Logan Mankins A “Detriment?”

NFL Films guru explains

As all Bucs fans know, the offensive line in preseason was a nightmare.

How bad? Tampa Bay even brought in sleezy Richie Incognito for an interview. That’s how bad.

(Oh, Bucs fans, you folks who bellyached so much for Incognito you went hoarse, how come he’s still out there? If he was worth a s(p)it, he’d be employed. Ah, but of course he would have single-handedly turn the Bucs’ offensive ine into the 1976 Raiders, right? Bull-freaking-s[p]it!)

Then, on the day after the Bucs talked to Incognito, the Bucs traded with the Belicheats for perennial Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins.

Since, Mankins has solidified the line, and brought much-needed stability and know-how. It seems Greg Cosell disagrees. The noted Xs and Os guru and senior producer at NFL Films spoke with Joe’s good friend Justin Pawlowski of Scout.com and believes Mankins has been anything but a positive.

“It’s funny how Bill Belichick is usually not wrong about personnel decisions,” Cosell said of the Bucs trade for guard Logan Mankins. “I just got to tell you, and I’m just watching film, but Logan Mankins is by no means the player he once was.”

“He’s been, in many games, kind of a detriment at left guard.”

Mankins has been a tremendous liability after the Bucs had hoped he would be the answer to their guard question once Carl Nicks was not fit to play anymore. The Bucs traded away a 4th round pick and tight end Tim Wright to the Patriots to acquire Mankins and his $6.25 million salary. It’s safe to say that the Patriots have gotten the much better end of this deal to date.

Joe isn’t so sure about this. It seemed the overlord of the Bucs football operations, Lovie Smith, grew weary of Wright for reasons unknown and decided to ship him out. But let’s be honest here, what was the option without Mankins? Put in some glorified turnstile and get both Josh McCown and Mike Glennon maimed?

The Bucs had to do something and Joe is confident Mankins, though he has seen better days, was and is better than any other guard walking the streets.

This guy is steadily getting beat off the line. And it hurts that he has that overpaid left tackle still learning to play as well. Oh! And that awesome center EDS that Aaron Rodgers cried for. O-line is not promising.

  2. pewterpirate99 Says:

Not for nothing but I’ll still take Incognito over any of the crap on the o-line now. And yes that does include Mankins. It’s very obvious to see why Belecheat let him go so easily, he is a detriment.

  3. Captain Stagger Says:

The Hoodie never loses when it comes to trades. Trading pics for busted aging players is not a wise move…at least Gtuden only signed them as FA’s.

  4. pewterpirate99 Says:

” Glorified turnstile ? ” HAHAHAHA!! We all ready have him starting left tackle. You know one of those many great talent evaluations by Lovie.

  5. Joseph Mamma Says:

This trade was a one year bandaid for our left guard, I liked Tim Wright, and we need all the draft picks we could get. This season is down the toilet already so in hindsight this did us no good, and in the long run we still need a left guard. Mankins is not earning his earning his pay imo.

  6. OB Says:

    Joe

I know that lines take time to gel since you have to get used to your partners moves. I am not qualified to say but how about asking Steve White or Mr Brooks or anyone that knows about this and see what they have to say about our line, both of them.

Why isn’t Hardy Nickerson talking or answering any questions?

Next time you talk to Ira, ask him to put forward a new Stat, yes a new one, dropped balls, the football kind.

    Enjoy your day off

  7. tmaxcon Says:

Come on now Joe… The only reason Saint Ritchie is not on a team is all the media frenzy. Obviously, all the domestic violence and other player issues that took center stage at the beginning of the season did not help. The reason Saint Ritchie is not on a team is NOT based on his playing ability; it is simply that no owner wants to deal with the ridiculous media.

It’s a shame that a mans lively hood gets taken away from him based on doing what his coaches asked and political correctness. I have read enough to realize that little Johnathan Martin was no “angel” in that mess either.

When you have race baiting / civil rights attorneys for parents things like this will happen. Ritchie deserved discipline but not the death penalty.

Now to be clear I doubt I’d want my sister to date Saint Ritchie but look what all nice guys gets you on a team…. 1 – 5 with NO fire, NO passion and 2 complete embarrassments on film for the world to view.

I’d really like to understand why Lovie gave up on Wright. I don’t believe he is a TE but he sure would be a upgrade at the 3 or 4th wide receiver position. I just don’t think a player can switch from WR to TE and learn the position / blocking techniques at the pro level without some time.

It’s awful quiet on the Tedford front. I understand HIPPA but not even a player giving him a shout out or well wishes. way too quiet. If he is done why not just replace the man. I know you don’t take requests but I sure believe there is more to this than health.

Mankins is done. good guy but his time is up…

  8. Bucnnole Says:

Bucs offered Harvin first for a mid round draft pick. They passed. Another reason this regime SUCKS.

  9. 77 bassguitarist Says:

I know this is off comment but the losers at
Espn is reporting that the bucs is one of the
Teams that the seahawks spoke to on the harvin trade
Did you guys hear of that?.. Just curious

  10. mac Says:

I got an idea to fix our line… Never draft offensive lineman… Jesus did Mark Dominik suck as a GM or what… That guy is still available because he isn’t worth spit! I think Incognito will get an NFL gig before that clown does…

  11. RastaMon Says:

    Richie is being blackballed…

  12. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Wow, I just read that In that Mankins was the offensive lineman who allowed the safety in the 4th quarter of the Saint’s Game that made the score just a 3-point lead in favor of the Buccaneers.

  13. Warrenfb12 Says:

Mankins sucks. Another fleece job by belichick

  14. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- if Mankins is playing like crap and Cossel backs it up why spin it like it is a positive? All 4 new oline acquisitions are flat out terrible. To argue that Incognito would somehow be worse than terrible is not really much of an argument at all and certainly not provable at the moment. The accepted mediocrity among the fanbase and media is disturbing. Mediocre QB (McCown), mediocre oline (Collins) and overpaid/under-performing FAs (Johnson)….sound familiar?

  15. DallasBuc Says:

OB- “Next time you talk to Ira, ask him to put forward a new Stat, yes a new one, dropped balls, the football kind.”
Hah! Was clarification needed? No one thought you meant the adolescent kind!!!

  16. biff barker Says:

Still can’t understand L&L’s rather lax approach in shoring up the guard position. They had to know Nicks was a question mark all along.

    They got fleeced.

    Fans are flummoxed.

  17. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Of all the issues we’re having, I don’t think he’s counted among them.

  18. billy buckaroo Says:

    Pick a play
Every offense lineman on this team gets burned, it just depends on what play you want to pick.
Seems to me that our opponents have figured out our line blocking scheme in general, regardless of what lineman are in there.
Pretty hard to block when your opponents not only what type play you are running but also where it is going,
    Hopefully they fix that first

  19. nate Says:

Joe i just heard on nfl network bucs are trying to trade vincent jackson????????? Please give us a update!!!!!!!!

  20. DallasBuc Says:

Nate- that is the update. What more do you need?…Joe to type it out for you?

  21. NJBucsFan Says:

The true detriment starts with L like Logan and has 5 letters like Logan but it is Lovie. He is by far the worst detriment to this franchise.

  22. port richey george Says:

Richie incognito has probably changed because he is not getting a pay check anymore. he has had plenty of time to think about his future. you want attitude? meanness ? Richie will do what logan mankins hasn’t done. he give the o-line some serious attitude. he will turn the o-line into mean, nasty and better. logan mankins came advertised as playing through serious injuries with NE…. really? not in TB. he comes out if he breaks a finger nail.

  23. nate Says:

Dallas what they r asking 4 him duh…

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m of the opinion that he cannot take up the slack caused by the rest of the offensive line, but he is trying to. This is causing him to be spread thin, trying to do his job and help the guy next to him.

Just as with the defense, trust in the guys around him is an issue. In his case, no one else along the oline is worthy of being trusted.

So Mankins won’t look good until the rest of the line starts doing well. He’s still got gas left in the tank.

Incognito? Well, he would not be a fix. He would create even more penalties, he is out of shape now, and the unwanted media attention would be devastating.

Better to ride what we have for the rest of the season, let the young guys get experience. Maybe by the end of the year, one or two of them will be worth keeping.

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    port richey george Says:
“Richie will do what logan mankins hasn’t done. he give the o-line some serious attitude. he will turn the o-line into mean, nasty and better.”

You do realize that he was benched for not playing well long before the bullying fiasco, right?

How many times will Tampa fans insist on signing these castaways before they see the truth? Change is not always better. The grass is not always greener.

Evolution of a team? That’s the way to make a team better. Just cutting and signing constantly is not. It destroys stability, something the the team is sorely lacking.

I find it interesting that most Tampa fans were screaming for a new offensive line before the last one was cut. It’s a prime example. They got their wish, and what did they learn? Nothing, because here you all are, repeating the process.

Most funny of all, the fans blame Lovie and Licht for giving them what they wanted.

The same thing happened with the last era of the bucs. Fans constantly complained that the team was getting old. “Bring in younger talent” they cried. Well, to do that, space had to be made. The players we knew and loved had to be sent packing.

And what did the fans do? Cry. Again.

    The true definition of insanity.

  26. Howard Cosell Says:

    Joe,
You need a dedicated post about how you’re going over to the dark side
with respect to the Incognito question. Like the epic Glennon MGM “decision”.

    # Free Richie

  27. DallasBuc Says:

Nate- keep watching espn and maybe you, Joe and the rest of us will find out what teams are asking for. Joe isn’t Adam Schefter or Jay Glazer.

  28. DallasBuc Says:

Bonzai- “Change is not always better. The grass is not always greener.”
Tell that to do-no-wrong Lovie and his lapdog GM. They are the ones that brought all the change without managing to upgrade a single position on the oline or anywhere else.

  29. ElioT Says:

Mankins will retire after thi year rather than coming back to this s**t-show!

Great move Bucs. Really goin to miss that 4th Rd pick.

    SMH!

    Go Sucs!

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Speaking of trades. I’d like the Bucs to trade Lovie Smith to ESPN for Jon Gruden.

  31. port richey george Says:

will v jax be traded? then buy some decent o-linemen

    http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2014/10/19/7002983/tampa-bay-buccaneers-vincent-jackson-trade-deadline

  32. DallasBuc Says:

87- can we throw lapdog in that trade too? Man I miss McCay. The last time we were were able to acquire high-level talent was when he was running the front office. That right there is the real reason we haven’t sniffed a playoff win since SB season.

  33. MGM4Life Says:

I could see a fire sell for draft picks if we have any hope for the future…..speaking of the future it is being reported that Jameis Winston is declaring for the 2015 NFL draft. Finally a franchise Quarterback.

  34. Brent Says:

Nj buc, Lovie’s here for at least 2 years like it or not (unless beat downs become regular events). Coaches rately fired after 1 year. I didn’t agree with hire (thought we needed offensive minded coach defense was fine). Also, were going to see more unnecessary defensive personnel turnover to play his new def scheme. So we might as well hope he can get things going between end of this season and next year. Maybe Frazier could get fired!

  35. DB55 Says:

So you’re telling me that we are getting worse? Didn’t think it was possible. Why give up a conditional pick for Harvin? I mean we have a great return game and speedsters like Herron and Louis Murphy on the roster already. You should never trade a mid round pick for a player like Harvin especially when you can trade a mid round pick AND our best TD pass catcher for an old, injured has-been like mankins. Makes perfect sense.

That why I say all this “it takes time” talk is utter bullskit. This staff makes horrible personnel decisions. We will be the laughingstock of the league for the next 5 years. Congrats Oakland/Minnesota.

  36. Flmike Says:

From what I hear they are not shopping ASJ, They were asked about him by Seattle who wanted him as part of a trade for Harvin

  37. DB55 Says:

Say no to Hester say no to Harvin say yes to demps. OMG SMFH

  38. Louis Friend Says:

Every one of you blames players – not a SINGLE one of you is pointing to their coach: Warhop. That idiot has a track record of horribly coached lines (check Cleveland last year – abysmal). If everyone sucks, shouldn’t that tell you all something?

  39. DB55 Says:

    Louis

Same thing goes for the defense. That blame goes to frazier and smith.

  40. DallasBuc Says:

Louis- plenty of blame to go around to the coaches too but these losers are getting demolished out there on virtually every play. That goes beyond scheme and coaching. That comes down to ability and heart. Asses kicked every effin play. Shameful

  41. tmaxcon Says:

    Brent

2 MONUMENTAL BEATINGS in less than 30 days is enough!

Has anyone caught Steve Smith’s comment about Cover 2 and the Corners who excel at it

  42. Buc1987 Says:

NFL.com’s reporting that Lovie expects a strong second half to the season…

OK whatever… talk is cheap. I’ll cross my fingers he’s right.

  43. DallasBuc Says:

87- Lovie also thinks McCown, Johnson and Collins are good football players. It is fair to say that what Lovie thinks is not particularly consequential from a winning football games perspective!

  44. Skyline Crew Says:

Why do we need Harvin? Just curious. I guess as a return man? Why trade mid round picks for a return guy?

  45. OB Says:

    Dallas Buc

I was just trying to put a little humor in a subject that is bad, dropped balls and we seem to have it bad with certain players., so Buc up and smile.

  46. WalkdaPlank Says:

Joe, you defend the O-line like no other. They are without a doubt the worst unit on the team, including Mankins. He is playing like he doesn’t want to be here. And I don’t blame him. It was a horrible trade lookong back on it. The QB’s are already getting maimed, and let’s not even talk about the run blocking. Wait, what run blocking?

  47. Brent Says:

Tmaxcon-I’m basically with you. Although I’m not ready to say Lovie can’t turn it around. I think Lovie-dovie, boy named Leslie, and tedford all get f’s thus far. I’m just saying head coaches rarely get fired after 1 year. Also, Lovie has decent reputation. So I’m just resigned to 2 years. Can’t you hear the excuses already?? No talent, need time for new scheme, etc. best case Frazier and tedford get axed if we keep complaining. Ideally we get a smart defensive coordinator..

  48. tmaxcon Says:

Brent – you are correct no way glazer clowns get rid of Lovie after 1 year that being said, I’d love for the 3 headed clown posse to grow a sack and take TOTAL control away from Lovie so that we can see what Licht is all about. No way we can judge Licht as a gm with Lovie having final say. I like licht but until his leash is removed how will we ever know if he can judge talent. we know for sure Lovie can’t judge talent. Not one of his free agent signings worked out. I’ll give Verner and McDonald a chance but Johnson, EDS and Collins have been a colossal waste of time and money. Licht went out and got the players lovie wanted not the players he liked. Set the lapdog free!!!!!

If Lovie brings back that joke of a coach Warhop he should be fired immediately. Warhop has a history of horrible lines. Obviously Tedford is not coming back. It’s too quiet on the OC front.

  49. Christopher Says:

If we were a legit Super Bowl contender, I’d make that trade. But we were t and aren’t.

Wright is continuing to adapt and build chemistry wth Brady and the offense and you’re seeing it. I cannot believe we traded wright bc he was very good as a rookie Udfa. We picked him up as a steal and traded him. Bill bellichik duped us bc mankins hasn’t been great.

  50. robert8 Says:

told you guys when this trade went down. Robert is rarely wrong

  51. Brent Says:

Amen. Don’t want my coach being gm. Especially if its Lovie. That was problem with gruden too.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

Tim Wright did not have 1 catch in the Pats game Thursday night.

  53. sho-nuff Says:

there is no bright spot on this team…in fact i see no reason to waste another sunday on them until they SELL us a legitimate product to buy…until them…I will just point and laugh after I get broom the beach on sundays…sorry buds we aren’t in green bay or detroit….our quality of life usurps your hot garbage
