Glennon Play Will Shape The Draft

Ahh, the Bucs life. Already talking draft in September. Not good.
But that’s what happens when you’re 0-3 and two of the “easy” home games against backup quarterbacks are in the rearview mirror.
Enter new starter/former starter Mike Glennon, the guy Lovie Smith labeled “quarterback of the future.” The future is here, with Glennon starting tomorrow and, if the Bucs are wise, for the rest of 2014.
Former Bucs QB Shaun King, now of NBC Sports Network and Yahoo! Sports, says the new Glennon era is very much about “playing for the organization to not have to draft a quarterback in the first round.”
If Glennon can’t thrive, King said on WDAE-AM 620 this week, “the Bucs are forced into a first-round pick” of quarterback next spring.

“It’s up to Glennon,” King explained, saying all he has to do is perform well and stabilize the offense over the next two weeks and Lovie should stick with him.
Joe hollered left and right, high and low, for the Bucs to draft a quarterback this past offseason. It seemed the wise move, considering it was a new regime and a new offense. What better time to bring in a rookie QB? But the Bucs weren’t having any of that.
Yes, Joe agrees with King. If Glennon can’t clearly show he’s a quarterback to hang your offense on in the quarterback-rich NFC South, then the Bucs have no choice but to draft a QB or craft a blockbuster trade for a win-now arm (very hard to do).
There are also ripple effects there. If the Bucs do draft a quarterback in 2015, then likely would be wise to use another high pick on an offensive lineman.

I wish Glennon well also. I’m not anticipating spectacular play tomorrow from the QB position, but adequate enough to give the team a chance to pull out the win. If the rest of the team plays their best game, it can happen.

We’re seeing how our options are performing in the upcoming weeks. We’ll see how the rookies do.
I for one think Bortles performed admirably last Saturday. Would the Bucs have pulled the trigger with him there? Who knows.

Sorry Joe but Johnny Playboy er Football can’t even crack the starting lineup for the Brownies.
This coming year’s draft offers many more prospects that this past year’s crop.
The Bucs should NOT have drafted a QB this year. First let’s see what MG8 can do. Then if we need to draft, this year’s crop has better prospects, even if you rule out Mr Egomaniac the incredibly immature Jameis, what’s the next scandal Winston. Gawd I hope the Bucs don’t mess with him. I don’t care how freaking talented he is. He’s clearly a total head case. Yes young men make mistakes, but how many do overs does this man-child get before he’s actually held accountable for his actions.

I think the bigger problem was being married to a QB out of this years draft class that, for all intents and purposes, was pretty mediocre. I like Bortles but am slightly biased as I’m a UCF fan. Manziel is/was exciting but it’s looking more and more like he was a product of the system. Carr is meh. If there is more of a can’t miss type QB you get him. Mariota seems like one of those types of guys. I for one would not touch Winston. Can’t imagine once he gets some money in his pockets how is behavior is going to be.

@Tony – Joe also campaigned for Bridgewater. Bucs could have traded up for him easily. … Again, Joe hopes Glennon thrives and makes this a non-issue.

Don’t forget we need to get an impact pass rushing DE! If we have to use 1st rounder on a QB, will hurt chances of upgrading pass rush! Please shut the critics up MG8…for a variety of reasons!

..and when we draft a QB in round one and an offensive lineman in round 2, everyone will be crying about how stupid it was to not draft a DE. At this point the DE need is greater than OL, it would appear.

Don’t put it past Lovie to forego a QB in the draft if Glennon doesn’t prove himself. There are many other areas of need on this team and Lovie likes to rely on subpar QBs. I can see him going defense heavy in the next draft, in an effort to build the team the way he wants it. Defense first.

Even if we had Andrew Luck or Aaron rodgers. With the coaching and playcalling and horrible defense it would not matter. Until those things change I wouldnt give a shit if rhe bucs had a time machine and could go back and get John elway it wouldnt matter. mariota was crap last year and ok this year. this year’s crop is not better than last year’s…who else is there? hundley….lol
we needed to draft a qb last year and we are suffering now. crap, take one every year until it clicks.

I don’t care if Jameis Winston stole some crab legs and yelled out “f*** her right in the p****!” In fsu’s union. He’s by far the most talented quarterback in all of college football. He’s got insanely good pocket awareness, accuracy to spare, a POWERFUL arm, excellent vision, quick with his reads, great leader on the field/highly competitive, and mobile to boot. If he declares and we have the #1 pick, I’d be pissed if we don’t take him. If he’s not in this years draft, Mariota is a solid prospect too, although I’ve always been wary of quarterbacks who like to run as much as they like to pass, because they tend to get hurt. However if he can turn out to be the Rothlesberger/Russell Wilson type of Qb then I’d be more than happy with him. I’m just disappointed that we even have to talk about having the first overall pick.

As important as QB is nowadays, I’d draft like 7 QB’s. Keep the best, trade the others for proven talent.
Kinda like Rays do with pitchers (only you’d keep the good ones).

Joe, I’m sorry but our QB is not on this team. We’ve been this bad BECAUSE we don’t have a good QB. Not one game last year did we see anything from Glennon that would make me believe him to be a franchise guy. There is nothing wrong with a quality backup – esp if we end up with Mariota or Winston – who like to run around.
But this QB thing has to be addressed now buddy, bc it’ll take at least 1-2 year for our mystery QB to come into his own so every year we don’t get one is another 2+years lost…
It ain’t Glennon – so stop beatin around the bush with “we’ll be forced to pick a QB in the first.”
And as far as last year and drafting a QB @ 7… lol… Joe, after Bortles, everyone else was at best 2 rd quality. Unless of course you want to find ourselves in a Tannehill situation in 3 years… because if it’s Mo Money Mo problems Johnny football barking it’s not his fault but the franchises that he sucks, well, hello Sportscenter!…

I have a problem drafting a QB in the first round, unless there is a Luck in the draft ! I don’t see that happening! Which means if we draft a QB in first round we are reaching!!!!!!!!! Then in a couple of years we are in the same position as we are now. 2015 draft best player available !

I love Mariota. I live in Honolulu and they’re so proud of him here. The local news shows his Saturday highlights before they show the results of the University of Hawaii. I hope he wins the Heisman and I’ve seen him play probably 15 games. He’s great and will probably be a good qb in the NFL. I will root for him, no matter what team he plays for, but I sure as hell hope its not the Bucs if JW5 is available.
I think MM will be good but I KNOW JW5 will be a perrineal probowler. He’s a can’t miss talent like Luck or Manning. The risk of him doing something stupid and getting suspended in the NFL is significantly less than the risk that MM can’t adjust to an NFL offense.

Bryce petty has some very good, solid numbers, good character, and poise under pressure, and would be a great pick for any team who is need for a QB and would be an improvement over the ordained one L&L gave us. oh well could have,should have been addressed last year. we will wait and see, our spot in the draft will certainly dictate where and who we go for, although famous jameis is a top talent, his character issues scare me, I would shy away. but hey, he is young, and for a team in dire need for QB play, the bucs might pull the trigger. but I would almost venture to say, as long as lovie is in the picture, he will somehow, someway, screw this up also.
