Smells Like Glennon

From the words and body language of Bucs acting offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo today, it sure seems like QB Josh McCown won’t be ready to play Sunday.

Of course, the Bucs love to go all high school espionage when it comes to quarterbacks. Will Mike Glennon start Sunday? Or how about Josh McCown?

Lovie Smith, as if 17-year olds are playing defense for the Vikings, coached by part-time guys who may have never taken a snap of college football, loves to play it coy.

Just a hunch, but Joe’s pretty sure the Vikings have ample video on both quarterbacks and have also faced mobile quarterbacks who turn the ball over, as well as stagnant quarterbacks who don’t run. Not sure how the Bucs are going to hoodwink the Vikings here (Hint: the Vikings beat McCown and the Bears last year).

McCown worked with the second-team offense in the 30-minute window of practice open to the pen and mic club today, per Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune.

In his weekly press conference, acting offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, of course, wouldn’t say anything definitive, but if body language and words can be used as a barometer, it sure doesn’t seem like McCown will start Sunday.

“Looked like he is getting to the point where he is getting comfortable,” Arroyo said. “Every day is going to be a better day for him to get under center and take snaps and see what feels best. If there aren’t any hindrances, then we can take steps to move forward.”

Just watching Arroyo speak, much less his words, it did not advance the notion of a coach confident a player is ready to play Sunday.vAgain, no official word yet, and Joe doesn’t expect any definitive word until Sunday, but Joe would be surprised if Glennon is on the bench.

Additionally, here is what Bucs center Evan Dietrich-Smith said about Glennon today before practice:

“Mike’s been playing QB for us, he’s doing a good job and he’s gonna be out there Sunday.”

Who cares both are average to below average players for the position. But mine as well roll with Glennon at least he has a slim chance to get better at this stage of his career.

This is a big game for Glennon if he plays well and we win he more or less likely stays the starting qb. If he sucks and plays like how he did against Baltimore mccown will be back in there at Cleveland.

  2. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie won’t commit to saying who the starting QB will be until the last moment. Sly one aint he? I guess he does not want to piss off angry fans any worse than they are now. Too earlly to tell in his way of thinking. Shhh, it’s a secret.

*Glennon has a chance to get better at this stage in his career. ^

The “slim” adjective in your post refers to the limited ability to see that the O-Line was garbage against Baltimore, and Glennon couldn’t get a clean pocket.

Glennon can play, the “slim” chance is our O-Line and D-Line doing GOOD/AVERAGE things.

Hopefully the offensive line shows up before halftime this week.

  5. Tom Edrington Says:

How effective would McCown be after such a long layoff if he totally sucked after months and months of preparation going into the season?

  6. SteveK Says:

Can our “offensive” and defensive line play up to at least league average.

Up to this point, their results have been Charles Barkely “knuckle headed turrible”.

I like mike glennon. but, the way the offensive line has been playing it is more suited to mccown. I remember watching chris simms get thrown/shoved to the ground and having emergency spleen surgery. I don’t want to see that happen to MG. mccown is mobile. he should be able to escape trouble more easily than MG.
why not let mccown earn his starting salary pay check. the season appears to be over anyway.let MG come in next year. looks like TB is going to be drafting in the top 5 next spring. maybe MG will get a good o-lineman or a burner at WR.

    @stevek,

I’m not arguing with you, because I’ve been saying for a while now our OL doesn’t give much of an opportunity for success for any QB, let alone a immobile QB like Glennon. However, I wonder how much responsibility Glennon has as far as calling out pass protection, and changing it at the line of scrimmage. I know Freeman was terrible at that, and it really seems as if Glennon doesn’t make many adjustments either. Perhaps he doesn’t have that freedom, but I highly doubt that’s the case. Fact is, he gets blitzed repeatedly, and he is at least partially responsible to make sure he’s got his blockers in position to protect him. Again, obviously when our guys get beat one on one snap after snap that’s not on him, but it may also be fair to blame him for some of the protection issues on other plays. Just food for thought.

The problem with McCown is he holds on to the ball way too long for this offensive line. He doesn’t throw guys open, he throws them the ball when they are open. Big difference. He just doesn’t have that much time to do that. He is mobile, but he’s not Cam Newton by any stretch. He also seemed very scared to throw the deep ball. I see a better possibility for success with Glennon, but fact of the matter is, neither is probably going to do great. As much as we want to hope Glennon is going to be the next Peyton Manning, the fact of the matter is we’d be lucky for him to be the next Andy Dalton. And that’s best case scenario.

no doubt a defensive coordinators nightmare. Who will it be? Glennon or McCown? Just another sleepless night for George Edwards.

    Melman it is then.

port richey george…Glennon needs to stay in because he’s proved nothing yet to anyone.

  14. Zam Says:

Ulch… i find Glennon so boring after having to wade through 13 games last year and now 3 and a half this year. I just resent the Bucs for making me have to watch him over and over again.

  15. Bucfan4life Says:

Hilarious that Lovie is being secretive about the QB situation. Everyone is circling the Bucs on the calendar as an easy win. A big reason for that is that one of these two guys are going to be starting for the Bucs. They are not concerned about either one!

  16. Hawk Says:

    @ HawaiianBuc

Protection assignments used to be the responsibility of the center. Do the Bucs do it differently?

  17. buccinfan Says:

If lovie wanted McCown to start he wouldve already named him the starter. Just like he did when he bout him in and called him his guy. I must admit i get charlie christ and lovie smith confused sometimes..
