“Tampa’s Actually Giving Their Cards Out A Little Bit”

January 24th, 2015

WinstonMariota

Are the Bucs leaning towards drafting University of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota?

A former college QB and a leading FOX analyst says look closely.

On FOX Sports 1 last night (video below), their resident QB guru, ex-Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt, makes a case that the hires of offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian mean the Bucs are looking at drafting a running QB in the spread-option mold.

“Tampa’s actually giving their cards out a little bit and showing people what their intentions are,” Klatt said.

Joe really doesn’t buy all this dot connecting when it comes to coaching. You can watch the video to understand.

Frankly, the biggest Bucs lean (if there is one) toward Tampa Bay drafting a Mariota-type quarterback, is Lovie Smith claiming last year that he would like to emulate three NFL programs: Carolina, Seattle and San Francisco.

I hope he is spot on!

  2. Tom Edrington Says:

Heard the guy from Walter Camp football on 620 today. I believe him when he said the Bucs have scouted Winston moreso than Mariota.

That’s no great revelation, of course they would have seen more of Winston with him being in-state and closer geographically for the Bucs, I would think they scout more schools in the Southeast than any other region.

If Winston can get past the interview process, and that may be a big “IF” well, he could be the guy.

Personally, I don’t care what they do, they are the ones being paid the big bucks to make good decisions and there haven’t been many great decisions made by this regime yet.

So basically, it’s do or die time for Lovie and friends, don’t you think?

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Given Lovie’s long history of bad choices I’d bet he does want Mriota. Glazer boys can’t afford any more of Lovie’s bad decisions so it will be Winston. It’s the only choice. Loive needs Winston more than Winston needs Lovie. Winston will be a winner for years in the NFL and so will Mariota down the road. Lovie and his dinosaur ways will be back in the basement where he belongs.

  4. Luther Says:

I saw that this morning. I think its dumb to be honest. Why would you put all your eggs into one basket? What happens when Mariota gets hurt? Glennon won’t be running the spread offense. I thing I trust Charlie Campbell more.

  5. JFF Says:

That Charlie Campbell clown from Walterfootball is infamous for being wrong all the time and he’s no doubt being fed BS in this scenario.

Remember how the Bucs “zeroed in” on Manziel last year? How about when the reports surfaced that Donald was the guy? This front office believes in sending out smokescreens.

  6. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @TomE

“So basically, it’s do or die time for Lovie and friends, don’t you think?”

Agree with your entire post including that last statement. Yes I do think that!

OT I remember reading you have a sports journalism background, I believe as a print reporter.

I have a question for you. When I was still doing it…80-95..I used to go to the annual Conference preseason events where the coaches all gave their spiel about the upcoming season. I suspect you have been to share of these events as well.

One thing that all my reporters friends…TV..radio..print..before blogs lol…all agreed was that the basketball coaches were always more entertaining, more charisma, less boredom than football coaches. Football coaches almost always needed a personality transplant. They were the black holes of personality while even the least successful roundball coaches were at least entertaining to interview and to hang out with at the cocktail parties that surround these events.

Just curious about your observation. Did you see the same thing?

  7. knucknbuc Says:

Exactly jff. Mariota is the choice simply because of all the “reports” saying we love Winston since when has this team been transparent about a draft pick the last 10 years? Mariotta is the guy.

  8. snook Says:

Yep. Because Koetter had Matt Ryan running the spread option.

    What a moron.

The pick is Winston. Get over it folks.

  9. JGW 1981 Says:

    @Luther

Actually, I think you accidentally and unknowingly hit the nail on the head: “Glennon won’t be running the spread offense.” You’re right. Because he won’t be here. It will be be McCown leading the charge into the season, with Mariota taking over either when he stinks it up or he is ready–probably the former.

  10. snook Says:

    Spread option QBs are garbage.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think we aren’t tipping anything…but we are hiring coaches that can run either offense…..

Glennon won’t be running the spread or the “pro-style” offense for us because he won’t be there…..McCown will probably restructure and be our backup or early starter…..Fans could accept that if we draft either QB at # 1 knowing that McCown’s future is a few games…..

  12. D-Rome Says:

Koetter coached in Atlanta and worked with Matt Ryan.

People compare Mike Glennon to Matt Ryan. Therefore…

Glennon is still the QB of the future.

    You heard it here first.

    Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…….

  13. Destinjohnny Says:

Drafting and scouting wins more games then coaching – see Barry Switzer

  14. Lion Says:

This is laughable, talk about reaching…

  15. SuperSam Says:

@Lion How is that a reach?? Both new coaches have familiarity with spread offenses and running quarterbacks. Where does the reach come from? In fact Dirk and Mark Helfrich coach of Oregon are really really close. The pick is Mariota, has been since late last year, if you Winston lovers want a immature punk at quarterback go talk to a Browns fan and see how that’s working out for them. Just read an article today that Manziel might not even be on the team by start of the season because of his immaturity, ask yourself do you really want that?? The answer is no.

  16. SuperSam Says:

One could even make the argument that Winston has more off the field stuff coming out of college than Manziel did, and that’s scary as hell. Manziel was known as a party boy, but he was never “accused” of rape, caught on camera stealing, property damage, this list goes on and on. Kids just don’t grow up overnight, especially with 20 million to burn in there pocket!

  17. lurker Says:

    Coaching career

Koetter was the head coach at Highland HS (ID) for two seasons (1983–1984) before becoming a full-time college assistant coach. His college coaching career began in 1985 as the offensive coordinator at San Francisco State University. He then coached at UTEP (1986–1988), Missouri (1989–1993), Boston College (1994–1995), and Oregon (1996–1997).

Koetter was the head coach for three seasons at Boise State from 1998 to 2000, then moved to Arizona State in 2001. His record with the Broncos was 26–10 (.722), with two Big West Conference titles and two bowl victories. At Arizona State, Koetter compiled a 40–34 (.541) record, and four winning seasons in six years. Under Koetter, the Sun Devils became known for a vertical passing attack. He held a 1–11 record against top 10 teams, and was 2–19 (.095) against ranked teams. On November 26, 2006, The Arizona Republic reported that Koetter was being terminated as ASU football coach.[1] His final game was the 2006 Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve, a 41–24 loss.

In 2007, Koetter accepted the position of offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). In his first season with the Jaguars, the offense improved from tenth in the league (338.9 yards per game) to seventh (357.4 yards per game). Koetter has been instrumental in the development of Jaguars offensive players Maurice Jones-Drew, Mike Sims-Walker, and Marcedes Lewis. Koetter was named, in addition to his duties as offensive coordinator, as the team’s quarterbacks coach on November 30, 2011, with the firing of wide receivers coach Johnny Cox and the switch of quarterbacks coach Mike Sheppard to wide receivers coach.

On January 15, 2012, Koetter was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. On January 2, 2013, the Atlanta Falcons signed Koetter to a contract extension that runs through the 2014 season.

On January 8, 2015, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced the hiring of Koetter as their new offensive coordinator.[2] [3]

  18. lurker Says:

    hmmmmmmmm

so in his last 7 years, as an oc in the nfl no less, he did not run a spread offense. perhaps he knows that junk don’t work with the big boys.

also, from above: “Under Koetter, the Sun Devils became known for a vertical passing attack. He held a 1–11 record against top 10 teams, and was 2–19 (.095) against ranked teams.”

that junk didn’t work against good teams in college

    but, yeah, this means mariotta…lmao

  19. kevin Says:

I think at the time of lovie saying that he was refering to the defense. The thing that excites me the most is lovie knows nothing about running a spread offense which means he will be keeping his nose out of the playcalling on gameday!!!

  20. jfat Says:

Tired of the dot connecting. The key is both the OC and QBC are versatile, they wont try to shoe-horn either QB in to a system that doesn’t fit their strengths. They can go in to the combine / pro days / draft, looking for the better player not the better fit for their philosophy.

  21. Couch Fan Says:

    @SuperSam

Your hate makes you look like a true idiot. Manziel and Winston have nothing in common. Not even there off field issues. Lol. Keep reaching for reasons to continue your hate. Just make sure your hear April 30th so we can all laugh at your stupidity and then move on in support of our new franchise QB Famous Jameis.

  22. Couch Fan Says:

Well I guess they both won Heismans? I guess that is 1 thing they have in common.

  23. mike atkinson Says:

Sure is a bunch of dumb ass people making comments on this site. Must have caught something from that brilliant coach of yours. I do see some improvement next year. 3 and 13. You heard it here first…………..

  24. 77bassguitarist Says:

Stop all the hate joe, did you read the article on pro football talk yesterday about how much of a loser and drunk scumbag you’re boy manzeil is? I haven’t forgotten you’re crush on him last yr.

  25. R.O. Says:

Not sure why people would want to draft a QB that you’re going to have to spend the entire OTAs trying to get them to learn how to call an actually play in a huddle. He doesn’t audible nor does he no protections. Crazy… Keeping a list of all your call names on here so when MM is an official BUST 3 years from now none of you will have any credibility and will either change your Id’s or stop thinking you know to evaluate football talent.

  26. Owlykat Says:

Lovie probably signed an ex-duck HC as his OC so Mariota would declare for the NFL and would want to be a Buc. I can’t see a principled Coach who could not stomach Williams would have any stomach for Bad Boy Winston as the face of his Franchise. But we know from last year L & L will disguise their true intentions in the draft. Hey, last year a lot of pundits were singing the praises of the eventual first pick last year, who had lots of questions about his head despite his superior freakish ability. So how did that work out for Houston? I am the first to admit that Winston has superior freakish ability but he is a head case just like last year’s 1st pick. I don’t see Lovie taking him nor Licht risking his job on such a big risk! Sorry Winston Lovers. Now Lovie needs to tell his OC to fire Warhop and find a decent OL Coach who can protect our investment in Mariota. Seattle and San Fran and Charlotte all have Mariota type QB’s, hint hint!!!

  27. SuperSam Says:

@couchfan, Ya im an idiot to think your thug Jameis is gonna totally grow in 4 months, good one. Let me guess, you also think he just “misunderstood and being a kid” just like they said about Manziel a year ago. YOUR THE IDIOT!

  28. Pickgrin Says:

Is it really going to be like this for 3 more months? LOL

New OC and new QB coach both have experience with Pro style AND spread/read option type offensive systems. They are versatile and can adapt to the players they have to work with.

No way do the Bucs have their QB choice set in stone yet. They may have a preference at this point – but to have already made up their minds prior to all investigative results, personal interviews, pro days, combine etc would be downright irresponsible.

Most all “experts” (even those who favor Mariota because of Jameis “character concerns”) give the edge to Winston when it comes to on field QB play.
Unless Lovie has his heart set on running a spread option type offense (which I seriously doubt – bit in which he case he would obviously choose Mariota) – then it just makes more sense to draft Winston who has shown himself to be “pro ready” in only 2 years at FSU like few other QBs in history ever coming out have.

Lovie has to win now – and McCown is not good enough to be the difference maker at QB that this team so desperately needs. (Neither is Glennon obviously).

If the Bucs like what they hear and see from and learn about Jameis Winston through the extensive vetting process that is well under way now, then they are likely to take him #1. His on-field capabilities, the winning success he has had and his obvious leadership qualities make Winston definitely worthy of that #1 designation. If the Bucs satisfy themselves that Winston is not a “character risk” and believe that he will be able to keep his nose relatively clean – then they are very likely to draft him.

If Mariota is the pick – then we can assume they were not comfortable with what they uncovered about Winston. Or if we see them running an Offense that resembles a spread and/or utilizes run/option and designated QB run plays next year – then we will know they wanted Mariota over Winston for on-field reasons.

  29. Jacko101 Says:

Super Sam, a thug is a bit of a harsh label and totally not applicable. He’s not Aaron Hernandez.

  30. Jonny 2.3 Says:

@Tom Edrington: Sensible take. Have you stopped writing on B/R btw?

  31. Soggy Says:

Singing – wheels on the bus goes round and round, round and round, come on friggin april 30th hurry up.. 🙂

  32. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

I have been thinking Winston, but this morning story on Daily Beast that the film documentary about Winston’s accuser was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. Story is online at http://www.thedailybeast.com. I read that story and went..”uh-oh”. Just on a PR thing when this will be in Theaters, CNN, Fox News around draft time? Cant see Winston coming here, not on that. How is it we didnt know a film documentary wasnt being produced. Thats huge..

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Pickgrin

Wow….a Winston supporter & Mariota supporter agreeing…..well done!!!

  34. NewTampaChris Says:

I doubt the Bucs know who they’ll draft yet. Depends on how high they grade Winston on the Turd Scale.

  35. Eric Says:

Lovie picked the offensive rookie of the year candidate.

As for the tea leaves the most impressive half of football jameis had was vs. Auburn.

They switched things around to get the ball out of his hands quicker. Looked a hell of a lot like Matt Ryan.

And, unlike Mariota, won the NC.

Matt ryan doesnt run much and throws it down the field beautifully. Winston looks a lot more like him than Marcus.

As a matter of fact Atlanta’s offense is much closer to FSU than Oregon.

    Its perfect for Jameis.

  36. T REX Says:

No way the Bucs take Winston with all negative press that is going to be associated with the team that picks him. That documentary is going to be explosive. Sorry but Winston is too much of a liability now.

  37. Walter White Says:

You Winston supporters are becoming more and more just like your boy… smh

If the pick indeed is Mariota (hello), at least he’s a guy WE CAN ALL GET BEHIND AND BELIEVE IN. Controversy free! No worry of your ‘franchise’ QB ending up in prison! NONE!

  38. bucs4lyfe Says:

Bucs can afford to tip their hands because it’s the first overall pick. If your a team wanting one of these quarterbacks those are the only teams on the edge of their seats but it’s obvious it’s going to be a quarterback, to early to be guessing

  39. Delson Says:

What if all this hoopla is bait for chip to trade up? Maybe we aren’t looking at qb in the first. But number 20 is a helluva drop to grab a top player at any position. I just know I’m tired of the mediocrity of tampa bays offenses. All that ” the ground n pound has worked since forever” talk doesn’t apply to us, at least since the A train. Mariota should be the pick along with an aggressive offense. Winston likes to throw into double coverages a lot which might not be bad thing with our tall wrs n te. But our te hasn’t proved anything n vjax is declining rapidly. Mariota made the correct reads at oregon. He knew the routes n anticipated the open side of the field. Winston is total opposite throwing picks n making bonehead decisions off the field. Pick mariota

  40. Tom S. Says:

The fact that this idiot makes a Dirk Koetter-Mark Helfrich connection when Helfrich never ran an offense like Oregon’s until he arrived to work for Chip Kelly, should tell you all you need to know. Koetter historically runs a vertical passing offense which is more of a Winston ffense than Mariota and Helfrich’s connection does more for inside information than any actual scheme.

  41. Eric Says:

The documentary is irrelevant. Just shows her in a worse light than before.

I doubt there will be much coverage. Story has been beat to death and Jameis was cleared.

  42. rayjay1122 Says:

It is funny to me that so many ignorant, over indoctrinated fools are actually making a big deal over Winston making a gesture before the bowl game that resembled smoking pot. How stupid our society is. Wow. I guess smoking pot is about the same as murder. Maybe Winston should be thrown in prison with Hernandez. SMH at the ignorance of our laws, politicians and judgmental hypocrites. I don’t personally think Winston is going to be the next great QB but mentioning his gesture as a detractor is beyond idiotic. This country is becoming the least free, “free country” on Earth. Why can’t the evaluation of Winston versus Mariota be focused on the skill set, leadership qualities and intangibles. Oh and if he smokes that evil pot or even pretends to ten by God, let’s put him in a cell and throw away the key. Bureaucracy, hypocrisy and oppression is ruining this nation and the perception of people toward one another. I am not on team Winston but damn people, wake the hell up. A gesture should not even be an issue in his evaluation. I guess the freedom of speech is another right that has been taken from us. I like Mariota but some people are just over the top with hating on Winston and pot for that matter.

  43. Trubucfan22 Says:

The buccaneers seem to always draft the guy people expect them to draft. It’s a little early to to say who they covet more. I think the interview process will make the final decision. But if you start seeing all the mock drafts having us pick the same player you will know who we will draft. The Bucs can’t keep a secret. We have too many loud mouths in the offices. I can’t rember the last draft we didn’t draft the guy everyone thought we’d draft.

  44. Rex Says:

Anyone that sees Walter whites comment just got dumber from hearing that. I’ve literally sad this the last 4 W vs M debates. The people that don’t like Winston and don’t want him only talk about the off field stuff. Thank you Walter white for proving my point about how quick some people are to give up on Winston. Anyone that is watching the senior bowl can hear the scouts commenting on how OCs don’t like spread QBs because they take too long and don’t know how to read defenses (jameis knows how to). Jameis is the only QB besides Hundley in the draft that comes from a pro style offense and knows how to read defenses. But you don’t have to agree with me if you don’t want to. You can just see for yourself when Jameis is ROY next year for either us or another team and you all can learn from scouts about what to look for in a college QB.

  45. Trubucfan22 Says:

I bet ray jay smokes a ton of weed. Ray jay, it’s not the fact that weed isn’t a dangerous or lethal drug, it’s the fact that it’s still illegal. And if Winston wants to get high on his off days, he will get suspended and eventually kicked out of the NFL. Why should we draft him if he won’t be on the field because he’s worried about his next high instead of his next opponent. It all factors into football decisions. A guy who smokes weed is a liability. He will get caught and he will get suspended. What good is a qb that is suspended? I don’t care if half the world smokes weed, have at it. But I don’t want the qb of the Bucs smoking anything. It means he makes stupid decision that effects the entire franchise.

  46. Delson Says:

I don’t think of winston as a thug. But his carelessness with how he is handling his soon to be career is f#&!in stupid. Does carelessness show up on the field? U can’t always play 3 shitty quarters n follow with a great 4th. ASK JOSH FREEMAN WHAT THAT WAS LIKE..

  47. Eric Says:

    “Thre’s gonna be a documentary”

    Hee hee hee hee.

    Oh goodie goodie.

    See see.

Pathetic. The depth people will go to hate on a kid is unbelievable.

  48. Eric Says:

    It was a duck call……

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ rayjay1122

You and I agree on most things….but the “pot” gesture on national television….freedom of speech or not…..legal or not……moral or not…..is just another example of his immaturity……that in an of itself is no problem at all….but it has to be viewed along with all the other childish baggage he brings….it becomes relevant.
The last time I checked…..the drug is illegal in the NFL…..maybe it shouldn’t be but it is. Winston, by making that sign is being disrepectful to the NFL & its rules.
Some say it wasn’t a pot sign at all…he was making the sign of a duck…..maybe so….but, yet another issue. And if you think it will be the last…..think again.
Winston will have to live like Jeter to shake off his past.

  50. Trubucfan22 Says:

Scouts love pro style qbs. That’s a fact. It makes their job easy when the qb is already doing NFL type stuff. It makes scouts work harder and dig deeper if the qb is in a spread offense, but it doesn’t mean the pro style qb is a better qb than a spread qb. It just makes scouting easier. You can’t say Winston is a better qb based on the system he played in. And sure Winston will have a more immediate success in the NFL, but if mariota projects to be better in the long run after he develops, then i would want mariota. Just because Winston is more experience in the pro style doesn’t make him better, ok, maybe for 1 year.

  51. rayjay1122 Says:

Rayjay has smoked weed. Not currently. I could pass any drug test without tampering or cheating right now. I now what type of people keep it illegal though. My point is judging him for a gesture is ignorant. I Guess being a drunk is preferred though. My point is that our laws are hypocrisy. My other point is that Winston did not do anything wrong with a gesture. You people who are indoctrinated by law makers can continue your hating though. So NJ o I am not pimping pot. I am pro freedom which I did my part to fight for and I have earned my right to express my opinions as well as for you to express yours.

  52. R.O. Says:

Sorry now we’re saying JW smokes? Has he failed drug tests in college? Been suspended for anything other then saying F that P? Seriously.. Warren Sapp failed plenty of drug tests for Marijuana. No outcry then…. Something happened that night with that girl.. However there are 2 sides to every story which is why they didn’t prosecute and was not disciplined at the student hearing. Move on.. Stop believing everything you read. Especially onesided stories that are warped to make you believe what it wants.

  53. rayjay1122 Says:

    @TBBF

You make valid points. I actually understand the issues that you reminded me of. I am not anti conservative as I am by faith a believer but I definitely do not agree with the laws of the land but I can’t change anything. I do love this country. I just wish people had more rights until they prove that they can’t handle them.

  54. T REX Says:

@ Eric – If you don’t think that documentary is a big deal then you’re probably stupid. It casts MORE bad light on Winston and Tally PD. You must be an FSU honk because you idiots are the only ones that want that dirtbag(besides JBF).

No way you take an alleged rapist and the surrounding terrible PR.

  55. Pickgrin Says:

There is no reason to believe or even suspect that Winston consumes any illegal substances. No evidence of this whatsoever. The gesture being referred to was obviously not a “smoking marijuana gesture” – it was a duck call gesture – they were playing the Oregon Ducks!

    Trubucfan22 Says:
    January 24th, 2015 at 6:07 pm
I can’t rember the last draft we didn’t draft the guy everyone thought we’d draft.

So 2 years ago, everyone thought Bucs were drafting Mark Barron with a high 1st round pick? Is that what you “rember”?

  56. Hagadone Says:

The Bucs may pass on Winston, but there is zero chance they are taking Mariota with the #1 pick overall. There is absolutely no value in it. He is a complete project.

  57. R.O. Says:

And when they came out of the tunnel and showed JW I recognized right away what he was doing… Because someone goes on the radio and says it was mocking smoking that’s what you believe. You must be part of the Religious Right Moral Majority and watch Fox News. Some info for you.. The world is round, the Earth orbits the sun and there are no death panels.

  58. Cascade Says:

I agree that the connect-the-dots game is purely empty speculation. They’ll pick the QB that has the best chance at NFL success regardless of style. Both the OC and QB coach have coached more traditional NFL offenses as well. Also, who’s to say that Winston couldn’t run a spread/up-tempo offense? The read-option part might not be his forte, but the rest of it shouldn’t be a problem for him physically. This is all silliness.

But, there are some clues that Lovie has given going as far back as last year, when he talked about a preference for QBs with wheels. He wants athleticism at every position, he has said. Still these are minor hints.

It’s no slam dunk that they wanna run a spread-option scheme, but Lovie has said that he’d like to have those components as part of an offense if I recall correctly. Still, it’s way too early to conclude anything about their QB preference.

  59. Skyline Crew Says:

    Supersam

I recommend looking up the Patriots scouting on Manziel. After reading their report I can’t believe Joe or any team wanted him.

  60. Skyline Crew Says:

    It wasn’t a duck call

  61. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here is the problem……Winston is…and will be….under a microscope….everything he does will be evaluated, judged, debated and regurgitated…..that’s the way it is when you’re a public figure….it comes with the territory.
When you have a reputation that proceeds you…it makes it even more difficult to overcome….and you won’t get the benefit of the doubt.

I don’t think Winston smokes joints in his spare time and is going all Ricky Williams on us….but, you see what just happened to him with the “Duck vs Pot sign)?

FYI…….did Pot, Ludes & other controlled substances when younger…..so, I’ve got no ax to grind…..

  62. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Now we have to add….

    If it walks like a duck…..talks like a duck…..makes a sign like a duck…..it’s a duck!!!

  63. rayjay1122 Says:

I was not attempting to insinuate that Winston was making a pot smoking gesture. He made the gesture that he said he made. I am not in Winston ‘s corner but the problem I have is with the “system”. I know we are all entitled to our own opinions and moral values. It was not my intention to start any political or religious debates. The Winston vs Mariota on the field debate is enough to deal with. I apologize to anyone who I may have offended with my political venting.

  64. ufcguy Says:

Unless he is a horrible qb. So no I can’t just get behind mariotta

  65. SuperSam Says:

“Kinsman’s case finally gained some traction in November 2013, when it was reported that DNA provided by Winston matched a DNA sample taken from her underwear on the night of the alleged assault. The odds of the DNA belonging to someone other than Winston were 1 in 2.2 trillion. She couldn’t fathom why it took 11 months for the case to make its way to local prosecutors”.
Sounds like he’s guilty to me, sounds like Florida State covered his ass. Do the right thing Lovie, take Mariota. Here’s the whole story. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/01/24/jameis-winston-s-rape-accuser-tells-all-in-sundance-documentary-the-hunting-ground.html

  66. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @rayjay1122

No need for apologies here…..we have rape accusers, racist accusers…….bb gun enthusiasts……meme apologizers…..athletic supporters..pot sign conspiritors……we have it all here on JBF…..political rants aren’t excluded….just gobbled up in the mire of the debate….

  67. rayjay1122 Says:

Told the judge a few weeks ago.

Just a sensationalized story that as usual does not point out her inconsistencies and how her account disagrees with the physical evidence and what her friends say.

    A bunch of nonsense.

  69. SuperSam Says:

Let me ask you something Joe, since your a business man. How are you gonna feel when your female buccaneer fans stop coming to this website because of Winston? I have several buccaneer lady friends and they’ve all said the same thing, we draft Winston they’ll no longer support the team or any website that supports him, Right or wrong women stick together on cases like this.

  70. BoltIsle Says:

Lovie seemed to be ok with Brandon Marshall as a face of the franchise in Chicago. He had a much worse past both off field and in the locker room.

  71. Eric Says:

Something tells me Jameis Winston isn’t hurting joes traffic a bit.

    Just a wild guess.

  72. BoltIsle Says:

Saying that women stick together and believe Jameis is guilty, is as delusional as saying SuperSam speaks for all Buccaneers fans.
If they’re that outraged, they should be pulling their team support already for him even being considered.

  73. Dave Pear Says:

Something tells me that SuperSam doesn’t have several “Lady Friends.”
Heck, I’d be surprised if he had any “Real” friends.

  74. Eric Says:

    “Ladyfriends”…………

I guess sexist nicknames dont bother them a bit.

  75. T REX Says:

The Bucs won’t be drafting that rapist.

Eric, how about a friendly wager? $100? $1000?

  76. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo has many, many lady friends….he calls them his chicas…..Pablo doesn’t know why he has so many….it must be Pablo’s machismo.”
“Anyway…Pablo thinks the girls will remain Buc fans no matter who we draft….because the real girl Buc fans have real Buc men…..and the real Buc men have bought them real tight Buc clothes”

  77. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    R. O.

Let me get this straight. You are forcing YOUR beliefs upon him, but you accuse him of doing it? Amd you talk of religious people as though they are evil, or are the morale police?

People like you make me ashamed to have served my country. You speak of freedom, but you criticise the use of it by the religious sect.

  78. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I agree with supersam. Play that on your fiddle.

  79. Cody Says:

Winston is the obvious choice assuming he has a good combine and his background clears.

He’s easily the best QB because of his toughness, his arm, and his play-making ability…Winston is a classic drop back QB that can also beat you with his feet if need be; he fits most Pro-style offenses and could even run a little zone-read in certain situations if asked…”Lets not over-think this” He’s a little ruff around the edges but he has a rare skill-set that doesn’t come around often if ever…

    My Pre-Combine Mock…

Rd1. Jameis Winston (QB) – FSU
Rd2. Cameron Irving (OL) – FSU
Rd2. Denzel Perryman (ILB) – Miami (Mike Glennon traded to Cleveland)
Rd3. Phillip Dorsett (WR) – Miami
Rd5. Jalston Fowler (FB) – Alabama
Rd6. Zach Wagenmann (DE) – Montana
Rd7. Sam Carter (SS) – TCU

  80. Sick of this $hit Says:

Your good Joe, but I have you figured out. All these Winston vs Mariota articles are posted here daily so that come draft day, we will all be so sick and tired of the arguing our points and fighting ourselves, that we will just be happy its over. No matter who we pick.
It sure will be fun watching Winston play in January for another team if we take Mariota though. Just my $0.02.

  81. bucfan999 Says:

God I hope he’s right we take Mariota and we don’t get the Josh Freeman clone Winston

  82. Tom Edrington Says:

    @St. Pete Bucfan:

    You are exactly right.

Basketball coaches are more personable, more accessible, I think because overall they are big promoters of their sport. Football is king and that’s where the biggest egos are.

I did find some great NFL coaches very approachable….I became good friends with Hank Stram over the years, starting when he interviewed for the Bucs job, I actually picked him up at the airport, unbeknownst to no one, not even the Tribune staff….I waited in the Buc lobby for three hours while he met with Culverhouse then took him right back to the airport. He told me that he most likely wouldn’t be the guy because Culverhouse didn’t want to spend the money Hank required of him…..

Yeah, basketball guys were the best, football coaches have a propensity to cheat on the golf course. Makes me wonder if Belichick plays golf? I know Brady does!

  83. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Lol it’s mock draft season, aka smoke and mirrors time. The more interest the Bucs show in Mariota (or Winston), the more another team will be willing to give up for the No. 1 pick (Eagles). It’s January, there are no “cards” to show. No team knows who they are going to pick in January, not even the first team to pick.

  84. lurker Says:

    @trubucfan22
“I can’t rember(sic) the last draft we didn’t draft the guy everyone thought we’d draft.”

    2012 draft
mark barron instead of morris claiborne
    via wikipedia
Coming into the NFL draft, Claiborne was predicted to be drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the number 5 pick overall or even the 4th overall pick to the Minnesota Vikings. The first day of the NFL draft was held on April 26, 2012. On the first day of the draft, the Buccaneers traded out of the 5th pick to the 7th pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars selected Oklahoma State University wide-receiver Justin Blackmon with their newly acquired 5th overall pick. The Cowboys then traded with the St. Louis Rams (who had expressed their desire to trade out of the 6th pick in order to collect more draft picks) for the 6th pick, and selected Claiborne ahead of the Buccaneers. The St. Louis Rams received the Cowboys’ 2012 first and second round selections (14th and 45th overall) while the Cowboys received the 2012 first round selection (6th overall). Buccaneers drafted safety Mark Barron with the 7th overall pick.

also we weren’t the only ones high on barron:
“Boy, is this a solid pick. I love this kid because his floor and ceiling are the same thing. His ceiling is to be a Pro Bowl safety; his floor is to be a Pro Bowl safety. That’s how good this young man is. This is going to be a good football team next year.”
-Mike Mayock, former NFL safety and current NFL Network analyst

but some people here still say we wanted claiborne despite being told otherwise. either way, surprise!

  85. lurker Says:

who really knows what happened with dom and schiano.

i doubt the bucs move down this year, though.

  86. Eric Says:

I’m not saying I have a clue as to who the bucs will pick.

I have no expertise in that area. If Lovie and co. Draft Marcus im behind it.

However, I am an experienced criminal lawyer on both prosecution and defense side.

That case would not have been filed no matter who it was against.

My position is that bogus rape charge shouldn’t prevent the bucs from selecting him. And the other stuff is small potatoes.

    Pick the best QB.

  87. JFat Says:

Funny lurker, Barron is the first name that popped in my head when I read that post from trubuc too. Too bad Keuchly wasn’t the surprise pick :/

  88. Jack Says:

Agreed, Joe. Could be a smoke screen to get trade offers. However, Coach Smith recently said there will a BUCS offense; implying the new coaches will create a signature BUCS Offense.

  89. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    They’re taking Winston over Mariota.

The wager is still in place for anyone that wants it.

I say they take Jameis. If I’m right you buy me a Winston jersey. If I’m wrong I buy you a Mariota jersey…

    Any takers?

  90. T REX Says:

@ Eric – was the investigation IYHO, handled properly?

  91. lurker Says:

there was someone wanting to bet for mariota yesterday, 87. i can’t remember who it was but told him there were takers…but no response.

  92. Rob Says:

“I’m not saying I have a clue as to who the bucs will pick.”

And anyone walking around the internet pretending they know at this point is a fool.

  93. Stanglassman Says:

    I’ll take that bet T-Rex.

BTW Marcus M. has much more in common with Johny Manzel than Jameis.

  94. Eric Says:

I’ve read the police reports it seemed perfectly normal to me.

No matter when the police did anything it wouldnt change the fact she gave so many versions of the story her credibility was damaged.

That hasn’t changed as she is stating yet another version in the “documentary”.

Ill say this because I have seen it play out many times. The number one cause of a false rape allegation is the complainant covering up a consensual encounter because they had a boyfriend or significant other.

That’s in this case. The boyfriends DNA. And she refused to tell the police his name.

    Humongous red flag.

  95. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    Guess not…ho hum.

The closer we get to draft day…I’m taking the wager off the table.

It takes all the fun out of it after the combine and pro day.

  96. Mr. Patrick Says:

    My Bucs Draft Prediction:
    Round 1 – Jameis Winston
    Round 2 – Jimbo Fisher
Round 3 – Tallahassee Police Department

  97. Lions Says:

Police waiting 10 months is not normal, I absolutely disagree that this was handled properly. We shall see where the suit goes against Fsu. As to the letter sent to gov. Scott going public stating two other women were discouraged from not leveling charges against Winston does not help perception of a pattern.

  98. Luther Says:

We should have a poll asking what is everyone’s favorite type of crab. It’s obvious that the Mario supporters would prefer Crusty Crab but I’m getting King Crabs for draft day.

  99. BucIt941 Says:

At this point I don’t care which one it is as long as “said” QB can put the Franchise on his back and lead us to contention. Im tired of being a fan to the laugh stock Franchise of the NFL!

I would like to say, “YES I am a Bucs fan” and actually be proud about that!

  100. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Supersam
I agree with you. Glazers don’t want to alienate the entire female fanbase. Ladies aren’t exactly fond of guys that have been accused of sexual assault. And you have to remember that one of the Glazer siblings is a woman who might not want the “face” of her family’s team to be somebody with that cloud over them

  101. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Luther
You should also get some Blue Crabs as after the Bucs don’t draft Winston you will be feeling very Blue

  102. lurker Says:

sorry, pat, that you will feel alienated, but you don’t speak for all women.

  103. Nybucsfan Says:

I don’t think they draft Winston for the simple fact there are fans that have a hate for him. You pick a player like that you lose what 10 to 15% of your fan base. Every away game the home fans chanting no means no. I’m sure the away fans at Raymond James do the same.

  104. Nybucsfan Says:

They had a thing on ESPN there other day that said the day he signs and gets his bonus he will be in civil court.

  105. David Says:

The moment Winston signs an NFL contract, his accuser will slap him with a lawsuit.

Whether that will be a distraction or not…who knows. But that is very likely to happen and why the accuser is waiting.

  106. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Nybucsfan
Correct on both points. However I think the 10-15% will be much higher. The Glazers want to fill up the stadium, not empty it out.
And yes, the “NO MEANS NO” chants will be everywhere and not just on the road. One enormous PR nightmare
And yes, it will be hard to learn an NFL playbook while sitting in a courtroom

  107. Luther Says:

I don’t like blue crabs. Way too much work and quite frankly not worth the trouble.

  108. lurker Says:

you little people are so funny…and sad at the same time.

  109. BoltIsle Says:

So the fans will leave if Winston is drafted only to return to merely chant no mean no?

    Highly doubtful.

As for any lawsuit, as has been pointed out, not likely to go far since she has five different versions as to what happened. That poor girl has gotten so much bad legal advice, it’s sad. Remember how her most recent attorney said Winston didn’t want it to get to an actual hearing? Then a retired Chief Justice, with no ties to the school, couldn’t even find 51% of fault against him and
    found issues on both parties?

I wouldn’t expect many on these boards have actually read the accusers versions, but suspect the team has/will.

If the team can trade for a ridiculous bounty, all for it. Mariota is, at best, a slightly better prospect than tebow. And tebow was average at best, as a pro QB.

  110. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Carolina, Seattle, and San Fran all have mobile QBs. Shameis isn’t mobile. So that doesn’t fit what Lovie said.

If you look back at previous drafts when you have 2 top QBs to choose from. There has usually been a “safe” QB and a “risky” QB. Whether its Luck v. RG3. Or Peyton v. Leaf or so on. Mariotta is clearly the “safer” pick of the two players. This is a no brainer IMO. Make the right choice L&L

  111. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Tom E.

The NFL coach I got to know best was Sam Wyche, but not like you from covering the Bucs. Before I got into sportscasting I was a morning air personality on a rock station in Greenville S.C.

Sam Wyche had retired from his playing days and since he was a star at Furman he opened a chain of sporting goods stores in Greenville. I got to know him when I did commercials for him on the radio. I saw him with the Bengals when I was in college. A great comeback win after the Chiefs grabbed the lead, they were better than the Bengals then and Greg Cook, who would have been a star if he hadn’t been injured was knocked out of the game. I recalled this memory to Wyche and he and I hit it off.

Took him skiing with our program director up at Beech Mountain in N.C. He ha never been before, we took him to the top of the hill and it took him an hour to get down the hill. LMAO

He dropped me a card once when he moved to San Francisco to work with Walsh. Then I never heard from him again until much later.

When I was doing sports in the Tri Cities of Tennessee his son played for Carson Newman I caught up with him there. I still have the picture of that last meeting.

Like Stram, Wyche was the exception. People here seem to dislike him but he did have a terrific sense of humor and lots of charisma in person.

But for every Wyche there is a Belicheat, for every Stram there is a Nick Saban.

  112. Eric Says:

    @lions

The case took that long because the victim did not want to press charges and refused to cooperate. Her attorney blocked any contact between her and the police until 11 months after the incident.

Because of her numerous inconsistent statements the officers correctly concluded there was no probable cause for an arrest or referral to SAO.

All entirely normal procedure. All in the police reports of you wish to read them.

  113. Luther Says:

I personally really like Wyche and have a lot of respect for him. He was a very innovative guy. It just didn’t work here for him but I really thought it was just a matter of time. He drafted well but in the end, people just got tired of him. Given time I think he could have built a winner.

  114. Mr. Patrick Says:

It is very unfair for posters on here to keep compating Winston to Josh Freeman because as far as I know

  115. Mr. Patrick Says:

It is very unfair for posters on here to keep comparing Winston to Josh Freeman because as far as I know, Josh was never accused of sexual assault or was caught shoplifting

  116. Mr. Patrick Says:

The Darth Vader black box strikes again, ugh

  117. BoltIsle Says:

Mr Patrick is right because Josh never accomplished anything on the field prior to being drafted where Winston and Mariota have.

  118. Luther Says:

I didn’t know Freeman even liked girls.

  119. White Tiger Says:

I’ve said all along – the type of offense we’re going to run will be predicated by the type of coaches we assemble.

I’ve also said the prevalence of the spread offense at the college level – in all of it’s variations – is so pronounced that even those mislabeled ‘pro-style’ are really just spread/west coast variations.

Value is determined by use, and the positions of QB in drop-back/play-action systems is no longer being supported by ANY major college program in the BCS (where most of the players in the NFL come from). It was driven by economics at the college level. The offense is simple in it’s approach, it can be adapted to the style of QB and the success of the system is achieved by learning and executing the system. The more flawless the execution, the better the team is…

Now, factor in that reasoning into the evolution of a defensive system that valued speed and pressure at the point of attack – by four down lineman fast linebackers that could fill on the run, or drop into coverage – and splitting the field into halves that allowed slightly slower, athletic cornerbacks a smaller area of the secondary to defend – and you’ve got the essence for the Tampa-2…in that same way, the Lovie wants to be the next team that utilizes a plethora of talent coming out of college, along with their college coaches, to effect the same type of revolutionizing success – this time on the offensive side of the ball…

The idea that Lovie spoke about and toyed around with during his year off of football – and bounced off of former/near OC Jeff Tedford is to deploy an offense built on heavy doses of spread-o elements.

There aren’t any drop back passers in college, because the spread is so easy to have success with – no college is going to refuse to run it. Their competitors ALL use it and are recruiting and winning championships with it. It leverages the more prevalent athletes and good-decision makers at the QB position.

These players get to the NFL where the goofy teams get stuck trying to force them into traditional QB roles. Some teams (like Seattle, San Francisco, and Carolina – to name a few) have found great success when they fully committed to the spread – AND got the BEST QB’s at running SPREAD-O offenses in college. These teams didn’t waste time trying to fit round pegs into square holes, they converted and found success with limited expense.

So lets summarize: there are more players familiar with the spread, most colleges run the spread, and the talent is easier to find – but you have better results by getting THE BEST players to fit the TYPE of spread-o system you decide to deploy (air raid, spread option, and pistol)…

Unfortunately, it does not indicate what the writer implies. From the article posted last week referencing Koetters “Four Verticals”:

“Despite what many are calling a “spread look” from the Erhardt-Perkins offense that Dirk Koetter runs, it’s often pro-style in that it does not attempt to simplify the read-system or present ways to change the two-man advantage the defense has in the running game, and it relies on the offensive linemen to sustain blocks longer.”

I’ve also been saying the offense Famous Jameis ran at FSU was a spread-o, just with more West Coast concepts (thereby making it “pro-style”, like the way Brad Johnson made Gruden’s WCO work as a non-mobile QB).

It’s actually beginning to look more like these personnel clues are pointing to the FACT Jameis ran a very similar offense at FSU.

It could be that the Buc’s are going to run a pure spread…but to me, it’s looking more like Famous Jameis is the right blend of of QB to run Koetter’s version of the spread-0 balanced with a good measure of WCO added in for good measure.

I’m still of the belief that Mariota’s the smarter/better choice for longterm success, but I think the forces are conspiring …Famous Jameis is very close to an ideal QB for Koetter’s system.

of course, it could also be that Koetter stays with MG8 and drafts Amari Cooper, too.

    It’s just not probable.

  120. Josh P Says:

What is this, 6 degrees to Marcus Mariota… Koetter knew a guy who coached a guy and Bajakian talked to a guy who played cards with a guy who had an RG3 jersey… Klatt is a moron…First of all when did anyone see Matt Ryan running the read option? ATL had 2 stout WR and a RB by committee approach(sound familiar). In 3 seasons under Koetter Ryan had 330 rushing yards and only 1 rushing TD.. sound like a coach who likes to run with his QB? and the bulk of his time in Jax David Garrard was the starting QB. People need to stop trying to connect the dots…we aren’t even through the pro days or event the combine and people want to start naming the #1 pick whether thats Mariota or JW..

  121. Josh P Says:

@Patrick and as far as we know JW hasn’t been popping Adderall and showing up late to meetings either.. and what are the statue of limitation for when you stop referring to someone as Alleged? People are alleged of things that are false all the time… Is it really so hard for you to think that just maybe he is innocent and that’s all there is to it..

  122. MadMax Says:

Thats right, its Mariota! So whatcha willing to pay to move up and get him Chip?

A trade will likely occur, and we’ll benefit the most.

  123. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

The Glazers don’t want to alienate the entire female fan base?

You people are OUT of your minds about this ALLEGATION!

Did it stop female FSU fans from going to FSU games?

Twist and turn all you want. My wife has already told me she’s all in on season tickets and jersey’s if his name gets called..

Then again she knows the difference between allegations and crimes. I’m sure most women do too.

There will be NO court room appearance for Jameis Winston regarding the civil suit. Me, I’m not a lawyer, but I don’t think he actually has to be in court for that. Especially it’s a case that I think will be thrown out of court.

If it does go to court and he wins his case, will you people finally SHUT UP about it? I mean that would 4 times people looked at the case and said there isn’t enough evidence.

  124. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Also you people that are soooo confident the Glazers won’t want him and continue to spew your foolish comments about rape allegations as the reason why need to pony up.

The wagers out there fellas. How confident are you?

  125. Barry Says:

Bucs will get a Kings ransom for Mariota. MG8 Gentleman is your QB of the future. Lovie said it already and Lovie doesn’t lie, right? Now, you can stand with your beloved Bucs and support Mike Glennon or you can go F&%k your self. Honestly I really don’t care.

  126. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Barry…Mike Glennon won’t be on the team next season, but I’ll still be a supporting Bucs fan.

  127. Dade City Ray Says:

I want to know what all the Johnny “flameout” Manziel lovers think the Bucs should do with the first pick. Winston or Mariota. Because I say whichever one they want the Bucs to draft, we should definitely go the other way.

  128. Barry Says:

  129. Luther Says:

I’ll be a supportive Buc’s fan but I’ll be calling for Lovie’s head if he screws this up. Winston is the pick. People should take the Mariota pinup off their walls because its clouding their judgment.

  130. Luther Says:

Just so you guys know, Mariota is injured and may not throw at the combine. He probably wasn’t going to throw anyway but now he has an excuse. This is what running QBs have to deal with.

  131. Nybucsfan Says:

Just so everyone know Winston won’t throw at the combine he will be out creeping. That’s what you have to deal with when you have a troubled QB and the babysitter takes the night off. Mariota said he may throw but we all know they aren’t going to they almost never do.

  132. Bucfan4life Says:

Lol at you guys thinking we will start running a spread offense in Tampa. Do you know how those systems succeed at the college level? Speed! This team has some talent at the skill positions but very little speed. They would have to overhaul their receivers, tight ends and running backs except for maybe Sims. So we are going to draft Mariota and give up on Evans, VJax, ASJ, and a couple running backs. On top of all that we have one of the most conservative head coaches in the history of the NFL and now he is going to be a trail blazer! No chance at any of this happening.

  133. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Bucfan4life…now you just stated my case for me as to why they will take Winston. This is the sole reason why I KNOW they will draft Winston.

Now no one will take my bet now…the cats out of the bag.

I didn’t want to have to tell anyone why I think they’ll take Jameis.

    Thanx a lot. LOL

  134. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Luther

If the Bucs pass on both QB’s, agreeing with you that Mariota won’t make it and that Jameis is just to big of a risk, or perhaps even worried about his pitching windup and the length of time it takes him to get rid of the ball, and the Bucs get a great deal for that #1 will you be upset.

How about this scenario. Koetter believes that he can squeeze ten wins out of MG8 and even if it’s one and done in the playoffs the Bucs are not near SB caliber yet. Perhaps they’ve even targeted someone like Connor Cook or Hackenburg.

And don’t forget Jeff Driskel will be available next year. OK that was for comic relief. Just thinking that the way Driskel SUCKED for the Gators he’d fit right in as a horrible Bucs QB.

@WhiteTiger As someone who enjoys reading the longer posts when they are well thought out, I appreciated your effort. Nice post!

  135. Luther Says:

Its like comparing a Filet (Mariota) to a Ribeye (Winston). Filet is popular with lots of people. Those who really know steak, know that the “Ribeyeis” the better cut even though it might be bad for you.

  136. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m all for drafting Winston instead of Mariota. As far as smoking pot, big freaking deal. Back in the days of attending games at Tampa stadium, my crowd always lit it up right there in the high seats. Now the gestapo has set in.

  137. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Luther
By your own logic, Winston would be the Rump Roast

  138. Josh P Says:

@StPete… stop with this pitching windup motion about JW…. have actually watched this kid throw a FOOTball? He does not have long wind up… once again just making stuff up as you go.

  139. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Josh P
Actually, Winston DOES have a too long deliberate wind-up. Not quite Leftwich long, but I’m sure whoever drafts him will try to quicken his release

  140. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    @ Josh P

JW has a baseball delivery. Everyone knows that except you. The common “acceptance” of a QBs throwing motion is this. Bring the ball to you ear and rip it. JW has that pitchers motion where the ball comes all the way back to the numbers on the back of his jersey. That is what we call a “windup motion” to quote you.

MM on the other hand has the prototypical delivery mechanics. His arm strength is right there with JW. JW has a lil more zip on his ball. But MM is not far behind. And MM is also right there with JW on his reads. You can say what you want about Oregon’s system. But the 1st option isn’t always open. MM easily goes through his progressions and either finds the open player. Or as a last resort will take off if its there. The kid has it and is a natural leader. Something JW is far from.

  141. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I would bet money that the majority of Shameis supporters also wanted Ryan Leaf over Peyton, Rivers over Eli, RG3 over Luck…blah blah blah. This sh1t is so stupid. Take the safe pick and enjoy the next decade!

  142. Luther Says:

FuNkYxMuNkEy Says: ” MM easily goes through his progressions and either finds the open player. Or as a last resort will take off if its there. The kid has it and is a natural leader. ”

I haven’t seen one scout that says that. They all say he must prove that he can do those things because he isn’t asked to do them in the Oregon system.

  143. Bucs fan 76 Says:

Winston is working out at camp in San Diego and plans to throw at the combine of course he could change his mind and not throw since Marcus is hurt and can’t throw.

  144. JSmalls Says:

Winston will throw because he’s a competitor and doesn’t turtle. He’ll leave no doubt after he throws dimes all over Lucas oil field.

  145. JSmalls Says:

How many 4th quarter deficits has Mariota dug his team out of?

  146. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    @ Luther

From ESPNs draft profile of Mariotta

Highly competitive and even-keeled player who rarely seems rattled on tape. Benefits from spread, uptempo attack that simplifies reads and creates bigger throwing windows. However, has been a very sound decision-maker throughout his first two years as a starter (63-to-10 TD-to-INT ratio). Still will occasionally take unnecessary risks at times with late throws he should not make. More decisive in 2013. Faster eyes scanning the field and showed a big improvement last year working the entire field while getting to his third and sometimes fourth option with more consistency than in 2012. Physically and mentally tough, and has shown the ‘over-my-dead-body’ mentality. Flashes the ability to bounce back from adversity (see fourth-quarter comeback against Oregon State in 2013 after two bad INTs earlier in the contest).

That’s even before this season when he progressed even more. They all say he hasn’t proved he can be a pocket QB. Just watch his tape with his eyes and body movement. He has all the tools and no off field issues. Zero

  147. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Rookie QBs rarely ever throw at the combine. They wait til their pro days so they can modify it to fit their player and ways to help him look the best he can be. Neither QB will throw at the combine this year.

  148. Luther Says:

@FuNkYxMuNkEy read what you wrote and read that scouting report again. I think you fluffed your writeup just a tad.

  149. lurker Says:

mariotta can’t take a hit…he is still hurting from the championship game…

    weak sauce

and funky, what kind of throwing motion does big ben have? and he has a few good years in the league, huh.

  150. Rays8jenningsfan Says:

    For all those people saying

“Matt Ryan didn’t run the Spread-Option in Atlanta…”

Not the Option, but they ran the spread. Just the “pass heavy, screen laden, four receivers on the field” Spread… which fits Mariota. Not to mention Koetter has worked with other QBs, and all the Bajakian prospects mentioned are all mobile guys… and Jameis Winston moves like a turtle. It favors Mariota.

  151. Josh P Says:

@Patrick actually if you watch his throwing motion the ball never drops below his waist line so no he doesn’t have a long motion.. You have zero idea what you’re talking about.

  152. Luther Says:

Here’s the thing that I find crazy. Why would anyone actually want a QB that MUST have a gimmicky offense to succeed? Seems to me that you would want a plug and play QB so no matter what happens, he can run your offense. Winston occasionally runs the spread option but his bread and butter is under center.

  153. Nybucsfan Says:

Luther and josh p you have no idea what your talking about. Has a baseball delivery check. almost exclusively plays out of the shotgun check. 75% of snaps he has taken are out of the gun. Josh search his throwing motion everyone of them will say he has a baseball delivery. Where do you guys come up with this stuff.

  154. Luther Says:

He plays out of the gun a lot but he drops back from the gun. He also goes under center. Not sure where you say we don’t know what we are talking about. Its his ability to setup in a pocket that separates him. Mariota is all about deception, screens and pops. He doesn’t set his feet properly and his feet don’t help him generate the zip that he should have. It’s funny how you Mariota guys don’t see the flaws that the scouts see. Winston does have flaws but they are MUCH less than Mariota. Don’t be surprised if he slips all the way to number 10 if the Jets don’t pick him.

  155. Nybucsfan Says:

Never said anything about Mariota. But Jameis has zero chance of going first if that film makes it to national TV. I have looked on a few other teams fan pages that need QB a lot of there fans hate jameis much like a lot of bucs fans. You do know the VP of the bucs is a woman right?

  156. danati74 Says:

    2 words. Crab legs.

  157. lurker Says:

why do you “hate” jameis winston?

    seems like a harsh word.

  158. White Tiger Says:

This, plus the earlier article on “Four Verticals” actually indicate the opposite.

I think Mariota is the better pick, but we’re installing an offense and an offensive line coach that is built to include elements of the spread (passing kind, NOT running kind), mixed with Jon Gruden’s type of ‘pro-style’ WCO (like Brad Johnson executed, very efficiently, all the way to the Superbowl)…

… which is the exact type of offense Famous Jameis ran at FSU.

I think we’re a bit thin at WR an RB…

  159. jbskiff Says:

    @ stpeatbuc

did you work for WQOK ? I believe it was 1440 am. What years in Grenville ?

  160. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

It is true that Winston does have some mechanical flaws. They are fixable though. The underneath coverage reading that both QBs have problem with will be more work. Hopefully he can fix his throwing motion, but Mariota has a short motion that he needs to extend just a tad. Again, all is fixable, it is just a matter of whether they do it or not.

  161. mark2001 Says:

So maybe trading Glennon might be an indicator that we are drafting Mariota, as it would tell us that we aren’t planning to have a pocket QB system? I guess people often see what they want to see.
