Bucs Sprung A Leak

Joe knows he’s going to get slapped around for this, but what the hell. Here goes:
The Bucs defense played solid ball Sunday. Yes, the Vikings’ final, tying drive in the fourth quarter was a kick in the nuts. Still, Joe was impressed with what the defense did as a whole.
When a defense holds any NFL team to 13 points in regulation, it should win. As Lovie Smith likes to say, “Simple as that.”
Rather than the defense stinking, it has been the offensive line that has gone in the tank, specifically pass blocking. The cracks in the damn have been and exposed and it seems as if the floodgates have opened for opposing defenses, Twitters Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.
Bucs’ offensive line has allowed 10 sacks in their last two games, matching Bills for most by any NFL team in its last two games.

This is downright scary. We all know Bucs starting quarterback Mike Glennon can be elusive, but no one except those doing shots of tequila all morning will confuse him with Roger Staubach.
Sunday, Bucs left tackle Anthony Collins simply got worked over time and again on swim moves by Everson Griffen to the inside. You don’t think the Browns will be trying to expose Collins with that move each and every pass play?
Joe hopes Bucs offensive line coach George Warhop can find a way to help Collins not get used by a swim move so badly.

The O-line was better before Lovie came here and blew it up. Considering how the O-line played last year, that’s quite an achievement on Lovie’s part.

I want to clearly go on the record when I was absolutely annihilated over questioning the Mankins trade. He has been a below average lineman thus far on a terrible line. I’ve never once seen that “leadership” or “tenacity” that he supposedly was going to bring. We’ve lost a fourth round pick (which we really could use now) and now are on the hook for an overage linemen at a rather high salary.

The Bears consistently had one of the worst OLines in the league when Lovie was there. He needs to change his approach there

Now lets turn the tables, we just gave up on a 7th overall pick only in his third season? Yes, without question he was one of the weaker guys on our defense, but he didn’t have a bloated salary (less than $1m this season). Yet when we gave up the same pick for a 32 year old has-been in Mankins Licht is a genius? This is dumping undeveloped talent for pennies.

it was a $hit show on offense. does not mean our defense played well.
they played just well enough for me not to watch anymore this year.

It’s not like the Vikes are anything but a low tier NFL has been team. They are losers just like the Bucs. Maybe more of an upside, but I don’t even see that. No excuse for the Bucs losing this game at home. Absolutely none!

Totally agree with Joe. The bye week was positive for the defense. The offense well that is another story. Glennon totally regressed.
Joe you should do a survey on whether or not to pick a QB on the 1st round.

The defense played “well” because Teddy Smallhands isn’t any good. If we got the same Roethlesberge Indy got last week, we would have allowed 700 yards and 8 TDs. Defense is still the single worst unit in the league, by far.

I was really hoping Barron figured it out. Just did not live up to that top 10 status he was drafted as. He was hard hitter, that was about it. Put a nice lick on that big mouth POS Steve Smith though. 🙂

Which safety would you rather have:
1 Sack, 3 Int, 1 FR and 62 Tackles?
OR
2 Sacks, 2 Int, 1 FR and 70 Tackles?
First stat is John Lynch in 2001 (and statistically right where he performed his whole career)
Second is Mark Barron last year.
Now am I saying Barron is as good as Lynch? NOT. EVEN. CLOSE. But Strong Safeties primarily perform run support and are the “hard hitters” of the secondary. Look at Lynch or Polamalu. These guys are not turnover creating machines, that’s not their role. THe problem is the Bucs have been running Barron primarily at FS this year, a role he is not suited for (alot of this is due to Goldstons weakness on pass defense as well) Barron is NOT living up to his draft status but he is not a bad player either

Barron actually improved quite a bit compared to what he showed last season in pass coverage. He’ll never be a ball hawk free safety, but he was decent this year. A lot better than goldson.

The Bucs got an Italian sub for Barron. For Casillas, it was only the equivalent of chips and a soda. So for a defensive starter and a role player, they got a lunch combo.

@ RealityCheck- Then look at Earl Thomas for example, modern SS that has very similar statistical line to Barron. Is Barron as good as him? Not at all, I’m just saying he wasn’t a total bust and still had time to develop.

The offensive line was not great last year and your are delusional if you think so. Both Davin Joseph and Donald Penn were getting abused last year. the Bucs were only able to run effectively in three games last year, all home games against New Orleans, Atlanta and Miami.
