Glazers Zap Deal For $74 Million

July 8th, 2009

So it was announced the Glazer Boys sold their majority share of basically inactive financial holding company Zapata Corp. for $74 million.

Big deal.

This $74 million isn’t a whole heck of a lot of cash in the world of the billionaire Glazer Boys unless, of course, they are secretly broke and need the money to pay down the massive debt incurred by purchasing Manchester United in 2005.

But Joe just doesn’t buy that the Glazers are so broke. Smart, frugal, crafty, calcuating — yes. But desperate for cash? No.

If they Glazers were so hurting for money they’d have Manchester United play some English Premier League preseason games in Tampa. (The English preseason began this week.)

But that’s never happened, despite the fact that Manchester United consistently tours the globe every preseason to build its empire. They’re off to Malaysia and the Far East in two weeks.

Say it were two games in Tampa, both would sell out for top dollar and the Glazers would make a small fortune and could probably squeeze Bucs ticket sales out of the local and state tourism bureaus for bringing such a big tourist attraction to the region.

But the Bucs haven’t gone for this easy cash grab. Not the mark of a desperate group.

it’d be a bad PR move to bring ManU to Tampa, reminding Bucs fans of the G-Men’s divided loyalties … or maybe you were being facetious.

Divided loyalties? What all those Glazers can’t do two things at once. Most NFL owners have many other business interests.

Joe any whisper that ther G’z had exposure the Bernard Madoff, both he and the G’z are long time Palm Beach Jewish families, going back to the days when Jews had their own separate Palm Beach ultra select social/business circles

That’s a good question but Joe doesn’t know. There was a list that was released of all of Madoff’s victims (some in Sarasota) but Joe didn’t hear any of the Glazers mentioned.

Joe does know that Bob Kraft (Patriots) was a near-victim. Kraft was on Howard Stern’s show earlier this year and said that Madoff approached him about investing. Kraft had said a number of his friends recommended Madoff to him and he decided to speak with Madoff.

After his meeting with Madoff, Kraft told his accountants, “Check this guy out.” After they researched Madoff, they came back to Kraft and told him, “We can’t figure out how this guy is making a dime.”

    Kraft then backed off.
