The Drive That Ended In Disaster

One of the ugliest drives in recent Bucs history ended in a safety and seemed to be a turning point in the game.

One of the ugliest drives in recent Bucs history ended in a safety and seemed to be a turning point in today’s loss.

It will go down as one of the most painful, ugliest drives Joe can remember. It tops the leaky, sleepy Josh Freeman meltdown in New York last year.

At a time when one Bucs score could have sealed the game, the gruesome series gave up points at a terrible time.

It started out promising at the Bucs-20; Doug Martin runs for three years but Demar Dotson was called for holding. On the next play, Vincent Jackson ran in motion past center just as the ball was being snapped. Mike Glennon recovers the ball on the Saints-2.

Two more plays and two more penalties, another Martin run to nowhere, and then Glennon was sacked by Junior Galette for a safety and the Saints pulled within a field goal at 31-28.

We all know the rest. That was the turning point. The Saints’ crowd, which earlier had been hushed by the Bucs, was, as Al Michaels would say, “at full throat.”

The safety only added to the raucous crowd that made the very walls of the Superdome shake. In the lifeless Bucs locker room, wide receiver Louis Murphy didn’t deny the implosion may have been caused by the crowd and affected communication, but he was not sure.

“The crowd going wild,” Murphy said. “I think we will have to go back and look at the film to see exactly what happened. The crowd was going wild. It was loud. It was a hostile environment. But we have to finish those types of drives.”

The Bucs could have easily silenced the crowd, as it did earlier, by moving the ball. Instead, they went all Pop Warner and strung together a series of bad plays one would be hard-pressed to find anywhere.

Yes, the Bucs’ offense played the best it did all season. But it took one series to turn a glorious upset into a kick-in-the-nuts loss.

In no uncertain terms, on that drive, the Bucs p!ssed in the wind.

I have never seen so many flags thrown in one game in my whole life! Yes, the Bucs were sloppy as hell on both sides of the ball, but these officials are F’ing nuts! The NFL has really become flag football, these freakin referees just need to let the damn players play!!

  2. WalkdaPlank Says:

Sorry, but those were some BS calls. The safety was bad playcalling and execution, but everything leading up to it was that horse radish from the zebras.

  3. Robert7 Says:

So how much of that drive was on glennon?

  4. Ray Rice Says:

Disaster isn’t even the word!!! Dam this loss hurts. $hit!!!!!!!

  5. Robert7 Says:

I actually think the defense wasn’t bad. I put this on lovie for not calling a timeout in ot when they were clearly gased and the saints were on fire

  6. Sully Says:

I just finished watching the game on my PVR (so I am a little behind on all the comments and other posts) — but why the heck did Lovie not step in with a time out just prior to the safety? Yikes- things were cascading badly at that point, crowd noise was getting more intense, the huddle looked disorganized and then within a couple of plays “disaster!” — If there was any time for a head coach to manage the game that was it!

  7. Robert7 Says:

Meh this loss don’t hurt. The gamd was good. Maybe because I am MGM…… I know lovie and Frazier are going to blow it somehow. But at least we have a Qb that can play IMO

  8. Robert7 Says:

@ ray rice… This loss hurts more than your wife jaw exiting the elevator 🙂

  9. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Sully

Completely agreed. I can’t believe we finished regulation with ALL OF OUR TIMEOUTS!! Lovie is a terrible game manager.

  10. Ray Rice Says:

We will get better next week. Glennon will shine.

  11. WalkdaPlank Says:

Lol yes on that play the Bucs offense looked like they were on an elevator and had just seen Ray Rice walk in.

  12. BucsInDurham Says:

I think the delay of game was intentional, as you’d much rather keep a timeout than burn one for a single yard difference. Even so, the drive was an unquestionable disaster.

  13. Ray Rice Says:

    @Robert

Watch what you say. People are sensitive around here. Lol

  14. Waterboy Says:

Not a terrible overall game but they won’t win many games giving up 37 points. The defense allowed the crowd to get back in the game.

  15. Patrick in VA Says:

The Bucs are like that terrible girlfriend we all had at one point (or might still have now). Ultimately they’re terrible for us and they treat us like crap but they do just enough to keep us around. They’ll give us a glimmer of hope that things are about to turn around and that we’ve got a diamond in the rough in our hands. Meanwhile, all of our friends tell us how bad it is for us and that there are much better girls (teams) out there but we keep banging or heads against the wall waiting for this one to get its act together.

yeah cause spousal abuse is so appropriate and funny. smh

  17. lurker Says:

    lovie smith’s thinking:

“It’s been talked an awful lot about “the offensive line, they have to play together’’,’’ Smith said, via ESPN. “I don’t buy that at all. I think you get the best possible guys you can, and you make moves when you have to.’’

    also,

“If you have great defense, create turnovers and great special teams, you can win 10 games. From there, the quarterback comes in,” he said.

    still waiting…

  18. Robert7 Says:

Is that the guy in the van?

  19. lurker Says:

you would know raymond, supposed intelligent and successful person…
sorry your immaturity has gotten the better of you and as i said, i hope you turn it around before your immaturity ruins your life.

  20. Robert7 Says:

Ima change my name to Ike turner lol

  21. lurker Says:

  22. Ray Rice Says:

Ey Lurker you’re the one preying on kids. You need to get your life straight buddy. No more living a secret internet life Lurking. You need God in your life. Not kids.

Says the guy who was laughing at our mistakes throughout the game…

  24. Brandon Says:

That Mankins holding penalty was complete crap. Drew Brees and the Saints always seem to get the BS calls (remember Adrian Clayborn’s sack fumble that got called back for a hit to the head).

  25. Pelbuc Says:

Even with all the penalties, all the Bucs had to do is not screw up near their own goal line and punt but that was too much to ask for. The incompetence on every level of this organization is incomprehensible. There are team with lesser talent that have made it to the playoffs. Every Sunday we discuss new ways that find to lose. Shameful and Pathetic. They should at least strive to be mediocre.

  26. lurker Says:

    ???ummm, what?

  27. Max Says:

Franchise Quarterbacks never take a safety. The elite quarterbacks can throw interceptions, fumble, and even throw pick sixes but I have rarely to never seen them take a safety.

I’ll never join the MGM. No bueno, no thanks.

  28. Jim Walker Says:

WalkdaPlank Says: Completely agreed. I can’t believe we finished regulation with ALL OF OUR TIMEOUTS!! Lovie is a terrible game manager.

When your leading by two scores for almost 20 minutes of the second half why would you stop the clock?

  29. Skelly Says:

Offensive Line cost us this game. period. I am so tired of being a BUCS fan.

  30. Not Lovie Smith Says:

That is an insult to my tiny mite pop warner team. We never have drives that bad.
