Report: Winston Will Declare For NFL Draft Today

January 7th, 2015

That massive exhale you just heard from St. Pete Beach to Valrico was from legions of Bucs fans who can’t wait for Tampa Bay to draft crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston.

Winston has thrown in the towel on Florida State Football — and baseball — and will declare for the NFL Draft today, so reports ESPN. Winston’s dad talked to the network.

Winston, of course, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown. And numerous NFL experts believe he’s the most talented and NFL-ready QB in college football. The ESPN report claims Winston earned a first-round grade from the NFL draft advisory committee that advises college athletes.

Man, Winston would look great in a Bucs uniform.

Right now, Joe is recalling what legendary FSU and Bucs radio voice Gene Deckerhoff said about Winston six weeks ago.

“Jameis Winston has never been charged with a crime. He has never been arrested. He has won 23 consecutive games, every game he has started. He is a leader in the clubhouse on the baseball team. He is a team leader in the locker room on the football team. Yes, he did win the Heisman trophy a year ago when he led his team, as a freshman, to a national championship. All the kid does is win.

“He’s been honored as much as any player in the history of college football, at least to this point in his career. And yet he is probably the most maligned and the most hated guy in a college uniform.

“I will say this: I’ve been around Jameis. I’ve been around his family. He goes to class. He’s a 3.0 or better grade point average. He rides a bicycle to class. He is the quintessential student athlete. I’m very proud that Jameis Winston is the quarterback of the Florida State Seminoles.

“I’ll promise you this. He will win a Super Bowl for whichever team that drafts him in the National Football League.”

Again I say, beware “The Cannon”.

  2. Tom Edrington Says:

Why don’t we just replace Licht with Gene Deckerhoff, not that Gene is an absolute, incredible, totally biased FSU HOMER….

Yes, I’m sure Gene is a great judge of how Winston will behave when someone drops a few million in his untrustworthy lap!

  3. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

“He is the quintessential student athlete”…..Bwhahahahahaaha…LOL….

  4. Notlovinlovie Says:

That does not mean Lovie is smart enough to take him. I will bet my house AND my first born he wont!

  5. Sketch813 Says:

Amen. All this hate for a KID. Jameis will get his head together. If he likes $$$ he will. Joe get ready for the Internet Cowboys to come in and spew hate on the young man.

  6. lightningbuc Says:

Well if Gene “the Homer” Deckerhoff says so, it must be true.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    Bribe Trestman – Draft Winston

    Trade Lovie

  8. BB Says:

Problem is Joe it will take so much time and effort by Bucs to keep him out of jail like the Tallahassee police did I don’t think it’s worth the trouble plus less than 20 percent if bucs fans would support him not a good way to start a career and even less when you take out the FSU fans. The other issue is I could easily see his film study and work ethic not being there.

  9. Dean Says:

Hire Trestman and let the vetting begin.

One other thing that scares the hell out of me. Rob is gonna stay with the Saints and I sure hope the Falcons don’t hire Rex. That would really throw a monkey wrench into the NFC South future. We have enough problems trying to get OUR situation straightened out, without the others correcting theirs at the same time.

You truly don’t think there’s any comparison between the two as passers do you?

    Seriously…..

  16. gatrbuc17 Says:

If there is ONE thing I am now absolutely positive of is that Deckerhoff ABSOLUTELY has no clue what “quintessential” means,

  17. Buc-O's 82 Says:

So Mean Gene, if you were around him all the time why didn’t you stop him from stealing crab legs, vandalism, yelling in the cafeteria?

  18. Waterboy Says:

    Whew!

  19. gatrbuc17 Says:

No Warrick. I do not. Just as tired of the argument now as I was then.

  20. DHutch Says:

YYYYEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH! FINALLY we’ll get our QB.

  21. SAMCRO Says:

Yeah finally we can trade down and select Winston.

  22. port richey george Says:

    no rebuilt 0-line=mariota
    rebuilt 0-line= Winston.
    best choice=trade the pick.

  23. ChanEpic Says:

Port Richey George – Trading the #1 pick is the BEST choice? Who are you people?

  24. ChanEpic Says:

Love and Warrick – Consider the source for the quote. Secondly, Tim Tebow had a TOTALLY different game than Winston. Third, Tebow fans were delusional as a rule.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I think I prefer Mariota, but I would be just fine with either. The one thing that makes me like Winston is that on the field, he is a safer bet. He is a pocket passer playing in a pro style offense. I don’t see too many weaknesses in his game, and there’s no doubt he could and probably should start from day one. Mariota may take some time, which probably means more Josh McCown for the first several games. Me no likey that.

  26. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Winston has thrown in the towel on Florida State Football”

    @Joe

If that’s your opinion you’re entitled to it. But I haven’t seen any credible journalism done..by anybody not simply picking on you…,on this subject.

How do you know that FSU didn’t throw in the towel on Jameis. Perhaps Jimbo has had enough distraction. Jimbo has gained great cred in the AA community for his defense of Jameis. Players respected that. But Jimbo has to know that at some point that defense could also come back to bite him if Jameis stays another year.

AGAIN Joe and Jameis lovers explain this to me. I get that the sexual charges were just that…nothing more than charges. I also understand how a hormone drenched young man can get into trouble with ladies. I get that a manager at a Tallahassee Publix was probably a Seminole groupie and routinely let star players walk out with stuff for free.

I’m not defending these actions simply stating that I understand.

What I do NOT understand from Jameis or any of you jock sniffers out there defending him not matter WHAT he does how any 20 year old young MAN is so freaking stupid as to have been under a microscope for sexual charges and then jumps and and screams the particular obscenity he chose.

Can any of you explain that to me. Youthful mistake. Are you kidding. He’s freaking 20. He was already under the cloud of the sexual investigation. Even if one assumes he was innocent of rape and none of us were there so none of us have any more than an “opinion” on that subject…but giving Jameis the benefit of the doubt he HAD to know that after charges of that type…creating a distraction…jumping up in an FSU building on campus loaded with students..EVERY one of whom has a cell phone capable of recording anything…is just beyond stupid.

Can any of you Jameis lovers actually explain the kind of lack of judgement that goes behind any 20 year old man charged with rape, who admits to the sex…which even if consensual…was not exactly something for Jameis to brag about…how can he get up on a table with that cloud over his head and scream f her in the pssy? Seriously!!! Do any of you have an answer?

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wow!!! This is great news for the Bucs trading down prospects….just think, now all those teams craving Winston will have a shot at him now…..we can’t lose if Mariota declares…….just trade the pick to Tenn then trade down again!!!

By the way, Joe……do you plan to let us know the results of your “poll”…..or are the “chads” being counted???

  28. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    BTW

Forgive the mistake in that post. Jameis was not charged but accused and there were hearings.

My point is not to insinuate Jameis committed rape…it’s to point out that a 20 year old who has been charged with rape should have more brains than to jump on a table and scream f her in the pssy.

  29. MadMax Says:

I agree. Just trade it. Too many holes, especially on the O line tasked with protecting the QB. Get some pass rush, get a linebacker to play MLB. AND WORK ON THAT O LINE!

  30. nate_tweetz Says:

@ port richey george, Mariota will DIE without a rebuilt O-line. He will either get pounded rolling out (what he does in college, but wont be able to do for a long time in the NFL) or he will try to sit in the pocket and get his skinny a$$ crushed. Winston has already had to play behind a subpar offensive line. He did it all season and managed to make throws while getting pummeled. He did throw more INTs this year, but he was able to take the hits and stay relatively healthy. Winston can take hits. I haven’t seen Mariota take any. I can guarantee that will NOT be the case in the NFL. Whichever QB they pick, that offensive line will have to improve for either of them to have a chance.

  31. Tee Says:

Maaaaannnnnnn! Some of you need the “C’mon Man!”. Nothing against Mariota but to have all this hate and judgement of Winston is crazy! What is so wrong with the Bucs drafting a bonafide winner which is what Winston is. Peyton Manning did crap in college, Tom Brady as well… Hell look at Big Ben! My point is we don’t know what transition this kid will make once he is in the league which could be for the better, neither do we know for Mariota either. Just be happy that as a team we get the first crack at making this team better because they both are waaaayyyyyy better than what we have.

  32. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Whether it’s Marcus or Jameis I’m not for letting them sit behind McCown. Both are already better than McCown.

Russell Wilson was a third round draft choice who beat out a QB who was signed specifically to be Seattle’s starter. There is no reason on God’s earthy why either Jameis or Marcus couldn’t beat out the QB talent on our team…experience or not.

How did the most experienced QB on the team play last year. Did he looked experience making all those horrid turnovers, many of which qualified for freaking blooper reels.

  33. Snook Says:

So glad I get to hear Gene call Winston TDs for the Bucs after calling them for the Noles.

    Perfect quote by Deckerhoff.

  34. armchairGM Says:

If we draft this guy get ready for negative media and over sensationalized articles as well as articles and video from the TMZ’s of the world who follow the guy around everywhere and try to find anything they can to keep him looking bad. We will be the Cleveland brown of the NFL next year

  35. deminion Says:

    Draft him

  36. SAMCRO Says:

Winston has already had to play behind a subpar offensive line.

    __________________________________

WRONG, four of five starting FSU lineman will be in the draft. If it weren’t for FSU’s strong offensive line this year Winston would probably be an after thought.

  37. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Peyton Manning did crap in college, Tom Brady as well… Hell look at Big Ben!”

Bullspit. Manning and Brady are accused of one incident and as I recall Manning actually apologized.

Has Jameis apologized yet for jumping up and screaming “f her in the pssy” while he himself is under investigation on sexual charges?

It’s not the sexual allegations. It’s not the bb guns…it’s not the crab legs…it’s not the obscenity screaming….what freaking part of this are you guys not getting…that’s not an INCIDENT…it’s a PATTERN

If you use your noggins you’d be most upset by the obscenity incident because that occurred WHILE HE WAS BEING INVESTIGATED by the school on the sex charge.

It’s a PATTERN of being totally self absorbed, entitled and STOOOOOPID!!!

  38. Dave Says:

Draft honor the duck. Both are winners and leaders.
And waaaaaay better than anything the Bucs have had in years

  39. Snook Says:

WRONG, four of five starting FSU lineman will be in the draft. If it weren’t for FSU’s strong offensive line this year Winston would probably be an after thought.

    ——-

Uh, wrong. FSU’s offensive line was terrible until they shuffled it later in the season.

And was his O-Line throwing TDs for him?

The hate on this kid is ridiculous.

  40. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Thanks for that correction SAMCO

Another canard being shopped on this blog is that Jameis threw more interceptions this year because he was thowing to rookie receivers who ran poor routes.

Rashad Greene is the all time leading WR in FSU history. O’Leary the leading TE in FSU history!!! Jameis had targets!!!

Jameis had a sophomore slump. Not the end of the world and doesn’t mean he doesn’t have talent. But take off the freaking rose colored or should I say garnett and gold glasses and at least post honestly.

  41. bucs4lyfe Says:

I don’t care if we draft Marcus or Jameis because they are both talented and will both have careers better than any quarterback we ever drafted….if you cant say that much about the florida state quarterback and all you want to do is point to his off field issues then your biased and you could never be a gm because your too emotional….FSU lost and yes Winston was the quarterback but the lost doesn’t hide the fact that he did look like a next level qb. the fact that mariotta won didn’t make him look like an all world quarterback either…his arm didn’t look all that strong, his barely throws beyond the line of scrimmage his entire collegiate career but that doesn’t say he wont be a star at the next level so i’d like to have either one…..

  42. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

Mariota is our new QB. To the vast majority, it’s a no-brainer decision. Embrace him, people.

  43. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

You yourself had said the majority of those incidents that make up the pattern have no validity to them. The autograph thing and point shaving also contribute to the “pattern” in people’s minds yet those are all totally false as well.

Was it dumb to yell a naughty word in the student union? Yup. Does it mean that you don’t draft him if he’s the future of your franchise? Over saying a boo boo word? Nope. Not unless you’re a moron.

    As far as Jameis apologizing:

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=jameis+apologizes

  44. ufcguy Says:

No one is saying he isn’t mature but some of you pricks want to turn immaturity into a sociopath. You are a haters . If he’s picked by us once he wins you will shut up and be a real fan

  45. biff barker Says:

    StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Winston has thrown in the towel on Florida State Football”

@Joe, How do you know that FSU didn’t throw in the towel on Jameis. Perhaps Jimbo has had enough distraction.
    ____________________________

Valid question SPBF, I’ve thought that it’s not Jimbo, but possibly the FSU board. While the guy has brought acclaim to FSU, not all of the publicity has been good.

Combating the perception that it’s a lawless program that the University tacitly sanctions isn’t especially favorable for recruiting students. Or Mom and Dad’s wallet for that matter.

They won the National Championship and had another opportunity to repeat again, but at what price?

Regardless, he won’t be a Buccaneer so it’s not going to be an issue for us.

  46. louden Says:

Gene just realy lost any credibility by saying, that he could guarantee Jameis to win a Super Bowl. How can you guarantee….
Almost as crazy stupid kind of thing to say, as Jameis seems to be in general.
    What a stupid bunch.
They just seem to fit perfect with the Bucs Organization as a whole.
So much BS arround just one franchise..

From a decisions making standpoint, draft Jameis…. Bucs are almost only good in doing bad/stupid things…

  47. Rrsrq Says:

Joe posters will say this is a non-issue, but I say yes, let’s go Bucs, we didn’t throw that Saints game for nothing

  48. Bill Says:

    StPeteBucsFan,

I’m a Winston fan, but I can’t answer your question. It was an error in judgement above and beyond what I can personally justify.

I will say that mistakes made by young people don’t need to be justified, but learned from. I hope Winston learned from that event.

With the news breaking today, it’s interesting to see how so many people are now willing to acknowledge Winston will be the top pick.

The Bucs are going to pick Jameis Winston #1. If you don’t like that, cancel your tickets now, there will be plenty of takers. GO BUCS!!

  49. Eric Says:

Hey what now if Mariota decides not to?

  50. bucs4lyfe Says:

all you haters know this…..there are two top quarterbacks in this draft and the bucs will get one of them, if you cannot get behind your team after the draft and hope for better days ahead go root for the jags, find some other team to complain about

  51. Eric Says:

Of course Gene is a homer, he is the play by play guy for the Noles.

    Geez.

  52. Dan Says:

    Joe stop trolling your fanbase.

    -Everyone

  53. Patrickbucs Says:

Eric please don’t bring that up:(

Mariota is 1 on Kiper’s big board Jameis is 6 for those of you that brought up Joe’s Kiper’s article the other day. Most scouts like Mariota better that I’ve read.

  54. Stanglassman Says:

StPeteBucsFan- You do know that Jameis was shouting a internet meme not referring to the rape allegations? I don’t think he even realized how bad it would sound to people who wouldn’t understand it. Very stupid I agree.

  55. Patrickbucs Says:

I’m excited to hear about Jameis’s Wonderlic score as much as anything.

  56. Joe Says:

    Dan:

So the best QB (now) in the draft declares, a position the Bucs sorely need, and the Bucs have the No. 1 pick, and we are supposed to ignore this topic, not report on it?

Interesting news judgement. You also mad at the Times and TBO for reporting this as well?

Should Joe also ignore the draft in its entirety?

  57. The Buc Realist Says:

One thing that no one has notice that each of Winston’s “offenses” get more and more minor.

A pessimist complains about the wind, a optimist expects it to change, The Realist adjusts the sails!

  58. Eric Says:

I believe that once Lovie and Licht do their research they are going to find out Jameis is not at all the person that this witch hunt has portrayed him t be.

Then when they see all the throws he can make, and how smart a football player he is, and how dedicated and driven he is to be the best, they will run up to the podium to select him on draft day.

  59. BFFL Says:

Next year when Mariota is kicking butt for the Bucs and Winston leads the league in INTs it will be interesting to watch how Joe somehow twists the story that he wanted Mariota all along.

  60. gatrbuc17 Says:

It’s not the sexual allegations. It’s not the bb guns…it’s not the crab legs…it’s not the obscenity screaming….what freaking part of this are you guys not getting…that’s not an INCIDENT…it’s a PATTERN!!
    ……………………………………………………………..
    THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is the main reason that I say we trade No. 1 to Tenn. Then trade 2 to a Desperate Jets team for a Shipload of picks. IMO neither of these guys are Can’t miss prospects. You don’t use no. 1 unless you are SURE it is a can’t miss and even then you are often wrong. Winston has a serious entitlement issue with disrespect of authority that I don’t see getting better with a fat bank account. Mariota may or may not translate to the Pro game. I believe he will but Im not a GM. As a lifelong fan I would like to see us get 6 picks for that No. 1 pick.

  61. Soggy Says:

What will lovie do will he be forced to take a guy or will he let the OC have the choice will he even take a QB, The Draft can’t get here fast enough for me..I would be OK with either QB but would like to see the bucs in a more up tempo system..I like the fast paced stuff not giving the defense much time to organize.

  62. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @BFFL

josh mccown is going to lead the league in int’s next year….if we have to find someone that can tailor an offense around the skills of mariotta then someone tell me why we cant just trade down and have mike glennon throw 3 yard passes like he’s done his entire nfl career

  63. g8rbuc13 Says:

Why is it that the fans supporting Winston cannot accept or admit that he takes WAY too many chances with the ball and throws WAY too often into double and triple coverage. He loves himself and thinks he can do no wrong so he ends up throwing balls that no one should because he thinks he is better than everyone and can make any throw. He is getting picked off left and right in COLLEGE, think how that will translate to the NFL!

This is not even mentioning his vast array of off field issues and the fact that Mariotta does not force the ball for the most part and is a model citizen off the field. Seems to me to be a pretty clear choice, at least at this point in the offseason and vetting process.

  64. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

@BucRealist, you’re absolutely correct. I mean, saying a naughty word and getting into a bb gun fight makes you Charles Manson to the haters.

If it wasn’t for the FALSE ALLEGATIONS of sexual assault and autograph signings none of the other stuff would matter at all. It’s a damn shame what’s been done to this kid

  65. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Bill

“I will say that mistakes made by young people don’t need to be justified, but learned from. I hope Winston learned from that event.”

Amen Bill. I agree and also hope Jameis can learn from them. I was hopeful he could remain in school and benefit from that education. He may truly have simple immaturity issues and another year could have gone a long way.

But that’s not happening. And so he’s coming out and whoever drafts him will simply have to take that chance. Since we have the #1 pick we do NOT have to take that chance.

Jameis has an award winning smile. If he could get his act together he’ll be a cash cow and I wish the best for him. I simply hope it’s with another team.

Having said all of that…if we draft Jameis I’ll certainly support him and root for him as a Buc. Unless he screws up. I NEVER rooted for Talib…I don’t care squat about his talent he’s a jerk and a loser when it comes to character.

I view sports simply as entertainment. It’s not teaching, or medicine, or defending our nation. And I simply do not like being entertained by aholes.

Yes winning is important but it can be accomplished with some class…does doing it with class make it harder…probably…but I”m willing to make that effort. Draft Marcus and we’re assured of a truly first class human being.
Draft Jameis and we’re not. It’s that simple. In reality both are gambles by historic measures. But one is NOT a gamble off the field while the other one is. Can anybody dispute that statement.

  66. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

g8rbuc13 the psychologist. Winston throws into coverage, not because he was trying to win or because he believes in his arm, but because he’s a narcissist. ROFL you seriously can’t make this stuff up.

Joe, please preserve that g8rbuc13 post as evidence of what a true Jameis hater looks like. I’ve seriously never seen anything like that before

  67. Stanglassman Says:

Such BS Biff- I’ve noticed all the Mom and Dads that have been scared to send their young precious children to UF because the Bull Gators pressuring their coach to cover the spread every game too. Come on man.
I’m looking forward to seeing the source on Jimbo or ‘the board’ dismissing Jameis until then it’s just made up BS.

  68. Bill Says:

The Bucs will pick Winston #1…..he’s the best football player college football has to offer. Everyone knows it, but not everyone likes it.

  69. Ray Rice Says:

Who gives a shhhhhhhhit. Sal already said we are drafting MM. “Because all of the experts know the truth.”

  70. bucs4lyfe Says:

don’t have to tailor an offense after Winston, he can come in and run whatever system is in place….just sayin

what happens if mariotta gets hurt then you get an offense that you have to change again because for a backup to take his place, go for the prototype qb and hope he has the desire to be a leader and champion he did in college

  71. lightningbuc Says:

This place is turning into JameisExcuseFan.com

  72. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

A few posts back you pointed at the lack of an apology from Jameis as an example of his classless behavior. I provided easily found examples of him apologizing. Will you admit you were wrong on that?

THis is just classic hater behavior. You shout from the rafters at what an a-hole the kid is (I bet you were one of the loudest autograph criticizers) and then the second it’s proven wrong you just move on to the next nonsense (point shaving! BB gun fight! He’s a monster!)

  73. g8rbuc13 Says:

CreamsicleBananaHammock maybe you should not read more into the post then is there. He makes stupid decisions with the ball because he thinks he can make the throw. Of course he makes the throw to try and win a game, that is why you play football. He, however, makes consistently worse decisions with the ball and reminds more and more people of Freeman.

None of this even takes into account all of the horrible decisions he makes off of the field or things like the incident with the suspension where he shows up in full uniform without his coach even knowing or a huge number of other issues that shows he is immature and just doesn’t get it.

This kid is a 100% idiot with a startling record of poor decisions that shows a very bad pattern. He is likely going to end up more like Vince Young, Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell than anything else. I don’t want to go anywhere near something like that. You want to hitch your sail and sink the franchise further then go ahead.

  74. bucs4lyfe Says:

wow why did so many people that hate Winston follow his entire college career

  75. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Yup, he put on the uniform and went out on the field for warmups during the Clemson game. The kid might as well be Pol Pot

  76. Scott Says:

Welcome to TAMPA BAY JAMEIS WINSTON!!!

  77. g8rbuc13 Says:

Why does everyone confuse legitimate criticism and concerns not only about a players decision making on the field but off of it as hate. This is a decision that will affect the franchise for years and any criticism is painted over as hate. I think I need to get a different forum with fans that are not delusional. Making an informed and educated decision about a pick is the prudent thing to do but I assume that will be construed as hate too. You Winston apologists are truly something else.

  78. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I hope he goes number 1, not only because I believe he’s the best QB in the draft, and will NOT have any off the field issues, but, because I look forward to all the pouters on JBF.

I’m not going to debate anymore. Simply because it’s a waste of time and goes in circles, will continue like this for almost 5 months. It’s pointless.

Looking forward to Goodell bringing out the number 1 jersey with Winston on the back on April 30th.

Go Bucs, Go Noles, Go Winston.

  79. Hawaiian Buc Says:

We are going to be a better team with either one of these guys next year. I’m just going to let it play out and hope we don’t do something stupid and draft neither.

  80. Bill Says:

    @SPBF

I really can’t criticize any opinion of Winston, but I can, and will defend the guy. The rape accusation is no longer an accusation. It’s done. The accuser agreed to the “judge” (the technical term escapes me), and in the most forgiving legal environment possible it was still the case that no charges or discipline could be justified.

This woman was “LYING”. At what point does that start to sink in? The accuser approved of an arbitrator who operated with a level of scrutiny below that of a civil suit and the case was still dismissed. She’s a liar!

That doesn’t change the BB gun incident, or the soda incident, or the crab legs, or the profane use of the 1st amendment. But lets be real, if we realize he isn’t a rapist, how much of that really matters? The crab leg incident is no larger a fine than MM’s recent speeding ticket.

  81. Barry Says:

Ask Winston real quick to spell NFL. Now you know why he’ll be a NFL bust.

  82. Barry Says:

Simple answer. Joe has no interest babysitting malicious comments about Joe or Joe’s partners. Joe prefers to spend his time covering the Bucs, rather than allowing others to insult him and his associates, often with baseless claims and lies. –Joe

What’s been done to this kid? His buddies taped his sexual act and then deleted it, no big deal:( Someone made him shoot a BB gun at windows, steal crab legs and shout out like a classless juvenile that his classmates were disgusted and reported it? Really c’mon man. It’s as shame what’s been down to Mariota and Petty as well, oh wait. I know a lot of FSU grads were embarrassed by him and are glad he’s done there and want Mariota as a pick. This has nothing to do with college affiliation as it does for the Bucs future. Every college team has had bad seeds including the Gators doesn’t mean you want them to be the face of your local franchise. Get over your affiliation and excuses for the kids behavior and poor sophomore year.

The Bucs will pick Winston #1…..he’s the best football player college football has to offer. Everyone knows it, but not everyone likes it.

This is exactly how I feel. I’m not an FSU fan nor am I really a Jameis Winston fan. I don’t understand all this love for Marcus Mariota. Jameis Winston is far and away the more NFL ready QB. It really shouldn’t be a debate.

What are some of you guys hoping for in Mariota? The next Kaepernick or Cam Newton? The next RGIII? All of which have been flash in the pan QBs so far. I thought Rick Stroud said it best this morning on the air when he said Jameis Winston is a plug-and-play QB. You can’t say the same thing about Marcus Mariota.

  88. bucs4lyfe Says:

ask a guy in college with over a 3.0 gpa, a guy with a Heisman trophy, a guy that’s been the leader of a football team and you wanna ask him how to spell nfl, something players like that have dreamed of since they were kids…nah barry shut up because seems like your the idiot, is that the best you could do you should be embarrassed and never post with that name again because of shame

  89. ChanEpic Says:

Quick question for the Mariota people, aka the neo-MGM, what do we do if and when Mariota gets hurt? Who will we bring off of the bench to run the Mariota-specific offense? Do we have another spread/option QB sitting on the bench?

I’d be OK with either choice, Mariota, Winston or trade down for extra picks. I do believe the choice has already been made to take Mariota. The Winston lovers better prepare their angry responses because in my opinion he won’t be joining the Bucs.

  93. bucsQcCity Says:

I don’t root for Winston or Mariotta particularly but this Winston hate is ridiculous. Allegations and charges are not the same and if the charges has been dropped, then people need to move on (anyone remember Ray Lewis??). As for yelling stupid things it’s not its smartest action but there was no victim of that.. Heck I did a lot more stupid things back in the days and I’m not in jail or living a miserable life. What the Bucs needs to do, if they decided Winston is the man, is to get a mentor for him like Derrick Brooks. Simple as that. I think people associate Winston to the Freeman debacle and we should try to stay away from comparison as there story are completely different.

Bucs will now have the choice of selecting the best QB this year so it’s all good. Now we can hire an OC based on our QB evaluation.

  94. mark2001 Says:

I’d trade down if the value is there before taking Winston, in a heart beat. The only question is, is Marriota worth a number one pick. And no one should drop the Warren Sapp card as a reason to pick a guy that some might questionable baggage….Winston makes Sapp look like Albert Einstein comparatively….intellectually. More likely Heee Heee Josh “I’m bad” Freeman is the closer comparison.

Good point too but we can’t state of what happened that night. Did FSU made some poor decisions regarding this case? It does look that way and there is a lawsuit coming for them and if it’s the case they need to pay, just like Penn State was penalized for the Sanduski case.

As a father of 2 daughters, the rape allegations are very serious and if there is an once of truth that can be proved, then we should not even consider Winston. I don’t root for FSU, I’m not even american so I don’t really care who we choose but at one point you need to trust the system in place that there wasn’t any reasonable evidence of rape this night between her and Winston.

Crazy women exist too you know. Just watch “The Maury Show” lol

  103. Tye Says:

And so begins another story of yet another overrated QB who is worshiped by some who will realize in around 2-3 years or so that he can not and will not live up to their expectations, be discarded off to another team or likely out of the NFL like so many others that people get angry and dispute will never happen until it does (Josh Freeman like)!

NO NFL team in their right mind will draft a guy as a high pick that has so many red flags that he will likely often be unavailable to play like Adrian Peterson, Ray rice, or maybe even Aaron Hernandez…

If character issues were any part of the reason the Bucs got rid of Aquib Talib, Laggerett Blount, Mike Williams or any other than why would they draft the FSU kid? Why not just start looking to prison systems to see if any young kid has NFL talent and get him a pardon because according to some fans logic, talent and ability trumps social behavior… Could be a part of the reason violence has escalated in this generation over the years!

  104. tampa2ali Says:

NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks wrote last week that Winston’s character issues will raise red flags in most meeting rooms.” But Brooks also wrote that “Winston remains the most pro-ready passer in college football. He is an exceptional pocket passer with big-time talent and valuable experience in a pro system.”

Winston threw for 7,984 yards, 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions (including 18 this season) in his two years with the Seminoles.

  105. Phil Says:

We can only the Bucs are smart enough to draft Winston with the first pick and give us something we have never had a franchise quarterback.

  106. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

I don’t think it was a massive exhale as it was a major sigh from St. Pete Beach to Valrico was from legions of Bucs fans who were praying he would stay another year so we didn’t have to hear about him. You know since the majority of Bucs fans don’t want him.

  107. Patrickbucs Says:

    @getaclue

What NFL team pays you to evaluate again? Lots of NFL people have said Mariota is the head of this class not just people on this board. Everyone plays in a system, so does Winston and he played poorly this year with lost of talent around him. Not as good as last year though but either were his numbers. It sounds like you don’t watch must tape on Mariota, watch the Eagles offense, Seattle’s either. Mariota barley runs and thows a lot of deep passes and roll outs just like Wilson for Seattle. The NFL is changing and we have a chance to be a part of it with the best of the bunch. It’s not going to be totally an Oregon offense either is Chip Kelly’s.

Whomever they draft I will give a chance to but the offensive coordinator needs and oline to start whoever that will be or it won’t matter.

  108. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

The real reason he is coming out?

“When he got to the sideline, he and coach Jimbo Fisher got into a heated verbal spat.

That gaffe showed Winston can be a loose cannon both on the field and off. There are no doubts Winston is incredibly gifted. But there are plenty of doubts about whether he can actually pull himself together and harness that talent into a successful NFL career.

Those doubts are not getting much airplay at the moment. Rather than debate whether he can be a model citizen, pundits are debating whether his skill set, work ethic and measurables are enough to make him the No. 1 overall pick. “Had he returned to school and gotten hurt, or thrown another 18 interceptions, or had another sideline tiff with Fisher, or gotten into trouble off the field again, you can bet those doubts would have threatened his draft stock.” -ESPN

  109. bucs4lyfe Says:

Winston is an overrated QB but mariotta isn’t? if Winston was coming out after winning the Heisman last year he would be in the same spot as mariotta right now. and I don’t know but im sorry what quarterback do you know that doesn’t make bad decisions because they all do including the best in the game or did you watch the superbowl last year….with these qb’s it’s all about the ceiling and development not whether he is stealing damn crabs in his free time….Russell Wilson is a small dude and doesn’t absorb big hits like a taller quarterback would so stop comparing him to Wilson already. how many times do defenses have to prove that running quarterbacks cannot sustain the hits? he has to be a drop back quarterback and Winston does that better

  110. lightningbuc Says:

    ChanEpic

Of course there was nothing there for the judge to see, we all knew that would be the case – the Tallahassee Police Department didn’t bother investigating and collect evidence – as has been well documented by many news sources NOT affiliated with FSU and Tallahassee in any way. I get it – you’re an infatuated FSU fan and therefore a JW fan. I’m not. And please stop referring to a 21 year old as a “kid”. He’s a grown man.

  111. BoJim Says:

Winston did this. And Winston did that. You know who cares what we think? Not the people at One Buc Place.

BTW. There was another QB that threw a pretty mean fastball in college and could’ve played MLB. Could it beeeeeee Elway?

  112. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

I’ll wait until it happens though considering it his dad saying this. In July his dad said he would stay to get his degree. Then his dad said that after the championship game that he would declare. Now his dad is saying he will declare today. All the while Jameis hasn’t said anything.

  113. Patrickbucs Says:

    @bucs4lyfe

You speak as everything you say is a fact, it’s not thankfully. How do you know Mariota can’t adopt to other throws and systems? Wilson doesn’t take big hits because he’s small? Really? He’s smart and elusive, don’t see Mariota take big hits yet either.

Listen there will be many hired ex FBI agents in Tally and Birmingham area and they will know what’s up with Winston from kindergarten until today, same with Mariota. They haven’t even started evaluations, testing, or interviews either. None of our opinions mean much at this point. Well see what happens but the same daily comments are getting redundant.

  114. Eric Says:

What evidence did they fail to collect? They did a rape kit, talked to the victim who did not wish to prosecute.

Then when they changed her mind they interviewed everyone involved, except Winston, who did not give a statement upon the advice of counsel.

    Normal investigation.

The various interviews revealed drastic inconsistencies in her story, from her friends and the physical evidence (first she said she was knocked out and had no idea how she got to Winston’s apartment). How do you explain that glaring inconsistency?

  115. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

I think you are using the term “running QB” incorrectly or you think it means something that it isn’t.

  116. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

  117. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @Patrickbucs

I speak how I wanna speak on a website based on the viewers opinion, if you don’t like the station change the channel. like I said in the beginning of this article i’d be happy with either quarterback but the fact that anyone is even discussing whether his skills will translate to the nfl is enough to cause pause just like Winston’s off field issues shape others opinion

  118. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

“The QB will be represented by Greg Genske of The Legacy Agency. Winston, a pitcher at FSU who was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 15th round in 2012, also chose that agency to advise him in baseball. NCAA rules allow baseball players to have advisers and maintain their eligibility.”

  119. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

I was hoping Winston would stay to develop a little more on his mechanics. Oh, well, I guess we get to see if he can develop in the NFL. Still hoping we take Mariota though.

  120. rayjay1122 Says:

I will root for whoever we draft to succeed. No one knows which will have a better career. They could both suck in Tampa. We do not have a good history with hitting home runs with talent evaluation and coaching up the players selected. I love my Bucs but I feel sorry for whichever QB selected by Tampa. I hope it is not another Steve Young scenario where the guy is really good but fails here due to the entire situation then goes elsewhere and wins championships.

  121. lightningbuc Says:

Just a snippet from the New York Times is below. Hmmm, wonder who I’ll believe – the NYT or an attorney educated at FSU?

“In his announcement, the prosecutor, William N. Meggs, acknowledged a number of shortcomings in the police investigation. In fact, an examination by The New York Times has found that there was virtually no investigation at all, either by the police or the university.

The police did not follow the obvious leads that would have quickly identified the suspect as well as witnesses, one of whom videotaped part of the sexual encounter. After the accuser identified Mr. Winston as her assailant, the police did not even attempt to interview him for nearly two weeks and never obtained his DNA.

The detective handling the case waited two months to write his first report and then prematurely suspended his inquiry without informing the accuser. By the time the prosecutor got the case, important evidence had disappeared, including the video of the sexual act.”

  122. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

If his off the field issues mean nothing, why do you feel obligated to keep defending them?

Anyway, I want Mariota because he is the least likely to be a bust. Period.

  123. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Creamsickle

I do not “hate” Jameis. I do not support his BEHAVIOR!!! Arrogance, self entitlement are simply things that do not appeal to me personally. I like modest self effacing athletes who realize the ONLY reason they are where they are is because they won the freaking Ovarian Lottery. If any of you were born 6-5 235 with a 98 mph fastball and freakish athletic skills you too could be Jameis or any star athlete.

What has Jameis done with his good fortune? Was FSU in a better place this year after all of Jameis hijinks or was he a true pain the arse to the program?

I had hoped Jameis would return to school and grow up proving that all his misdeeds were simply youthful indiscretions. He’s not going to so some NFL team will have to gamble that the reason Jameis acted like such an incredible jerk is that he was imply immature, not really a self important, entitled jerk.
    And indeed time will tell.

BTW Jameis may or may not be a jerk. Up to this point has BEHAVED like a total jerk. But perhaps it was immaturity. But if we draft him and he takes us to the SB but gets caught doing something bad enough to get suspended and bring more embarrassment on the franchise are we really cool with that?

Are you guys really Al Davis…Just win baby. I’m greedy. I want to win. And I want to do it with class. Dungy won a SB! It can be done.

  128. Patrickbucs Says:

This is just the start of the true investigations that will be leaked about Winston so get ready. Some people say his accuser is a money grabber. Jameis wasn’t even named the starter went this happened. Winning a civil suit is much easier then winning a rape trial. Also keep in mind his accuser is from this area and he may have to go to trial if so if the suit is accepted.

Chris K that’s funny, although Dungy meh:)

  129. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Wrong decision IMO. Take a hint from Johnny Clipboard, and then Marcus Mariota. But whatever. Can’t wait to see if the Bucs draft him or the other guy.

@Patrickbucs. Dungy played for the world champion Steelers, turned around the worst organization in football history, and took the Colts over the top. I would say he’s definitly more qualified to speak on what an NFL player looks like over Joe.. Lol, but i get your point. Plus we all know there is NO WAY IN HELL the Glazers will put their teams future in the hands of a guy with so many red flags as Winston. Mariota will be the pick. It’s really that simple. Time for all the Winston lovers to give up the fight and just get aboard.

  133. Eric Says:

DNA in this case is irrelevant because Winston admits he had sex with the girl. And it wouldn’t matter if they waited ten years for DNA, the evidence is the same. Perhaps that concept is lost on the New York Times.

The prosecutor also said the victims story did not add up, just like the retired Supreme Court Justice did.

Again, why did she say she was knocked out by a blow to the head and did not know how she got to his apartment? Could it be because she came to realize many witnesses, including her friends, saw her get in the cab? And that she had no head injury? And her friend also confirmed Winston’s story that he texted her and she agreed to go home with him?

She is 0-3 right now and no case can be had because she cant prove the underlying offense.

Money grab is all the case is about.

    I disagree 1000%.

The more I think about it Mariota IS the product of Oregon’s system. Defenses are constantly being kept off balance by their up tempo offense. That shyte won’t fly in the NFL.

I say Mariota is going to be the bust out of the 2. Unless he goes to Philly.

Free shoes – Derrick. Does anyone care about that now. Was that a reflection of Derrick as a person. Or just a youthful mistake

Warren’s list goes further. And safe to day he had off field issues at times as a Buc. But it never affected his play and always was a leader.

    ******************

What does the Oregon offense have to do with Winston’s mechanics and pocket presence? Mechanics and pocket presence have nothing to do with a system. Also, the thought that a QB will do good with only one coach is asinine.

  138. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

This is the breakdown of Winston’s mechanics:

“Winston’s throwing mechanics are sloppy. And that’s putting it nicely. His feet are sloppy which causes his entire lower body to be sloppy and also his entire upper body. He gets away with this because he has such a strong arm and is still consistently accurate. With some discipline in his mechanics, Winston could become an even better thrower and more consistently accurate with the football. When Winston misses he misses high, especially to his right. He has a tendency to drop his throwing elbow when throwing to his right and causes a lot of his balls to sail because his hand dips below the football at the release instead of staying “on top” of it. This happens less when he throws to the left because the motion of throwing to the left naturally slots his elbow in the right position and he’s less likely to let it sail.
Under pressure, Winston’s mechanics get even sloppier. He does a good job of moving within the pocket but it takes considerable effort to move his big frame around and he’s not as precise or subtle in his movements as he should be. Winston shows a strong ability to handle edge pressure, it’s just the pressure up the middle that tends to cause his decision making to implode.”

“Winston can and often reads through a full progression and does so with good efficiency. He can determine his first read and come off it quickly if the defense shifts. He’s always aware of where his receivers should be and does a good job of moving his feet with his eyes so that he can pull the trigger and deliver the ball with quickness and accuracy. Despite all of that, Winston actually has the same issue with underneath linebackers that Mariota has. Sometimes he’ll be so focused on the routes that his receivers are running that a linebacker from across the field can sneak under a throw. This is something he has to improve on.” –NFL Philosophy

  139. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Jameis lovers…you have a right to love your guy. If you’re an FSU fan we get it. But try to keep up with reality. Jameis was not hampered by poor OL play or freshmen receivers. Greene and O”Leary are the FSU record holders at WR and TE…Jameis had targets!! And there’s this constant ignorance about what NFL experts…not bloggers are saying.

“What are some of you guys hoping for in Mariota? The next Kaepernick or Cam Newton”

Tony Dungy of course is a Mariota supporter. But we know Father Dungy appreciates class in his athletes and so that’s not unexpected. But with his son as a receiver at Oregon Dungy did get to see a lot of Mariota at practice as well as games.

And then there’s Jim Mora coach of UCLA and with decades of experience in the NFL. He’s face Mariota twice.

His take…Mariota is the next coming of Aaron Rodgers. The QB that is most frequently compared to Mariota or to whom Mariota has been compared has been Rodgers by more than one NFL “expert”.

Nobody mentions Cam Newton..that’s absurd…Kaepernik…a little perhaps…but he most closely resembles Rodgers in style.

  140. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    BTW

Is this possible on this board….holding two opposing thoughts at the same time.

E.G. It’s possible that the woman who charged Jameis is a shameless harlot out to extort money AND that Jameis while innocent of legal rape is still an idiot.

Jameis innocence of rape does not clear him of ALL the boneheaded things he’s done, especially the yelling in the student union. For all you Jameis lovers that was his way of telling the world F YOU I’m Famous Jameis Winston and I can do whatever the f I want. How else can you interpret a guy under the cloud of a rape investigation yelling obscentities that apparently arose out of the very same case he was purportedly putting behind him.

  141. Eric Says:

    Dungy traded for Keshawn Johnson………………

  142. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Aaron Rodgers ran for 336 yards in two years of college starting.

Mariotta ran for 2198 yards in three.

Rodgers did not run a spread option. Not comparable. Maybe they will be the same in the NFL, but, they do not compare in college. Newton ran the spread option at UF and Auburn. That’s the system Helfrich runs. Same thing Tebow ran.

  143. Buc1987 Says:

Hey it’s just my newly formed opinion on Mariota. He IS a product of the offense. That’s clear for all to see.

Thus is why I am no longer in the Mariota camp. I think he’s going to suck big time in the pros once he has to drop back more than run.

I also repeat once again. I think Winston is going to blow Mariota’s doors off at the combine.

  144. Cody Says:

Anyone who knows football from a schematic standpoint understands that the Best “QB” per-say didn’t win the Rose Bowl, the Best Team did…

I for one hope we take Winston over Mariota simply because whether you Love’em or Hate’em Winston gives our franchise a better chance to win right Now. Yes he has some baggage off the field he needs to clean up, but on the field, he’s as close to a plug and play/win now/NFL caliber Quarterback as Andrew Luck was coming into the league a few years ago; yes I said Andrew Luck…

Mariota on the other hand is good in his own right, but is also somewhat of a gamble. He has all the bells, whistles, and attributes you could ever want in a Madden QB; But, realistically could take a few years to develop into a NFL caliber drop back QB (Kapernick still isn’t there yet)…Also keep in mind scrambling QB’s get eaten like lunch meat in the NFL; ask Johnny, ask RG3, and Micheal Vick, etc…These kind of QB’s statistically spend a lot of time on the sideline…

    Mark my words:

If we draft Winston we’re in the playoffs in 2 years or less…

If we draft Mariota in 2 or 3 years from now we’ll still be “developing” a quarterback…

All of this Winston bashing is so childish and ignorant, it makes me sick and makes me laugh!! This kid has made some boneheaded choices, but so have many college kids. I don’t like or condone the choices, but “he who is without sin cast the first stone”. Winston has EVERYTHING you want in a QB!!! EVERYTHING!! National Champ….check!! Heisman….check!!! ONE loss in two years….check!!! Great arm, can make “all the throws”…..check!!! Size and escapability…..check!!! Leadership…..check!!! That man went into Clemson last year (Death Valley), as a freshman, and whipped that Tiger ass and never looked back!! And when you see video of him in the locker room (Google it), he is THE leader of a National Champion AS A FRESHMAN!! And so he threw more INTs this year? Yes, because he was on a mediocre team that would’ve been 6-6 without him and overcame those miscues to make clutch plays down the stretch to still win. Picture this. Bucs up by 6. 4th quarter. Titans ball. Winston at QB….are you confident, or are you scared? That should tell you all you need to know. If you’ve never stolen anything in your life, good for you. If you’ve never said (or yelled something) you wish you could take back, good for you. And if every sexual assault allegation was true, the Duke University lacrosse team would have been disbanded for all of eternity!! We should all be thankful that, after this bullsh&t year we have had to endure (plus the last several), that we have a very special talent that will immediately make us a playoff contender in year ONE!! The experts say he has all of the football “smarts” in the world. Lovie’s influence, like Dungy, will keep this stud in check. If we don’t draft this guy, it’s another QB bungle by our beloved Bucs. GO BUCS and GO WIN-ston!!!

  146. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Comparing Winston to Luck is like comparing Winston to Jamarcus Russell. Not the same and it isn’t even close. Luck never had the issues that Winston has on the field.

  147. Cody Says:

Guys Tony Dungy drafted and started Shawn King so his opinion on which QB to draft means absolutely nothing to me…

If you wanna win on the NFL level right now draft Winston, if you want a nice holsom guy who is the definition of “product of the system” take Mariota..better be prepared to draft Chip Kelly and/or Oregon’s HC/OC while you’re at it; not many people on the planet can run that style of offense…

  148. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Not sure why ppl hate Winston the guy can play ball and start day 1.”

Not sure why I even read a sentence like this. People pointing out the flaws in Winston’s behavior are not haters. Pointing out the very real danger this could happen AGAIN is not hating. Asking how people might feel if next year Jameis wraps up his first year as a Buc and a tape on TMZ surfaces with Jameis partying with Johnny Football and them doing a bunch of Las Vegas hookers. is that illegal Nope. is it what you want as the face of your franchise? Nope.

Can any of you Jameis worshippers assure us that won’t happen? Nope.

The sentence that I copied to start this post describes the problem here.
What Jameis can do on the field has NOTHING to do with what he does off the field. Nobody has trashed his on field ability. Some believe Marcus is better but they haven’t trashed or “hated” Jameis.

Nobody created this negativity but JAMEIS. What part of being a responsible adult are you guys not getting. Oh I know. If a guy can win a Super Bowl he is totally responsible with a great character.
