Steelers Played Like 1976 Bucs

The play of Bucs QB Mike Glennon helped make the Steelers look like the original winless Bucs.

The play of Mike Glennon helped make the Steelers look like the original winless Bucs.

Joe doesn’t know how many folks here were around to see the infant bumbling Bucs in their inaugural season. Going 0-14 says it all.

Awful, horrible, miserable, hapless. The descriptions are endless.

For folks who weren’t around to see the original Bucs, Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Herald suggests fans watched the old Bucs yesterday. Only the team was wearing black and gold instead of creamsicle.

If I had any nerve, I would have asked [Steelers coach Mike] Tomlin what he thought of his team’s execution. Maybe he would have answered the way old John McKay did when somebody asked the same question during the Buccaneers’ winless 1976 campaign.

“I’m in favor of it,” McKay said.

At times, the Steelers played like the ’76 Bucs. It started on the first series, when Cody Wallace lost Gerald McCoy for a sack on second down and nobody blocked Michael Johnson on third down, resulting in a Roethlisberger fumble and, soon enough, a Tampa Bay touchdown. From there, amid fits of competency that vaulted them to touchdown leads in each half, the Steelers seemed determined to make sure the Bucs retained hope.

That is what Joe loved about yesterday’s game. The Steelers kept the Bucs in the game with mistakes. Let them hang around. And the Bucs took advantage of that instead of Pearl Harboring their own efforts with their own mistakes.

Joe is not about to call the Bucs a good team, despite winning against a talented team. As Bill Parcells famously said, “You are what your record says you are.”

Joe did like how the Bucs kicked in the door when it was left ajar by the Steelers. This is a good sign; a building block sort of sign.

Listening to the Big Dog getting bent about Glennon being given credit for the win….haha…can’t admit he’s wrong.

[Gross violation of Joe’s long-standing rules. — Joe]

1 win does not mean anything except that we will not go 0-16. Not in the MGM, but he played well enough to get the win with some help from the Steelers of course. This team needs a lot of pieces still to be a complete team but a winning attitude starts with a win. If we were 0-8 and then got a win, it would not be as significant as at 0-3. It is hard to win in the NFL especially on the road. Now we need to put another victory up on our division rival Saints.

I was there in 1976 and the losses were not as painful as the Falcons game. We were happy to finally have an NFL team. In each game there was a slight glimmer of hope the team was building for the future. There was nothing positive about the Falcons game!

  5. Luther Says:

I don’t really see another clear win on the schedule but it’s still fun to listen to the ranting and raving. I personally would rather have a chance at one of the so called elite players at the top of the draft but it takes a whole lot of losing to achieve that.

What’s the matter can’t handle honest comments?

  7. Oahubuc Says:

Indeed. Please manage your expectations about this team. I’m sure it gave them some needed confidence and motivation, but the players definitely understand they didn’t exactly beat the Seahawks or Broncos. There are some real whippings coming up for us, I’m afraid.

  8. The Fuzzy Red Coin Says:

    sorry joe

Fuzzy…you should know better not to piss Joe off. That’s something I would never do. 🙂

You can be critical of Clear Channel employees, you just cannot go after them personally.

  11. Couch Fan Says:

I can’t help but laugh at that certain radio personality who is coming up with every excuse he can think of to discredit Glennon. To fk’ing funny.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Couch…well you know I’m not listening to him. That’s for sure. Although I have no idea who you’re talking about.

  13. Joe Dunn Says:

Played like 1976 Bucs?? I disagree.

I lived through those losses and the horrible period of late 1980s and early 1990s.

Ben R yesterday had a QB rating of 120……the old Bucs would have had a QB rating of about 30 or 40.

Mistakes and NOT making a few key plays cost them.

  14. Dan Says:

i missed the original comment but just a quick comment, how else would you go after an employee( read an individual) other than personally? corporately would not work. or did you mean it is their personal lives we are to not critique.

Because it sounds like you are saying we cannot critique individual employees, which seems to go against what I see here all the time, (just curious)

  15. Uncle Albert Says:

Does Steve Duemig actually know anything about assessing a quarterbacks play??????? Just love the way he always tries to bring up rankings and numbers from stat and ranking websites….. Who cares?? The dude won the game for us yesterday and deserves to be named the starter. Of course, if Duemig had his way we would still have the bum Freeman in here at qb…… SMH.

  16. Buccfan37 Says:

The Steelers played nothing like the first season Bucs. They had a lot of success gaining yards yesterday. The original Bucs would have lost close to that original 42-0 loss to the Steelers.

  17. RCH Says:

I think Glennon works the best in the hurry up. It would be nice if they can start to incorporate that more often during the game.

  18. Mike J Says:

Joe Dunn, yep. First downs & completed passes were something to stand up & cheer about in 1976.
Bit of hyperbole by the Pittsburgh press there.

Yeah, I agree. Then we won’t have to witness back to back delay of game penalties.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The Tampabaybucfan was a season ticket holder in 1976….let me put it this way…..we watched just to see a good play…hoping for a good matchup and not a blowout loss….a touchdown would be nice….a win….not in the cards!!!

But…..we did have an excuse of sorts….we were an expansion team…..keep in mind we hosted the NFC Championship in 1979 so….it didn’t take too long to see some success!!!

  23. Dewey Selmon Says:

No way Joe, Yesterday was game 4, The 76 Bucs didn’t score their first franchise td until game 4 and that was a danny reese fumble return. The 76 Bucs didn’t have a qb pass for 310 yrs and 3 td’s. I din’t think the 76 Bucs scored 24 in a game. the 76 Bucs were HORRIBLE! The head ball coach was 0-9 as a qb. The Steelers blasted us 42-0 I believe. The old AFC west…. those were nightmarish days for an 8 y/o. lol

Sorry Joe but your boy is the one who is making it personal. Just because his girlfriend is no longer and never will be an NFL QB again doesn’t mean it’s ok to call our current starting QB names. The guy is and most likely has always been a bully. One day he will get his comeuppance. I was bullied as a kid because I was a runt, then I hit my growth spurt and the bullies begged for me not to retaliate when I made them look like dwarves. It was great watching them squirm, even though I had no inkling to retaliate because I hate bullies.

  25. brett Says:

I understand that the Pittsburgh people are a little out of sorts after yesterday , but I was there for every one of the 1976 bucs games , and the play of Pittsburgh wasn’t in the same universe of bad play as them. major exaggeration. as for deumig, i’ll let my silence speak for me.

  26. rdbucfan Says:

So Joe you condone clear channel employees making personal attacks against bucs players but fans can’t say anything about your buddy. You sir are a hypocrite.

  27. BoltIsle Says:

Don’t care how it happened, just glad it did.

The Steel City Stunner clammed up their smug and arrogant fan base that thrives on having a sense of entitlement.

Love Brown’s comment about them being embarrassed.

  28. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

The 1976 game could have been 100-0.

  29. Tackleblockwin Says:

The Steelers play the 0-4 Jaguars next. If the Jags pull off the upset, Well…you can imagine.
