Do Your Job

Bucs MLB Mason Foster talks takeaways.

Mason Foster talks takeaways.

Joe remembers how Bucs fans recoiled when former Bucs commander Greg Schiano recoiled when he heard someone mumble the phrase, “Make a play.”

Schiano would explain that often means a player is trying to do too much. In doing so, he strays from his responsibility and often leaves himself and his position vulnerable.

Schiano would counter rather than “making a play,” a player should just, well, do your job.

It’s a phrase Bill Belicheat made famous.

(As an aside, Schiano’s defense made far more plays doing their job than the Bucs defense is making under Lovie Smith trying to make plays.)

Bucs middle linebacker Mason Foster spoke yesterday about the dynamic of forcing turnovers, and it seems Schiano’s teachings have made a lasting impression.

“That’s what I pride myself on: making big plays,” Foster said. “Over the past few years, [I have gotten] interceptions, fumbles – whatever.

“You’ve just got to wait to make your play. You can’t try to go do somebody else’s job; you’ve got to do your job and the plays will come to you. But I was just thinking yesterday, it’s a long season – we’ve still got a few more games to go. [The plays] are going to come. You’ve just got to continue to do your job. As soon as you start looking to make those plays and doing too much, that’s when you give up big plays – you can’t have that. So just keep working and things are going to come.”

See? Do you job and the plays will be made.

Again, Bucs fans grumbled in their beers when they heard Schiano dismiss such a concept last year.

Now, seeing what we are seeing this season, with the Bucs trying to make plays but nowhere near their takeaway numbers from last year (Bucs ranked fourth in the NFL), it sure seems like Schiano knew what he was talking about, huh?

This is a steaming pile from Foster.

The same guy who bites harder on play action than a starving man getting a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving.

    Bull freeking spit.

  2. biff barker Says:

    We’ll keep working hard.

    We’ll get better every day.

    Yeah right!

9 games into the season and the defense still looks like it’s preseason.

All joking aside, I would swap Lovie for Schiano straight up right now.

I feel foolish for demanding his firing last year looking at this mess. Schianos Freeman/MRSA situation was a set up for failure. Should have given the guy another year. He will get another gig some day and probably be a good coach.

A licht/Schiano pairing would be interesting..

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Lets just fire Lovie so that the Glazers can bring in another “loser”….sounds like a great idea….
How ’bout we stick with this coach and let him turn things around……so
“Lets, lose with Lovie” should be our slogan…..”Stick with Licht”…..it rhymes if you pronounce his name the way it looks!!!

  6. Zam Says:

It’s both. Always do your job, but then be looking to make plays.

If you aren’t comfortable with the scheme you are playing, you won’t be ready when the opportunity presents itself.

  7. ddneast Says:

I agree with you Biff about Mason Foster and play action. I guess since he can’t cover, this leads to this behavior. He also gets in the wrong gaps.

  8. denjoe Says:

How bout when we master the basics like tackling and blocking……..just an idea.

  9. MTM Says:

Yeh this defense screams of guys trying to do to much. There is a large portion of this defense is unconscious most of there games.

  10. MGM4Life Says:

Does this mean Michale johnson is doing……………….NOTHING!!!

  11. Pierce Says:

AGREED!!! If freakin Adrian clayborn would’ve just done his job and cover Darren Sproles correctly like any other defensive lineman would cover a wide receiver then we wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place! Schiano is God!!! BRING BACK SCHIANO!!!

It’s nice to see that it isn’t only me that truly gets it.

Why do people keep talking about Greg schiano, he was a garbage coach and nevermind the fact that he was a horrible gameday coach, no one liked him even in the ticket booth office, he was a joke and didn’t even know who the only super bowl mvp was when he saw him, he got fired after two years and wasn’t liked by players or the front office, it’s worse than constantly bringing up that garbage backup who can’t throw

  14. THETRUTH Says:

Who has time to ask people in ticket booth about the head coach!! They should like schiano cause the amount of people showing up to games now they won’t need ticket booth anymore.

Lovie team looks worse and less discipline than schiano. Lovie got to bench Glennon and bring his guy schiano allowed freeman who wansnt his guy to throw for 4000 yrds and than train wreck himself in offseason till this day the guys a lost head case.

1yr one schiano had to clean up the roster from Raheem’s mess and players that stopped playing rah’s last yr. second year he got to build and bring in his men. Never got to finish I wish lovie the best but I won’t buy season tickets again and I have since 1982. Can’t waste 5 hours of my day watching this scheme that I could throw on and drive down field.

  15. Matt Says:

buc4lyfe- Ask the NFC coaches how they reacted when Sciano was fired. It was a collective sign of relief, they all admitted he game-planned for them very well. Schiano had to endure JF5 and MRSA. Last year should have been just crumbled up and tossed away and not used against him. Yeah the diving at the NYG center on the kneeldowns was bush league in the eyes of us outside the confines of OneBuc place but not to those inside. It served as a symbol to always play hard to the very end. Schiano will coach again and he will do very well.

  16. Walter White Says:

Who would you rather have as a coach? (Take this is a general blanket statement) A guy who looks pissed when his team screws up or at least shows some emotion or calls the team over at a crucial time, etc… or a guy who is a boring, lifeless, slug who has a deer-in-the-headlights blank stare most of the game? Dude, make like a tree… and get outta here!

  17. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ Matt

Well said on all points. And did anyone notice the Steelers blow up the victory formation this year…it was merely a blip in the media when a Tomlinson team does it, but Schiano was dogged for it. Firing Schiano will come back to bite this team in the butt just like the Browns firing Belichick did.

Joe linked to it. The biggest thing was Schiano’s stunt happened against the Giants in the media capital of the world. The Steelers pulled this stunt in a nondescript game in Pittsburgh.
