Jameis Watch: Saying The Right Things

November 12th, 2014

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s regular nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

NFL.com already has its own version of a Jameis Watch in full swing, as the big names there keep an eye on the 2015 NFL Draft.

Charles Davis touched on Winston in a column yesterday. He liked Winston’s public accountability of his shaky play.

Winston acknowledged as much after last weekend’s win over Virginia, when he told reporters, “I’m hurting this team.”

I’m glad to hear Winston say that, although this show of humility won’t engender the same goodwill it would for a player without Winston’s track record of off-field behavior. Winston’s quote is exactly the kind of thing a quarterback is supposed to say. It’s his job to be accountable for his mistakes and take pressure off of his teammates.

This story of brings up the bigger reality surrounding Winston. He must produce through his final five (or six?) games, otherwise his potential draft status will get very cloudy. He set the bar so high with his play last season, and set the bar high on his off-field shenanigans, that a significant decline in play would raise all kinds of questions.

Man, the pressure is on Jameis.

Hopefully he stays in school for another year……

  2. Dennis Says:

    @JOE

Off the field issues aside… who would you take Joe, Johnny or Jameis?

  3. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Remember his Dad wants him to stay and get his degree. He may stay, but then again if FSU kicks him out after his hearing he may not matter.

  4. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Run to the podium to draft jameis…..fire Lovie hire Mcdaniels up in NE or Schurmur from Philly bring in a young innovative DC seattle and lets go

  5. Justin Says:

    I’d rather have Mariota

  6. biff barker Says:

There will be less pressure on the player than the team that picks him with the character card out on the table.

Great player, there’s no denying that, but how do you become the face of an NFL franchise when you can’t even discipline yourself?

I’d take Mariotta or consider trading foe JFF.

  7. C-Rock Says:

I’ve been with you on Johnny Football, Joe, ever since you nailed it on the Lavonte David assessment. And once again I’m with you on the Winston pick. All it takes is one player like Winston to change the whole dynamic of the Bucs. I hope Derrick Brooks helps Winston become a born again Christian. I heard Lovie Smith picks guys that are either #1 from Texas or #2 Christian. j/k lol

  8. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    Bring Satan to Raymond James!

  9. biff barker Says:

    An honest question Joe.

After the Freeman debacle, do you think the Glazer’s would let Winston be drafted by the Bucs? Maturity matters.

  10. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Again winston is 20-21, and has made dumb mistakes and did not call a girl back after taking her to the champagne room and that is a fact, look around and talk to anyone that is or has been up there the past 3 years…..the guy will mature and having d brooks in the area to mentor him on being a pro athlete and positive contributor to the community can only make drafting winston that much better of a choice than mariotta, who is an option QB…..kapernick is on a team with a great defense, so is wilson, pretty sure the lovie D is somewhere in the state class 5A level right now

  11. phil Says:

We should do everything possible to make sure Jameis Winston is a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. If we don’t draft this kid it will be the biggest mistake this franchise has ever made and we have made a lot of them.

  12. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

We can rename the stadium Raymond Jameis!

  13. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    Raymond Jameis Stadium (TM)

  14. biff barker Says:

Alternatively, you can also name Ray Jay the “den of sorrow”.

  15. RastaMon Says:

    Dak Prescott

  16. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Mariota

  17. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

I can get wasted away in Mariotaville too…..

  18. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Don’t Winston 4 Jameis!!

  19. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    ODB that’s harsh man.

  20. bucrightoff Says:

Lovie is acquiring Cutler or Eli this offseason. Just to troll the fanbase a little more, because what does he care? $20 million no matter what.

  21. Rutgers4Schiano Says:

    Joe,

Your opening line might change if the point shaving investigation continues or is found to be valid. Then it will be” Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, Point shaving, rape accused Tally PD excused national champion James Winston.

  22. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @87

I have never pined for an FSU QB. In honesty, I was shocked by Ponder and EJ going so high in the draft. I never saw them as NFL starters, but, Jameis?

He’s light years ahead. He gets it. And he’s works hard. Don’t believe the comparisons to Jamarcus. The people who say that only see one similarity. We all know what that is.

My only trouble is in agreeing with Joe about a QB. LOL. Besides that, the kid is all you want in a QB. He’ll mature in Tampa, Brooks will make sure of it.

    DON’T WINston 4 Jameis!!

  23. BoJim Says:

Reading some of these articles would lead one to believe we should go oline, dline, MLB and a few DB’s (not counting Banks).

  24. Bucs_Sam Says:

    Joe.

Please please please stop pushing him.

    Thanks,
    everyone.

    p.s.

You were all about Johnny Football season, what’s the fascinating with somewhat talented QB’s with bizarre off the field issues?

One word for you, Josh Freeman.

  25. Pat Says:

On a side note, didn’t freeman get on ir due to fire arms incident. JUST SAYING!

  26. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Buc Sam….show me what 1st round QB has come out gates and shined immediately? WE have barely one win this season, if we added johnny football then maybe he gives us one solid win and maybe 2 and adds more sunday excitement for sure….so i am with joe and his campaign for winston on dale mabry, an fire lovie and blow the whole unit up and start fresh, get polian in here or a high up in seattle or arizona to direct player personnel moves hire schurmur or mcdaniel and lets move up we are below the bottom as of today

  27. Lunchbag AL Says:

Only way I’d draft Shameless Winston is if he brought Red Lightning with him.

  28. Mr. Patrick Says:

    Ryan Leaf

  29. Buctebow Says:

Winston is a crap shoot, just like every other player in the draft. The difference being that he could be an elite player, if he doesn’t self destruct on the way. Hire him a bodyguard like Jerry Jones does for his players with questionable character/decision making skills. I do think it is unlikely that the Bucs draft him though.

  30. rayjay1122 Says:

With this current coaching staff, as much as I want to get a franchise QB at the top of the 1st, it would not surprise me if they go OT or DE first and grab a 1st round graded QB in the top of the 2nd or trade back into the 1st for a QB.

  31. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    The Black Tom Brady.

  32. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

The Bucs could be 7-2 right now without a decent o-line, average defense, and horrible special teams. How many of these close games would the Bucs have won with Winston as QB?
