Rave Film Review For Glennon

October 2nd, 2014

mike glennon 0930cA prominent former Buccaneer has gone to the game film and says he sees real growth from rookie Mike Glennon to the current Year-2 version.

The little things are standing out.

Joe recommends the audio of former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht below. Becht is dialed in to all things Bucs as a member of the Buccaneers Radio Network, in addition to his duties for BSPN.

Becht sure sounds like a new member of the Mike Glennon Mob, but Joe cannot confirm that.

There is improvement in Glennon moving in the pocket and going through his progressions and finding open receivers, Becht said, even if his passes weren’t always on the money.

“At least his eyes and vision were properly set according to what the defense gives him,” Becht said on WDAE-AM 620 this week.

He went on to praise the Bucs for taking the “shackles” off the offense. “I saw actual patterns and combination routes,” said Becht, who liked that the Bucs were “not babying Glennon” against the Steelers.

For Joe, this analysis is especially encouraging because Glennon absolutely needed to get a lot better than he was last year to be considered a “quarterback of the future.” If there’s evidence of that already, then there’s hope that Glennon can evolve into a solid NFL starter.

I saw Glennon avoid the rush more than once last Sunday. That’s the improvement that I noticed. He seems more alert too.

  3. Casual Observer Says:

Glennon was just a rookie last year. Thrown into the fire with a poor OL and a mediocre receiving core. He was outstanding as a rookie. There was good reason to see a high potential in him. I think we’ll see steady progression this year. … If he gets the chance!

  4. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

It’s not THAT surprising. There were quite a few people who said he showed enough last year to see what he could do without the circus atmosphere he was thrust into, after Freeman finally stopped caring whatsoever.

Imagine him with Tedford in the booth. Sure, technically, we don’t know what Tedford’s playcalling looks like, but, logic would dictate it would be better than the kid who learned under him.

I still don’t expect playoffs, but, it would be great if they can figure out if they can use the next first rounder somewhere besides QB, maybe DE or OT or CB.

  5. BucFanInArkansas Says:

DO NOT LET THE BIG DAWG HEAR THAT AUDIO. It will ruin his day.

  6. Soggy Says:

@RastaMon, wow and you must be the turd throwing the rock…

  7. al121976 Says:

Say what you want about the Schiano regime, they or he had an eye for talent. I’m not totally sold on Glennon but he does show he has potential.

  8. RastaMon Says:

Hey Soggy….explain…I have never criticized Glennon……never…I have stayed out of the debate has it has always been too early to draw any conclusion. Lovie on the other hand I have been chewing his azz from game 1

  9. Casual Observer Says:

And, to a man, the entire team is behind him. They all wear his initials on their unis. Hope the coach notices that.

  10. Soggy Says:

Maybe I got the wrong impression, It looked like a cheap shot, Peace

Casual Observer: Hahaha!!! I think that EVERY TIME I see that patch. Awesome.

  13. Mike J Says:

We need to keep in mind that Mike is learning his second offense in two years as a pro.Plus, he is trying to do it without its architect around.

Watching Glennon vs. Pitt. he seemed to start out the game staring down a receiver, but as the game wore on, mainly 2nd H, he began looking around & making reads;maybe he trusted his pass-pro more by then.It is easy to like the way he keeps his eyes down-field.He sure could use a better running game & some play-pass, though. That’s when he was so good in 2013.

  14. robert9 Says:

he’s the best damn QB to come out of the draft in the last 36 years!

  15. BoJim Says:

Yes, we need a running game!!!

See, this has been my contention since last year. You put any rookie QB over the past few years behind that under performing offensive line and they’re not going to have a very good year.

  17. Zam Says:

He’s added slant to his repertoire of checkdown and sack-fumble. Perhaps he’ll level up soon and spend his upgrade points on accuracy skill or an out pattern move.

It’s better than anything I saw last year from him and better than about 95% of what I saw from the Great Josh McCown this year, so here’s hoping.

  18. Buc Fan #237 Says:

22 TDs and 10 Ints career with TB.

  19. d-money Says:

So wait a second, are you telling me that a rookie QB was able to improve his play between season 1 and season 2?

But I thought he wasn’t capable if ever improving and what we saw last year was a completely finished product….now I don’t know what to believe any more.

Just as I was surprised when I realized he had an arm and could make all the throws. Some yahoo on here kept bringing up that his arm speed was a low mph on the radar gun at the combine.

I wish I could remember who called him noodle arm repeatedly.

  21. ElioT Says:

But the Big Douche says he doesn’t pass the eye test?

We all know that a fat-f**k former golf pro knows what he’s talking about when it comes to X’s and O’s on the professional football field. Much more so, than someone who actually played and studies the game like Becht.

Go MGM, ruin the Big Douches day!!!

    Go Bucs!

  22. RastaMon Says:

I justed flipped AM to FM….I go back and forth but…as Bob Dylan sung…”The Times they are a changing”…I perfer conversation over a blowhard bully ..nwhen he can’t ake an argument …heads explodes and insults the caller…warning anyone never to dare think like that again. I’ll tune in tomorrow again….just saying….can’t teach an ole dawg new tricks…….

  23. Casual Observer Says:

I am happy to be in the MGM mob. He aint perfect but he is smart and learns. Didn’t he get his MS degree before leaving NC. I like the laser/darts he throws (quickly out of his hand) in his medium range throws. OK- he has missed a few – but not by much. I think it will be fun to watch his development.

  24. SAMCRO Says:

All I want to know is, if …no, let’s say “when” MG8 has a statistically horrid day,(which happens to even elite QBs), will everyone who is finally giving him some due, turn on him like a dime, with torches, and pitchforks in their voices?

    #cruelworld

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

I can only hope Glennon continues to improve and finds ongoing success as QB of the Bucs, the team needs an effective leader. Did’nt big dog say on Monday he would accept Glennon as the Bucs starter if Lovie named him that? He does get carried away when callers disagree with him. You have to kiss his butt to keep him calm, or get dispatched quickly.

  26. TAC Says:

There still wasn’t much of a pocket to step up into the last game, but Glennon played it better than McCown did. He stood tall, and let it go, throwing receivers open.

McCown would try to step up through the broken pocket with his head down, and throw some of the worst garbage seen in awhile.

Maybe Glennon can see better because of his height, but whatever, he is playing better for now. Keep it up, and congrats to the mob, whatever your rank, and time in service.

  27. buc4lyfe Says:

Madness!!!!!! Wow who would have thought that any nfl player should improve from year one to year two. All these people being added to the mike Glennon mob….. If all it takes is staying the obvious that mike Glennon is better than most Freeman and josh mccown I guess that puts me in the mob to. Otherwise there’s entirely too much exaggeration going on. He’s a good quarterback, he’s a GOOD quarterback nothing more nothing less, it’s his second year and he’s not above average qb so only time will tell and when I say time mgm I mean more than one week. Forget last year he’s not a rookie this year

And finally, one of the most interesting facts I learned, was that of all those 1st round QB’s, 37 of 51 of them (37/51=72.5%) improved their lifetime QB rating compared with their rookie rating.

Context note: The original post was my research on ALL of the QBs chosen in the first round in the last 20 years, where Mike Glennon’s stats compared very favorably to most of them, and that led me to become a charter member of the MGM.

Yet many people, including Joe, have made comparisons of how LVD’s stats compare favorably to the Hall of Famer, Mr. Derrick Brooks at the same stage of their career?? Don’t any players exhibit a degree of precociousness at an early stage in their career, which foretells future performance?

  30. Chef Paul Says:

Greg Cosell says Glennon made the O-line better because of his style of play. So by my count, in only one full game this year he has made those around him better, and has had a signature win.

An improving young QB. What more could a team ask for from a youngster? Payton Manning day 1?

  31. RastaMon Says:

Howard Cosell said that one day the Bucs would draft a QB named Glennon that would take them…….

    Same mob – same song.

Can we let the guy play – jeez?????

  33. White Tiger Says:

I’m a Buccaneer fan, not a fan of a particular player, and I never saw enough out of Glennon to suggest he was anything more than a quality back-up.

I’m also of the opinion that NFL teams only need NFL-average from one side of the ball, if the other side of the ball is NFL-elite.

The problem for me is, we’re in transition. While the personnel on both sides of the ball are good, some positions we’re even better than good, but neither could be described as elite (even if I thought the defense was pretty close).

Since the first game of the season, the problem I concluded is that the BEST that could be said about either the offense or the defense is that both were just, well, average.

Last week, I have to admit, Glennon looked like he was dialed in. He was playing to his potential – while maximizing the skills of those around him. He never settled for 6 yards if 7 were needed. He was pretty darn good. Sure, he stared down his receivers at specific points in the game, and sometimes he throws with ZERO touch…but he made very few mistakes.

I will give him the highest praise I can give any Buccaneer QB – there were times he looked downright Brad Johnson-esque. The way he hung in till the last possible moment – in order to make sure he let a play develop or was able to ‘look’ a receiver open… I wouldn’t say he was mobile, but he certainly exhibited great escapability. I’d also say he’s definitely been listening to someone, specifically about footwork and mobility within the pocket. I’m not yet ready to annoint him with the franchise tag, but he showed enough grit, guile and determination to suggest he was willing to do whatever it takes to become the full-time starting QB.

I’m also NOT ready to write Josh McCown off yet either – as we STILL haven’t seen Jeff Tedford call Jeff Tedford’s offense. At this point, I think we have two pretty good back-up QB’s. The proof will be decided down the stretch. If Glennon continues to maximize his opportunity while McCown’s recovering, then Tedford returns to the sidelines, then we can get a look at McCown again within Tedfords offense…then Lovie will be able to have enough information to make the best move for the Buccaneers.

Afterall, isn’t the goal to win more than you lose? If so, it shouldn’t matter who we do that with…
