Brooks: Glennon Took Two Steps Backward

October 20th, 2014

mike glennon 0929

The premier living Bucs icon, Mr. Derrick Brooks, was very troubled by what he saw last week.

Joe already shared Brooks’ passionate critiques of the Bucs’ defense. But it didn’t stop there.

Brooks, who had given Mike Glennon a grade of “C, C-“ prior to the beating by the Ravens, thought Glennon regressed significantly against Baltimore. He shared his takes with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig, of WDAE-AM 620.

“And, you know, the quarterback this game took two steps backwards,” Brooks said. “Throwing off the back foot, not stepping into throws, depending more on his arm than his technique in critical situations where he has to deliver the ball because there’s a window to the deliver the ball. But he can’t do it with the technique that he was doing throwing off his back [foot], not getting settled in the pocket. And we gotta run the ball better.”

So did Glennon play scared? Duemig asked.

“I won’t never say a grown man is scared. I’ll just say this; he didn’t trust the protection at times,” Brooks said. “And, at times as a quarterback, there are times when you got to stand tall, deliver the ball, and take a lick for doing it. So he wasn’t able to do that.”

Joe ingested a sedative this weekend and re-watched the Bucs-Ravens game. No, it wasn’t a good day for Glennon, despite padding his stats with the game out of reach. But Glennon sure didn’t get much help in the first half.

Somehow, the Bucs snapped back to win in Pittsburgh after getting clobbered in Atlanta. That elasticity is the only thing keeping Joe hopeful about Sunday and the Vikings. And the fact the Vikings are bad.

  1. phil Says:

Of course Suggs had a lot to do with. To me he is the last guy you would want to run into a back alley somewhere. Very scary dude. After missing out on Johnny Football we should do everything we can to get Jameis Winston. We also need to get rid of this coaching staff.

  2. SteveK Says:

If Glennon took “two steps backwards” then the O-Line and D “fell flat on their ass”.

Is Glennon a superstar, no way, but c’mon Brooks! Give Glennon a clean pocket, and he’s money.

After the Falcons last two weeks, Matt Ryan is the 4th best QB in the division?

It’s hard to judge our QB position, when the OLine and DLine can’t hold up at even a league average level of play.

Nice try Brooks, I get that Glennon still has a lot to prove, but he’s been playing better than those around him.

  3. SteveK Says:

Where is GMC and the sack numbers? Our D is a joke. I saw that Von Niller and Elvis Dumervil EACH have 7 sacks apiece. Do the Bucs even have 7 sacks on the year?

  4. BFFL Says:

Stop talking about the offense. We have to send a message to Bucs management that defense is what wins games..just look at Seattle this year versus last year. I’m tired of watching crap defense. Stop drafting receivers in the first round and focus on positions that actually contribute to wins.

  5. SteveK Says:

Our Defense is 32nd ranked, and possibly on schedule to be the worst ever. What the hell is that, paying Michael Johnson for sub- Clayborn play, and GMC making QB money.

If GMC needs “help” then so does Glennon.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Brooks needs to stick to analysis of linebackers….we have Shaun King who can critique our QBs….

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  7. DavidM Says:

Umm wasn`t this the game were Glennon was smacked liked every freaken down. Honestly I think Glennon is toward the end of the list of things that need to be fixed.

  8. bucrightoff Says:

The offense has taken a step forward this season compared to last (even with a worse offensive line and running game), even if you don’t like or want Glennon as QB, that much cannot be disputed. The defense has taken 5 steps backwards and might not even have hit rock bottom yet. We need to focus on the real issues, and Glennon is somewhere near the bottom. That doesn’t mean he’s great, it means we have a ton of other, more pressing issues.

  9. Nybucsfan Says:

Lol never Glennons falt the MGM always pointing the finger at someone but him. I got news for you he stinks

  10. DallasBuc Says:

What makes DB think Glennon or any other QB should trust this protection? I am no Glennon mob member and agree that he threw off his back foot way too damn much but once again this oline was demolished play and play out. There is no way you can reasonably expect to run or pass against that front seven of Baltimore with this inept oline.
To make things worse, the fevered egos of do-no-wrong Lovie and his lapdog Licht will not allow them to admit their woeful mistakes with the oline and Warhop.

  11. DallasBuc Says:

Phil- we did not miss out on Manziel. We chose not to take him. Big difference.

  12. Robert 9 Says:

he was being gang tackled before he turned to throw.

brooks, please shut it before you become another shaun king. thanks for your service, but sometimes you come across as a moran.

  13. NewTampaChris Says:

Can you imagine what we would all have thought if you laid out this scenario in the preseason? That the NFC South leader would be 3-3-1 after seven games yet the Bucs stunk so bad that fans STILL didn’t think they had a shot to win the division?

  14. flmike Says:

If Glennon took two steps back it will show this week, not during that game. If he truly regressed, it will be evident in the next few games. No one would have survived behind that line that game. On a happy note if we come into the draft with a top 5 or better pick at least we’ll get Mariota, and if we’re really lucky, maybe we’ll swing a trade with the 49ers and get Harbaugh for Lovie. A man can dream can’t he…

  15. BucsQcCity Says:

I’m starting to think we need at least more evidence that Glennon is the guy. Let him play until the end of the year. Last week he was the second coming of McCown with these goofy back foot throws

  16. tmaxcon Says:

what’ the mob going to do now…. LOL…

  17. knucknbuc Says:

Mgm is so crazy they’re turning on the greatest player ever to play for this franchise. Brooks was speaking objectively about Glennon and was fair in his criticism god forbid Glennon be held accountable for his terrible play that day to. Right Mgm?

He was throwing off his back foot and his footwork worse terrible and his decisions were even worse that day. Nothing wrong with saying that Glennon gets a d- that day. Granted he was getting hammered and everyone played horrible. I see nothing wrong with Brooks saying this.

  18. John Herb Says:

I will always have great respect for Mr. D.B but COME ON MAN!!! It doesn’t matter who is the quarterback when the only thing your o line can stop is your own running backs progress. Then we have a Defence that gives up a TD on almost every possesion!! There is plenty of blame to go around but to single out MG is not right.

  19. Buccfan37 Says:

The MGM will remain steady in their resolve that the present starting QB has shown a lot of promise and has been one of the bright spots in the games played up to date. Brooks spill is sour grapes egging on his host’s dogged critique.

  20. Bucnjim Says:

First off Derrick is telling big dog what he wants to hear. (Criticism of Glennon) That is of course unless Brooks missed the entire first half of the game where our QB was eating a dirt sandwich after every play. The Ravens dominated our line so bad Glennon barely had two steps before getting punched in the mouth. On the other side of the ball Flacco had a cocktail party back there before throwing the ball to wide open receivers. Both our lines are the majority of the problem. If you can’t control the line of scrimmage you won’t win any games. Ask the SAINTS!

  21. LJ'sDaddy Says:

Phil….no no no no Jameis…He is Freeman toxic! Poison!

  22. Patrickbucs Says:

I was at the Lions-Saints game yesterday, up there visiting family. It was nice to watch. Real football game for a change this year.

I hope Glennon has a big game coming off the bye week, he and we need it.

  23. Patrick in VA Says:

That so many of you think that there is a single point of failure is disheartening. It shows that you don’t understand the team nature of the game. We aren’t 1 player away from having a good team. We have a team that doesn’t understand its assignments, both on offense and defense, and we have multiple severely sub-par players. We need to build both lines. We’re not where we need to be up front on both sides of the ball so talking about skill position players is way premature. we need the foundation of the team in place before we can think about being a FA or a single draft pick away from competing.

  24. Phillip Says:

Coming from someone who can’t spell moron…

Anyway DB is absolutely money on his analysis. Glennon chose to throw off his back foot and not trust his protection… I completely get why to an extant when the line is getting blown up play after player… BUT there was times when he could have stood tall made the throw(whether it was caught or not doesn’t matter) but chose to eat a sack instead or throw off his back foot… Or run out of bounds for a loss..

And for the morons questioning Brooks because he played LB… You don’t think LB’s study QB throwing habits? They can’t tell whether they have good mechanics or not? When the O-line protected for him and didn’t make the throw?

He made a living off reading the QB eye’s and being one of the smartest players out on the field… He’s also not blind

  25. bob in valrico Says:

the only quarterbacks in the league that right now are manning, romo and
rogers that I would call clean pockets.the rest have to work with they have.
o lines takes years of drafting and building to develop.MG is tough but has
not been able to handle the pressure so far in his young career. Some of the lack of offense is on him. on one play 2 receivers are running down the same sideline.the deep one was wide open the short was covered mg completed the pass to short receiver and he was tackled. When MG has the time he has to make the right decisions.he needs to sustain long drives in first half.you cant win if you dont score.

  26. warrenfb12 Says:

Im not blindly supporting Glennon here, I am all for tanking and drafting famous Jameis. But how is Glennon supposed to step into throws when the line is getting beat that badly and so quickly?

  27. Bucnjim Says:

No Phillip it’s just curious that one of the best LB’s of all time has nothing to critique about one of the worst defenses of all time. Instead they are critiquing a QB that the Host of the show absolutely can’t stand. Also; the fact that Brooks has had nothing but good things to say about Glennon until he gets on big dogs show.

  28. NewTampaChris Says:

C’mon guys! On the long list of Bucs’ problem, QB play is not in the Top 3, maybe not the top 5. Winning QBs yesterday included Austin Davis, Blake Bortles (terrible game), Colt McCoy, Kyle Orton. Losers included Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton.

    Team game, fellas.

  29. Skyline Crew Says:

I’m cool with his opinion. I don’t think he took 2 steps back though. Sure he was throwing off his back foot, but like Brooks said he was getting pressured every play. At least the brightest spot on our team isn’t stepping as far back as everyone else.

  30. stevek Says:

Laughable to see our QB, who is getting better, being torn down.

How about GMC, is he worth all of the money? C’mon, last placed defense, no sacks.

    Pathetic.

  31. willie d Says:

    Eric Page would fix this

  32. Bill T Says:

Like Glennon was the problem against Baltimore….that’s comical. See what you want to see.

  33. Architek Says:

You guys are smoking if you think your opinions carry more weight than a HOF.

  34. DB55 Says:

Glennon was scared. He’s taken big hits before, can’t say I blame him. Josh is already hurt, who replaces them? What if kafka gets hurt too?

  35. Robert 9 Says:

    what a moran, he bit.

    fish on! lol

thanks mr spell checker phillip. I still think brooks was out of line. of course he took 2 steps back and then got flattened. if you want to criticize, then criticize the O line, criticize calling deep routes, criticize the playcalling….maybe then get around to Glennon. lol

    what a maroon.

  36. Buccfan37 Says:

Not more weight, but the same weight.

  37. Phillip Says:

    @Bucnjim

He already said it was bad on defense? A couple articles on here about Brooks saying we are playing bad defense I believe…

Also QB is the MOST important position in the NFL, so they get the most credit/blame and most attention with questions… Especially when you have a QB that is so Jekyll and Hyde like Glennon…

The MGM just needs to stop complaining about people critiquing their chosen one… You answer the questions you are asked…

Winston is going to be a Ryan Leaf/JaMarcus Russell type of bust no doubt in my mind… Hundley and Mariota have the highest upside IMO… Personally been pulling for Hundley for 2 years now(not the only QB I was pulling for but for me the highest upside)…

  38. Luther Says:

Much respect for Brooks but Glennon was taking an absolute beating. The 1 interception was horrible but I thought the kid played a great considering he was taking shots that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. He needs to throw some shade on the defense for a change because those were not knocking over a feather the way Flacco was carving us up.

  39. stevek Says:

GMC should be let go, and we can pay Suh that kind of money. I bet he gets more sacks, plays better, and inspires the D to take it to another level.

If we want to point fingers, start with the most dissapointing aspect of our team, Lovie and his D.

  40. OneLove Says:

lol don’t hate on Derrick Brooks. He only speaks the truth. Mike Glennon is NOT the answer! Were either gonna trade him away(if he looks good against prevent defenses the rest of the year) or he’s going to be Marcus Mariota’s backup next season. I mean did you guys really believe Lovie when he said that Glennon was our “QB of the future”?? He’s lied about everything else, why would he be honest about Glennon!?

P.S. I’m already taking applications for the MMM (Marcus Mariota Mob)

  41. Phillip Says:

One of the MOST dumb comments I’ve EVER seen ^^^^

Guess someone didn’t watch GMC the past 2 years…

  42. Phillip Says:

Not at you Onelove sorry your comment came too quick 🙂

  43. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs have played some pretty good teams up to this point. Baltimore looks like an AFC title contender, New Orleans is always a tough opponent with Brees, St. Louis is tough laying a loss on Seattle, Carolina leads the NFC South despite the beatdown by the Packers, Atlanta and Pittsburgh are flaky yet the QB’s are capable of beating you. As bad as the Bucs have looked, an easier slate of games lay ahead. The next five games look like toss ups to me. I know it’s hard to envision the Bucs beating any of them, but I believe they will.

    Newsflash:

The Defense, O-Line, and coaching are all FAR WORSE at this point in the season than Glennon has been. Not even close, keep dreaming that a pretty bot QB is going to come out and save us. HA! You could not be more off base. Congratulations, you’re wrong, again.

  45. stevek Says:

    Phillip,

GMC looks good on the PFF spreadsheet, but what about the box score? Where are the impact plays? All I see is a D-Line getting man handled and abused.

Where is the real $12,000,000.00 DT?

  46. stevek Says:

    Phillip,

Glennon should be critiqued, but the criticisim should carry balance with the rest of the team.

You seriously think tha Glennon has been worse than our O-Line, or Defense? Both of those units are the laughing stock of the league.

Also, our pass D is so bad it may break the 95 year record for WORST ever, yes worse than the 2012 group of: LeQuan Lewis, Myron Lewis, EJ Biggers, and serial loafer Sean Jones. Just think about that.

I hope we draft a QB in the 1st round, and the truth will shine through: the QB does not get a chance to succeed because the O-Line and Defense are the worst in the NFL.

    It all starts up front.

  47. Phillip Says:

Once again you fail to realize the biggest thing in all of this… You answer the questions you are ASKED…. If they asked about the D-line or O-line I’m pretty sure Brooks wouldn’t hold back on them either… But since you have an awkward love affair with MG8 you continue to complain…

Also when has Suh gotten the Lions any wins recently? Aside from this season the Lions haven’t done sh!t since 2011… So don’t sit there and say Suh wins them games…

No one said anything about wanting Suh over GMC the past 2 years because he has been the better player PERIOD… Man fans literally have no loyalty to players… SMH

  48. OneLove Says:

    @stevek

    Newsflash:

Mike Glennon is inaccurate, immobile, and inconsistent! Yeah he’s had a few great drives(Just like Tim Tebow), but he hasn’t shown that he is the answer or that he should be our QB of the future.

I’m not saying that Marcus Mariota is going to come in here and save the day, but he COULD bail out our weak O line with his legs and he DEF has more upside than Glennon!

If your already convinced that Glennon is our QB of the future then you need to get b!tchslapped ASAP!!

  49. tmaxcon Says:

Settle down steveK what is your relationship with Glennon??? Brother / Sister etc…

How does turning a post about a QB having a bad day have anything to do with GMC???? It’s one thing to support your player but it’s foolish to defend every mistake by blaming a defensive player.

All the excuses and bs that flows on these pages defending Glennon just reenforces that everything has to be PERFECT for him to be successful. With today’s rules and the salary cap, I hate to break it to you but NO team will have All-Pro’s at every single position.

Arron Rogers is a perfect example. He has been getting KILLED for 3 years now because his line sucks. He still puts up numbers and finds a way to win games. Glennon can’t do that. He needs ALL-Pros at every single offensive position or excuse after excuse flows on these pages.

I can’t wait to see you guys go nuts when Lovie puts McCown back in. That should be a great day for reading comments!

Glennon is average to below average with a low upside based on lack of mobility. PERIOD!

Oh and by the way, brady’s line is sh*t and even he has been criticized first part of the year. If brady can be criticized so can Glennon.

    Thanks for the entertainment though!

  50. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Is Glennon perfect at QB, hell no. What is hilarious as that some of the same posters who bash Glennon and the “MGM” every opportunity they can are the same jackasses who earlier this season where pining for the Bucs to dump Glennon for Ryan Mallet and Kirk Cousins! Probably the same dolts insisting Brett Smith, Kafka, and McCown were far better QB’s than Glennon as well. Open your damn eyes and maybe you’ll see that Glennon is playing decent as a starting QB on this team…perhaps one of the few bright spots on this dysfunctional franchise that we continue to support.

  51. stevek Says:

    ToesOnTheLine,

    Exactly!

Where is the O-Line, and Defense? They are SUCKING!

How can Glennon step anywhere but backwards, when our O-Line is 5 tunrstyles?

  52. tmaxcon Says:

    ToesOnTheLine

Take away all the garbage time stats and I bet you would be signing a different tune. Glennon is no better than Cousins or Mallet at this stage. The O-Line has played much better for Glennon then they ever did for McCown so the jury is still out. Both Glennon and McCown stink.

I will say this, I do like McCown as a potential QB coach.

Bring on Saint Ritchie and Winston!

  53. tmaxcon Says:

you must apply the same bs excuses to McCown as you do with Glennon after all you guys keep crying about what is fair. face all 3 qb’s on the roster stink and so does the entire team and coaching staff minus LVD and GMC that is

  54. sho-nuff Says:

oh look brooks is talking *yawn….sorry, great p[layer, fabulous man…but an absolute bore to listen too…the dude says NOTHING…he is dead in the middle on every response…he would make a great politician….ooops sho nuff did it again unwilling to accept the narrative expecting something mildly deep…don’t get me started on your god dungy *eye roll

  55. Nybucsfan Says:

The MGM is crazy. They know more than brooks and I know it’s early every mock draft that’s out has the BUCS taken a QB. Why you ask cause ours suck its a QB drivin league and we are driving a pinto.

  56. bucrightoff Says:

Mariota is an Oregon QB. For reference, please check every Oregon QB from about 1995 on. Results = frightening and many busts.

  57. Trubucfan22 Says:

Lol at the MGM. They choose Glennon over the opinion of DERRICK BROOKS! Now brooks is also an idiot according to the MGM. So funny.

  58. SteveK Says:

    Trubucfan22,

Lol at your horse sh!t, you Freemanite.

Where is D Brooks’ opinion on the O-Line and Defense? We all know Big Pup620 is a Freemanite to the core, and will never give Glennon any due.

  59. SteveK Says:

    Nybucsfan,

So why did Cam, Matt Ryan and Bree’s all lose this weekend? Is it because their defenses suck slightly less than ours? Hmmm? It takes more than just a QB.

I hope we draft a QB in the 1st, and I’ll be waiting for all the excuses to pour in as to why he ain’t getting it done. It all starts up front.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

It’s hard to do all that much on offense when your team is down 28-0 in the first quarter and the Ravens D knows your going to be passing 90% of the time the rest of the game.

  61. Trubucfan22 Says:

    Derrick brooks: “Glennon played poorly”
MGM: “the defense sucks, that’s why Glennon played poorly”.

    MGM logic

  62. Stanglassman Says:

Take ALL of those excuses for Glennon and apply them to the first two 1/2 games McCown played. Not to mention the O-line is playing much better now.

  63. Trubucfan22 Says:

MGM gets all butt hurt just because someone says Glennon played bad. Which he did. The first half the entire team played like crap, including Glennon. But no let’s all just act like Glennon is the only player playing lights out, and the rest of the team is the reason Glennon sucked.

  64. Trubucfan22 Says:

87, that’s why it was important for Glennon and the offense to counter the Ravens scores. It’s not like the offense didn’t have the ball in the first quarter. Glennon got the ball back after each of the Ravens scores. The offense did nothing. As the QB it’s his offense. He is the leader. He didn’t do anything to get his team moving the ball.

  65. Buccfan37 Says:

Glennon did’nt embarrass the Bucs vs the ravens, he played up to his current potential. Yeah MG is a one man team. No QB would have withstood the rush the opponent displayed behind our leaky O line. That’s problem number one.

  66. Aubpierce Says:

Brooks you took more then two steps back your last year as a Buc.Stick to the defense something you used to know.By the way if you didn’t know it, you and Lynch, both great players in your era, would be both broke and suspended in this NFL.You can’t hit anybody, especially if you wear a Buc uniform.

  67. Bucfan77. Says:

Mr Brooks was placating the host of his show. Now , what does that say about the critic?

  68. Buc1987 Says:

Trubucfan22 …I guess you just choose to give the O-line a pass in that first quarter. Glennon didn’t have time to take one breath and 3-4 Ravens were on his ass.

Everyone else saw that but you.

  69. Buc1987 Says:

Trubucfan22 has this personal vendetta against Glennon and no one know why. Look at him on the attack left and right. Hatred runs deep I guess.

  70. Kingpin1 Says:

Derrick please stop acting like a know it all. Glennon has only played 1 season as a starter with a terrible team!!! Just because you are a hall of famer doesn’t make you an expert on how to play QB!

  71. buctebow Says:

I am not a Melman supporter and am not convinced that he will make it as a starter, but last game, most any QB in the league would have struggled with that kind of pressure in their face. I’ll give Melman a pass on the Ravens game, even though he looked awful.

  72. D-Rome Says:

…not getting settled in the pocket….

What pocket? I’m assuming Bucs uniforms have pockets because when it comes to the offense there was no pocket all day.

  73. Mr. Patrick Says:

Mr. Brooks need to put his criticism where it belongs, on his friend Lovie

  74. BuccDeez Says:

    @ warrenfb12 & @ phill

I agree , our Qb issues Suck. J McClown Sucks & MG8 is better but not NFC SOUTH starter material . Incognito would’ve helped mankins on the O-line. But i dont Famous JW is the answer for the Buccs. We need a REAL field General. U know, a pocket passer whom can scramble when needed 2 extend plays. A- la – Arron Rogers. Mr. R.e.l.a.x.

  75. BuccDeez Says:

I like fsu jw. I think he will have a decent NFL career. Simular to a donte culpepper. Or even better steve mcnair.

  76. BuccDeez Says:

A………….. kingpin1 if your a HOF, that means u are an Expert. Just because u were a qb doesn’t make u a expert. But Hof definitely means u are an expert all a way around.
