“I Almost Threw Up!”

October 16th, 2014

Former Bucs great Warren Sapp is no a fan of Gerald McCoy’s sportsmanship.

There’s been a lot of ruckus around here of late about Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy helping opponents get up with an outstretched hand.

It was loud enough that GMC jumped on his soap box this week and said, in so many words, if folks don’t like it, they will just have to deal with it.

It seemed GMC targeted former Bucs guard and current sports radio personality Ian Beckles, who often has been a critic of the Bucs Pro Bowl tackle.

Well, there is someone that definitely turned off by GMC’s acts of kindness; that is Hall of Famer Warren Sapp. Speaking with Booger McFarland yesterday on WHFS-FM 98.7, Sapp said watching GMC offer a hand to opponents made him ill.

“To see [GMC] reach down and help the running back up and help the lineman up, I almost threw up!” Sapp said. “This could never happen, this could never happen. There’s a certain mentality you play this game with.”

Sapp also had other things to say about the Bucs’ woeful defense. Sapp believes the Bucs have the talent on defense to make things happen but was emphatic Lovie Smith is not running a Tampa-2 defense. Click on the link above to hear Sapp’s full interview.

Oh, and before anyone gets any ideas, Sapp and GMC are very close. Sapp also dishes in the interview about a recent phone conversation he had with GMC about the Bucs.

  1. P'cola Buc Says:

Gotta love The Sapp. However I think he might have been less critical of his buddy GMC if the team was winning.

  2. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Every player is wired differently. Some could say there are things Sapp (and many others) have done that have made them ill too. There are so many people claiming this league is full of thugs, yet players also get criticized for being too nice. Wonder if people wanted to throw up when Reggie White and Lee Roy Selmon helped people up.

  3. Espo Says:

I just wish it were quarterbacks he is helping up after sack/fumble/recovery.

  4. eastsidebuc Says:

Have to agree with Sapp. I never saw Reggie White do this, and he was the MINISTER OF DEFENSE!

  5. Skyline Crew Says:

I saw E:60 with McCoy last night. Sapp was raving about Suh being violent and GMC said he just smiles and always will. Didn’t know his mom died before college football started for him. Anyways, different people do different things. Also, Suh is dirty and probably won’t be playing for the Lions after his contract is up.

  6. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Reggie White did it all the time.

  7. PanthersSuck! Says:

    To each his own.

This has absolutely nothing to do with winning or losing the game.

  8. flmike Says:

Here’s part of the current Bucs problem….
Sapp, though he is a legend is not on this team, he hasn’t played for the Bucs in 10 years, GMC needs to step up and say something to the effect of, “This is my team Sapp’s opinion, while valued, has no bearing on how I conduct my or this teams business…”

  9. andres Says:

Thank you HOF Sapp. Thank you.

  10. Espo Says:

FLMike, he said to deal with it. Was that not eloquent enough? I Guess he doesn’t respond to criticism about his politeness on the field very, well, politely.

  11. phil Says:

We need some guys like Vontaze Burfict on our team twisting the ankles of Cam Newton. This team has no attitude other than a no win attitude. It would be nice if we could get some “FIRE LOVIE” billboards so we could get a coach that knows what he is doing because Lovie is an idiot.

  12. dick2111 Says:

All anyone should really care about is what happens from when the ball is snapped until the whistle blows.

If Gerald can turn his ‘attitude’ on and off between plays, more power to him.

And looking at the level that he’s played at for the past 3 years, I’d say he flips the switch once he gets set in position. He and Lavonte both play every play at a legitimate All-Pro level.

  13. Joseph Mamma Says:

He’s running the Tampa Poo Defense.

  14. DallasBuc Says:

I am way more concerned with what McCoy does between the whistles. So it doesn’t look like anyone has the proper mentality when the ball gets snapped.

  15. BucBos76 Says:

@phil – I think it’s a little early for the “FIRE LOVIE” billboards. I remember a no name coach back in 1996 that went 1-8 his first year before he was able to get things turned around and ended up 5-2 down the stretch, and made it to the playoffs the next year. Like Aaron Rodgers says R-E-L-A-X. This team will get there. These guys are not giving up like they did last year, and the year before. Back to the issue, though. I think GMC can help up whoever he wants. He’s just going to go back and knock them on their arse again anyway.

  16. johnnytheMOON Says:

JJ Watt helps players up …..i dont get the big deal ..

  17. Soggy Says:

Is he useing his hurt hand to lift them up?

  18. Pierce Says:

So this is what bad teams talk about when they can’t talk about winning. So petty

  19. sho nuff Says:

wimpy owners=wimpy team…sorry bucs fans but this team is weak freaking sauce…own it

  20. bucrightoff Says:

Did Sapp wanna throw up when the repo men showed up at his house? More than likely. I appreciate everything Warren did for the Bucs on the field but the guy is a massive dick and how he keeps a job on NFLN is beyond me. Please keep quiet Warren.

  21. Ray Rice Says:

GMC isn’t Reggie White. Stop comparing them. If he was producing like White or Sapp and helping people up it would be a different story. But he isnt. He’s playing like $hit. He is far from our main problem. He says its sportsmanship. You can show sportsmanship in many ways other than help up the guy that just ran you over or the guy that just mauled you.

  22. gulfcoast Says:

Thank you Ray Rice. Love GMC but maybe he needs some nasty….

  23. Sick of this $hit Says:

Sapp will continue to say what ever he has to to keep getting press time. If the overwhelming population of fans agreed that GMC was one hell of a sportsman for his efforts, then Sapp would be on the same wagon. Its all a dog and pony show. And IMO, jealousy. Sapp is not relevant any longer. Thanks for the input, but shut up!

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Sapp is a clown, was a good player hell yeah. I liked him on the roast with Lisa Lampanelli. He has a point about GMC, why be friendly in a battle that has a loser.

  25. warrenfb12 Says:

Glad Sapp had the balls to say it. GMC does not play with that fire. He is mentally weak. Always checking out injured when we are getting blown out. Disappears for long periods of time. I think he has been reading his own press clippings too much. Guy is referring to himself in the third person, and I dont think he can formulate a sentence without using the word leader at least ten times.

He hasn’t earned any of the rockstar status he holds around here. Tired of hearing him call himself a leader without displaying on the field consistently. Sapps antics were tiresome at times, but he always backed it up on the field.

  26. warrenfb12 Says:

Gotta love the media instantly defending him around here too. They are too soft. “Oh dont say that to Gerald, thats just being a bad person.”

Do you know what kind of media criticism he would get in New England or New York for this?

  27. Phillip Says:

Whoever said they shouldn’t do it because of a fatigue thing is really pulling for straws(was said on previous thread about GMC doing this)… If the RB (or any player for that matter) is that tired there is a backup for a reason… lmao the thought process of some people on here is crazy

We are getting picked apart left and right on defense I think the last thing we or anyone should be worried about is if OUR BEST player is helping out another player from the opposite team. Can’t stand Beckles sounds like a turd on the radio.. Sapp needs to stop talking and teach the D-line how to play this “INFAMOUS” Tampa 2…

  28. Buc1987 Says:

“Sapp needs to stop talking and teach the D-line how to play this “INFAMOUS” Tampa 2…”

Is Sapp employed by the Bucs?

    Now who’s grasping for straws?

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Sissy team, sissy defense and sissy fans judging by all the support for this garbage.

    Long live Warren Sapp.

  30. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ BucBoss76

Um not sure the team looked like it gave up last year or the year before considering most games were close and lost in the final few minutes as opposed to this year where games are over within the first few minutes.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

If your running over a team. I see no problem with helping them up. But when your team is down 28-0 in the first quarter and you do it. It sticks out to me and it looks bad.

Here let me help you up, score some more on us and I’ll keep helping you up.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

Toes… I read what he said too about them giving up last year and year before that and wanted to throw up myself.

I don’t know where people get this stuff from. It’s like they convince themselves of stuff they never saw, just because.

    SCHIANO’S TEAM NEVER QUIT!

They might not have liked him much, but they never quit. This team LOVES Lovie Smith and look at the results.

  33. PFUDOR Says:

Hey, if McCoy wants to play like a Pink Fluffy Unicorn
Dancing on Rainbows then that’s his decision.

  34. Steady Mobbin Says:

Schiano’s team never quit on him???

He went 6-4 in his first 10 games here, lost TWELVE OF HIS NEXT 13 and was dead man walking from what point on. Period. The end.

If his team didn’t quit on him, he took a stupid pill near the end of 2013.

    A 6-4 team went 1-11.

Maybe we shouldn’t have handed our #1 CB and #1 RB to Bellicheck for a 4th rd and 7th rd pick…..and replaced them using a 2nd+4th rd pick (Martin)….and a 1st rd pick+conditional 3rd (revis).

In an effort to become completely Schiano, we gave away a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round pick and got WORSE at two positions. Talib is better than a one year rental on a gimpy Revis, and Blount’s 4.7 career YPC (5.8 this year) dwarfs Martin’s 4.1 career ypc (2-something this year). Blount would be the perfect compliment to a shifty guy like Rainey, Martin is dead weight.

    ALL HAIL SCHIANO

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Schiano’s team never quit on him? Funniest statement I’ve heard all week.

  36. Steady Mobbin Says:

At least Schiano, college linebacker, was able to identify talent and draft Mark Barron to shutdown Jimmy Graham instead of Luke Kechley.

The FEAR you people want McCoy to instill in opposing offenses? It doesn’t come from a DT. It comes from linebackers and safties who knock you da fuq out when you cross the middle. We drafted Barron, who gets his manhood taken by Khiry Robinson on a game winning TD run in OT, and the next week decides not to try as Pierce rumbles into the endzone.

At least we ended up with a team full of Schianomen. Screw Blount, screw Talib, I don’t care about Michael Bennett either. We’ll be fine with Doug Martin, Eric Wright, Daniel Teo Nesheim and Keith Tandy.

  37. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Talib was gonna be gone, so we got a 4th round pick for a guy who almost always comes up with a lame hammie in the big games and had a bunch of off field issues. Blount has been bounced from team to team, so it wasn’t just Schiano who let him go. Amazing how the haters spin things

  38. 1bucfan88 Says:

This site is becoming more and more difficult to access via mobile device. Gotta get with the times Joe.

  39. Steady Mobbin Says:

Talib could have been had for 1 year 5 million, instead we got Revis at 1 year 16 million. If Talib was “gonna be gone”, it’s because of a failing that can be blamed on the same people who handpicked eric wright at 7 mil a year while ignoring Brent Grimes.

  40. Steady Mobbin Says:

oh, 1 year 16 million, plus the #13 pick in the draft + a future 4th, realizing a 4th is all we got for Talib.

Talib and Brent Grimes each signed deals at 1 year 5 mil. We could have had Talib, Grimes, and Mike Bennett for the price of Revis. Spin that.

  41. buctebow Says:

I say do whatever, just win.

  42. ddneast Says:

Everybody has to be his own man. Lee Roy Selmon was once asked why he didn’t hit QB’s harder with more intent to injure when he had an open shot on them he politely replied, “they have families to feed, too.”
Culpepper was actually meaner than Sapp and the only player on the team who could really put the needle to him effectively.
After one play when Lynch knocked out his brother in law who played for the Bears as a tight end, they were walking the wobbly Bear off the field next to the Bucs defensive huddle Culpepper yelled at him, “hey buddy, he’s sleeping with your sister, too.”

  43. Stevie Blart Says:

Steady you are a complete idiot. No the players never quit on Schiano. You cant state a win-loss record and say they quit. Thats a real stretch which nobody buys except for your own dumbass… It really pointless to try and communicate with someone so stupid as yourself…

  44. Buc1987 Says:

Look at the scores and tell me the team quit on Schiano…@ Seattle is only one example they were 0-7 at the the time and traveled to Seattle (SB Champs) They lost 27-24 at Seattle and had them on the ropes for most the game.

DO YOU CALL THAT QUITTING ON YOUR COACH?

Take a look at the rest of the wins and losses morons especially the ones in Hawaii.

Show me where the team quit on Schiano last season. Don’t talk shyte just to talk shyte.

Here I’ll help the little morons along…..

    Lost 18-17 @ Jets
    Lost 16-14 to N.O. @ Tampa
    Lost 23-3 @ N.E.
Lost 13-10 to Ariz @ Tampa
Lost 31-20 to Philly @ Tampa
    Lost 31-23 @ Atl
Lost 31-13 to Car @ Tampa
Lost 27-24 in OT to the SB Champion Seahawks@ Seattle
Won 22-19 @ Tampa over Miami
Won 41-28 @ Tampa over Atl
    Won 24-21 @ Det
    Lost 27-6 @ Car
Won 27-6 @ Tampa over Buf
Lost 33-14 @ Tampa to San Fran
    Lost 23-13 @ STL
    Lost 42-17 @ N.O

Where did this team quit on Schiano last season. Where was the blowout @ N.O. If so that means they quit on him????

What a bunch of morons. If anything this team has already quit on Lovie, judging by the Ravens and Falcons game alone. STFU with this nonsense.
