Lovie’s Nightmare

October 29th, 2014

lovie 0613b

Go ahead. Raise your hand if you thought this Bucs this season would be at rock bottom through seven games? Worse than with Raheem Morris. Worse than with Greg Schiano, maybe worse than Richard Williamson?

Joe sure didn’t, and Joe doubts anybody saw this coming.

Morris had a bad team his first year, but he was a first-time head coach, maybe in over his head, with a limited budget. Schiano had the MRSA poisoning his locker room and his franchise quarterback went mental.

Lovie has had none of these issues, though like Morris, he did lose an offensive coordinator.

This is a complete and utter nightmare. Not even Morris or Schiano or Williamson got alley-beaten twice in 24 days like Lovie has, only to return lifeless on offense after the bye week. It is a mess. Even the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, tried to make sense of it all.

Other than that, how was the car ride, Mrs. Kennedy?

While Joe contends the defense showed life Sunday — you hold a team to 13 points in regulation and you should win — this is still a trainwreck of a team, already jettisoning two guys who began the season as defensive starters.

Fan apathy is the worst Joe has experienced. At least with Schiano, all the drama kept fans engaged.

Joe cannot imagine what is going through the minds of Team Glazer about now.

    Didn’t see 1-6 coming…..we could be 5-2….but aren’t.

Off subject but does anyone know our exact status in the 15 draft….I am a bit lost after all the trades…..I have:
    1, 2, 3, 4….2×5 & 6…..

    Is that right?

Stop making excuses for Raheem, Joe. The man was a bad head coach. Period. He could have had a Washington Redskins budget and still failed.

“Lovie Smith played the key role in shaping the TB roster & staff, so whether it’s lack of talent or poor coaching, the Buc stops with him.” – Ira

Except that if you take a look at all of the players sent packing, they are the players Lovie did not bring in. Since it is completely impossible to replace an entire team in one season, I think Lovie gets some room.

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

So is the trade deadline passed now? No more happening?

  4. flmike Says:

I called it, I said Lovie would be the worst hire ever, I tried to warn you guys, I’ve been forced to watch the Bears, and when Lovie was just coaching, just coaching, they were ok, even with Grossman at QB, the defense was good enough to cover his lack of talent, but once he was given power over personnel thats when it went downhill, not that it was a sudden crash, but they only made the playoffs once after that point and keep in mind, Lovie has only ever had back to back winning seasons once. He basically destroyed our franchise in less than one calendar year, there aren’t enough draft picks available to fix what he’s done…

  5. Ralph Phillips Says:

There is a guy over at reddit named TrueBuccaneersFan in the buccaneers subreddit who called that the Bucs were going to suck badly this year. He said it about 8 months ago and has been crowing about it non stop. He is a dick but damn if he has not been right.

  6. Joseph Mamma Says:

Lovie’s nightmare? Are you kidding me? He is making 5 million a year for basically incompetent work, so far. The fans are the ones that are having the nightmare? We have to watch this pathetic excuse for a franchise. Lovie should take his millions and invest in hard liquor futures, cause that’s all I see for us.

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

We hired a coach before a GM. i thought GM’s hired coaches??? We know who is at fault. I could of lived with being told from the beginning that we had to clean house and start over. BUT NO, we were told that we would be competitive and we didn’t deserve to wait. The kool-aid tastes bitter now, cause I got back in line for seconds. GO BUCS!!!

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Bonzai

Deadline has passed…….trying to find out what are picks are for next year after all the transactions….

Joe…..any help with that would be appreciated….

Well, you must be proud of yourself. Pat yourself on the back for being Nancy Negative.

I still think you are wrong, but then, we’re allowed to have differing opinions.

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

    Thanks!

  11. Patrick in VA Says:

You guys that expect the team to be competitive this year, or next even, are kidding yourselves. I’m not a Dominick detractor but some of the moves made recently have set us back a few years. 1st rounder last year for Revis who was here for one year. Banks in the second who is just a hair above a liability in coverage. First rounders on Barron and Martin who were both just on the trade block for not producing, one was shipped and the other will be gone soon. Carl Nicks left a huge hole in the line. There are plenty of areas that need to be shored up with serviceable talent and the draft and free agency moves of the previous staff. You’re calling for the head of the coach who is paying for a lot of the sins of previous administrations.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Dewey Selmon Says
“BUT NO, we were told that we would be competitive and we didn’t deserve to wait.”

Come on now. Do you really think the Bucs are going to say something that will result in selling fewer tickets for the season? Really? Welcome to the grown up world, buddy.

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

Going through team Glazer’s minds is that the Bucs can’t win for losing. “Other than that, how was the car ride, Mrs Kennedy?” Is this a reference to JFK getting his brains blown out?

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Lovie & Licht set us up for high expectations….some in the media believed them also.
Now we know its a rebuild and we need to accept that.

Those calling for Lovie to be fired are totally unrealistic…..the Glazers will not do that….he has at a minimum until the end of next year and probably longer….so….if you just want to waste your posts….keep calling for his head…it might feel good but its just purely stupid.

Lets give him a chance to turn things around……now…..I could certainly go for a new OC/DC……and Jason Licht is on the h

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Licht is on the hot-seat for some of these FA failures…..I’m sure Lovie signed off on them….but if Licht wants the title of GM…..he has to bear the responsibility….

  16. flmike Says:

Not be negative, just facing the truth, the man cannot evaluate talent, he’s a coach nothing more, and between here and Chicago he has been elevated to his highest level of incompetence, and proven he’s not capable of what he’s been hired for…

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

Joe I saw this coming, I have been saying the roster is garbage since Rah was here. I said that the Pop-star was so bad that it did not matter who coached here as they had no chance.

This past off-season I said no more, I took a 3 week vacation to Europe so I would not watch this bad roster any more! best decision ever!

  18. RastaMon Says:

I want SOMEONE in the press/media to ask the direct question…which L has the ultimate responsbility ?

  19. TGreg Says:

Lovie makes Rah look like a genius. His snarky “we were a 4-12 team” as an excuse for shipping off players sure looks silly now. It will be a miracle if he hits 4-12.

  20. flmike Says:

The real nightmare is going to be when by December when they look up and see the stands 3/4 empty and realize no one in Tampa cares…

  21. billy buckaroo Says:

Seems like there is a new plan every week
    mainly because
last weeks plan didnt work either

we change plans as much as we change kick returners

  22. MTM Says:

The one common thread between Raheem, Schiano and Smith are the Glazers. At some point this teams coaching turnover, piss poor draft picks and high priced free agent busts fall on the ownership.

  23. onetrickpony Says:

    Lovie has lost his edge

    Well said!

    @flmike
I never agreed with the Jason Licht hire, and I’ve made no secret of it. But Lovie is a good hire.

Consider this. Rod Marinelli refused a contract extension and this is his last year with the Cowgirls. Considering Lovie tried to get Jones to let Rod our of his contract last year, where do you think Rod will end up?

So odds are, Frazier will be sent packing.

And, since I firmly believe Jeff Tedford will never return, I highly doubt Arroyo will become the perma offensive coordinator. That means a new one will be brought in and, more than likely, the new OC will want a new QB Coach, so Arroyo will be history as well.

I don’t personally believe Lovie got the staff he wanted. Tedford may have worked out if not for his heart issues, and Lovie could not have predicted it, but its time to move on and find the right OC.

I hold Lovie accountable for the draft picks. Those are the ones a head coach has the most say in. It’s how a team is shaped in his image.

I hold Jason Licht accountable for all trades and free agent signings. That’s his job. Any free agents not performing up to standard? Blame Licht. Overpaid or under compensated? Blame Licht.

Licht has failed to get a good deal in any trade or contract signing. Period.

Unfortunately, I think we are stuck with him.

Dungy had Rich McKay, who was a great defensive talent evaluator (I do have issues with the cap issues he kept pushing forward though, and then left when they could no longer be avoided).

    Lovie needs a good GM.

I think the offensive picks, except Sims, were good ones. I’m not down on Sims as a player, I just think that pick should have been spent on OL or DE. Really, so far, that is the ONLY issue I’ve had with the last draft.

The 2015 draft need list is pretty straight forward. QB, OL, DE and NOW Strong Safety. Probably Free Safety too, since Goldson has not paid off and his cap space could be used.

I think we MIGHT be able to address DE and one of the safety positions in free agency. If so, we can trade picks to move up in the draft and get the best QB.

The only problem is that JASON LICHT CAN’T DO TRADES to the benefit of the team! He’ll end up trading three first rounders to get the number one overall pick. Just watch.

And then Lovie will spend that pick on…you guess it…Defensive End. 😉

Exactly. No stability. It isn’t the Bucs changing plans either. It is the fans and media saying change is needed…every year.

  27. Macabee Says:

    TBBF,

We have 8 picks including 2 5th round picks. See Greg Auman Tweet!

Greg Auman ‏@gregauman 15h15 hours ago
Bucs now have eight picks for 2015 draft. Extra pick is 5th-rounder. Lost a fourth for Mankins, got one back for Barron today.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Macabee

    I thougt we gave up our 7th to Rams for a 4th & 6th…..

  29. RastaMon Says:

    Only 1- 5th round pick

  30. flmike Says:

In the NFL it’s easy, whoever was hired first has the power…that was Lovie, this whole f’ing mess is his….this is his second HC gig, he was fired from Chicago after a 10 win season, again, only ever having achieved back to back winning seasons once. The McClasky family gave him what he asked for, power over the personnel, they made the playoffs exactly one time after that, he had a steady stream of bad FA signings and drafts (also bad trades, Gaines Adams was just one of many of his bad moves), topped off by signing Sam Hurd who was indicted on drug trafficking charges while still an active member of the Bears roster. He hired Licht, he brought in his buddy Fraizer, he hired all these people, including his son as a DB coach, who by the way has never played the posiiton. This franchise now needs a complete overhaul when in reality it just needed a franchise QB and RB and a young WR, the defense while not good, wasn’t the worst either, it now is…he f’d this up and he’s not capable of fixing it, the honorable thing would be for him to resign, but I don’t see that happening, so the next thing would be for the Glazers to admit the mistake, eat the 20mil and send Lovie and his friends and family coaching staff packing…

  31. Phillip Says:

Um Verner is a very good player on a relatively cheap contract… Louis Murphy has been solid and carved out a role on offense here… McDonald has been decent to good on the D-line. Major Wright has outplayed Barron and its not close. Myers would have been featured more if Tedford was actually here so he gets an incomplete. Most of the other guys were depth and on cheap contracts… Definitely nothing wrong with that… Yes I’m skipping over MJ and the entire O-line that we signed.. 🙂

Getting a 4th round pick for a player that clearly(and unfortunately) hasn’t lived up to expectations is a great trade idk what you are smoking bonzai

Getting ANYTHING for Casilias is also a GREAT trade.

Not a fan of the MW19 trade… Idc he liked to have fun on his days off or that he got stabbed by his brother… He is worth more than a 6th round pick. No one complained about him his rookie year and 2 seasons ago.

Now trading FOR Mankins.. Well that was a bad one.. I think that was more Lovie saying hey idc what you have to do go get me a Guard who can actually play because I think we are gonna be good… LMAO Lovie you silly fool.

  32. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Lovie gets one year despite this piss poor showing this year if he does get rod to run the defense heck go get Leavitt to run the defense and then maybe a offensive coach from denver or houston (Obrien is a great coach) and see what happens next year but right no there is no hope for teh future right now in tampa

  33. willie d Says:

curse of eric page. what ever high draft pick you get the guy taken right after will be a star and Lovie’s guy well…will not.

  34. bucrightoff Says:

The sign that Lovie and Licht are failures is players they’ve jettisoned have outperformed what they did here elsewhere, and the free agents they allowed to rob the team blind are all horrible except Verner who’s been ok (not very good as some suggest) and McDonald who was cheap and has also been ok (not grear).

If people want to keep Lovie and Licht, it’s on hopes and dreams. Reality so far suggests they’re terrible.

  35. The Buc Realist Says:

The nightmare has not even begun, This was what the Bucs looked like through the easy part of their schedule. What will happen not that the Bucs will play the tough part of the schedule??

  36. Patrick in VA Says:

@Realist – as a realist, you should know better than thinking that anyone is looking for wins the rest of the schedule. Bring on the tough part of the schedule so we can see how the players on the team now do in the scheme and how they handle their responsibilities. make no mistake, we’re deep, deep in to evaluation mode for next year

  37. flmike Says:

1-15 is a very real possibility…then what’s Snuffy gonna say?

  38. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Joe

I’ve noticed several posters talking about our draft picks…how many which rounds etc. Some of them seem pretty well informed.

I know this is not a rock and roll radio station where you field requests but I suspect I’m not alone in appreciating a nice piece explaining all of our draft options as they currently exist. You can inform us with your opinion on what the traded choices might mean. IE are they coming from crappy teams that will result in higher pics or teams like N.E. that traditionally select at the bottom of the round.

One thing we all know is that our own Buc picks will be very, very, high selections each round perhaps even #1 at this rate.

It’s all we have left to get excited about at this point Joe.

[Banned. Can’t behave? Gotta pay. Joe’s not a babysitter. — Joe]

  40. bucrightoff Says:

How can anyone say all we have to be excited for is the draft, when the guys running the draft have so far made consistently terrible personnel decisions? Cautiously optimistic should be the word, but excited? I’m way more afraid than I am excited.

There will be plenty of time to break down the draft once January hits. We don’t even know where the Bucs will pick yet so it is a bit fruitless until then.

  42. Patrick in VA Says:

@bro – I really don’t think that their personnel moves are as bad as you say. I’m fine with the draft last year. I’m fine with most FA moves aside from the MJ and AC deals. Granted, those were two of the bigger signings this offseason but otherwise, they had a pretty good offseason, I thought. I’m much more excited about building through the draft. I’d rather draft and teach instead of signing in FA and reteaching a player something new and different from what they were doing on another team where they obviously had success in the league because they were signed to a big money contract

  43. The Buc Realist Says:

    @joe

they will have a top three pick. Write it down Joe!

  44. Macabee Says:

  47. bucrightoff Says:

Patrick, building through the draft probably not happening this off-season. Lovie’s job will be on the line next year (even if many of us want him fired now, the Glazers are not admitting a spectacular failure after 1 year). And as such, Lovie’s going for win now next year, which means more FAs coming. Lovie doesn’t trust rookies and he will not play them if he can get vets instead. It’s been his MO his entire coaching career. Young guys do not get love from Lovie, only vets.

  48. RastaMon Says:

Hey L&L said they were going for the post season this year…so now we are supposed to believe them again after watching football that is actually worse than the record…after all the records show a “L” what they have put on the field as much much worse that an “L”

  49. ihateloviesmith Says:

I just hope they fire this clown asap and his dirtbag coordinators. and I am at the point after 37 years of futility with this abortion of an NFL club that they sell their sorry asses and bring in a new team and ownership. foff bucs you suck and have always sucked and you will probably suck till the end of time. lovie you need to find a job you are good at, like sucking!

  50. Brent Says:

How come McCoy, Arians, pettin, marrone. How come none of their teams got worse when they came in? At this point, I see Lovie getting at least 2 years and I’ll sit back and watch. But stop with all the excuses. He deserves criticism. Like joe said he picked staff, fa, scheme and halfway in we’re worse. At his specialty, defense, were dead last. If youre a Lovie fan just man up and accept he’s failed to this point.

  51. jo_mama Says:

Lovie is the Smartest guy in Tampa.

If I am not mistaken, his contract is guaranteed, so if he gets fired he gets paid.

He looked at Schanio last year busting his butt to find a way to get wins and he ended up getting fired and got a paid one year vacation.

Lovie looked at that and said “I can beat that”, he is sucking on purpose so he can get a 4 year paid vacation.

    Smart Lovie, Smart

  52. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Joe

There will be plenty of time to break down the draft once January hits. We don’t even know where the Bucs will pick yet so it is a bit fruitless until then.

It’s your blog and so I respect and defer to your opinion. But fruitless or not it’s ALL we have at this point. And let’s be consistent. If we’re going to eliminate draft talk until January I hope that also means a Jameis moratorium. 🙂

  53. Buc1987 Says:

Lovie’s getting paid no matter what. So perhaps he wants to run this team down even further and keep spending the Glazer’s money.

It’s all part of an evil plan to avenge the firing of Tony Dungy!

That’s my one and only conspiracy I can come up with as to why the team sucks so badly.

  54. Buc1987 Says:

    StPeteBucsFan Says:

“If we’re going to eliminate draft talk until January I hope that also means a Jameis moratorium.”

THAT’S not going to happen. I’ve been dreaming of this kid in the Bucs huddle since the 3rd game of last season. If the possibility is out there, and I can’t believe my eyes that it still is. They HAVE to take him. It’s either that or me and 30,000 or so Buc-FSU fans won’t buy tickets next season. It’s that simple and the Glazers can do the math.

  55. Buc1987 Says:

And no the Glazers would have never pressured coaches for the likes of Tebow just to sell tickets when they thought they had their golden boy Josh Freeman at the time.

So anyone with that thought can just file that into the garbage. If this team picks between 1-3. I predict that they WILL draft Jameis. Some of you are just going to have pound sand over it. What’s the difference though, you pound sand all day now anyways.

  56. bucrightoff Says:

1987, don’t put the cart before the horse. You have to be the ringleader of the Fire Lovie Mob to get Jameis. Lovie is not drafting Jameis, don’t use hope and don’t use the Glazers. Lovie makes the decisions, you know this. And you know he isn’t gambling on crab legs. So if you want Jameis, shout loudly for Lovie to go, otherwise it has a -100% chance of happening.

  57. buddhaboy Says:

YEah, but Lovie said….”But we were 4-12.” What is he gonna say after this year.

  58. Tye Says:

At 1st glance I thought the head line said:

    Lovie is a nightmare!

To that I would agree whole heartedly to no end….

My 1st thought upon hearing that Lovie Smith was hired was; {UGH!}, this isn’t going to end well….. I have long thought Lovie was overrated and wasn’t the “brilliant” “guru” of a HC that people want to believe him to be… The bears gave him every opportunity (9 years) to grow and become good but they finally saw he was who he has become and that wasn’t good enough so they fired him… He comes to Tampa and basically continues to do the same things, the same ways, with the same mindset…

Being a fan of this team is becoming brutal!

  59. buddhaboy Says:

yup agreed Tye. i no longer am wasting sundays on this. I will record and watch at my leisure. Getting out and enjoying the beautiful florida weather , and then watching bucs when sun goes down .

  68. mike h Says:

DB55 yup! and this is a business the glazers. and they w ould not be paying 2 or 3 coaches if they hired them without guaranteed money u think they would learn by now. cuz at worse we should have atleast 3 wins write now and this team is acting like the coach sleep walking!

Nope, that would have been last year for a compensatory pick. But then the Bucs went wild in FA and that pick was lost. It’s sort of complicated to figure out but it involves players lost and players added. Had we done nothing in FA I think we would have gotten a 4th or 5th round compensatory pick.

    @buc87

Again I appreciate your passion but…They HAVE to take him. It’s either that or me and 30,000 or so Buc-FSU fans won’t buy tickets next season.

LMAO and you’ll be joined by another several hundred thousand who won’t buy tickets regardless of who the Bucs draft. After the hype and TOTAL failure this year Buc fans are going to be totally skeptical.

Although I’m totally against drafting your guy I will absolutely concede your point that he would sell tickets and jerseys. If all we’re talking about is money then I surrender to you. Jameis is going to sell tickets and jerseys wherever he goes. Let’s hope it doesn’t end up like Ray Rice with folks getting to swap them back for another jersey at no cost.

Well, the way I see it, we might be able to salvage 6-10 or 7-9 out of this nightmare

This game is winnable, we can do this, our defense is playing well, we just need our offense to step up
