Jameis Watch: Matching McCown And Winston

A former Buccaneer says the Bucs are primed for Jameis.

A former Buccaneer says the Bucs are primed for Jameis.

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

The man who was adamant Teddy Bridgewater was the top quarterback in last year’s draft, is now adamant Jameis Winston is the grand prize for 2015, assuming he enters the draft.

Of course, Joe’s talking about Yahoo Sports! analyst and former Tampa Bay quarterback Shaun King.

King says his film study reveals Winston as “the only top-of-the-first-round quarterback in this draft. And not only does King think Winston should be a target of the Bucs in the draft, King believes Josh McCown and Winston are a match, so he told Ian Beckles on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday.

Keep in mind King was a teammate of McCown in Arizona.

“I’d be comfortable having Josh McCown as our backup,” King said. “And what I would love to do is see if we could get a draft pick from someone who believes Mike Glennon just needs a change of location. .

King noted Lovie Smith brought in McCown as much “for who he is as person as who he is as a quarterback.” And that’s why he expects McCown to return.

As for whether the Bucs would be in position for Winston, King doesn’t expect them to become winners over the next five games.

“If you look at our schedule, Ian, when are we going to be favored the rest of the year?” King asked. “It’s conceivable we’re in the top-3” draft picks.

We’ll jus have to wait and see

Winston has had a number of hall of fame Noles trying to mentor him already and look how well that’s helped. what is a career back up going to have to say to him? Especially when McCown is definitely not going to be out on the town with him, where Winston is his most dangerous for making a bone head move

Randy Gregory/Leonard Williams watch please, you know, the two guys they’ll actually be considering?

  4. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Jameis is already a million dollar athlete. EVERY agent, EVERY person at FSU, and ANYBODY else who is close to this young man realizes they are talking about MILLIONS of dollars here.

Follow the money. Jameis is not like Roethlisberger or Flacco from a tiny school that nobody follows. There are no secrets in Jameis life.

Given that…who the hell is advising this poor kid? I simply cannot believe FSU’s Sports Information Dept or Jimbo haven’t lined up some PR or image consultants for Jameis. Yes it’s against NCAA rules to take money but not in spending it for a great PR guy.

That’s what scares me most about Jameis. There simply HAVE to be competent professionals in his life trying to lead him to those millions and millions of dollars. Greed is good remember.

Either somebody in Tallahassee has totally scrwd the pooch or Jameis is a grade A head case. This fame and attention did not just suddenly catch Jameis or his advisers off guard. The second possibility is what frightens me.

Why do you all assume that the Bucs have any better PR folks than FSU?
Why are we not seeing pics of Jameis in hospital wards and mentoring young athletes at one of his old schools? Any half ass image adviser could make Jameis look great and so why hasn’t somebody up in Tallahassee flipped the switch?

Maybe they have and Jameis is simply a dim bulb.

STILL WAITING ON THE WINSTON POLL JOE.

  6. Pickgrin Says:

If Winston is on the board when the Bucs pick next year – they MUST take a chance and draft him.

Is it a risk? Of course. The higher the pick – the more it hurts if the player doesn’t become a consistently productive contributor. We know this well having blown the majority of our high picks over the last 10 years. #7 overall pick 2 1/2 years ago – Mark Barron being traded for a coke and ham sandwich (which we were lucky to get for him BTW) is our most recent reminder of failure with a very valuable draft pick. (Thanks Dom! – I and everyone I know was screaming for you to draft Kuechly at that crucial moment – exhibit A as to why you are no longer an NFL GM)

Opportunities to draft a true potential franchise QB, however, are rare – and (IMO at least) Winston is the best QB prospect to have come out since Luck. The kid is a proven winner and finds a way to win whether he has great talent around him (last year) – or not (this year). If he’s there when the Bucs pick – we have to take him.

Overpaying to move up and draft a QB is not feasible because we have too many other needs. If there is a serious offer from another team to move down and receive extra high draft picks – then we should probably do that for the same reason. But if Winston is on the board and there are no good offers to move down – he should be a Buccaneer. The same may also be said of Mariota – but despite his “great character”, dazzling College #s and athletic ability to run – I see him as having a higher bust potential in the NFL than Winston. Opinions may vary of course….

    @gatrbuc17

Thanks for assisting me with the poll request…..it is us older more mature Buc fans who have to lead the way!!!

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Jameis Winston is coming to Tampa.

I’ll be as giddy as a school girl for about a week….maybe longer!

TBBF..Perhaps a poll in say April would be more appropriate, seeing how I’m sure Joe doesn’t care what the results of the poll come back with.

I don’t think it would deter Joe from writing more Jameis Watch articles if Mariota came out on top, if that’s what your point of having a poll right now is.

  9. gatrbuc17 Says:

OBTW 87. Good luck tomorrow sir.

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

The draft is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get until you take that first bite. More times than not, you don’t pick a nut.

  11. Mitch Says:

I’d prefer not yo have this kid become a buccaneer.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Buc1987

Yes….probably April on the poll….but it is because Joe does really care about the results……bad poll for Jameis…..makes his daily articles less relevant….so an April poll will be unharmful…..

You guys have way to much time on your hands. Joe is sure to run a poll when Jameis and the rest of the key juniors and sophomores actually declare for the draft.–Joe

    TBBF,

    Poll results would speak volumes.

  14. Mr. Patrick Says:

As immature as Winston is, can you imagine what his behavior will be like when he suddenly has millions of dollars? He will be the Justin Bieber of the NFL

Patrick in VA Says: November 28th, 2014 at 12:38 pm

What the f**k does any of that crap you’re saying even mean? Jameis has never made a bone headed move “out on the town” to reference your spill from.

You just broad brush painted the worries of every single potential player issue in any sport known to man to make a very stupid argument.

  16. bucrightoff Says:

Drafting Jameis could be one of the all-time all or nothing propositions: If they draft him and he succeeds, the Bucs have their fanbase back. If they draft him and he tanks, the fanbase is likely gone forever and the team likely off to London. No pressure on that pick or anything…

  17. Dave Pear Says:

An unnamed source just told me that he heard from “Incarcerated Ivan” that an old middle school girlfriend of Jameis just placed a bet that the Seminoles don’t cover the 1st half point spread.
Wow! This guy is bad news!

  18. jo_mama Says:

How about a second round draft pick for Johnny Football?

  19. jo_mama Says:

How about a second round Draft Pick for Tony Romo?

  20. Bogiedr Says:

How about Glennon for RG3 straight up?

  21. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Mariota

  22. STULAAKE Says:

Regardless of what happens in the UF and Georgia Tech games, JW has proven he can will and rally his team to victory. Last I checked this a quality Bucs’ QBs sorely lack…welcome to Tampa JW!

  23. rrsrq Says:

I don’t usually like Florida State University Seminoles, but when I do it is because they became a Buccaneer

  24. BFFL Says:

Winston is a poor mans cam newton and Mariota is another example of RG3 or Kaepernick. I’d rather get Scherff or Peat and give Glennon and real chance with a legitimate offensive coordinator like rob chudzinski.

  25. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    JTHV

You’re calling out Patrick for pointing out concerns shared by NFL GM’s around the league?

You posted…Jameis has never made a bone headed move “out on the town” to reference your spill from.

Are you shtting me? I do not not whether FSU fans have an inferiority complex or what? Jameis is a great athlete who has acted iike a privileged punk.

You guys are in such deep denial it’s pathetic!!!!!! Jameis is a great player with a very weak character. I’m not suggesting that means he won’t be a great NFL player. There are plenty of self important punks in the league who believe that because God blessed them with physical gifts they must be special human beings better than the rest of us. I won’t bother with the examples of Jameis behavior because you either can’t read, live in a cave, or are such an apologists for “Famous” Jameis that the truth could slap you in the face and you wouldn’t know what hit you.

  26. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    TBBF says

“bad poll for Jameis…..makes his daily articles less relevant”

So you’re essentially saying that you want a bad poll for Jameis so that Joe might stop doing such irrelevant articles about him?

    Good luck with that!

  27. jglazer Says:

It’s Joe’s I can’t do any good investigative reporting so I’m going with my daily man crush on Winston. Joe is still in deep depression about no Johnny football in Tampa he will do anything for Winston.

  28. jglazer Says:

Are the Bucs this bad that JoeBUCSfan devotes 20 percent of his articles to this guy. What’s up with that?

  29. bk Says:

This is a no brainer MARIOTA. Winston is not even in top 10 stats wise in ncaa let alone NFL I’ve never seen so many brainwashed FSU fans on here. FSU has a great team not a great qb…just look at how many int he had in past 4 weeks. Do u really think that’s going to translate well in the NFL when every corner is better than any corner he saw this year.

  30. bk Says:

    Jglaze

No the Joe’s just can’t evaluate talent just like our front office old and current.

  31. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

bk….if you’ve watched the games(obviously not) about 4-5 of INT’s you’re whining about came off of tipped balls or deflected passes of his freshmen WR’s.

Pipe down with your brainwashed nonsense.

  32. gatrbuc17 Says:

Dont attack Tbbf for wanting a poll. The Joes are being completely remiss in not putting up a pole regardless of the “You guys have way to much time on your hands. Joe is sure to run a poll when Jameis and the rest of the key juniors and sophomores actually declare for the draft.–Joe” stuff that they put up. He has his reasons you have yours.
Good luck to JW tomorrow against the best D he has faced all year.

  33. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    The Gators…yawn.

  34. gatrbuc17 Says:

    I wished you luck 87
Are you not mature and cordial?

  35. Bucfan4life Says:

No need for a poll ever. Do a little research on Mariotta. He is not very accurate and very much a system QB. Basically in Oregon’s offense you pass to your first and only option. Most of these passes are very short and he still has some trouble making them at times. Other Duck QBs who got nowhere near the NFL had similar stats. If there is one bust potential in this draft it is Mariotta. My prediction is he will go in the middle of the first round and will never pan out.
