Murray Slipped On Big Kick

That odd-looking, low-driven 50-yard field goal, the one that clanked off the bottom of the left upright Sunday, was anything but normal for rookie kicker Patrick Murray.
The result was beautiful, the but the kick wasn’t.
Was it tipped, Joe asked Murray yesterday at One Buc Palace? The answer was, No.
Murray said he “slipped” because his shoe “studs didn’t hold” in the Heinz Field turf.
“But I had enough behind it anyway,” Murray said.
In some ways this is great news. For a guy to drill a 50-yarder on the road while slipping means he’s got a strong leg — and the football gods like him. Two good things for a kicker.

Still waiting on this kid to have a game that makes me feel good about having him here. Would’ve been totally fine with dumping Koenan and keeping Barth if we needed to save money. I mean, if we’re just doing 35 yard punts then I’ll go out there and give them a sweet bargain.

Still wondering why we got rid of Barth. And wondering why media doesn’t dig in to find out. I don’t feel comfortable with this guy at all.

I have a gut feeling Murray will work out fine. Irrelevant, but his name sounds like a good kicker to me.

I like Buccfan’s assessment!
The guy is a kicking machine and I am still disappointed that Lovie didn;t trot him out there in the first game for what was less than a 50 yarder (AND AT HOME!!)
But hey, we move forward and see that yes, he can boot it.
And unlike Matt Bryant, Barth has not been picked up as far as I can tell.

It was actually a 54 yard field goal. I agree with you we should have given him a shot, but let’s get the facts straight.

When he lined up for the kick, I was concerned about footing. Heinz Feild has one of the worst natural grass fields in the NFL. After Thanksgiving it is generally painted dirt until they re-sod the whole thing.

Barth was a GOOD kicker, not great, couldn’t really kickoff. He was coming off what was probably a major injury for a kicker to have (achilles). Perhaps he’s not as good as he was pre-injury. Whatever the case may be, no other team has picked him up.
