Bucs’ Best Was “Contain”

November 18th, 2014

RGIII

Those six sacks by Tampa Bay on Sunday? The man who is arguably the premier Bucs Xs and Os guru says that wasn’t what was most impressive from the defense.

Former Bucs tight end Dave Moore, the film maven of the Buccaneers Radio Network, talked about how supremely well the Bucs contained Robert Griffin, III, which forced some of those sacks.

As Bucs fans know well, containing mobile QBs has been an issue for years around these parts.

“I think the thing they did the best was contain RGIII,” Moore said on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday. “The big thing going into the game was if you let him out of the pocket and extend plays, he’s either going to hurt you with his legs or he’s going to be able to find somebody down the field.

“A couple of times, he’s try to come out to his right and Jacquies Smith did a great job on one of them of stopping, turning around and running up the field to force him back inside when McCoy got a big sack.

“Later, we saw at least guys mirroring him and not letting him get outside to buy that extra time. And that’s what really made the difference. They forced him to stay in the pocket. He wasn’t comfortable with what he was seeing because the linebackers were showing blitz and then dropping underneath some routes.”

You can hear Moore’s full breakdown below via WDAE-AM 620 audio.

To be fair, RGIII isn’t much of a mobile terror any longer after all his injuries. His six runs for 41 yards against Tampa Bay was hit top rushing output of the season.

And the photo above? The guy leading the sack charge is rookie defensive end T.J. Fatinikun, who was promoted from the practice squad last month. So how do you pronounce that? Recently, general manager Jason Licht said he just calls him “Fat.”

  2. ddneast Says:

Typical jerk comment from a power type “fan.”

  3. Robert 9 Says:

    LOL

All hail lovie. RGIII…lol the only reason he is even relevant anymore is because of so many commercials. he’ll be out of the league in 3 years.

for the record. I am one of the most positive people there is. a force of nature.

guess I just take my angst out on the bucs due to my pinky sized manparts. “is that a button” as she said.
(really it’s cause I am pissed I was sold a bill of goods and spent 8 weeks watching an embarassment of a team while I could have been doing something else)

lovie sucks, congrats to the players for the win.

There was at least 2 or 3 plays where their WR got behind our DBs. We were incredibly fortunate that Bob couldn’t throw the long ball accurately.

Was it from pressure, or was he just off? We’ll find out this week in chi-town for sure. Go bucs!

  5. biff barker Says:

It’s near impossible to determine whether the Skins were that bad or the Bucs finally got it right. No matter. This team needed a win in the worst way. The reactor was running way too hot for yet another meltdown season.

The only thing that matters now is to string two wins together. Then go for three.

“lovie sucks, congrats to the players for the win.”

What a moronic statement. Do us all a favor and find something else to do for the last 6 weeks of the season.

  7. Eric Says:

Dungy started 2-8 here, and I’m sure these doom and gloomers were saying the same type of thing about him.

    Typical.

  8. Robert 9 Says:

did dungy get us a trophy?

    yeah, I thought so.

    @ hawaiian…….

now who’s getty there panties in a wad? it would not be much of a blog if everyone had the same opinion.

but hey, your entitled to yours. all hail lovie the incompetent.

  9. Pierce Says:

Watching RGIII was painful. He could only go to his first receiver then dump it. I’m not trying to take anything away from our defense. They were great. But this guy is really bad. I’m over mobile quarterbacks. Any QB who has a run first, throw second mentality can’t make it in the nfl for long.

  10. 1gr8buc Says:

I think Robert9 is secretly Schiano. Seems way too bitter for it not to be.

  11. Brandon Says:

As I’ve said before, those of us that are happy in our lives, don’t hate so hard on the Bucs. Those that find enjoyment in life, know that there’s more to life than whether your team wins or loses. I’m sorry there’s so many unhappy people. And no, I’m not happy we’re not a good team. I also have never thought we were as bad as most of you claimed we were/are. 2-8 with 6 of those losses coming down to the final few minutes, 5 coming on the final drive. They’re not a good team, but honestly, they’re 5 plays away from being 7-3.

  12. unbelievable Says:

@Brandon, you are correct. They have been playing some terrible Football the majority of the season, and yet we were just a few plays away from another 4 – 5 wins the season. But that only amplifies the sloppy play.

I think Chicago will tell us a lot about whether this defense has started turning the corner or not.

  13. BoJim Says:

Maybe Gruden got us a SB win but he did it with Dungy’s defense.

  14. Fort Myers Dave Says:

I’m on board with the comments by Brandon and Unbelievable. @ Brandon: yeah a few lucky bounces of the ball and the Bucs could be 7-3; not a good team but not a laughing stock either; probably a lot like the rah team of 2010 that won 10 games. I was at the opener vs the Browns at RJS that season vs the Browns and the Bucs escaped with a 17-14 win via a late TD to Miachael Spurlock after the Bucs fell behind 14-3 early. The Bucs won the turnover ratio 3-2 that day; it could have very easily been a 14-10 loss and have the same feeling as this season’s loss to the Panthers to open the season and who knows if the Bucs still win 9 more that season if they lost vs the Browns…. A lot of close games went the Bucs way in 2010; this year just 1, the Steeler game…. @Unbelievable: yep, we will see this weekend if the Bucs D has turned the corner if they can play decent vs Da Bears or if it was simply the fact that the Bucs faced a bad mistake-prone qb who was playing behind an OL that is probably now as bad as the Bucs have faced all year on a team that will probably go 3-13 and enter the qb sweepstakes themselves….. As bad as the Bears are on defense, their offense is much more talented than the RG3 squad the Bucs massacred, lets see them bury Cutler and keep Forte from chewing up the time of possession……..

  15. Dcommand Says:

Did Dungy win with coach Mora’s offence?

  16. Dcommand Says:

    @ Bojim

Did Dungy win a Superbowl with coach Mora’s offence?

  17. C. Alaka Says:

I’m telling you right now, I’m starting to get a good feeling on this D-Line. Lovie in St. Louis & in Chicago ALWAYS found no name defensive players who knew how to do what they were told. Smith & Fat are starting to make me believe! If we lose Sunday I’m sure it would be a close game & we will continue to see steady improvements from here on out. Bye Clayborn, Bye Bowers! What was most impressive Sun wasn’t that we won by almost 3 TDs but how sound the defense played. Not for nothing if RGIII hits D-Jax on that bomb we would probably not be having the same discussions this wk, but that’s what Lovie D is surrounded on. The QB has to make perfect throws & long drives which most QBs can’t
