“Guys Were Looking Around Waiting For Somebody Else To Make A Play”

October 14th, 2014

gerald mccoy 0916Joe’s still flummoxed by how flat and lifeless the Bucs came out on Sunday.

How does that happen, and why does it continue through an entire first half?

Former Bucs tight end Dave Moore, the team’s radio analyst, took a stab at that mystery.

“Guys were looking around waiting for somebody else to make a play,” Moore said on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday.

“It seems to snowball on this team for some reason. And it’s one of those things that if you figure you, you could make a ton of money.”

How could Joe not question the character of the Bucs? Teams don’t get steamrolled twice early in a season unless they’ve quit on their coach or are woefully talent-challenged. But the Bucs haven’t quit and they have talent?

Maybe the bye week is a good thing for the Bucs, more time to look in the mirror and agonize and focus. Joe hopes that’s the case, versus the alternative, guys planning spa days and January vacations.

(You can listen to all of Moore’s analysis via the 620wdae.com audio below. Joe will bring more nuggets from it later this week.)

On Sunday? Try the whole season. I haven’t seen this team come out looking like they want to be here this whole season. Maybe during the Buffalo preseason game but that doesn’t really count because they only had to get pumped about a few plays before they were pulled out. Otherwise, they’ve been flat from the opening kickoff each game. They finally break out the smelling salt in the 3rd quarter and the team wakes up sometimes.

  2. Brandon Says:

I’m just puzzled how we’re continually botching the entire concept of the T-2 defense. The CBs are supposed to be jamming the WRs at the line and instead we are giving the 7-8 yard cushions despite not having LBs anywhere near the passing lanes. This is a basic concept of the T-2 defense: disrupt the routes and timing of the passing offense. We are NOT doing that.

  3. gatrbuc17 Says:

    Brandon is correct.

  4. Ray Rice Says:

Got dam we are garbage!!! By far the worse team in Florida.

  5. Patrick in VA Says:

@Brandon – Maybe that’s the Lovie spin on the T-2. Don’t know if that’s the case or if it’s him adjusting to the talent level that we have on this team. perhaps he knows that the CBs we have will get torched if they jam at the line. Probably better to give up the 4 yard pass rather than the 15 yard pass. That’s speculation of course and none of it matters anyway because in reality we’re giving up much more every time but I have to think that that’s the idea they’re operating off of

  6. Jeff Says:

Lovie only believes in soft zone coverage. That’s why his version of the cover 2 sucks. Fire him now and offer nick Sabin 25 million per year.

  7. Dean Says:

One thing that stood out dramatically, as I watched the Bucs-Ravens rewind. The Ravens receivers caught the ball, on the run and added many, many yards after the catch. The Bucs, on the other hand, when they did complete a pass, were dead in their tracks. With the exception of Herron and Murphy, ASJ and Evans got almost no yards after the catch. It looks like a control-type offense that offers little or no hope to break any plays.

  8. Zam Says:

Thing is, are they playing Tampa-2 every down? I remember reading here that they really only play Tampa-2 on 3rd and long.

Could it be they should be playing more Tampa-2 than they are?

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

I read that no team in the history of the NFL has ever trailed 38-0 at halftime in their home stadium. Futility record setting these Bucs. Lay the disgust on thick. This is beyond unacceptable. It’s mind numbing.

  10. lightningbuc Says:

Dean, kudos to you for watching the game again. I couldn’t stomach it enough to watch the whole thing the first time.

  11. Zam Says:

In the loss last week on those first 6 drives, the first time the Ravens got third and long were at: Tampa 9, Tampa 17, Tampa 19, Tampa 45. Sometimes they never even had to get to third and long.

So is it really Tampa-2 that’s the breakdown? Or is it Lovie’s own adaptations on all the other down/distance situations?

  12. Greg Says:

This team is a direct refection of the head coach.
No drive or emotion what so ever.
This falls on the lifeless coach.

  13. billy buckaroo Says:

Two extra weeks for Johnson to “heal” up the ankle.
A struggling Vikings team coming in
regardless of how much money he gets,
if he continues to get manhandled easily
No choice but to pull him

  14. Robert 9 Says:

    I say it’s bad coaching.

lobama smith comes out last week and says he does not believe in fatigue. essentially blaming the defense, when we all know several timeouts should have been used to give them breathers. that loss was on lovie and he blamed the defense.

my read is that was a big F you to them, and he has officially lost the locker room with his complete oblivion of the situation. just my take.

  15. NewTampaChris Says:

Joe, please do your best to not make the entire 5pm hour a referendum about the QB. The fun of talk radio is a healthy debate. But when one side is totally dug in on an issue, it’s a lot less fun.

The MGM might live strongly on the pages of JBF but in the general population (that I interact with), no one cares who the QB is. As long as we have a chance to win.

[Again, the show is Steve’s show. Joe is just a guest. Steve decides the subjects and content of his show. If he irks you so much, don’t listen. It’s really that simple. — Joe]

  17. Joe Says:

    New Tampa:

Joe is a guest. Nothing more. Steve’s show. Steve decides the content.

  18. abdominal snowman Says:

Patrick in VA, did you watch the beginning of the Pitt game?

  19. Patrick in VA Says:

    Sure did

  20. Lamarcus Says:

Simply put….. cover 2 is dead. I dont care about no one says about Cowboys D. Hell, cover 2 dont even work on Madden Cover 2 is dead

  21. james Says:

fact of the matter is this, lovie gutted 20+ players on both sides of the ball, with his new GM, AND PICKED UP GARBAGE FA’S again this is their team, and their direction, also L&L hand picked their coaching staffs this was done all very swiftly by the glazer organization, after the firing of shiano. it was like in my opinion, instead of doing a diligent search, for a creative and inspiring new head coach, they (GLAZERS) just immediately picked Lovie because espn and other anylysts were saying what a good fit lovie would be for tampa. again this falls on ownership, tedford may or may, not have been a bad choice for OC but we do not know, we also did not know if L&L had prior knowledge of his medical condition at the time of his hiring, now we are left with a 32 year old QB coach, calling plays who never held such a high position(RESPONSIBILITY) before in his career. as far as Frazier is concerned, well we seen how much success he had with the Vikings, did we not? I have been saying this for years, the ownership of this club, does not care about wins or losses, what it cares about is PROFFIT & LOSS! AND LIKE IT OR NOT THE BUCS ARE A VERY PROFITABLE CLUB IN THIS LEAUGE. they(glazers) will continue to placate there fanbase, with rehashed bravo sierra (B.S) bad coaching and equally bad player personel . until the people of tampa demand there be a change. no team in the history of this sport could be this bad, inept, impotent, boring, incompetent, for the majority of it’s existence, if it was not approved by the current and previous owners of the club!! all in the name of PROFFIT. start boycotting their games, buying their merchandise and watching this awful production of futility and maybe they(GLAZERS) will get the point.

  22. Patrick in VA Says:

@Joe – I think I speak for the other JBF posters who have expressed similar sentiments when I say that our comments are less about taking jabs at your business partner and more about trying to give you feedback so you can get a pulse of how your fan base is receiving your product. I’ll be happy to tune out, no worries there. I just wanted to offer a fan’s vote for when you’re working on future contracts.

  23. james Says:

OR KEEP ON BUYING INTO THIS LSD GLAZER CONCPEIRACY AND CONTINUE WITH THE SAME OLD NONESENSE OF THE MANTRA, NEXT YEAR, NEXT YEAR , NEXT YEAR, WELL GUESS WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING THAT SINCE 1976 and only for a few short years have we been relevant in this league!!!!!!! well guess what NEXT YEAR NEVER COMES.

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

Hindsight is 20/20 but you have to think that we bungled this roster a bit, especially the o-line. The most perplexing though, is the defense. This was to be the better of the two units. Injuries aside, this D stinks! We’ve given up the booty every single game, what gives?!
I was leery of Johnson from the jump. The dude gets pushed around all over the place. McDonald is playing average but he needs to step up. Outside of McCoy who really scares anybody?! Once past the front, there are more holes than swiss cheese. LVD can’t tackle everybody! Where are our thumpers? Right now this D is SOFT!
Now the O, more specifically WRs; CATCH THE BALL! THE BALL IS YOUR FRIEND! The biggest difference I see between the Bucs and other teams is that not only do their receivers routinely get open, they catch the ball when it hits their hands. It drives me crazy!
I don’t know how much coaching can help with this problem, but how about when you’re under fire, scrap the 7 step drops and go to a 3 step and get the ball out of the QB’s hands. Also, we seem to be the least screening team in all football. Hello tempo!
It’s clear we lack talent in some positions so lets play with some pride instead. I hope this team comes back from the bye with its hair on fire. “Disappointment” is an understatement at this juncture!

  25. SoonerinTampa Says:

No worries Joe, if you are going to have the same attitude as you homie on the radio…I will tune out. To be honest, it was the only time I actually listen to that wretched program. But, alas, no worries…it won’t be a problem moving forward.

  26. gt40bear Says:

Stop it, JUST STOP IT! This team IS NOT talented! A talented team doesn’t get cow-killed, curb-stomped, bitch-slapped in their own house! I’m tired of the media telling us how much talent this so-called team has! Tell us the damned truth, we’re big boys, we can handle it! I know some outlets have tried to moderate the hype but in general we have been fed a bill of goods.

  27. Cobraboy Says:

    I dunno.

Maybe they HAVE quit on the coaches.

That would be the most direct answer.

  28. atleastSchianowas7and9 Says:

    Greg nailed it!

“This team is a direct refection of the head coach.
No drive or emotion what so ever.
This falls on the lifeless coach.”

This guy stands around with the same stupid look on his face while his team is being embarrassed on both sides of the ball! Hell, Dungy had more fire than this guy and we ran him out of town because he didn’t show enough emotion.

I bet that Tedford milks his workers comp for the rest of the season, then resigns just to keep from being associated with this regime.

Those are the same (Glazers) gave The Bucs their respectability and Tampa’s only Superbowl Title… how quickly Jamie forgets.

  29. atleastSchianowas7and9 Says:

I also would like to wager that this years team will not even best the record of Raheem’s 3-13 season. Any takers?
