The Decision

October 22nd, 2014

McCownGlennonThe call at starting quarterback may not come for days. Josh McCown is healthy, yet Lovie Smith says Mike Glennon provides “a lot of hope.”

Joe suspects Lovie would be happy to keep the Vikings and Mike Zimmer thoroughly confused up until kickoff Sunday.

Yes, Lovie will be pounded with starting QB questions this afternoon at his news conference. Don’t get your hopes up, Mike Glennon Mob. While most fans, including Joe, see no logical reason for the McCown Experiment to resume Lovie may not agree.

Former Buccaneer Ryan Nece was pounding the drum in support of McCown on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday, while former GM Charley Casserly told the local radio audience that Glennon is the only wise choice because he’s a better quarterback. Even the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig, revealed yesterday that he fully supports Glennon over McCown for the rest of 2014. Former Bucs QB Shaun King believes Lovie might play QB by committee.

“The Decision” may not rival the silliness of LeBron James’ made-for-TV stunt a few years ago, but expect Lovie to be more than happy to keep the drama alive.

The Lil Pup fully supports MG8 over McCown? I renounce my membership from the Glennon Mob.

  2. DB55 Says:

Mccown starts and embarrasses himself yet again.

  3. rayray1 Says:

Lovie will stubbornly go back to J McCown. I’d rather see M Glennon the rest of the year. So we can verify if in fact he has potential going forward or we need to go in a different direction. However, I don’t believe J McCown had a fair shake with the round robin O line he had to work with the first 3 games.

    Glennon is the only choice.

  6. Adrian Says:

Glennon has to continue to start unless he proves otherwise.

  7. Skyline Crew Says:

If McCown starts I will not follow the game. I’ll read about it on Monday.

  8. billy buckaroo Says:

Lovie has 5 million reasons why to play McCown

  9. RastaMon Says:

Lovies indiscision premeates this football organization. If he thinks he is fooling the opponents game plan…..he isonly fooling himself

  10. OneLove Says:

I don’t understand what all this drama is about. If Lovie chooses McCown(which I hope he doesn’t) it’s not like Belichek choosing Bledsoe over Brady.

I also don’t think that Lovie’s trying to play any mind games. Does anyone really think that either QB is going to change Minnesota’s defensive game plan??? No, because they both suck.

  11. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Vikings game plan will be the same regardless of who starts…bull rush Bucs OL, stop run game, disrupt pocket. The only real difference is whether the result is sack (Glennon) or interception (McCown)

  12. Skyline Crew Says:

Sure it would change the game plan. McCown would throw 3-4 interceptions and walk around stomping. Glennon gives us the best chance to win. Not McCown. By starting McCown the coach would be saying I don’t care about the season and I’m purposely tanking it.

  13. ToesOnTheLine Says:

At least with Glennon playing the Bucs receivers will have more catches, yards, and TD’s than the Vikings secondary if McCown plays.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

Are the Bucs playing this Sunday? or Are they just going to get dressed up and impersonate football players again?

  15. Architek Says:

Does it really matter if you don’t or can’t put up resistance to the opposing team?

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not starting McCown would be admitting that Lovie & Licht made a mistake.
Starting McCown would put extreme unecessary pressure on bot McCown & Lovie.

The safe choice would be to stick with Glennon…..the surprising choice would be to platoon….

I don’t have a clue what Lovie will do…..but I would start Glennon until and if he shows he can’t do the job.

  17. DB55 Says:

Honestly, does anyone really care anymore? I never would have imagined that Lovie Smith would make this team a bigger joke than Morris and schiano combined. I’m just going through the motions at this point.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

DB55…during the Ravens game I swore that was Raheem dressed up as Lovie roaming the sidelines.

  19. RastaMon Says:

I can’y believe how excited I was walking into the Ray Jay for the season opener……”Busted, down on Bourbon Street, Set up, like a bowlin’ pin.
Knocked down, it get’s to wearin’ thin. They just won’t let you be, oh no.”
    Grateful Dead…”Truck’n”

  20. Buc1987 Says:

RastaMon … I miss the Grateful Dead. Saw the best concert in the old Sombero the year Jerry died. One of the best memories of my life.

  21. TAC Says:

I don’t see any big decision between either one starting. It really doesn’t matter that much in the game planning. It isn’t like there is a huge difference, with the only thing being McCown may be a little more mobile, but his decision making is off the charts stupid, Sorry Josh fan mobsters, those were some very stupid plays he made, even under serious pressure.

Glennon needs to play, jut to see what is there for the long term. Could have trade value for a desperate team in the next couple of years if nothing else.

Should know at the end of the year if a high draft QB is needed if Glennon starts the rest of the year, will always be a question mark, or they have already made the decision it McCown starts.

  22. TAC Says:

    ToesOnTheLine Says:

“The only real difference is whether the result is sack (Glennon) or interception (McCown)”

    Right on the money, lol.

  23. phil Says:

Glennon gives us a chance to win. But winning doesn’t help us get Jameis Winston. McCown should start.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ DB55

Yes…..some of us still care….”for better, for worse” “with or without injuries’ and especially after taking an a$$ whipping…..I have way too much invested in time, emotion (season ticke holder 1976) and merchandise to give up on the Bucs now….also, don’t want to change my moniker……

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ 87

Don’t display any “abnormal” behavior today!!!

  26. DB55 Says:

    87

Since Lovies first PC I was like – he looks like an older version of Raheem. Then I thought I was just being racist. Lol

  27. mark Says:

The way the team plays, it shouldn’t make much of a difference.

Kind of like asking if I was to cross the ocean would it be better to take the Titanic or Hindenburg.

  28. DB55 Says:

    Tbbucfan

Same here minus the season tickets. And 87 has always been abnormal since birth. Oooooo Burn!

  29. Zam Says:

    McCown plays.

If he does well, keep him and trade Glennon.
If he does poorly, keep Glennon and cut McCown.

    Then draft Mariota.

    Simple.

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

I love the Bucs and the Grateful Dead too.

  31. BucFan20 Says:

Be fun to see them both in at the same time and guess who’s going to get the snap. The run game is for crap so far. At least EDS might get to one of them.

  32. RastaMon Says:

Saw the Dead at the Lakeland Civic Center May 77….
of course I “still care” about the Bucs…I have and have had ST’s all but early 80’s…that said I am older and wiser now….I see things as they are…not as I hope they’ll be next game…after pulling myself off the floor from the previous Sundays loss, definition of a fan.
That said……this is BY FAR the most dysfunctional chapter in Buccaneer history

  33. DB55 Says:

    Rastamon

I thought you wrote you’ve had STD’s since the 80s. Yikes! Lmao

  34. Buc1987 Says:

Definition of a true blue “Bucs” fan I would say.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

“NFL FINES TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS FOR NOT WARNING WOMEN AND CHILDREN OF IMPENDING MASACRE AT RAVENS GAME”

Coach Lovie Smith responded: “We thought we’d keep that a secret until after the game in order to confuse our opponent and fans”

  37. RastaMon Says:

To clarify…I had ST’s before the early 80’s…0-26 days too….STD’s…in the Nam…syringe the size of a popcicle full of white penicillin is what it took….but of she was half French and half Vietnamese….oh… that night in Saigon…Ohhhh

and Yikes Rastmon I’m in pain just thinking about it…

  40. gatrbuc17 Says:

Im sorry but Lovie is a complete idiot if he goes back to McCown and I will boycott the rest of the season. This coming from a Bucs fan that sat through EVERY HOME GAME FOR THE FIRST 20 YEARS!!!!!

  41. biff barker Says:

    Joe suspects Lovie would be
    happy to keep the Vikings
    and Mike Zimmer thoroughly
    confused up until kickoff.
    —————-
Better the Bucs stop confusing themselves Joe. The secrecy games have led us nowhere. How can Lovie and staff expect to surprise anyone when their own team can’t or won’t grasp the system?

Players need to focus on and execute their assignment. Just line up and play smash mouth football.

The Bucs need to dig deep and get a home win Sunday.

  42. gatrbuc17 Says:

Josh McCown this yr 3 starts, 2 TDs, 4INTs
Mike Glennon this yr 3 starts 7 TDs, 3 INTs

Im not a Head Football Coach but it seems like a no brainer to me.
Lovie just can’t admit to us that he made a 5 million dollar mistake

  43. Patrick Says:

What would be the point in starting McCown? His career is almost over and what good would come out of starting him over a young quarterback who is showing some promise? McCown has been below average for 12 seasons and it’s insane to believe that he’ll play any different. Glennon deserves to be the starting QB for the rest of 2014.

  44. Skyline Crew Says:

Zam, ESPN had an interesting piece about a crazy draft day scenario. If Oakland has the #1 pick the Eagles could trade with them to get Mariotta. Chip and Oregon still have ties. Also, Mariotta fits perfect in their game plan and if Foles doesn’t work out they could trade him out. I would rather have Mariotta than Jameis Winston all day everyday. I think we could get a Receiver or nice pass rusher in the 1st rd and see if we can snag Prescott in the 2nd.

  45. RastaMon Says:

Last year and Raheems last year…my ST acct manager….would send me polls about gameday..but also when critical mass was heating up ..send polls about game day/coaching…tactfully phrased…crickets……so far…I really think the G’Boyz are STUNNED !..and pissed at themselves….Lovie the Cat Herder….

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“The call at starting quarterback may not come for days. Josh McCown is healthy, yet Lovie Smith says Mike Glennon provides “a lot of hope.”

    That was 7 days ago.

  47. RastaMon Says:

“How can Lovie and staff expect to surprise anyone when their own team can’t or won’t grasp the system?”……..Ok…..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtGxusvUT3k

  48. BuccoDav Says:

If Lovie truly believes keeping the QB a secret until gameday will confuse the Vikings, as Joe suggests, then someone needs to remind Lovie that Leslie Frazier is no longer their head coach. Hes here confusing our defense…

  49. ElioT Says:

Q:How many F**KS does Zimmer give about who plays QB for the Bucs on Sunday?

    A: ZERO F**KS…

    It’s not like they’re choosing from P.Manning or M. Vick Circa ’04.

Sad part is, it’s about their best shot at a competitive advantage..

    Meh…

    Go Sucs!

  50. HawaiianBuc Says:

I cannot see him starting McCown. There’s just too much pressure from the outside to even let him be tempted to start McCown. If he doesn’t say anything, to me that says he’s sticking with Glennon, which is unquestionably the right decision (unless of course McCown goes all 2013 Chicago on us). If he does start McCown, he is really setting himself up for even more criticism if McCown fails. He doesn’t exactly have unanimous support from the fans at this point, so if he McCown fails, it’s going to get really really ugly. He and Muschump will be competing for the most hated man in Florida.

  51. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie or Muschamp can never be the most hated man in Florida. They’re coaches, you can want them fired, but not hate them. That hate word goes to charlatan’s further up the state of Florida’s ladder.

  52. Buctebow Says:

Lovie will start Melman without a doubt. McClown will be coaching again.

  53. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Buccfan37,

I don’t know about that. Back in the day, there was a basketball coach named Don Devoe at the University of Florida. During his first season, one in which he kicked most of the thugs off the team, he received so many death threats he had to move his wife and 3 kids out of their house. I know this because they stayed at our house. And keep in mind, that wasn’t even football.

Buc1987 – while better than never having seen the Dead – that 1995 show at Tampa Stadium was a pretty pitiful example of what was possible to experience at a Grateful Dead concert.

Saw the Dead at the Lakeland Civic Center May 77….

RastaMon – Now THAT was a real Dead show. The whole ’77 tour was the shiz…

    ——————————————————-

IMO – if Lovie decides to bench Glennon in favor of McCown – he’s gonna really see what an apathetic and pissed off fan base looks like. There is no reason on God’s green earth (short of a Glennon injury) for Josh McCown to ever throw another pass for the Buccaneers. I was on board with seeing what McCown could do to start the season due to his experience, what he showed last year and because he did look better in camp and preseason games than Glennon. But after watching both QBs play roughly 3 games each so far this year – there is no question in my mind that Glennon gives us a better chance to “Win NOW” – Ha – plus we really need to gauge how much Glennon can progress over the course of the rest of this season to determine if a QB should be drafted in the 1st round or in a later round next year.
