Gerald McCoy explains the Big Ben difference

Most of that movement in and out the pocket you see Ben Roethlisberger doing, it’s calculated and planned by the Steelers quarterback.

That’s the word from Tampa Bay manbeast defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, who served up a scouting report on Big Ben.

“You gotta get pressure up the middle because he’s fearless,” McCoy said of Roethlisberger. “You know, he drops back and he’ll sit the pocket. Most quarterbacks create because they have to; he creates because he wants to.

“The way he scrambles so well, it’s because he sits in the back and he lets the play develop, and then he’ll run around until something opens up and he’ll make a play. I mean not all the time, but he’ll do it. It’s about choice. He’s fearless. He’s fearless. That’s why he’s so successful.”

McCoy delivered that and more on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week.

One thing McCoy mentioned that concerned Joe a bit was McCoy’s talk of modifying his work at the line of scrimmage to accommodate his broken hand. Yes, hand-fighting and positioning are key for a defensive tackle. Joe is confident McCoy can adjust, but it might take him a game. That could be very troublesome Sunday, if the Bucs can’t get much from the other defensive linemen.

Da’Quan Bowers, Will Gholston and Scott Solomon really need to look like solid professionals. Larry English is out with a bad hammy, and Michael Johnson (who?) can’t be counted on to play.

ha ha. Our cast of pass rushers is a motley crue of turds.

For real. Can’t we get some MIchael Bennett type guy off of the scrapheap somewhere to rush ?

The secondary will continue to look lost until the quarterback isnt relaxed in the nice warm cozy va Jey jey type of pocket.

  2. DB55 Says:

I implore you all to revisit the Panthers and Rams games. Focus on mccoy and see what you see. What I saw was him getting handled by a rookie guard with some (not always) chips shots from the panther tackle or center. Mainly though just the rookie guard. In the Rams game he got OWNED by Joseph. Don’t get mad, just watch the film boys. What I found most interesting was that a few plays before mccoy (fractured?) his hand lovie pulled the entire front four out for 1 play. Oh to have been a fly on the clipboard.

Yes mr mccoy you’ll have to beat the guy in front of you or at the very least protect david so he can make the play. Remember mr McCoy “trust your eyes and your feet will follow”.

  3. Lynch Says:

And to think this guy is trying to get paid …DB55 said it best above though. Unfortunately, we will over pay him, that’s just what we do.

  4. PanthersSuck! Says:

Michael Strahan still looks like he’s in shape?

  5. RastaMon Says:

McPloy has a great scrapbook of pre draft…each years preseason press clippings…

Wow some coaching, I may have to lighten up on lovie..

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

I don’t have access to review past games. It seems you’re all saying McCoy aint what he’s cracked up to be as far as a premier player. That figures.

  8. Soggy Says:

I,m saying we need some coaching..and I am glad lovie is showing some leadership to the guys during the game..We need some passion on this team..

  9. BFFL Says:

There are 31 other teams that would make McCoy their starting DT today if given the chance.

  10. Warren Says:

The comments on here sometimes makes me (even more) ashamed to be a Bucs fan. Seems like dogging our most talented players out of town is the hallmark of the fans of this team

  11. Louis Friend Says:

If they don’t blitz often in this game, they’re screwed. If we had any semblance of pass rushing LB’s (aside from David), I’d switch to a 3-4 and make McDonald the NT and McCoy the LDE with one of the runts playing RDE. They suck so much we might be better off with an extra LB on the field. If it fails, so what? If they play base Cover 2 they have no chance.

  12. Soggy Says:

    @Buccfan37
    @BFFL

Maybe not today a starter, he is hurt, but I get your point.. People here call you out when they dont get you point.. look above at my comment and I was called out for trashing mcCoy, it was lovie I was glad to see coaching for a change to the whole line..

  13. buc4lyfe Says:

Sorry to state the obvious but getting stomped 56-14 won’t make you a better pass rusher. Guys like Bowers and gholdston might practice 10 times harder this week but lol of you have no pass rush moves what are you practicing. This team needs to get in the playbook, it’s not like we have the night life they have in new York of legalized weed in Denver. What’s holding these guys back that they look so lost

  14. teacherman777 Says:

    press coverage or die

we can’t receivers off the line anymore

even TEs need to chipped by our useless Des.

if our Des can’t sack anybody.

at least use them to smash greg olsen at the line

  15. Andrew 1 Says:

I’m with the rest of the bunch that say we should blitz, but it’s just not going to happen guys. Hate to beat a dead horse, but Lovie isn’t budging on how he plays defense. He’s had every opportunity to blitz and bring pressure, but save for a few times, he really hasn’t. It seems like he is just using this season as a way to indoctrinate his players into the Tampa 2.

I’s also kind of like what Rex Ryan went through when he first became the coach of the Jets. Remember his players couldn’t get pressure on the QB either, and teams were just killing his defense. But now that he’s had a few season to put talent on that line, they’re really humming in the front 7. The back half of they’re defense has been demoralized by injuries this season, but that’s besides the point.

  16. clafollett Says:

    @DB55

I’m glad you brought up McCoy’s (bad?) play in the first two games. I don’t have the time to rewatch but I remember think Gerald wasn’t excelling like I assumed he would. At the Atlanta game, I remember the shot of him sitting on the bench by himself and not up trying to fire up his(?) team. I didn’t realize his broken hand wouldn’t allow him to lead his (?).

I can on smile at what Sapp would be doing in that case…

  17. Zam Says:

    Big Dumb Ben

  18. Buc-O's 82 Says:

Manbeast ? Really Joe? I would hardly call someone that with the stats for 4,4 years in the NFL OF UNDER 20 SACKS & UNDER 100 SOLO TACKLES. Prove it on the field an not by the mouth

  19. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

I’m sure Sapp gave him some pointers on how to use his bad hand effectively and safely. Sapp has been in the same boat before. Arrrr….

  20. FanOfBucs Says:

    You are right Warren.

Some of these fans are very ignorant.

McCoy is one of the best at his position. Those who state the opposite are only exposing how clueless they are.

These people are just desperate to be heard.

  21. rayjay1122 Says:

I wonder if the Steelers are going to have a punter on the active roster this week. They won’t need him.

  22. rayjay1122 Says:

Yeah. Calling out individuals is pretty ignorant. There is no I in team. Also no DE, QB, WR, DT, RB, SS, FS, CB, LB, OT, OG, or C in team. There is TE in team though if they can get the ball to one. ASJ is back though, so now we have half of the team.

  23. Warthog Says:

Hahah! We have a hopeless team with gaping holes in talent and coaching, and fans wanna come at one of our only guys who consistently plays well? Hahaha! Oh man. You know the Bucs fanbase is traumatised when you see fans lashing out at a guy like McCoy. Damn. Get your heads straight people, McCoy is not the problem with this team, we have bigger problems to worry about.

We only have one or two guys on the team with legitimate elite talent, and fans gonna run em down cos they can’t singlehandedly win games for us? SMDH.

  24. DB55 Says:

So I’m ignorant and wrong but you cant rewatch the games, ok. I don’t need to be heard nor am I trying to run anyone out of town, as if I could.

I’m just an engaged fan with waaaaayyyyyyyy too much time and technology on hand.

I’ll leave it with this. I wanted to believe that 93 is the best 3 tech in the NFL. So I looked up his stats vs Suh’s stats. Both play on bad teams, better yet, not great teams (don’t want to ruffle any panties out there) and they both came into the league at the same time. I figured it would be neck and neck with one or the other just barely winning out.

Please search the stats and compare. If you can’t deal with the facts then idk what to tell you.

  25. Soggy Says:

All I got to say is I hope all this is not directed at me, if you think i was trashing mcCoy you are very wrong and please start at the top and read all my post carefully.. On this I will not back down..I am Glad to see some coaching from lovie..

  26. rayjay1122 Says:

    @soggy

My comment was not at you. After reading your posts, I do not think you were bashing GMC. My posts have been mostly sarcastic due to my disgust with the way the team plays. I also do not see who you may be thinking was calling you out.

  27. FanOfBucs Says:

“Lynch” and “Rastaman” are the people I’m talking about.

    Dorks.

  28. Architek Says:

McCoy should seek FA and go to another franchise that’s accustomed to winning – he deserves better than this mess.

  29. Soggy Says:

Sorry guys I am just having a bad day.. Peace..

  30. Trubucfan22 Says:

So it’s glennons choice to go down like a sack of potatoes instead of wanting to extend the play and give his team a chance? Great a guy who chooses to suck. Go bucs

  31. JT Says:

It’s mind blowing how awful our defense plays. Our Dline was might as well have not even been on the field. It was pitiful. Then you got our secondary who I haven’t seen so much as attempt to make a play on the ball. Our zone was a joke. Matt Ryan and Julio Jones were allowed to do what ever they pleased. I saw no adjustments and it was really troubling. save the Tampa 2 for third and long (if we can get that far) and let Verner and Banks get in the receivers face a bit. Send Lavonte David on a blitz every now and then to generate pressure and make the Steelers adjust. Do SOMETHING! if our defense dosent step up and our coaches are ineffective come game day it really Won’t matter if Glennon is starting or not.

  32. JT Says:

Against The Stillers, We won’t get a running game going until Glennon makes some throws/first downs. They’ll stuff the box all day until Our passing attack makes them adjust. This game will really test Glennons preparation and football IQ. Pittsburgh will be lineing up in a variety of different blitz packages and Glennon must know where the pressure will be coming from. I see lots of dinks an dunks to start off cause the Stillers will be going for the throat and try to hurt Glennon right away.

  33. Louis Friend Says:

Heh, I guess it could get worse. We could lose Glennon to injury, be forced to play Kafka – and pray for McCown to heal quickly. That’d be a nightmare.

  34. DallasBuc Says:

Louis- after all your whisling Dixie this whole offseason it’s nice to see you embrace the suck. Way to suck!

    Buccfan37 Says
“I don’t have access to review past games. It seems you’re all saying McCoy aint what he’s cracked up to be as far as a premier player. That figures.”

What gets me is that Tampa Fans would rather take DB55’s wprd for it than actually check the tape. No one bothers to see if he is right, or honest.

I have every game in digital format and I don’t see what he’s claimimg, but who cares? Tampa fans wanna moan and his claim helps them do it.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @JT

As to the secondary, that is all on the players. If you watch, guys are coming off their assignments too soon, assuming the ball is in motion elsewhere instead of sticking with their guys.

It’s part of the learning curve. They don’t yet trust their teammates to cover their own assignments. They have to learn to trust the system and then it will start to click.

  37. Kevin#1 Says:

ASJ will be playing tomorrow. All three of our dunkaneers. Hopefully the coaching doesn’t force the offense to run the ball half the game. I think a lot of times the run helps open up the pass, but other games I think you need the pass to open up the run just as much. I’d like to see them spread the ball around. Se always hear of Brees and Ryan throwing the ball to seven different receiving options….why don’t we ever try that??? Really pisses me off! Wish I could be even a little excited to watch the game tomorrow but I’m not. I can’t be excited until I see the coaches take the leashes off. This is not professional football the bucs have been playing. It’s Pee-Wee handcuff football. When your defense is as bad as ours and the coaches refuse to allow the offense to get in any kind of shootout then the white flag is basically being raised.

  38. Buccfan37 Says:

Bonzai… I’ve read more than one person’s opinion that McCoy is over rated. After all, it’s just an opinion, like yours.
