The 12-Year Anniversary

January 26th, 2015

Bucs fans know greatness intimately. That’s one reason why so much of the fan base walks around ill.

Our beloved Buccaneers haven’t been good in a while, and it’s been 12 years since the team was great — 12 years ago today.

So on this blessed anniversary of Super Bowl glory for Tampa Bay, Joe brings you a video cut that is sure to have your eyes swelling with tears, and your heart warmed with the burning of a winner.

Crack a cold one and enjoy.

That was a great day but we have not won a playoff game since then and it has been a long dry spell.

  2. Trevor Says:

    never gets old!
but reminds me how sad this franchise has become. head coach and player-wise

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I will be eternally grateful to Jon Gruden…..the thrill of my lifetime…..Go Bucs, do it again….!!!

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

When you think about the teams that have NOT won a Super Bowl, you have to ask the question……Would you endure 12 crappy years after winning the Super Bowl…….

    Wonder how they would answer?

Cleveland might say: Oh Hell Yeah!, with apologies to Stone Cold Steve Austin

  5. jb Says:

Before this game, I never thought I’d live to see us win a Lombardi Trophy. Now, I just hope and pray and can still be around when we win our next one.

  6. unbelievable Says:

    Ah, the good ole days

  7. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Just saw on ESPN that they had a piece about “The missing pieces”, which states how many players a team is away from being a Superbowl contender. It says we are 11 above average players away. To be considered a Super Bowl contender, 40 percent of the players who took part in at least 250 snaps (varies by team) have to be rated as good or elite.

We had 2 Elite players: McCoy and Verner
We had 1 Good player: Evans
We had 22 Average players: Lavonte David was placed here and I disagree with that.
We had 10 Bad players: I agreed with a majority except for Martin and Rainey. I really do believe they can do better with a credible O-Line.

So we have some holes to fill.

  8. INDYbucsfan Says:

Verner was elite and David good?!?!?

  9. Eric Says:

Nobody ever credits Chucky for the 2005 and 2007 division titles.

    Hardly “crappy teams”.

And let me extend my congratulations for all the goobers who ran the man out of town, and continue to trash him to this day.

    Great job.

    Hey Joes,
In remembrance of the last good head coach we’ve had here, how about playing that clip of Gruden going off on Chris Simms in practice?

“Jiminy Christmas, Chris! What the hell’s the problem? Y-27-Go-Zone-Deep Out-16-Blue-Cover-Post. It’s not that freakin difficult!”

That clip is classic! I’d go 2 dash whatever to see that again! And Lovie agrees.

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

I would drop Verner to “good” and raise LVD to “good” the rest of the list is spot on!

  12. lurker Says:

loved the superbowl and hope we win another soon.

gruden is so good that he has coached where since? there were issues, get over it.

  13. AK Says:

Gruden has chosen not to coach again, has had plenty of suitors since…and who can blame him for sticking with his current gig? Why deal with the aggravation? Gruden wasn’t perfect but he’s still awesome, those who hated on the guy, hope you’ve enjoyed the 30-66 record since he’s been fired.

  14. theodore Says:

Doctored balls have now tainted that win.

    Also, I like typing that.

  15. lurker Says:

the fact is he has not coached in the nfl or college since. your other stuff is conjecture and opinion. again you have no idea what was going on behind the scenes with gruden, then or now. nor do you know what the record would be if he had stayed.

  16. ChessMaster Says:

There was something going on. There are rumors. They cannot be repeated because there is no basis in fact. If Gruden ever coaches again ANYWHERE then the rumors are false. The fact he has not coached should be a clear indication of what happened if you put any thought into it at all.

  17. Barry Says:

    Thank you Coach.

  18. Vincente Says:

    Long live Gruden.

  19. Eric Says:

    Interesting fan base.

    Winners are hated.

    Idiots exalted.

  20. lurker Says:

sorry, eric, but things are never as simple as you seem to want them to be…

  21. Skyline Crew Says:

The Bucs have only had two coaches with winning records, if I remember correctly. I think Chucky deserves some form of respect from Bucs fan as the only one to bring home a SB.

  22. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks for the trip down memory lane Joe. What a special day that was for all Buccaneers fans – especially those who suffered through all the losing seasons before Dungy came to town.

The stars were aligned. Gruden was the perfect coach to take that team over the top and seeing that clip really makes makes me miss the passion he brought to the game from the sideline each week.

Having 4 future HOFers – at least 1 at each level of your Defense sure doesn’t hurt your chances in a situation like that.

Great trivia question from that game as well:
“Who is the only NFL Defensive player to have ever scored 2 TDs off interception returns in a single Super Bowl game? (Hint – he did NOT win the Super Bowl MVP award). Answer – Dwight Smith

  23. Hawk Says:

    theodore Said:

“Doctored balls have now tainted that win.

    Also, I like typing that.”

Why would anyone here care about the Patriots having a “tainted” win?

  24. Kevin S Says:

Wish Gruden would have came back…..I really wanted him back. would have been such a nice Reunion. Hopefully Lovie can bring this team another Championship but I’m not convinced. I would bet my house on this team going to the super Bowl if Gruden ever came back. Sucks…

  25. cmurda Says:

Guys just enjoy the video. I’ve seen it a thousand times and still I need you all to stop the whining and observe a moment of silence in honor of Derrick Brooks icing the game or John Lynch telling Ronde “we’re World Champs Baby!”. In the NFC Championship with Joe Jurevicius catch against the hated Eagles in their house for 71 huge yards. Ronde icing that baby up with the sweetest pick 6 I will ever see. These things don’t happen every year. Deal with it unless you’re a Hawks or Patsy fan. I hope we win 10 more but I’ll die happy if that was all we get. Horns honking all over the city. My apartment complex going crazy. Man, that was something.

hear this, hear this … hear, hear

  27. lurker Says:

it does seem like it was destined the way the playoffs unfolded. beating the gorilla in philly and playing vs gruden’s former team. sweet memories indeed.

  28. feelthepewterpower Says:

spider 2 y banana world champions!

  29. Fort Myers Dave Says:

Everything lined up perfectly in 2002 to win it all. The ‘niners were an “easy” matchup in the divisional playoff and they were very fortunate to beat the Giants the week before to advance in the wildcard match to play the Bucs. The Giants might have been a tougher opponent and probably matched up better vs the Bucs. Shaking the cold curse was key, first getting the 15-0 in Champaign against the Bears insured the first round bye and then of course was the Phillly game which really buried that sub 40 degree curse forever. Even after the Bucs dismantled the Eagles we have to remember that there were still many Buc skeptics as the Raiders were a 3.5 to 4 point favorite for the Super Bowl but then the Bucs simply dismantled the Raiders for what any Suncoast native has to consider to be one of the best days in Tampa history! No one: no troll, no hater of Tampa football can ever take that day from us Buc fans and we do have to thank Gruden for getting the offense effective enough to get the Bucs and their great defense over the top; something they just missed doing in 1999…. And to the followers of the other 2 Florida NFL franchises: our Bucs have a title in this century; the Jags have none, the Fins last title happened in 1972 and now Miami’s biggest highlight each year is watching Shula and a few of his social security eligible players chugging some ripple for the media at one of Coach Don’s overpriced steak houses when the last unbeaten NFL team loses each season…..

  30. BrianDorry55 Says:

It never gets talked about because of how lopsided our win ended up…but in a time of heavily criticized decisions by NFL officials….how absolutely god-awful of a blatant gift to make that game closer was that touchdown catch by Jerry Porter? There is no way….absolutely 0% chance that was a touchdown catch…and it’s not like it was called that way on the field and they let is stand….they actually found “indisputable evidence” that he caught that ball….”Are you outta your mind!? Are you outta your skull!?”

  31. Jim Says:

My wife & I have had season tickets since 1977 & sat thru many ‘wonderful seasons’ I recall half way thru the season I told my wife we may be seeing something ‘special’ this year. Indeed we did. Such a shame that Gruden & McKay could not put their egos in check and worked TOGETHER a few more years to keep the team on top. As most recall the Eagles game was the real Superbowl. Such a sweet victory in Philly!

  32. Rob Says:

    goosebumps… thank you joe
