Jameis Watch: Mettenberger Helps The Cause

November 23rd, 2014

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

Who needs alcohol to calm your 2-9 nerves? Joe’s got real hope to share.

If it’s not clear to you now that the Bucs should draft a quarterback last offseason in April, then Joe’s not sure what you’re watching.

Josh McCown, to be polite, is not the answer to what ails the Tampa Bay offense.

Jameis Winston may not be, either, but good things are happening in the NFL that could/should help Tampa Bay get a shot at a quarterback like Winston, who has franchise-QB talent.

Today, Joe was giddy that rookie QB Zach Mettenberger had another strong game for the Titans, who also are 2-9. Mettenberger rallied the Titans back from an early 17-point deficit in Philadelphia, only to lose 43-24. Mettenberger finished 20-for-39 for 345 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The better he plays, the more likely the Titans are to pass on a QB in the draft.

Raiders (1-9) rookie QB Derek Carr also is surging and performing like the top rookie QB of this season. The one-win Jags with Blake Bortles won’t draft a quarterback, either.

With all the inevitable quarterback uncertainty in the draft, and potential trade scenarios, Winston will be scrutinized deeper — and by more teams — than any college QB in history.

We need to build the offensive line before finding a QB…the is NO rookie 2015 QB that can come in and play behind this line or any FA line L&L can put together…time to dig in and REBUILD……..from the bottoms up

  2. Nybucsfan Says:

I don’t wanna hear the O-line bull. O-line can’t throw the ball. Draft the top QB address the line with other picks let them grow together. When you have a shot at the top QB when you have garbage for QB on your team you take it don’t be crazy.

  3. Kingpin1 Says:

Franchise talent???? Lol keep drinking the kool aid Joe!!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have many needs & QB appears to be one of them…..

    How about that poll….Joe?

I did my own poll and it came out this way:

    Mariota 44%
    Winston 26 %
    Another QB 13%
    Other Than QB 20%

  5. RastaMon Says:

    We can draft a QB in 2016 with a top 7 pick….after
    1st OT
    2nd OG
    3rd Center

  6. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

This Bucs defense is gonna be awesome. The Bears did nothing on offense but josh mccown was a better qb for the opposing team. MLB, DE, O-Lineman, QB, I said QB 1st round! I think i’m gonna enjoy being a Bucs fan and by the way Foster should have caught that int.

  7. DallasBuc Says:

Positivity in the most interesting places.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    That came up to 103%

That’s why Joe should do the poll…..much more professional

i ALSO ASKED WHO THOUGHT JOE SHOULD DO A POLL….THAT CAME UP TO 99%
    I THINK JOE VOTED!!!

  9. Max Says:

    Welcome to Tampa, Mr. Marioto

  10. Kingpin1 Says:

When Winston takes the wonderlic and had to do interviews with teams he will drop. Vince young ring a bell ???

  11. Yungry Says:

Winston has 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in the last 3 weeks… Combined with ref-tossing behavior…Mariota is our only chance…

  12. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

I like Josh McCown but he played like a bum today and made it clear as day that the Bucs need to draft a QB. I also don’t like Glennon”s sideline demeanor, when he was starting Josh was running out on the field encouraging him and helping him. But when they show Glennon on the sideline he is yawning and even smiled when Josh threw an interception, that’s bad.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @NewBucsFan!!!

    That wan’t a smile….it was passing gas!!!

You just DON’T want to be on the sideline when that happens!!!

Agree, said the exact same thing a few weeks ago.

  16. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

One more thing is that the play calling was horrible, the OC needs to go. Why would you keep running up the middle when your running game wasn’t working? How about more sweeps and tosses to the left & right. How about more screens and shourt passes in the flat as an extension of the running. Then how about a flee-flicka tossed in their to keep the defense on their toes. I can see this and I’m watching from home so what does the Bucs OC see?

  17. RastaMon Says:

play calling…it is not the play calling…it is the Freak’n Lack of Execution by the offensive line ! …

  18. Patrickbucs Says:

Anyone watch UCLA last night? That’s the other QB the Bucs should consider besides Mariota. If Chip Kelly wants him then so do I.

  19. WalkdaPlank Says:

I don’t trust Liar and Lapdog to make good decisions. So it doesn’t matter. But we NEED a QB. Why not draft that first and go O-line for the rest? Or stock up on picks? Either way, if that idiot Lovie starts McCown in 2015 without a promising rookie on the team, and/or a revamped O-line I will simply refuse to watch the games. I will follow the team, but refuse tosit through another Liar Smith induced trainwreck. Schiano’s team was 10 times better. And Schiano’s team sucked ass.

  20. Brent Says:

Mariotta that Winston is crazy. Give a crazy immature guy the keys to your franchise? Seriously 2nd and 3rd pick o-line pleeeaaazssee. In starting to believe Lovie can get the defense straightened out.. Jackson Evans looks decent maybe add reasonable fa we too.

  21. WalkdaPlank Says:

I would not mind seeing the Bucs get Brett Hundley. With him they could trade back and get extra high round picks and still grab QB. But only if Winston and Mariota are out of the picture.

  22. Mike J Says:

I don’t much trust Hundley. He does some things well (last night was one of his ”on”nights) but then can start missing, waiting for receivers to come out of their breaks, & watching the pass rush. Reminds me of E.J. Manuel.

  23. Mike J Says:

BTW–weren’t the home uniforms by both teams , well, pretty?? Same thing with Ga.-Fla. earlier.

  24. Mike J Says:

Actually, Brett got a negative grade at PFF: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/11/23/college-game-of-the-week-trojans-bruins/

  25. micronole Says:

Winston, on the field is the same caliber as Luck. His football IQ is ridiculously high. Luck is a bit more athletic. If he falls a bit in the draft, take it to the bank that he won’t get past Dallas.

  26. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Winston to Evans. Touchdown.

  27. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Has there been a team to take 1st rd QB then do the same the following year? Not sure why you’re so wrapped up in teams that drafted a QB this year doing the same next.

  28. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

The only teams I see being a problem is the Rams and Jets. However, Rams are doing ok this year. Also the Skins could.

Interesting. What has Winston been rated then this year with all of his turnovers?

Winston 24-0! You see how your thoughts just does not make sense?

  32. Patrickbucs Says:

    Joe,

You might want to add Washington to that QB list. If Gruden lasts he wants to draft his own guy I think.

  33. Josh P. Says:

Winston had 8 incompletions yesterday: 6 were dropped and 2 were throw a ways. If Green and Wilson don’t drop those balls it’s probably a 14 point win and Winston int. Was off his receivers hands. Not a better QB in college than Winston when the game is on the line.

  34. Mr. Patrick Says:

Winston will end up with the NY Jets

  35. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Mariota. Winston has been terrible. RB and defense has bailed FSU out.

  36. ufcguy Says:

Did u just use the word defense and fsu. You sir are on crack. A huge fsu fan and I’ll tell you that our defense is soft and terrible. The running game is decent at times with cook or pinder. Carlos Williams is avg. Winston just needs a few years and I’m telling you he will be a monster in this league. Only problem is we don’t have the coaches to develop him.

  37. C-Rock Says:

McCown reminds me of an offensive version of Sabby Piscatelli. McCown is the new Goat.

All we need is to draft a QB in the 1st, whether it be Mariotta or Winston, and then jump back in the late first round a grab Denzel Perryman from Miami.

  38. Mike J Says:

Patrickbucs, I have not seen a rating IIRC for Winston. PFF does a single college game a week. From what I read in places like http://www.rotoworld.com/sports/cfb/nfl-draft , the pro personnel people love Winston’s on-field play, but are more worried about the off-field transgressions than I would have thought.

  39. Mike J Says:

    C-Rock,I could live with that.

  40. Todd Says:

Need to draft a qb first then build around him! Period!

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    RastaMon Says
    “We can draft a QB in 2016 with a top 7 pick….after
    1st OT
    2nd OG
    3rd Center”

Little reality check here…first, most starting offensive linemen in the nfl were not first rounders. Second, any time Lovie has taken an offensive lineman in the first, he has been a bust.

Thirdly, it takes more time to develop a quarterback than any other sition on the team…so better to start there first.

And finally, the chances of the Bucs going all oline in the first few rounds are nill…although if a miracle happened and they did it, I wouldn’t mind. Heck, I say draft a qb and spend the rest of the picks on oline and safeties.

A suitable qb could become available in free agency or trade as well. Though in regard to a trade, with Licht negotiating we’d get reamed.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m for Mariota. Winston just sends up too many warning signals. Taking a qb in round one is always risky, but with Winston I feel like 3-4 years from now, we will allbe blaming Lovie and Licht for not seeing the obvious issues.

At least Mariota is an accurate mobile QB with no off the field issues. Only way I would take Winston is if we take Mariota and Winston falls to the third round. Having both would be too interesting to pass by…though it will never happen.

    Rnd 1 Mariota
    Rnd 2 OT
    Rnd 3 Center
    Rnd 4 Safety

(And DE with ay extra picks we have in the mix)

Free Agency, find an OG, punter and another safety.

Cut Goldson. Cut Konein (sp). Trade Martin or Rainey, maybe both. Trade Glennon (lucky to get a late round pick, but they add up).

    Cut our center.

    Fire Frazier. Hire Rod.

Fire Aroyyo. Hire new OC with his choice of QB Coach. Close the books on Tedford.
