Fanatic Philly Trade-Up Fever Hits New Gear

January 20th, 2015

lovie and lichtSo the Eagles ran off their general manager and handed the checkbook at the keys to the cupboard to Chip Kelly a few weeks ago. Ever since, legitimate rumblings out of Philadelphia peg the Eagles as yearning to trade up with the Bucs.

Today, things got hotter.

Mark Eckel of NJ.com, (yes, much of South Jersey hates the in-state Giants and loves the Eagles) is quoting an Eagles “source” claiming Philadelphia will stop at nothing to trade up to draft Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. So Mariota can be a plug-and-play stud in Kelly’s offense.

One can assume their target would making a deal with the Buccaneers for the No. 1 overall pick to guarantee their pick of Mariota. You can read all about it here.

The quote that most interested Joe was this one from the Eagles source.

“It’s probably going to take moving up twice to do it. There’s going to be some wheeling and dealing involved.”

Surely, any potential trade that could interest Tampa Bay would have to include players and draft picks. And the Eagles certainly have plenty of talent. Today’s nugget implies the Eagles are willing to off players in advance for draft picks that could entice the Bucs, or the Titans with the N0. 2 pick.

For example, the Bucs might have no interest in LeSean McCoy because their offensive line is swiss cheese. However, a team like the Raiders might part with their No. 4 overall pick in 2015 for a guy like McCoy as part of a package. That pick could be used to entice the Bucs.

Joe’s not advocating for the Bucs to trade their victory in the Chase for Jameis, but it would be foolish to not listen to what generous offer Philly might put on the table.

If the Bucs could land an avalanche of picks PLUS Winston, then whoop-dee-doo!

  2. rick ross Says:

No brainer if we can get a slew of picks to only move down 3 spots

  3. Luther Says:

As long as Winston comes to the Bucs, I don’t care. If we miss out on Winston from this tomfoolery then no way. We need a QB in the worst way.

  4. SteveK Says:

Layne Johnson+ Connor Barwin+ 3 first round picks and this year’s 2nd and 3rd rounders.

  5. DallasBuc Says:

If they sold the farm to acquire the #2 pick from the Titans I wouldn’t mind trading back to 2 for a small fee to be guaranteed Winston. Everybody wins.

  6. Supersam Says:

I actually think a trade makes the most sense for our Bucs, this team is more than a quarterback away from doing anything at all. We could get a massive amount of players not only starters but also depth. And still pick up Hundley in the second round, been hearing that the Bucs like him a lot.

  7. bucrightoff Says:

Fletcher Cox, Jason Kelce, swap firsts this year, Bucs get a 2nd this year and a 2016 first round pick. Eagles will probably never do it, but go big if you can.

  8. Supersam Says:

And for you people who have a hard on for pro style offenses, Hundley ran a pro style offense at UCLA under Mora.

  9. Robert 9 Says:

if MM is that good, and a guy like Chip kelly wants him……well L & L may want to take notice.

I’m all for getting more picks, but I value Kelly’s evaluation ten fold vs. L & L.

If MG is the plan, and I have no problem with that, then do the deal and stockpile picks. but if its not MG then don’t be stupid and take a QB.

MG should bring a 2nd, 3rd at worst….either way. WTF is mcclown still doing on payroll? he has zero value with the old offense, even less with a new one. unless you want to teach the qb how to lose and look like a boy band singer.

  10. Macabee Says:

It is becoming common knowledge that Chip Kelly is planning a move up to get Mariota (see PFT article). The price to move up will be on the order of the 2011 Atlanta Falcons Julio Jones trade. This has the makings of a 3 way trade between the Bucs, Titans, and Eagles that is a win/win for all parties.

The Titans have said that they will not draft a QB this year and instead will draft a defensive player. The Bucs should trade down with the Titans for a 2nd round pick. The Bucks would trade that 2nd round pick to the Eagles for Nick Foles. The Eagles would trade that 2nd round pick back to the Titans along with a 1st, 4th, and a 2016 1st to move up from 20th making an offer comparable to the Falcons 2011 trade for Julio Jones.

The Bucs would then take Winston with the second pick and have a pretty good bridge QB to allow Winston time to get ready. The Titans would retain their high 2nd round pick plus 3 additional picks at their disposal and Chip Kelley would have his man. Everybody is happy!

Make it happen Jason Licht before draft day!

  11. foghead407 Says:

Ehat is it with hundley. He doesnt look like a good qb at all

  12. mark2001 Says:

Agree 100% Joe. Listening doesn’t cost anything.

  13. bucsfan1979 Says:

What a joke. chip kelly is a joke _UCk him. Now he thinks he owns the Not For Long League (NFL). WOW!!!!!!!!!

  14. Justin Says:

Throw in Lane Johnson to help out with the O-line

  15. Robert 9 Says:

all that trading macabee for a high priced QB with questionable upside and a criminal.

    no thanks

  16. bucs4lyfe Says:

man what a joke lol the eagles sound so desperate how pathetic…..guess what Chip Kelly nick foles did a great job for you, you think this rookie is going to take you to the promise land, has someone dubbed him the next Andrew luck? it’s simple DO SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DEFENSE MAYBE YOU CAN WIN MORE GAMES

  17. Robert 9 Says:

the travesty will continue when they trade MG, pick winston.

MG starts for another team and makes the playoffs and winston gets arrested or suspended and we go 2-14 again if we’re lucky.

thats what i think L & L will come up with. we should name them LOL

  18. tiny tim Says:

Too funny. If the eagles trade up to number 4 as this article suggest, then how much ammunition would they have left over to trade up with the bucs? Its going to cost a lot to move up from 20 to 4. Do you think they would have enough to trade up to one after that? Can’t see that happening.

  19. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

If they score Winston AND picks?!? Yes, please.

  20. BUCSFAN68 Says:

the travesty will continue when they trade MG, pick winston.

MG starts for another team and makes the playoffs and winston gets arrested or suspended and we go 2-14 again if we’re lucky.

thats what i think L & L will come up with. we should name them LOL
    ______________________________________________________________
Winston has never been arrested. MG is not a franchise QB. He is a barely halfway decent backup.

  21. BUCSFAN68 Says:

The Bucs need to stand pat and draft a QB with the 1st pick

  22. Mike10 Says:

Smartest thing to do is to shut up if you’re the Bucs. Play this two QB decision out for the next 4 months, saying nothing but we like both prospects a lot! Hell pay Kiper and all those make shift fortune tellers to take turns mocking us taking one or the other! But for once in our GM history, play up your leverage and maximize your return for a chance to turn this mess of a franchise around

  23. theodore Says:

Teams aren’t going to trade their #1 pick for a RB. Especially the #4 overall pick. Not even a team as dumb as the Raiders.

Joe – Not sure what league you follow.

  24. Luther Says:

I watch several games with Hundley…no thanks…he’s no where near the QB Winston or Mariota are. People need to watch the games with these guys and not just go with what’s popular. Glennon is way better and that is not a stretch.

  25. Nick2 Says:

We need to walk away from this deal and just take Winston and be done. The Eagles don’t want him but I see no way that we get a slew of pics and become a whole lot better. A quarterback is an immediate impact. Look at what the Seminoles were before Winston? How much better are the Rams after the slew of picks they got for RGIII???? Exactly take the QB and dont mess it up!!!!!!!! This opportunity happens once every 20 years if your lucky.

  26. StPeteBucsFan Says:

What if the Titans are involved and they get our #1 and give it to Philly to presumably take MM.

If we’re still at #2 and can get “Famous” any additional picks would just be gravy right?

Whatever we’d be stupid not to listen to all deals. Jameis Winston is NOT the only QB who can play football. He MAY be the best of THIS year’s draft. Last year Joe was pimping for Johnny Football and Teddy Bridgewater. QBs the level of Johnny Football and Bridgewater are available in EVERY draft.

  27. Robert 9 Says:

once every twenty years do you get the chance to draft a criminal. classic.

  28. MTM Says:

L&L are in a great position with this draft. If they some how manage to screw it up. It will be epic and cost them their jobs!!

  29. Luther Says:

This year’s crop of QB’s is a lot slimmer than last year. You had Bortles, Carr, Garoppolo and Bridgewater. This year you have Winston and Mariota. After that, I wouldn’t take a QB before the middle of the 3rd round.

  30. Robert 9 Says:

you take the guy with less risk even if he has a little less potential.

thats how the rich get richer and the suckers get taken….all day long son.

  31. Cascade Says:

It is essential that the Bucs provide a flow of disinformation on their intentions. That is, if Kelly really wants Mariota, the Bucs can’t tip their hand in favor of Winston. It would also be helpful to seed some rumors that they’re down on Winston and in love with Mariota…

Unfortunately, it does not seem to be a strong year for QBs outside of the top 2.

  32. bucco brice Says:

trade, trade, trade…the cowboys built a dynasty with one big trade, steelers with one super draft…gather draft picks and build our own dynasty 🙂 …AND, find some gems in the lower rounds…only solid starting players we’ve drafted from rounds 3 on since the super bowl win are mike williams and tanard jackson…and a Bucs career ended badly for both…unreal how poor the drafting has been 🙁

  33. bucrightoff Says:

The Rams are miles better than they would have been had they drafted RGBust. In fact they’d be what the Redskins are right now, a complete catastrophe. The Rams got like 7 starters out of that trade when factoring all the trades of the picks they got. We should be so lucky to get that kind of package.

  34. Robert 9 Says:

they will screw it up MTM.

look what they did last year.

  35. bucco brice Says:

and….the Bucs have to play the Mariota card all the way to draft day…let everyone think they want him bad, and then flick the switch to Philly 🙂

  36. Waterboy Says:

    @Nick2

Good point! The Rams are still bad even with all those draft picks.

  37. JC De La Torre Says:

BucRightOff is right. I mean, look how many times the Rams have been to the playoffs since trading away that pick! Oh wait…

  38. rayjay1122 Says:

This is my take, if we want Winston and the Eagles want Mariota, then we make everyone believe with some poker faces that we really want Mariota and plan on picking him. That way the Eagles have to give us basically whatever we want in terms of players and draft picks to make it happen. I mean 19 spots is a big jump and will cost them dearly to our benefit. If we want Winston then we need a bridge gap QB who fits into the system Winston would be running. Is Foles QB style the same as an offense that Winston would take over or more similar to Mariota’s style. I think if we take Winston that Glennon probably is the best choice to bridge the gap for maybe the 1st half of the season. Either way this can only benefit the Bucs.

  39. Buccfan37 Says:

More is better all day long. Increases the chance of success.

  40. Architek Says:

Oh it would take the farm to move if I were Tampa.

Screw all you bucs haters. Go suck one.

  42. DallasBuc Says:

There is The Kevin again reflexively inane name calling with others he disagrees with on a sports site. The irony is sweet!

  43. "TheKevin" Says:

    @everyone

I’m sick of all you haters. If that’s all you are gonna do then why be a bucs fan?

Go be a fan of another team losers.

    Misery loves company.

Worst fan base in the league. I’ve never seen more haters that claim to be a fan.

    Go suck one!!!

  45. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    Nick 2…I fully concur.

  46. rayjay1122 Says:

I think any sane individuals can understand why some people are negative on the Bucs. 30-70 over the last 100 games does not foster a glass half full response. I get negative sometimes too and love the Bucs. I will never jump ship.

  47. "TheKevin" Says:

    @dallasbuc

How can someone be a fan that just hates on everything?

That wasn’t even an opinion he stated. Just a bunch of dribble.

“They will screw it up” blah blah blah.

You call him a fan? A fan of a team doesn’t bank on them screwing things up. And that’s what he wants.

And when the bucs turn things around all you haters will be climbing onboard.

    Bunch of haters

  48. "TheKevin" Says:

    @rayjay

So just hate on everything and anything right?

He also said they screwed up last years draft which shows how stupid he is.

    3 starters isn’t a total failure you f n morons.

Yea they could have made a couple better picks but to say last years draft was a screw up then you need to stop watching football. No team hits on all their draft picks you f n tool.

    ______________________________________________________________

If we played the Rams with even QBs and everything else on the rosters the same as currently constructed, the Rams would beat us by 4TDs at least. They also play in the toughest division in football and could easily have won 9 games this year with Shaun Hill/Austin Davis. They are so far ahead of us it’s not even funny. So yeah, if we draft a QB at 1, the Rams will still be FAR ahead of us.

  51. DallasBuc Says:

The Kevin- your childish tantrums calling people “idiot” and “hater” with every post is most amusing. Please don’t stop because it brings a sense of levity to the beaten dead horse of a QB debate.

  52. bucrightoff Says:

And LOL at every 20 years. There’s at least a 25% chance we’re picking number 1 again next year. I can’t actually believe people think this resembles anything close to a good team. 12 losses or more 3 of the last 4 years strongly suggests otherwise.

  53. tiny tim Says:

    @rayjay

I am not sure I understand your point. You say trade with Philly and use Foles as a bridge until Winston is ready. How are we going to get Winston if we trade with Philly who has the 20th pick. Are you going to trade with Philly then hope Winston drops to 20? Help me understand your logic. BTW….Barring injury, Glennon will not see the field if Winston is drafted.

  58. Pickgrin Says:

Of course you listen to offers – but any scenario that does not guarantee you get Winston is a no go.

Now all we need is for JAWS to buy in. And the PhillyMobb will be in full frenzy..lol

  69. Buc-O's 82 Says:

It’s going to see how much they would offer to get Mariota, it would have to be one heck of a package of players and picks and to be able to stay within the top 2 or 3.

  70. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    Pat Yasinkas – ESPN

TAMPA, Fla. — Word has been trickling out via various media in recent days that the Buccaneers are higher on Jameis Winston than they are on Marcus Mariota.

That shouldn’t come as any big surprise as long as we’re just talking about the football aspect. Of the two quarterbacks expected to go early in the draft, Winston obviously is the more ready of the two to play in the NFL.

  71. Robert 9 Says:

c’mon kev, stop the justin bieber videos and start typing!

  72. BirdDoggers Says:

It’s all talk at this point, but if a massive trade were on the table, the Bucs have to seriously consider. It’s all talk at this point and even with a “source”, it’s likely that Kelly wouldn’t come close to showing his real hand. It’s all smokescreens and “reports” at this point.

If the Bucs are torn between the two QBs, it’s possible to trade down and still get one of them. Although they wouldn’t be able to move down too far and the Titans should be in the market for a QB too. The Bucs could still move down and get the D-lineman from USC or even be in a position for Winston, with additional picks to boot.

  73. rayjay1122 Says:

Most the people on here just hate anything and everything the bucs do.

Real fans are tired of all the negativity. And watch no matter who the bucs pick these haters will blast off.

That’s ok though when they turn things around don’t be trying to get back on board. Your seat will be taken by someone who is a fan. Not just a hater.

  75. "TheKevin" Says:

  76. Luther Says:

Tenn has a QB so a trade with Philly works for them. We don’t have one and so, it’s not worth it to trade down. It’s really not that hard. If you don’t have a QB these days, you have NO chance.

  77. Luther Says:

Wow Joe…a big black box with an X comes up on my screen on my cell and PC. It only happens on this site. I’m an experience IT guy not a newbie so I know its your site. I don’t usually complain but man that is annoying.

But there is another kind of fan that hopes for the best, but has seen enough football to know this team has a lot of work to do to escape mediocrity. And that is most of the fans on this board. Sorry man.

Kevin…been there done that and I agree.

  88. Celly Says:

    You guys really are dull…

When you have the #1 pick, you take the player that is rated the highest on your draft board.

    POINT. BLANK. PERIOD.

You don’t play around with that pick.

To the person that suggested we “trade the pick with the Titans”, today is when you make the decision: Either you stop watching football or stop playing Madden. Why would the Titans give up a draft pick to move up one spot (not to jump anybody) when they can get the guy they want at #2.

I have a question for everyone:

If Tampa trades away the pick and the guy you wanted them to pick is not there, what is going to be the reason of your blame? Because I guarantee everyone on here saying trade the pick will be upset and blame Lovie and Licht for not “properly” improving the team.

  89. Stu Laake Says:

Sounds like the smoke is a little thick coming out of Jersey…the irony would be if it is true, Eagles moving up for a QB, Jameis as the target.

  90. Celly Says:

There are 2 types of franchises in the NFL:

Those that have a “franchise” QB and those that are still looking for one.

  91. mark2001 Says:

Celly…you listen…doesn’t cost anything…and maybe someone will make you an offer too good to refuse. And if they don’t, you still have the pick in your pocket. There are no sure things. And how would you feel if you passed on more than a handful of top three picks over the next few years and the guy you picked ended up in prison…or was a bust….who know what crimes Marcus might be up to, even this very minute….

  92. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    Stu Laake…that would never happen.

Don’t you listen to everyone on here that say Winston is not worthy of being picked number 1? Even when most analysts and former players say different.

    Come on, man.

  93. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

It’s really simple for us FSU-Buc fans.

Draft Winston and we buy season tickets.

Draft Mariota and we watch from our couch.

Trade down and we watch from our couch.

  94. Luther Says:

Stop it Celly…you are making too much sense. I can’t take it anymore 🙂

  95. Todd Kiper Says:

Is the front office in Philly trying to get fired? Why would you trade away so much for a guy who’s going to be available at 20 anyway?

  96. Luther Says:

I don’t think he will be available at 20 but I certainly see him being there at 6 and maybe available at 9.

  97. rayjay1122 Says:

Are FSU Bucs fans going to buy season tickets and watch Winston hold a clipboard or I guess these days a tablet? Does anyone honestly think he would start from day one? I guess anything is possible, like Kevin being nice to people who do not think like him. Until free agency comes and goes, all of this draft debate is futile. What we address in free agency will have some impact on the draft board.

  98. rayjay1122 Says:

Regardless of what we do in free agency, I do think we have to draft a QB 1st. It may just give some clues as to who that QB will be.

  99. sunshineben Says:

Why doe anyone want the thief Winston? Even with all the money he will get in the nfl he may not be able to pay off all the women .Besides, MM will be the better qb in year 2

  100. Luther Says:

The only worthwhile QB in free agency is Hoyer and he can barely beat out Johnny Playground. The rest are overpriced and terrible/old

  101. Luther Says:

We need a Ouija Board to project what Mariota will be because there is not enough on tape.

  102. armchairGM Says:

Why should we give up our pick I understand people want to get more pieces but after all the rams got they still have not made the playoffs. Why are we continuing to help teams like the Patriots build while poaching off of us, now we are going help another NFC team poach off of us and get their supposed missing piece? NO

  103. Todd Kiper Says:

    sunshineben: Outstanding insight and analysis

  104. armchairGM Says:

Philly should have tanked their season if they wanted the kid that bad. Fans had no where near the heartache and pain we felt for 17 weeks this year for us to just let them take over the spot that we suffered to get.

Are you kidding me? They were 9-3 on their way to the playoffs and then missed. I’m sorry, but they suffered WAAAAAY more heartache than we did. Our season was over after 3 weeks, if anything we were spared a lot of heartache of a close season. We were planning draft in September. That’s not heart aching, it’s depressing.

Its funny that the fools rarely respond to voices of reason and sensibility.

  110. SuperSam Says:

Just finished watching the game film on Winston vs Florida on draftbreakdown.com. And let me just say this, Winston looked AWFUL against a weak Florida defense. He forces to many throws, throwing motion is elongated, throws off his backfoot to many times when hes under pressure This kid is overrated big time. See for yourself. http://draftbreakdown.com/video/jameis-winston-vs-florida-2014/

  111. rayjay1122 Says:

Bottom line is that every draft has some major surprises and I doubt this year will be any different. I am just glad we did not have the 1st pick last year and have to take Clowney. I am so glad we took Evans. This year we do hold the 1st pick and there is not a clear cut consensus #1 pick like last year, so it is going to be fun.

  112. Tackleblockwin Says:

If I were Chip Kelly and I wanted Mariota I would trade myself to Tampa for their 7th rounder and then use the #1 pick…

  116. Tackleblockwin Says:

In all honesty, if the Bucs trade back and accumulate tons of picks….how confident are we that with those picks we actually strike gold on more than 1 player? That is what scares me most. I love the idea, but the reality of it all would surely scare me on draft day.

  117. Tom Says:

Super Sam: not sure I should even justify your comment with a response because calling Florida a weak defense disqualifies you from a reasonable discussion. You conveniently chose the worst game of his career. He was playing injured and had the COC hearing weighing on him.

Go watch the other games. Tell me who, besides a handful already playing in the NFL, has his ability to throw receivers open, anticipate throws, read complex coverages and make all the throws?….be honest now

  118. ADown88 Says:

Yeah, saying “weak Florida defense” loses you all credibility. Also, people have bad games, even the greatest players do.

    @macabee

So Titans aren’t drafting a QB but they should give us a 2 this year to move up a spot? How does that make any sense? Why not wait and see what Dallas to them?

This draft speculation becomes so funny and this year so early for God’s sake. No know from 20 has ever moved up to 1 ever. Remember what Atlanta did to move up to get the 2nd SEC receiver in the draft at 5? The Bucs could seriously land like 3 starters and 5 high picks. Philly is not doing that. Since he’s “so not pro ready” why would you draft a guy that Joe finds articles that he will fall to late 1st or 2nd?

  124. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

  131. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Giants fans hate on their team worse as well. Anyone who thinks we’re hateful on this site should spend an hour or two reading comments on some of the Northern “rust belt” team’s fans sites just for sh!ts and giggles. We’re actually a bit tame here.

With that said if Kelly wants to move up and you’re the Glazers you absolutely take that phone call and proceed to bend him over every bit as hard as he did to the Bucs when he accepted the Bucs HC job only to bail in the 11th hour. Much as I’d like to see the Bucs draft Leonard Williams (and roll with Glennon) I’d be ecstatic to land another team’s 1st round picks along with possible 2nd and or 3rd round picks for the next three years. Doubt it happens now that GM’s have seen how the RGIII deal played out for Washington.

You can’t be serious. #15 defense is in the 89th percentile of teams. If they were in the 89th percentile in the NFL they would be a top 4 defense. Also, Florida plays some solid offenses in the SEC which can raise their stats, as well as having a terrible offense which puts their D in unmanageable positions.

  140. tiny tim Says:

    @SuperSam

You are exactly making all of the Winston backer’s point. First of all, lets just say there are no Florida defensive guys in the NFL or they were not good enough to make it in the NFL, it does not mean they were not a good “college” defensive team. That’s what you get with Mariotta. He is a good “college” qb and what he ran at Oregon has no bearing in the NFL. You can’t throw 30 bubble screes a game in the NFL.

And yea, you saying that a 15 ranked defense out of 120 D1 schools is an example of you making stuff up. Saying that there are no defensive players from Florida doing well in the NFL is making stuff up. So again, your credibility is toast my friend. And thank you, I will stop and pick up some crab legs for dinner tonight.

Not sure why Jameis running out on the field with his jersey on is a red flag. But that what Jameis bashers do. They make a mountain out of a molehill. Not once did you mention how the back up qb said after the game he credits Jameis for getting him ready to play because he stayed up with me until 2am everyday going over film. Did you mention how the players said at halftime of that game Winston got up in front of the team and gave a passionate speech about how “we” are not playing like the number 1 team. I see you also forgot to mention that while on the sidelines, WInston was still motivating his teammates to a win. You see red flags but I see other things.

    ______________________________________________________

No offense, and nothing personal, but this is one of the dumbest posts this site has ever seen. The Redskins got a bust, all told with everything that came from the Skins, the Rams got 6 starters out of the trade. It’s universally agreed this is one of the worst trades ever for Washington. And Washington’s QB situation is arguably worse now than St. Louis’s is. The only people who think Washintong won that trade are mental ward patients and the most delusional of people trying to make a point.

  150. Dave Pear Says:

    @Barry,
It’s kind of funny that in your mind Rodney King is a “Great” man, but Jameis is a low life thug.
You should also read the Abraham Lincoln quote.

  151. tiny tim Says:

So if Coach Kelly wants him then hey the bucs should draft him!!! That makes about as much sense as Steve Spurrier getting the gig with the redskins and quickly going out to sign Danny Wuerffel, Reidel Anthony and Jaques Green. How did that work out for SPurrier? Just because someone is familiar with a player or prefers said player, it does not mean its the best pick for the bucs. I seem to remember Pete Carroll passing on his former college player from USC in the draft when everybody thought he would pick him. Carroll is smart enough to know what works in college just may not translate.

  152. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @bucrightoff
Agree 100%. With the #1 pick you take the highest rated player on your board and Leonard Williams seems to be the consensus best player in the draft. He will look great next to GMC to give the Bucs a feared and dominant D-Line

  153. []_[]Buc Says:

Not happening, not with us by the way.

  154. []_[]Buc Says:

Or rather not with us anyway.

  155. jfat Says:

Another reason to take Mariota. It would be nice to get even with Chip for leaving us at the altar. Who the hell goes by Chip anyway?

  156. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @bucrightoff

Agree about how St. Louis TOTALLY got the better of the deal with the foreskins.

And again…STOP with the St. Louis nonsense. They freaking used the #1 draft pick on a QB just a few years back. Since Bradford got hurt nobody can say for sure what he MIGHT have been. But it’s clear what he isn’t…a franchise QB even though he was taken with the #1 pick in the draft.

This is why one of the great NFL GM’s of all time Bobby Beathard was known as the king of the trade down. If you can multiply your draft picks you’re almost stupid not to, especially if we’re talking really good picks like St. Louis got.

Jameis or Marcus could be great they could be busts and they could also get hurt like Bradford.

Joe was pimping for Johnny Flash in the pan and Bridgewater last year. We had to have them or else! There are QBs the quality of Johnny Flash and Bridgewater EVERY YEAR! Hundley and Petty are both legitimate prospects.
I’m not saying they LOOK as good as Jameis or Marcus YET…but they also don’t demand a 1st pick in the draft.

If we can multiply that first into another first and a second we’d have to at least consider.

Jameis slings the ball ala Leftwich…he’s already looking a little pudgy ala Leftwich. And I’m one who believes that Leftwich could have reached the SB with the right team. My point is that Jameis is not all that!!!

BTW just looked at the Walter Football Mock and they have FOUR FSU players besides Jameis going in the first round. He was freaking surrounded by talent!!!!

Know how many Ducks are going in the first round besides Mariota. ZERO!

  157. BirdDoggers Says:

The Rams made the trade with Washington while having Bradford on the roster. Unfortunately for them he’s always hurt, but he was their #1 overall pick. It’s a good example of the draft being a crapshoot. The first overall pick doesn’t guarantee anything. The Rams took the extra picks from Washington and turned them into a core group of players to build off of. For all we know, Glennon could be a better option than Bradford is for the Rams. Adding multiple picks by trading down could produce similar results with one exception. The Rams had their QB and didn’t spend one of their many extra picks on another QB. The Bucs could use one of the extra picks on a QB and might have just as good of a chance landing a quality starter as taking MM or Winston, which no one seems to have a consensus on. They would have all the extra picks to boot.

  158. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @jfat
    I like that and agree

  159. DB55 Says:

    100 days and counting.

  160. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Again echoing why Bobby Beathard was a smart NFL GM

Walter Football ran an analysis of 1st round draft picks and the winners and the busts. The last ten year period they used was from 1998-2007 because it takes a few years to really determine the successes from the bust. Patience Buc fans with ASF and Sims! And some would say MG8 (just threw that in to get some spitting at their keyboards LOL)

That ten year average 54% success 46% failure. Basically a 50-50 crap shoot!

The ratio for 2nd rounders. Not much worse it was exactly 50-50.

Just some numbers to absorb for the we MUST pick a QB with the #1 pick.

  161. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ StPete
All great points and I agree 100%

  162. biggun Says:

When you can cherry pick the draft with other teams picks YOU DO IT, JUST TRADE BABY!

  163. StPeteBucsFan Says:

  164. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

The pick WILL be Winston. I promise you all this. Pound on the keyboard for the next 3 months. Whine and moan about how much you don’t like him another 1000 more times and the pick will still be Winston.

    That is all for tonight.

Come back tomorrow, but bring cheese next time to go with all the whine.

  165. mac Says:

Just because some sport radio host is spouting of about Chip Kelley wanting to make this trade does not mean a hole lot… And I don’t trust what anyone says this time of the year…

I believe we will keep the first pick and choose the best QB in the draft… We need a franchise QB and there is only one way to find one…

  166. StPeteBucsFan Says:

While I dislike Tom Brady, whiny crybaby, he has scoreboard and so I give him all the props. If someone wants to say he’s the greatest ever…perhaps he isn’t finished yet.

Having said that he’s NOT the sole reason for the Patriots success. I also dislike Belicheat but again you have to give him scoreboard especially as a defensive whiz.

Robert Kraft may be the best owner in the NFL. The Rooneys have been great.
and that’s why the Steelers are consistently good.

My point is that football is a freaking team sport and not just on the field. The winning teams generally have great ownership and management as well as great coaching.

Exhibit A THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS. Yes Russell Wilson is great. But so is Pete Carroll and their great defense and they have the wealthiest owner in the NFL co founder of Microsoft Paul Allen. Think he might know something about management.

OTOH We’ve suffered through the WORST owner in Culverhouse, and distracted (Man U deal) owners in the Glazers. We suck from the top down.
We need a LOT more than just a QB.

  167. Eastsidebuc Says:

@Stpetebuc that’s cool and all about Jameis being surrounded by talent. But what does it say about the talent level Marcus played with and against? To me it means he played with and against mediocre talent and dominated, what happens when he plays with and against great talent? Jameis has played with and against NFL caliber players already. AND he went to high school and college in the south we can flat out play football down here bruh. A long way from grass skirts and umbrella drinks.

  168. Owlykat Says:

The Eagles thwarted us from getting to the Super Bowl for years. We would be fools to help them get Marriota and then block us from the Super Bowl for the next decade. Look at the Final Four this year in the NFL–they all have Franchise QBs. Mariota has all the tools to be a bigger version of Seattle’s QB.
Take Mariota and build up our OL and we will be in HIGH COTTON!!! We have to use this first pick for a Franchise QB.

  169. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I think we can all agree that QB is absolutely the most important position on a football team.

Where we disagree is that it’s the ONLY position.

We agree that a majority of NFL QB’s were taken in the first round,

Where we disagree is that it’s the ONLY way to find a QB.

Where we agree is that Jameis and Marcus are the two best “prospects”.

Where we disagree is that they are the ONLY prospects in this draft.

Where we agree is that posters here have plenty of different opinions.

Where we disagree is that any poster knows for certain.

Posting opinion as fact is just silly. Nobody, probably including L&L know who that first pick will be.

But it’s fun so keep rocking the opinions and I hold back on the adhom. The ONLY opinion I’ve read that just seems absurd is that Aaron Rodgers is not all that good and since MM has been compared to him he must not be good either.

  170. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Owlykat

“Look at the Final Four this year in the NFL–they all have Franchise QBs.”

And yet the SB will be contested by a 6th round draft pick against a 3rd round pick.

Not sure I follow your point?

  171. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    EastsideBuc

As far as the talent Mariota played against…we could start with that team that is projected to have FIVE first round NFL picks.

As I recall he did pretty well against that competition.

2 of the projected top ten picks and 3 of the top 12 picks played against Mariota.

The BPA is widely considered to be Williams from SoCal.

The Pac Ten is as good as the ACC. 2 of the top ten teams in the final rankings were from the PAC 10

Marcus faced competition just as good as Jameis.

  172. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

  177. iamkingsu Says:

    Luck: 26 TDs, 19 INTs

Rodgers: 32 TDs, 13 INTs (But this was his 4th year, 1st as starter)

Wilson: 32 TDs, 12 INTs ( or 30 TDs, 11 INTs: if you count the playoffs)

    Brady: 31 TDs, 18 INTs

Everyone wants to predict how a college quarterback’s success, wins, comebacks, Heisman trophies, etc. will translate to success in the NFL.
Why not just look at how they have performed in the NFL.

A certain backup QB on a terrible team: 29 TDs, 15 INTs (18.5 games)
Hint: His first name is Mike, and he wears #8.

Please look up the performance of your favorite QB in the first 19 games of their career, and let us all know how they compare.

Does anyone remember my offer of a bet re: the performance of last years’ surefire NFL stars? Surprisingly, not one person was even tempted to take me up on that friendly wager. Just look at all that easy money you missed, betting on a sure thing!

The Patriots offense is based on what then? They tell you the play at the line if scrimmage? Horrible, horrible argument.

  181. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

This is the most speculation I have ever seen. But if we could somehow fall back to #4, get Foles, and another 2nd and possibly their 1st next season as well. Hell yes please and may I have another. We would have our QB that we have desperately needed. Could still have a chance at either Williams, Gregory, Ray, Scherff, or Cooper. And have the extra picks to help out later on. The extra 2nd this year would be huge. Mainly as trade bait, but a pick around 50 would still give us a great shot at getting a great player. This would be my dream scenario.

If they give up Shady to get to 4. They would have zero need for Foles if they move up to #1 for Mariotta. That is a ton to give up but if Kelly feels MM is the man to get them over the top then its worth it. Please L&L get this ish right for a change!!!

  182. BucIt941 Says:

If they could make it to 4 and throw in Maclin along with some draft picks I wouldn’t be against moving to 4. There is still a chance you can nab one of the 2 QB’s or trade Vincent Jackson for a pick that can be used to move back up a slot. Just hope Tenn. goes with anything other than QB!

  183. cmurda Says:

There’s only 1 way that Chip Jelly gets to get his rocks off and be guaranteed Mariota. He’s gotta go through Tampa. I would beat the ever lovin crap out of him via talent and draft picks before he’s allowed to pass go. Something magical like Joe’s little shake n bake would be Disneyesque. No brainer. Plus moving to the #4 pick could still mean Famous is available. Jags and Raiders won’t go QB and I’m not so sure Tenn doesn’t give Mettenberger 1 more year. I have been on record and if not, record this now. I want us to get a sweet coup and trade down but if said coup doesn’t end up existing then it’s definitely Famous at #1 for me.
