Cowboys Expect Marinelli To Stay

January 13th, 2015
Cowboys seem to think DC Rod Marinelli is staying put.

The Cowboys seem to think Rod Marinelli is staying put.

Joe couldn’t believe it. There was finally a respite for Bucs fans screaming at each other whether to draft Jameis Winston at the end of April or not.

And the subject that stopped the turmoil was about a coach with the Dallass Cowboys, of all people.

Whispers have swirled for months that former Bucs defensive line coach Rod Marinelli wouldn’t be able to move to Tampa quick enough to work for his old friend Lovie Smith, if the Cowboys don’t re-sign him.

Though Lovie adamantly shot down the rumor Sunday, and team sources offered Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune a curious “no comment” comment, it seems, per a high-ranking Cowboys official, Marinelli isn’t escaping Dallas any time soon. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, otherwise known as “Son of Jerrah,” hinted rumors of Marinelli coming to the Bucs are just that, per the Dallas Morning News.

Jones also said he is already working on contracts to retain coaches and said he fully expects defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli to return.

Todd Archer of BSPN Dallas also seems suspicious of the rumors of Marinelli running to Tampa.

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is out of a contract, and there are constant queries about him rejoining Lovie Smith with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, although that seems to be more about people trying to connect the dots rather than some sort of predetermined puzzle.

As Joe wrote yesterday, just looking at this objectively, it doesn’t make sense for Marinelli to bolt the Cowboys. They are a playoff team and Marinelli’s defense did so well, he likely will be getting a raise. And Jerry Jones can easily match whatever figure Team Glazer floats in Marinelli’s face.

Also, Marinelli’s good defense should improve next year. First, Stephen Jones vows to find a right defensive end (perhaps he would take ghostly Michael Johnson off the Bucs’ hands?) and stud middle linebacker Sean Lee returns from a season-ending injury.

With the Bucs, Marinelli may have little to no job security. If the Bucs have another garbage year next year, then who is to say Lovie returns in 2016? Joe wouldn’t wager on it.

Only thing that could make sense is that Marinelli is about to retire and wants to coach his final season(s) with his good friend Lovie, salary and job security be damned.

So many reports pro and con. He would be a great upgrade, and maybe Rod does not want to stay in Dallas, never know where the mans heart is. We will see soon.

  2. []_[]Buc Says:

Of course they want him to stay lol

I really don’t by the job security thing. Simply put if the Bucs nail the draft and start winning next year, winning consistently. Then Lovie’s seat will no longer be scorching hot and everyone will rest easy. I feel the Bucs job is very enticing even looking at it from the outside in. You have a number of up and coming stars, 2 already shining stars, and he get’s to work with his BFF. This Defense turned a corner throughout 2014 and is on the rise. Why not jump on board and help take it over the top?

He said he didn’t expect there was communication cause it would be tampering and he “expects” to sign him. There’s nothing more to it then that.

If rumors were false they would have just put an end to it and signed Rod already no? Instead there two days left and still Rod is not signed.

But hey, feel free to join the party of people acting as if Dallas can make Rod do anything lol. All they can so is throw money at him and the Glazers have plenty of that.

It’s amazing to me that folks just assume that we’re going to keep losing and keep being bad. The OC loss to illness thing was an anomaly, the defense doesn’t have the steep learning curve anymore and the front office has shown that it can draft decently well (jury is still out on the guys from day two) and find gems in free agency. The big money guys were busts but they regularly are on lots of teams and it was a necessary evil due to the woeful lack of talent we had. If the administration can keep finding solid draft picks and getting really solid contributors in free agency, that aren’t already big names, and build those guys from within then we’ll be a really good team soon. Maybe not this year, but we will start seeing the signs of it this year. It just bales me how everyone dismisses the effects that losing the OC had on the team and assumes that the play was due to bad players and Lovie being incompetent. Just ridiculous. Marinelli should have no worries about job security by coming to the Bucs. With an actual OC in place, a couple new quality draft picks, a few free agent contributors and the defense playing more comfortably in their roles from day 1, this will be a much, much improved team.

And Sean Lee has been injured how many times in a row now? The guy hardly see the field.

And an outsiders logic is hardly of significance between the relationship of two people who consider themselves brothers.

If a man sees his brother in trouble, the typical response to to go help him.

UNLESS Lovie doesn’t ask him, IMO as I have said since the day Jerry denied Rod the first time, he’ll come home.

I think it’s so funny people act as if Jerry can out money the Glazers. The Cowboys may be the most profitable team in America but Man U is the most profitable team in the world lol.

  9. BucBob1 Says:

What else do you expect them to say? His contract is up. He’s free to do what he wants. I still think he’s coming, and he may still harbor some ill will twords the Cowboys, for not letting him leave, and reunite with Lovie last season.

Looks like Marinelli is in a good spot. Team Jerry is going to match any offer that Marinelli gets from any other franchise. BTW, I thought the Pro Football Talk rumor was a bit of reach despite the fact that Mike Florio floated it though it was as Joe put a nice diversion from the ensuing Winston/Mriota/Trade down for Peat/Scherff/numerous draft picks debate…. PFW apparently does have a lot of time on its hands; it has already posted 2015 Super Bowl odds and believe it or not the Bucs were not at the bottom of the heap, but were pretty close @ 200-1:

  11. JC De La Torre Says:

I’m sure there’s a lot of JerryBucks being thrown his way. He and Lovie are like brothers and they love coaching together. Is Blood thicker than cashola?

He’s also 65, has a home here and maybe this could be his last run at the rodeo, too.

Its not hard to connect the dots. Not hard at all. In 7 days, he’ll be with the Bucs organization in some capacity.

The only way I don’t see it happening is if Jerry gives him a redonkulus contract that he simply can’t refuse.

  12. Fort Myers Dave Says:

BTW by 2015 Super Bowl I believe that PFW found a sportsbook that is already taking action for Super Bowl 50 in San Fran so its actually the 2016 Super Bowl…

  13. Fort Myers Dave Says:

JC of the Tower posts what all of us Buc fans would love to see: a respected coach telling the Evil Empire of the NFL and it emporer to go get stuffed and come home to finish his career in Tampa with his buddy Lovie. I’d like that too but the realist in me also realizes that things usually go the Cowboys way, not Tampa’s (at least since the Glazer lads took oover team ops from malcolm). I hope JC is right though, I just have my doubts along with all cynical Buc fans who have followed this team through thick and a lot of thin…. My best guess is that Emperor Jerry makes Marinelli the highest paid coordinator in NFL history; something the fiscally conscious Glazers can not match…

  14. Pickgrin Says:

Nobody is mentioning that besides his BFF Lovie – Marinelli has another person here who he would love to work with again as well – his protege – DL coach Joe Cullen.

  15. Zam Says:

He may like deepsea fishing, can’t do much of that in Big D.

  16. DB55 Says:

I’m going to try to not get too excited. Fingers crossed.

  17. SoonerinTampa Says:

Again, I will stick with what the professionals are saying…LaCanafore says Rod will be a Buc!

I certainly don’t get why Joe is such a nonbeliever.

  18. lion Says:

Rod Marinelli will be with the Bucs next year Joe, just watch! Of course they want him to stay, that doesn’t mean that he will.

  19. bucrightoff Says:

Sounds like he’s back to Dallas for sure. Obviously, Cowboys are a better team with more job security. Rod’s a smart guy.
