Quarterback By Committee Approach Coming?

October 18th, 2014

McCownGlennonMike Glennon may by the quarterback of the future performing OK as the quarterback of the present, but that doesn’t mean Lovie Smith has lost his acquired taste for Josh McCown.

In fact, one noted former QB suspects Lovie will let them share time.

Speaking on WDAE-AM 620 this week, former Bucs quarterback Shaun King thinks Lovie might choose to experiment when McCown returns healthy.

“I think Glennon’s played well enough to continue being the guy,” King said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they do a committee approach to quarterback and play both of them a little bit.”

King said he can see changes to the playcalling with Glennon versus McCown; the movement of the pocket has been cut back.

King added that he’s no fan of that quarterback-by-committee approach, in part, because of split reps in practice, but he could see Lovie tinkering to find the best fit.

You can catch all of King’s many takes via the 620wdae.com audio player below.

Mccown will start asap. Count on it. Mclown can throw 2 pick sixes in the first two series of the game and he’ll still start over glennon. Mark my words.

  2. terraj35 Says:

Why do you continue to post what shaun king says? He’s such a clown. Then again so are the Bucs. Only fitting that the local media is as bad as the team.

  3. biff barker Says:

Lovie’s real problem on offense is the running game.

Neither QB has a prayer if he cant get it going.

  4. ruggyup Says:

DB55 has a good point, just doesn’t go far enough. Mr. Lovie S. is coaching himself up to stay the course on knowing what has to be done without the resolve to commit to the moves. Lovie’s next job should be in Washington and not with the Redskins.

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

Snuffy Smith has got to come out of this decrepit early season wobble out and hope McCown can prove his decision to name him the starter was legit. You know, now that things are looking up. Snuffy likes Glennon and all, but what the hell can it hurt to give the banged digit another go round.

  6. DB55 Says:

    @ruggyup

As long as he’s not the sec of defense I’m good with it. If he is then Canada may invade us with no resistance at all.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

QB by committee never works. Never!

Season is over. Draft picks are the most important commodity. Bucs need to try and regain some picks. however none of the players have real value maybe try and fleece sometime for a 4 or 5th for glennon and a 5 or 6 for Martin. Vjax and Goldshon are not tradeable do to contracts. Matin was a great rookie but we are going on 2 years of no production and excuses. Popularity does not always equal production and yes martin had a good year and is well liked but its a business time to cut bait and try and salvage something. Mankins trade is a disaster. Wright should have been moved back to receiver and used as a quality 3rd or 4th. not to mention the lost draft pick. Wright is a receiver not a te and I think they gave up on him too soon.

In my opinion this win now project in reality is a 3 year plan. Unless they can pick to Mariota in the first round they should focus on both lines and top DE or OT.

the only way glennon is the future is if Lovie decides he wants to lose his job.

The quickest way to fix the bucs is for the Glazers to sell team. New owners come and do a complete house cleaning. My dream scenairo would be Eddie D buying the team with Brooks President.

  8. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Besides the fact that this has virtually no shot of working, it puts even more on the already overwhelmed Arroyo. Now he has to call plays to fit the strengths of each QB. Who am I kidding, we don’t believe in playing to our strengths.

  9. Flmike Says:

If he does this, then, he’s a bigger schmuck than I gave him credit for….

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m not one of those posters who picks on Shaun King because of he weight….others describe him in this way but I refuse to stoop that low!!!

blubbery, chubby, corpulent, fleshy, full, gross, lardy, obese, overweight, plump, ,portly, pudgy, replete, roly-poly, rotund, round, tubby beefy, bulky, chunky, heavy, heavyset, plumpish, stocky, stout, thick, thickset, burly, hefty, husky; dumpy, squat, stubby; hippy, paunchy, potbellied; flabby, soft; ample, buxom, corn-fed

  12. Arealbucsfan Says:

    Thats a recipe for disaster

  13. RastaMon Says:

    keep digging Lovie…..

  14. Lamarcus Says:

How about a game plan and making adjustments along the game. I expected the bucs to bad this year when they cleaned house and named McCown our starter. Not surprised at these disaster loses. Who ever thout we would be good is a Muppet. But football is like any other team sport. .. 50 50.

  15. Owlykat Says:

I am tired of watching inept Interim OC play calling. When we needed to set up the run with the pass and using screens and three step drops, we foolishly kept trying 7 step drops and long throws with no running game for play action to work, and got Glennon knocked so crazy he was throwing terrible passes on the rare plays when his blocking held up. Lovie, send Jr. Back to QB Coach and promote Josh to interim OC to design our Offensive Game Plan for the rest of our games. Bet he can adjust his Offense to take advantage of what the defense is giving him too. He knows this Offense like the back of his hand and also knows Glennon very well and how to best utilize his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. Hopefully he can school Lovie on what a Dufus he has for an OL Coach and put a stop to his plan of trying to give his Brown Rejects playing time to keep his pets on the roster. Johnson needs to be starting at RG period and our Tackles need to trade positions. We need to scuttle all our Brown Rejects and bring back Jace Daniels who can back up our center and replace him if he has another subpar game like the Ravens game. WarFLOP got rid of Daniels because he was a threat to his keeping his Brown Pet and he wanted to make way for another Brown Reject. INSANE! And we have paid for those dumb moves with two blowouts in a month. Wiseup Lovie!

  16. port richey george Says:

mccown is mobile and should be able to escape some of the
defensive linemen. they spent a small fortune to sign him.
why get a QB as good as mike glennon hurt in
    a 1-5 season. the
offensive line has not but doing their job.why risk
a serious injury to MG. after all the bucs players and coaches
are still learning to play and coach at the NFL level 🙂

  17. Louis Friend Says:

It doesn’t matter who starts at QB since the defense can’t stop anything. Oh and the line can’t block.

I’m in favor of starting McCown. Preserve Glennon for a time when we’re not a train wreck of a team. Why on earth take a chance on losing him to a serious injury he might not come back from? Remember Chris Simms?

  18. Louis Friend Says:

Oh and i think King is full of sh*t. He can guess what the Bucs will do, but he doesn’t know anymore than we do.

  19. Jason Says:

I certainly hope he’s wrong, because this would be ridiculous and the height of stupidity.

  20. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Hopefully we can collectively make a conscious effort to, snap the ball before the play clock reaches zero. I’m sure there’s a veteran coordinator out there, that wouldn’t mind signing on as a consultant for the rest of the season. Plan (A) has clearly failed at this point.

  21. Andrew 1 Says:

Just remembered, I think were set to get Sims back next game. Anxious to see what the guy’s got.

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

The trade deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. EST-If we can’t turn it around by then. Time to clear some cap space, and pick a few conditional/low round picks.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Andrew 1

Yeah, I can’t wait either. Wanna see Evans and ASJ take the next step as well

  24. DB55 Says:

    Andrew

I wouldn’t expect a rookie RB coming off of a ankle injury and six weeks of sitting on the couch to come back and do anything significant behind this oline but what do I know he’s matt forte 2.0.

  25. Architek Says:

This feels like a really bad experiment – the Bucs as a whole don’t seem like a first class organization.

  26. rhenry Says:

Hey Joe, how about a heads up in the summary when you are quoting Shaun King. I have no interest in reading anything he says and would prefer to skip to the next read.

  27. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ DB55

Not expecting him to come in a light the running game on fire, but if he can add a little spark to the running game then that would be great. And no, he is not Matt Forte, but its fair to say he does resemble him a little bit. I see nothing wrong with saying that.

  28. DB55 Says:

Well, in that case glennon resembles peyton manning. Except if glennon ever threw 3 ints in a good ame he’d be fired immediately and sent to where ever freeman is now adays. Purgatory or something? Idk.

  29. Andrew 1 Says:

Nice try, but you took that one waaay out of context. You’re not getting under my skin today DB55 lol. Better luck next time.

  30. DB55 Says:

Lol. Worth a try I guess. I’m not even mad today. It’s too nice outside for anger.

  31. WalkdaPlank Says:

Really, what is the point of keeping McCown in the lineup? I get he had a good “backup” season last year and has history with Lovie, but Lovie even benched him back then. He was only here for a playoff run. Obviously that plan blew up in Lovie’s face.

If McCown stays in, what does that help? Develop a 35 year old career backup? Glennon is the future, Lovie said so himself. Even if you hate Glennon, this will help get rid of him as if he plays bad, the Bucs will continue to lose and get a high pick. If he plays well then we have our QB. Win-win.

    Besides, McClown blows.

  32. Zam Says:

It seemed like once Tedford was officially put on hiatus, the approach and playcalling on offense changed. But that was after McCown was out.

I’d like to see what McCown could do. I don’t think he’s very good but Glennon does not impress me either (despite what the brownshirts in the MGM try to force feed us).

And if McCown still sucks, which I expect he may again, I’d like to know so we can kick him to the curb before next season.

    Gee Wally, ya think?

  34. Buccfan37 Says:

McCown or Glennon, does it really matter with what we’ve seen from the rest of the team? How can anyone judge either QB’s possible effect with all the floundering around on both sides of the ball? I’d stay with MG just because of the youth factor. Switching the present starter for the older backup makes zero sense to me.

  35. Sick of this $hit Says:

Funny how Lovie shows no interest in changing a single detail on the D, but wait until the qb situation starts to improve and he brings back a proven loser, just to mix things up and keep it interesting.

  36. Pete 422 Says:

If you have 2 you have none

  37. Buc1987 Says:

I read something somewhere that some sport analyst said that if Lovie goes back to McCown that means Lovie is surely tanking the season. It was about 2 weeks ago so I forgot once again who said it. I was just roaming the net looking at this and that and stumbled on this dudes prediction.

His reasoning was that Glennon is going to give it his all and that he thinks McCown sucks and Lovie knows that. So by taking Glennon out of picture the team will continue to flounder even worse with McCown under center.

I don’t now it’s just a thought by this dude, but I think he might be onto something. Stay tuned he might be right. They might just tank this season by putting McCown back in.

  38. NJBucsFan Says:

Sounds like Lovie has completly given up. I wish he would just quit

  39. WalkdaPlank Says:

Tanking would mean giving up on Glennon. He needs to play these garbage time games for experience, and take them seriously because he is fighting for a job opening day next season. Secondly, if Lovie tanks he is an absolute moron. Who is there to tank for, again? Mariota? Please. I’ll take a Mike Glennon with two NFL seasons under his belt over a rah-rah overrated Oregon QB. Nobody worth tanking for in this draft. Besides, they will probably still end up with a top 5 pick giving it their all, this team is that bad.

  40. Arealbucsfan Says:

    Id take Mariota over Glennon

  41. WalkdaPlank Says:

Oregon plays 1 or 2 relevant teams a year and Mariota struggles against them, puts up big numbers against scrub teams.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

“Besides, they will probably still end up with a top 5 pick giving it their all, this team is that bad.”

LOL you might catch the wrath of OneIdiot for saying stuff like that ya know…

    Good luck and Go Noles!

  43. OneLove Says:

Going back to McCown would be crazy! Keep riding the Glennon train so he can look good against prevent defenses and maybe get some trade value after we draft his replacement with our top 3 pick….

  44. Buccfan37 Says:

Notre Dame vs Florida St. , where’s the comment spot? Can both teams lose? That would be ideal.

  45. Greg Says:

    This coach has no clue

  46. SteveK Says:

    OneLove,

1st pick goes towards a stud O or D lineman.

  47. Fort Myers Dave Says:

The Bucs do not have to tank to get a top 5 draft pick as their lack of talent; especially on defense ought to make winning at least 4 games virtually impossible unless they line up against a team that is really tanking. Of course last year at this time I thought the Bucs would be lucky to win 1 game and was wondering if the Bucs, Giants or the Jags would get the first overall pick but thanks to a couple of upsets (in particular the surprise win over Detroit that probably got Jim Schwartz canned, like the Pitt win this year could get Tomlin canned) they managed to slip to 7th…. Knowing the Bucs, they could get a couple of insignificant wins and do the same this year but I will guess that the only winnable game they have on the schedule is the Vikes (and possibly the Deadskins if they really implode and/or quit on Cousins); so what will 2-14 or 3-13 get you? Hopefully a good DE, a franchise OT, or a pick to trade down for additional picks as this team has more holes than baby Swiss cheese….

  48. Buc1987 Says:

I don’t know. The fan base will be pretty much decimated by the end of the season. It’s going to take a serious spin machine next off season to get people to buy tickets again. A star QB drafted in the first round just might do the trick.

    Poor Glennon.

  49. Incognito Says:

It’s not illegal to be an idiot.

  50. Richmondbucsfan Says:

    Damn, Winston looks good though…

  51. Incognito Says:

Looks like we really pissed away our number 1 pick away last year.

  52. WalkdaPlank Says:

87 there is no star QB to pick.

  53. Buc1987 Says:

Richmondbucsfan…Winston is trying to do too much right now with the little time he has to throw the ball. He’s actually pissing me off for once.

  54. Incognito Says:

Jimbo fisher is a corrupt redneck but having said that FSU is the lesser of 2 evils tonight. Go Noles!

  55. Buc1987 Says:

Walk…the college season is still young.

  56. Buc1987 Says:

Also you may not like the pick….but I still say Jameis would sell mad tickets and mad jerseys despite is rep.

  57. WalkdaPlank Says:

Jameis probably isn’t coming out, but it would certainly draw a crowd to Ray Jay if he were dressed up in one of those clown suits known as the new uniforms.

My major problem would be that Lovie would not be able to stop Winston from acting like a 12 year old. He is too soft.

  58. Buc1987 Says:

12 year-old…lol that’s being generous….I was an immature 20 year old myself, but no where near like this kid is. I’m not even talking about all the off field problems either. I’m talking about how he carries himself when he’s being interviewed and during pre games. He carries himself like a 10 year old.
I don’t know though as I think he acts that way just to stay loose and not get distracted, he’s definitely unflappable though with all the crappy jams he puts himself in. Nothing bothers this kid. He’s a major leader on the sidelines too. Always firing up his teammates…almost Brady like firing up.

  59. WalkdaPlank Says:

Haha I know I once saw a post-game interview where he was in suit and tie but had a big ass gold chain around his neck.

  60. deminion Says:

    Winston is too good man

  61. OneLove Says:

Winston would definitely sell tickets!! I mean so what if he forgot to pay for those crabs!! It’s him or Mariota!! Both will provide a spark!

  62. Buc1987 Says:

I’d gladly go 1-15 for a chance for Winston if he comes out. As a Nole I’m STILL shaking like a little child in the rain right now. Trying to calm myself down over this game. 4th and 18 I thought… game over, but nope. Phew what a game what a near nightmare. I love college ball, but I can’t take games like that. I’m getting to old, I’m going to have a heart attack some day over games like this. Phew again.

  63. WalkdaPlank Says:

It’d be a huge risk taking Winston but I’d probably take it. The way he dominates on the field and shows leadership like you said holds a lot of weight against his immaturity off the field.

I thought Cam was bad coming out of Auburn, Winston makes him look like Tim Tebow personality-wise.

  64. Buc1987 Says:

Winston comes out in the 2nd hal and goes 15-16 for what 170 yards. That’s a man (boy) possessed. He just has that “it” factor on the field.

As a Nole I don’t want him to go anywhere out of FSU unless it’s to the Bucs. If it’s not to us, then just stay in college kid.

  65. Fort Myers Dave Says:

FSU vs. Notre Dame was an instant classic! Talk about a down to the wire nailbiter! The Mariota/Winston debates ought to be interesting if Winston chooses to come out!

  66. johnnytheMOON Says:

King also thought the Bucs should sign sign Freeman to a huge contract and this make about as much sense as that did…

  67. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    We won’t get Winston. Watch.

As to the QB by committee, NEVER going to happen. Lovie will either stick with McCown until he has no choice, or go with Glennon until he has no choice. Once a decision is made, any change will have to be forced…usually by the QB performance.

  68. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

And really, I don’t care which QB starts. At this point, the offensive line is so bad neither will do well and the starter will probably take a lot of hard hits. So either we sacrifice the QB who is at the end of his career, or we take the chance of the young QB being destroyed like Chris Sims was (whom I have often said was Mike Glennon 1.0).

  69. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’ll put it this way. If we end up with the #1 pick and Lovie refuses to say who they’ll take, it will probably be because of the fan response when they learn he’s going DL or OL instead of QB.
