McCown Names Leaders

November 19th, 2014

josh mccown 0812So what Buccaneers did Josh McCown reference as big-time team leaders yesterday on his radio show?

Joe always loves when players serve up names instead of generalizations.

(First, let Joe say he loves Total Access on the Buccaneers Radio Network. Kudos to the team for investing six hours a week for fans to get to know players and coaches. What a valuable media resource, as well.)

In a chat with host TJ Rives, McCown sounded emotional (not crying) and named the following players when talking about team leaders: Logan Mankins, Dietrich-Smith, Vincent Jackson, Clinton McDonald and Dashon Goldson.

Joe’s not saying there aren’t more, but those are the guys McCown chose to reference.

On Mankins, McCown called watching him practice “inspiring. It’s encouraging. It’s what you want to see.”

McCown stressed that all those guys have different leadership styles but all are effective.

“The fact that everybody’s heart is in line with giving back to the young guys and helping them develop, that’s what’s going to help us be successful,” McCown said.

Feel free to — or not to — read between the lines.

Joe knows many think Dashon “Hawk” Goldson is dead player walking, and a guy going through the motions while collecting a fat paycheck, but that’s not the case. Joe will bring more on that later today.

I thought D. Goldson made three really solid hits against Washington players. Enjoyed the hard, clean play.

  2. Joseph Mamma Says:

I won’t claim Goldson’s going through the motions, but his salary doesn’t match up with his production, period.

  3. Harry Says:

Funny, GMC is a glaring omission.

  4. lightningbuc Says:

Read through the list twice – no Gerald?

  5. bucco bruce Says:

the safety play hasn’t been good all year, I’d say…too many “late to arrive” on the deep balls and Foster seems to get beat up in his cover 2 drops too..

  6. bob Says:

    McCoy?

  7. biff barker Says:

GMC is background noise at this point. Dude’s always talking and has been tuned out.

    Another LVD snub?

  8. clafollett Says:

No McCoy can’t be a mistake can it? Ouch, that hurt.

  9. Cannon Fire Says:

Our acquisition of the ‘Hawk’ was too late. His game was nasty hits and intimidation, which he was great at. The coaches having to change his style of play ruined his effectiveness, as far as getting in other players heads. Too bad because he was a dynamic guy to watch. He was born one generation too late, otherwise he might have been a legend.

    No McCoy? Hmm.

  11. Patrick in VA Says:

I think McCoy not being on there is one of those goes without saying sorts of things. He’s obviously a prominent figure in the locker room and everything runs through him

  12. Chef Paul for Brandon Scherff Says:

All 5 of those guys knows what it feels like to be on a winning team

  13. OB Says:

I can’t speak for Josh, but he named all “senior” players. The fact that no LB was mentioned was interesting. As for what we are paying and getting, I will use VJax as an example, what he is bringing to ME13 can’t be bought and what he is bringing to the team in terms of off field behavior is beyond being bought, plus they still have to use good people to cover him. I would keep him for next year because of the kids.

I am not the coach, but if there are others in the same mold, keep them also because we are going to have a bunch of kids next year also. We don’t have a franchise Head Coach yet, he may develop, but I don’t think so.

  14. BucRock Says:

or maybe McCoy and LVD get mentioned so often that it was his way of saying that others are putting their “toes on the line” finally as well (with regards to being leaders)!?!

  15. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

I wanna know why Koenen has a C on his jersey! He shouldn’t be a captain of anything.

  16. Brandon Says:

McCoy and David are glaring omissions… wonder if it was an oversight. Also, I thought for sure Leonard Johnson would be there as the leader of the bench.

    Dear Joe,

Have some balls and call out the Bucs and the Radio station for not allowing FANS to actually have TOTAL access to the bucs.

We are only allowed to Text, Email or Tweet the bucs and coaches under this Regime.

Last season we could call and ask real questions. Questions which most people who make a living off the Bucs would not dare to ask for fear of losing their access to the Bucs.

My best call days were to Schanio. No question was off limits. He answered everything the best he could.

What we have now is Total Horse Sh!t. And for you to encourage the current format as anything more than that does a dis-service to your readers, buc fans and 620 listeners.

    The Bucs are cowards.

    Patrick,

If you are not a frequent radio caller and you think tweeting is for lesser humans then you just won’t understand how Last Years Bucs Total Access actually provided something back to the fans.

While this years bucs total access is like littler girls insta-gramming each other in class.

It’s entertainment man. if you don’t like it and aren’t entertained then don’t consume it. They don’t line up actors and singers so they can take random criticism from fans. They’re doing their best to create a product and entertain you. Allowing fans to call in and bash them isn’t going to make it a better product.

Didn’t you just go on the radio and say “the writing is on the wall for the hawk” because there’s a rotation at safety

I swear, the comments section just gets worse and worse after each week. After a decisive win (when everyone just assumed we would lose anyway) instead of more comments like…

You must not listen. It was better last year.

TJ and the Rest of the Clowns have to ask the worst questions to fill up the time. They offer no real insight because of their fear of ruffling feathers.

And as callers calling in. We just can’t bash away. Or else we would not get an answer. The questions have to be valid or they will just move on.

Somthing the on air talent refuses to do.

No. In no way am i happy with a 2-8 team. Not sure where you got that idea.

You may think Lovie is an upgrade over Schanio

At this point last year, we were 2-8, so mathematically they’re the same (and yes, Lovie is an upgrade over Schiano…who is currently unemployed).

And by the way you are complaining just as much as the people you are complaining about.

You might be right. and i should be upset cause i told myself i wouldn’t put up with these internet childrens’ negativity after a win… a game that most thought we would lose anyway.

LOL. funny that you think i’d be offended by a child. even more hilarious that you’d claim I’m a woman when its clearly easy to see who i am. I bet you thought that was real clever, didn’t you?
