a receiver running a route wrong, but Winston also is taking more risks with his throws.
“It’s not the offense starting slow now,” Winston said. “It’s just me starting slow, throwing interceptions, and that has to change.
“I’ve got to stop turning the ball over, and we’ve got to start making some noise in the first half. … My job as the leader of the team and as the quarterback of this team, I have to put both sides of the ball in good position to win the game.”

I think it’s clear I’ve been terribly worried about selecting Jameis but has said I would be on board if the Bucs Braintrust (is that an oxymoron? sorry Pablo don’t know the Spanish word for oxymoron) has done it’s due diligence and decides to pull the trigger.
But this is huge for me. Derrick Brooks is the face of the Bucs for me!!! I came to the Bucs later than some of you..early 90’s…and so I totally missed out on the Leroy Selmon era. He is a man who has a great reputation and was loved and respected by all.
Right after Selmon though you have to put Brooks up there on the Bucs Mount Rushmore. I think very highly of his class and integrity. Even given the fact that his garnet and gold blood may influence the decision I still respect Brooks too much to ignore this endorsement.
If Brooks is on board I’m a lot more comfortable with the pick. This should be the best news for Jameis lovers since the National Championship!!!

I suspect with Winston….his behavior could be contained at best….but the real Winston will always be inside of him trying to get out.

No disrespect intended for Mr. Brooks endorsement. But for me Winston has only played 2 seasons of college football, correct me if I am wrong but the ACC is not yet a part of the NFL? Are the teams in the conference that FSU played against all NFL talented? I would have rather Mr Winston went back to school to compete and get his degree in whatever it is that he has been studying towards.
The NFL is a meatgrinder and without an education how can players succeed after the fame and glory are gone. How many QB’s that entered the NFL draft two years into their college career have found success in the cutthroat business of the NFL. Who is to say that Mr Winston will have a great successful junior season when he is drafted this season. What will happen to this young man if he $hits the bed in the NFL, will he still get all the love and admiration? This is a risky venture to draft a player who is only two years removed from highschool. Sure we can all say he is and has done somethings that are youthful miss judgments. When will he grow past this, when he is a millionaire NFL QB? maybe

The majority of people who know football and have years of experience endorse Winston. And respect that they know more than you dream to know about football.

No problem…..sometimes its the short posts that are the hardest to read….I am particularly bothered by the racial overtones and accusations….which I don’t have any place in the dispute. I also think the rape allegations, although disturbing, won’t ever have a resolution.
There is a lot of repetition which you could expect with the same subject on a daily basis….the problem is that the debate won’t resolve itself for quite some time…..even after the pick is made…there will be debate about what could have been for, I suspect….years.

Josh Freeman didn’t have a bad thing said about him before he was drafted as far as character is concerned, yet his attitude on the last year here, according to Joe if I read him right, was a factor in the poor performance of the team.
I don’t get paid millions by the Bucs to choose QBs, so those that do can choose who they want, I would want Mariota for his smarts under fire and character being about the same age as Winston, but they must get it right and let Glennon be the QB until or if the new one can beat him out of the job. I would cut McCown, all I need is the millions and the job.

That is my sentiment as well. But I don’t think he had that option. I suspect he was quietly told it would be better for all if he moved on. The fact that we can say he’s innocent until proven guilty while true is sadly irrelevant at this point. Too much water under the bridge and movies and internet articles have probably worn out Jimbo and all of FSU’s leaders.
A fresh start in a professional environment may be all that Jameis has left from which to choose.
Derrick Brooks has basically placed his huge reputation on the line for Jameis. That comforts me greatly.

I’m going to be real disappointed if the owners let the fans down there push them away from drafting the best QB in the draft and arguably the best in the past couple drafts. There should be 0 questions on who the Bucs will take in this year’s draft and it’s definitely not the Kaepernik or Alex Smith clone. Mariota’s not going to last a full season with the big boys once he starts trying to run around like he did at Oregon. Once that running threat is gone his career as a starter will be over.

OK, the more I have studied and read I am a little more comfortable with Winston. But, we should try to find a solid veteran backup (face it, Glennon is getting traded, and McCown is a bum) that can hold the fort in case it doesn’t pan out…maybe Hoyer or Ryan Fitzpatrick?

There is a famous saying. You don’t make your own furniture look better by chopping up your neighbors! It’s great to point out Jameis’ strengths and he has many. But trying to make him look better by putting down Mariota is not really the way to go and it results in some specious posts.
Mariota’s not going to last a full season with the big boys once he starts trying to run around like he did at Oregon. Once that running threat is gone his career as a starter will be over.
That is a lame statement. Russell Wilson is 5-10 ½ about six inches and perhaps 40 lbs lighter than Mariota. He has not missed any serious time.
Mariota is also much quicker and more athletic than Wilson. And Mariota like Wilson is a very smart athlete who is dedicated to his craft. Football is not freaking rocket science although some dumb jocks may make it appear so.
Mariota is smart enough and will work hard enough to learn how and when to slide. He’s not a dim bulb! He’s incredibly coachable. The same is true for taking snaps from center. Those are all red herrings that really do not clearly describe Mariota.
Now if the pro evaluators come to the conclusion that he doesn’t have enough arm strength that will be an insurmountable hurdle. But all this other crap is just that…crap. He’s bright, motivated and he can learn how to protect himself when he runs just like Wilson and unlike RGIII who never seemed to realize the NFL is not college.

Bucs brass attended Rose Bowl and saw Shameis yell at Fisher! Heard crowd chanting No Means No! Imagine the 8 road games with Shameis. Imagine how loud New Orleans and Atlanta crowds would chant No Means No! Protesters at home games! Front office is not stupid!

Experts have said Winston has flaws in his mechanics. They aren’t going to kill him, but definitely need work. So stop acting like their are only off field issues. He has on field issues as well.

Seminoles won the national Championship and made it through to the playoffs with tremendous press coverage.
Bucs will be fine. So far no one has believed her story.
The outpouring of the Seminole Nation in support; and fair minded bucs fans, will more than offset a few haters.
Especially after Tampa gets to know the real Jameis; which is how Brooks describes him; rather than the distorted media view who are pushing an agenda.
Lovie is going to love the guy. Im sure he appreciates the fiery leadership vs.the calm acceptance of Mariota.

Pre-Draft talk by all the professional Talking Heads out there reminds me of a Twinkie…all fluff and filler. And let’s remember one thing about the ONLY difference between a Professional and an Amateur…the Professional gets paid.
We go through a daily grind of Jameis Winston talk, Haters vs Defenders, and I am a bit weary of all this back and forth over a decision that will be made regardless of how we feel about it, and in spite of what invectives we throw at each other. And now, I have to endure an auto-play anti-Mariota ad everytime I open a JBF discussion. (sigh)
I am grateful that we didn’t have the ability to unload our displeasure with the Bucs back in the 70’s and 80’s, and even early 90’s like we have nowadays with our Social Media outlets. I love JBF, but seriously, I shudder to think what we would have put on here during the Leeman Bennett/Ray Perkins days.
Buccaneer Fans have a long history of disappointment heaped upon disgust over ineptitude. We support our team through some of the most horrendous seasons (’76 – ’77, ’83 – ’86). But I don’t recall us hating on each other back then as we seem to do now. Perhaps it has much to do with the anonymity of the Internet, whereas if we spoke to each other face to face like this, there’d be a lot of broken faces. Seems to me, folks should just saddle up to the bar, and discuss our beloved team over a few cold pitchers and a lot of wings. I believe our conversations would still be heated, but a lot more civil. Maybe I’m just too retro.
It’s going to be a long wait till Draft Day, and I can’t wait till it’s over. How long till Opening Day?

Jamies Winston is not Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck took a 2-14 team, a team with less talent than this current Buccaneer roster to the playoffs in his first year. I don’t believe he can do that.
Now he is the best QB prospect coming out, all that simply means is he will need less time than the other QB’s.
Now what the real question is what would Lovie/Glazers will feel safest picking come April.

The media agenda I am referring to is the idea that rape at university campuses has reached epidemic proportions.
Totally false. When you read the NY Times and other media outlet accounts they never go into thr facts of the alleged victims multiple stories or how her own friends versions differ from hers. You wont hear any of that in this “documentary”.
A good example is the Rolling Stone fabrication about the gang rape at UV.
That is what I mean by it. I undrrstand the crab legs bb gun and profanity thing happened.
But those college pranks would never have gotten any attention without the rape case.

When it comes to the case of Winston he is in the public life. Anything he does is going be put on public display. We nit picked Maziel for the last two years and he didn’t have a rape allegation.
As for the rise of rape in college, I haven’t read the study so I’m not sure however one answer maybe more woman are coming forward as opposed to 20 years where many women were afraid to come forward. Like I said I’m not sure about the study however with Winston anything he does well command attention.

At the end of the day we all want the same goal for the Bucs, thsts WIN… So all the Winston haters out there if they draft him and he starts to turn this franchise back in the right direction you all will be jumping on the band wagon, that also goes for the Mariota haters as well. Sure we have a preference, but in reality we will be happy with how ever they draft if in the long run that person brings us victories and a championship..

I think it would be a lot more telling an endorsement if the endorsement came from someone outside of FSU and even more so if it came from outside of the state of Florida. The old ball coach is about the only person I have ever heard not give a fully ringing endorsement (Clowney) of a guy they coached, a guy they played with or a guy from their alma mater. Just a few weeks ago Brooks was saying he didn’t believe Jameis was ready, I guess he has spent the last few weeks with him?

The fact Brooks with to FSU doesn’t mean its homerism. All it means is Brooks has better insight than any one of us because he has access to first hand knowledge of the kid and maybe he’s just giving his honest opinion?

Its funny when Dungy endorses Mariota it’s bias because his son played with him, when Brooks comes out and endorses Jameis it’s the gospel. How can both not show bias? Dungy said he had his bias and Brooks said he is a bit of a homer. And out of state can be his home state, why do u guys get so up in arms I know you guys want him badly but stop getting your heart rate up when someone has an opposing view or brings up a valid question

I’m on board with Winston or a defensive pick being the Bucs first pick. It’s not like the fans can’t deal with a eventual failed pick, whoever it is. All the Bucs fans will support the pick after it is made. That I am sure of. I try to ignore the opposing sides. Hurry up and wait is the hardest part. The Bucs are going to be better, I am certain of that. Then again, I’ve felt this way since season one.

I’m a Winston guy, but I agree. This is a good QB draft. Winston is not Luck and I think Mariotta is better than Griffin. You’ve got to go back a while (past 2012) to find a draft with 2 QB’s of this quality.
