The future is now.

The man who was the quarterback of past but not the quarterback of the present (for a few more days), who Bucs coach Lovie Smith deemed the quarterback of the future, will have a “good chance,” Lovie said, of starting Sunday at the Steelers in place of hobbled, turnover-prone Josh McCown.

As he did this spring at the draft when Lovie spoke glowingly about Glennon, Lovie resumed his love for the NC State product yesterday, lauding how he has handled the past 12 months.

“He is different, and from what I’ve seen is a team player, a veteran on how he’s handled the situation,’ Lovie said. “Mike came to work every day preparing – if you’re a part of a team, you should prepare like, if you’re in a backup role, ‘If I have to go the next play, I’m ready to go.’ That’s what Mike has done. “I’ve talked about what Josh has brought to the quarterback room and for Mike to see a veteran does it, this has only helped him and prepared him for this situation right now. He’s ready to go, Mike is one of the guys that went into the game without a lot of reps the last time we played and did a decent job, now having an entire week to get ready if he’s a starter, having a full week, he should be even more prepared. The football team feels good about Mike leading.”

In a way, it’s sad that Glennon has now played in two crappy systems in his first two years in the NFL.

His offense last year was so dialed back and dumbed down it was pathetic. Then he when he is running a no-huddle well against one of the top defenses in the NFL, Greg Schiano then throws in the towel claiming he never practiced it enough to continue against the 49ers.

Now, Glennon is taking over an offense with more potential weapons, but rudderless since Jeff Tedford is gone, possibly for good. As Jimbo Fisher said last week, it is a whole lot easier to ruin a quarterback than to develop one.

    All comes down to does the O line improve. I question the # of 7 step drops. Due to the lack of speed of our outside receivers. Big guys but not the quick off the ball speed guys. I think that’s way the QB has to take the long drops. To allow the outside guys time to run their routes. Which in turn puts more pressure on the O line to give the QB more time.

  2. Captain Stagger Says:

    It’s nice to see Joe recognize that there is a difference between a reason and an excuse. There are valid reasons Glennon hasn’t looked great, not excuses.

    Now if only joe could wrap his head around the idea that 19-9 is a personal stat, and 4-12 is a team stat. Now that would be real progress.

  3. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

    O.K.

    “The Cannon” has to show better performance than he did in the preseason.

    At this point, I’m looking just at “The Cannon.” I want to see growth as an NFL QB. I need to be convince that he is worthy of a MOB. I’m pulling for him just like any Bucs QB.

    The last game was so bad (specially the defense). I want them to win but I don’t care to waste my energy on being upset if they loose. The lack of effort as a total defense remind me of the last 10 weeks of the Raheem era.
    Coaching staff is not the problem this year defensively. When you are not executing the game plan as a player you will look lost and get toasted. The first two games were not as bad. So, I still trust in Lovie. This defense will take some time to master. But effort does not take time, it takes integrity.

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

    So what’s the over-under on how many times Glennon will be sacked on Sunday?

    Any truth to the rumor that the equipment guys are putting extra posterior padding in his uniform?

    Ah, but fear not, they have Bobby Rainey running the football.

  5. Biggun Says:

    Its ironic that Glennon started the 4th game of the 2013 season also. After the JF5 meltdown.

  6. Tony Says:

    You know what would help tremendously? Vincent Jackson NOT dropping the first few balls thrown his way seemingly every single game. I’m telling you, go back and review the tape. Last year (and this year) this guy has flat out killed our opening drives because of this. Quite frankly, unless he is out jumping someone and competing for a ball, he drops it.

    Joe,

    As a member of the media always looking for topics to report on, look into this. You don’t need to do more than watch the first quarter series for the Bucs since Glennon took over last year. Count the drops or catchable balls not caught by VJax in that time. It is disturbing and is a momentum killer. Thanks!

  7. passthebuc` Says:

    If the receivers are running proper routes, it will help. If they catch the ball, it will help, if they block and chip, it will help. if the line can give him a second, it will help. Glennon does get the ball out faster than Josh. He sees the field better than Josh. If he just takes the sack instead of throwing to the defense, the game will be close.
    However, lovie will not let him throw anything that is not totally predictable by the defense. When that happens, glennon will look bad, the bucs will look bad and your readers will start talking about drafting a qb.

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

    Who’s meltdown was worst? Josh Freeman with 2 td’s and 3 Int with 571 yards, or Josh McCown with 2 td’s and 4 Int with 420 yards?

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

    It seems the word mob has something sinister attached to it’s meaning. Like mafia being part of the mob, or the angry mob rioted in the streets. It’s not like one says a mob attended church today. I don’t recall anyone calling Glennon fans a mob before you did on this site Joe. Glennon has a lot of fans, how many is in a mob?

  10. Harry Says:

    @The Buc Realist Says:
    “…Who’s meltdown was worst?”

    IMO, Free was worse bc “we” saw so much more potential in him. “We” believed he had a chance to be a Franchise QB. I think with McCown, we “hoped”

  11. Casual Observer Says:

    I do think that Glennon is underrated by many. Could be wrong – as most seem to have been about McCown. He might bomb. But I think he had a very decent rookie year. A porous OL, thin group of WRs. He was running for his life much of the time. I hope he does well in Pittsburg. Give him some time to make plays, OL.

  12. Martinii Says:

    With Glennon starting, and Mc Cowan injured, what happens if Glennon gets hurt? Kafka is still on the practice squad. Maybe they feel Mc Cowan can handoff and run the ball in lieu of cutting or sending a player down for Kafka.

  13. MGMob Exterminator Says:

    I have a question to the Glennon Mob. Would you guys be willing to ride with Glennon and McCown another year if Mike plays exactly the way he did with Schiano? Efficient stats, but purely as a game manager that does not hurt the team, but does not help them either.

    As far as this topic goes, reasons, excuses, blah blah. Hopefully Glennon gets to start for at least 6-7 games and he needs to show improvement no matter what the situation. I am sure Joe is only a part of the Glennon mob if he shows improvement. If he again plays like the way he did last year, even if the situation he’s stepped into is bad, it would not matter.

  14. Biggun Says:

    ^^^^^^^ well after that stat comparison above between JF5 and JM12…. MG8 will have to rally the boys and get something going. Last year no offensive plan (to speak of) and the MERSA, now this year no offensive plan (at all) and the OC goes on medical leave…. we should be the poster child for the show HARD KNOCKS…

  15. Bucnjim Says:

    Glennon supporters want nothing more then to give the kid a fighting chance. If he gets it and fails there isn’t a person/fan here that wouldn’t want to draft a QB in the first round. Most of us are just tired of players like Michael Bennett moving on and having success with new teams. This shows either the system or the entire organization is failing us fans. Sometimes (not all the time) it’s the hard working blue collar player (Glennon) not the Flashy (RGIII) that turns out to be the best player. I’m just wishing that is the case here.

  16. MGMob Exterminator Says:

    @BucnJim: Bennett was a very successful player with us as well. He was a 9 sack guy, but his impact was far beyond that number. I get where you are coming from though. We want to make sure he isn’t a Steve Young that just needs more time to prosper. I hope he only gets what ever time he gets within this season to prove what he is worth though.

    There are some among the Glennon mob that are already saying that he deserves another year and we not draft a QB. The Exterminator is here to exterminate these ridiculous comments. These plebs are so used to mediocrity at QB position that they keep bringing up the Brees example to prove Glennon could mature into an explosive franchise signal caller as well, when there are many examples of QBs not maturing beyond a point.

  17. MTM Says:

    There is a fundamental problem with the Bucs offense. The O-line is horrible and both McClown and Glennon are not mobile by any means. Yes McClown is more mobile but I just don’t see it at this point. There has to be more plays designed to roll the QB out of the collapsing pocket or it will be the same result. The passing threat opens up the running game and right now they have zero passing threats.

  18. Hillary_BlowsGoats Says:

    All the nice labels and twisting of facts will never change the fact 8 has mediocre talent, ZERO Mobility and a horrible O-line. Unless the defense figures it out ASAP and becomes an above average unit 8 will not succeed. We need a QB who can take over a game and WIN it. Even the most loyal mob members has to realizes 8 is not going to take over games. More importantly 8 has to learn how to play his best ball in 4th qtr which he has NOT done to date.

    Excuses and reasons for not WINNING are a complete waste of time. You either win the game or lose it.

    Bottom line bucs need a qb future and he is not on current roster.

    Efforts without results are meaningless.

  19. Skyline Crew Says:

    @MGMob Exterminator,

    I think Glennon did just fine last year. You guys are just upset that he didn’t throw for 400 yds a game. Hopefully, he will go vertical a little more this year, but if VJAX is dropping the ball are you going to blame Glennon or VJAX for his end of season vertical stats?

    To your question about going with Mike another year, I say yes. McCown is done in my eyes. Only reason he is still here is because Kafka is far worse. After the season I expect to see McCown gone and Mike is the starter. We will draft a QB for a backup/development position. I’m not seeing any QBs that would be a good FA. That is unless Arizona lets Palmer go. That would be an alright pick up as he likes to air it out. However, I still think we draft a QB to sit for a year or maybe more depending on how Glennon does.

  20. flmike Says:

    Here’s my take…
    Let Glennon air it out, there is nothing to lose. VJAx, Evans, ASJ (shld be back), Myers, Murphy….just line them up and force Pittsburgh to cover them, this pulls Palomalo out of the box as well as forcing their DBs who aren’t very good to cover guys 6 inches taller than they are.

  21. james west Says:

    well old stoneface sure did pack the praise on the steelers, sounded like to my untrained ear, he was already sublimely getting the fans ready for another loss. also he may start glennon(may not) but if mike does not light it up, to a point where it would be suicide for his coaching career, to replace him with mcclown, then it won’t matter. in my opinion even with a win. because of his stubborn , unbending philosophy of not being able to admit his mistake (,in his choice of QB.) like I say if mike does not have a peyton manning-brady – performance , than you can be rest assured, we will see ole josh the following week, no matter if his stats are better or not. and this is why in my opinion stoneface, has no business coaching this team.

  22. Zam Says:

    Another exciting 4-12 season! Thank goodness we didn’t draft a quarterback.

  23. Skyline Crew Says:

    Only problem is that Brady hasn’t had a Brady performance in a long time. He gets around 200 yds sure, but he isn’t getting 300 yds a game.

  24. Harry Says:

    @flmike Says:
    “…line them up and force Pittsburgh to cover them…”

    See Mike, this is why you and I are not NFL coaches. I agree with your suggestion; I really don’t understand why we aren’t already doing that. But Lovie is paid millions$$$ to call “run, run, run, punt” plays. We apparently just don’t understand the game, lol

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    I don’t buy it…but I really don’t see any other choice on the roster.

  26. Hillary_BlowsGoats Says:

    Gentlemen you can’t air it out when the O line can’t block and the QB has zero mobility.

  27. Skyline Crew Says:

    @BlowsGoats,

    You must not have watched the game last Thursday then. Glennon did just fine moving in the pocket. He even rushed for 19 yds on 3 attempts. You should have seen it.

  28. Hillary_BlowsGoats Says:

    Skyline

    Nothing personal but if you believe 8 has good mobility you are either delusional or a relative of 8s. A few scrambles does not equal mobility. On those plays you mentioned the defense all but dared him to run and he did. Don’t think for a minute he will get away with that against Pittsburgh. 8 is what he is a decent backup not an elite qb that can not win a game on his own. Hell until he plays well in a 4th qtr he is not even a reliable backup. I hope he proves me wrong but he won’t.

  29. Skyline Crew Says:

    Hillary,

    I was just giving you stats since you said he had ZERO mobility. He does have mobility and he moves around in the pocket. Just because he isn’t RG3 who cares. Peyton Manning doesn’t run everywhere either. We should just worry about having a QB that doesn’t throw interceptions before you wish for a QB that can get you 100 yds rushing.

  30. 19 - 9 Says:

    Lets go Glennon!

  31. MGMob Exterminator Says:

    @Skyline:

    Glennon can take off for a few yards when he sees open space. But the more important aspect of mobility comes within pocket to evade pass rush with subtle moves, for that a person needs to be nimble/agile which Glennon isn’t.

    Also you are already making excuses for Jackson dropping passes, wtf. In fact Jackson made Glennon put up better stats by making some crazy acrobatic catches off poorly underthrown balls. Either way, like someone else said Glennon has to change his game managing tendencies and take the burden of scoring on himself instead of hoping for running game to pick up or defense to make stops and turnovers. Until he does that he isn’t a worthy QBoTF material. For all the bashing McCown gets btw, the guy tries and effs up. I with the 24 year Glennon did the same and I would be more optimistic.

  32. Skyline Crew Says:

    So I say that VJax dropped some passes, which he did and we all saw it last week and I’m making excuses? If VJax continues to drop passes they won’t have Glennon or any other QB throwing down field. It will continue to be short passes that they know will be caught. Not an excuse just a fact.

    The one thing you don’t need to worry about is Glennon taking then sack, he will and there will be plenty.

  34. buctebow Says:

    8 is just double zero’s turned on their head, just like Glennon will be Sunday. If the Oline plays like last week, Kafka will be our new starter, as Glennon will just be a bloody spot on the grass.
