Is Murphy-Owusu Swap Bad News On V-Jax?

September 23rd, 2014

LouisMurphyIn a surprise move today, the Bucs cut wide receiver/kick returner Chris Owusu and re-signed Louis Murphy, who was cut before the season after suffering a back injury from a nasty preseason hit.

Joe believes this doesn’t bode well for the immediate future of Vincent Jackson.

FOX Sports reported Jackson broke his wrist in the Atlanta-Bucs debacle, but the Bucs have yet to confirm or deny the report.

Murphy, however, is much more suited to the Jackson role in the offense, versus Owusu, who seemed to be mostly an underneath receiver. Joe suspects the Bucs signed Murphy because they expect Jackson to miss time and want at least one experienced receiver available.

Jackson hurt.. WHAT.. Man I dont know if it is even safe to Watch a bucs game anymore..Might go blind..uh

  2. Kevin#1 Says:

These injuries are un-real…..I never thought last year would happen this year but it is…..AGAIN! I am surprised they didn’t bring Streeter back before Murphy. Hearing of his good camp he sounded just like Vjax without the butterfingers. Oh well who really cares anymore this season was obviously over before it began and now we all get to sit and hope another year

But don’t worry Bucs fans “The Cannon” will save the season…

  6. Soggy Says:

@RastaMon, The white coats are at my door..Just going to let them take me..lol

  7. NewTampaChris Says:

You mean that the guy they cut is more suited to the role of a #1 receiver? Let’s face it — if your OC, QB and #1 receiver are all down, you’d better have Sapp, Brooks, Lynch and Kiffin on your D.

  8. ElioT Says:

    What a s**t show!

Why did they cut this guy four weeks ago? He busted his ass in the preseason and took two big hits back to back on his last two catches!

May we never hear Owusu’s name again.

How bad are these guys at both talent/need evaluation and preparing for the inevitable rash of injuries.

    Good god.

    Go Yucs!

  9. Louis Friend Says:

It could also mean Owusu sucked and they acknowledged it by bringing back the guy they cut him over.

  10. BucBob1 Says:

Unbelievable!…Is there anybody else hurt, that we should know about too!

  11. buc4lyfe Says:

I’m almost excited the bucs are headed for 1st overall pick just because it’s the only way to crush this delusional MGM. My only worry is when was the last time bucs hit on a first round pick that came in and took the league by storm? Not once in this decade. Who were the last dominant picks…. Our last two hall of famers? We draft far too many one hit wonders

Can you still get the NFL Sunday ticket thru play station for half price? I’m going to need more choices of games to watch.

    Yo Joe

No press conference today? Didn’t see it posted on the app.

  18. WalkdaPlank Says:

Pretty soon Joe is going to be on IR.

  19. rayjay1122 Says:

Poor Murphy. Back injury then brought back for more misery. Hey, by the way, there was one player for the Falcons who was even more irrelevant than any of the Bucs……the Falcon Punter.

  20. Tye Says:

@Soggy~ “Might go blind”… Or have a heart attack, a stroke, nervous breakdown, alcohol addiction, drug addiction, put on suicide watch…

They might need to start putting a disclaimer on the screen before every Bucs game for their fans…LOL

  21. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Wow is this team snake bit!!! The franchise player goes down. The middle linebacker is out. A starting defensive end is out. The OC is out. I won’t mention losing the starting QB because most folks think that is a positive. But how about the starting running back. And now the best WR on the team? Wow!

I love GMAC as a person and respect his talent. But Tony Dungy used to have a great saying. The best “ability” one can have is AVAILability. If you’re not available then it doesn’t matter how talented you might be. With this in mind, as much as I love GMAC and respect his talent, I’m completely unimpressed with his “availability”. Is the franchise really ready to pull up the Brinks truck and unload boatloads of cash on a player who has played what % of snaps since he has been drafted? Just askin’.

  22. rayjay1122 Says:

I say bring back the Tampa Bay Breeze and let them play the Steelers. It would be at least fun to watch even if they lost and they have something in common with the Bucs…..a whole bunch of BUSTS.

  23. Pelbuc Says:

Bucs don’t need a QB, OC and WR. They need a witch doctor, santero and an exorcist. Man! We’re back in the dark ages of Yucs football, except now we have more hedious uniforms. Glazers will stay the course with L&L. I just hope they can find some decent players in the next couple of years to get to at least some level of competence. But without a QB, in today’s league there will be no future. As for Tedford, I pray for a speedy recovery. We were all curious to see how his offense would work, but frankly, I don’t think they have the right players to run it anyway.

  24. SAMCRO Says:

Maybe they plan on playing Murphy at #1, as Evans remains at #2, and VJax moves to the slot. JMO That would mix things up a little plus VJax has played really well in the past when he played the slot. With VJax, and ASJ taking up residence in the middle of the field, and a bonafide burner at #1, and a real actual sleeper at #2, is exactly what this team needs. VJax doesn’t have the legs to stretch the field any longer but he has a legitimate catch radius to play the slot.

Give MG8 and the receivers some time to operate and you’ll see what a tall pocket QB can do. I’ve seen him throw a legitimate 30 yard frozen rope or a 70 yard low arc bomb that lands as soft as a baby “AFlac”. Hopefully he has become better at reading the defenses, and if given his share of time to operate, will deliver us our first win.. All this and we still need our D to show up.

  25. Soggy Says:

@Tye, Ya, as a bucs fan we have to be very careful, very careful..

  26. Andrew 1 Says:

Injuries have been really high this season, not just for this team but the majorities of teams in the league. Not sure what’s the culprit, but It might be the lack of padded practices. These guys just aren’t getting hit often enough in practice to be able to handle it during games, would be my guess. Whatever it is, somethings got to be done about it.

  27. ander Says:

joe you are overeacting . vincent jackson already said he will play. i think it just means that we might try jackson or evans in the slot because herron is terrible and so was owusu. go murphy. lets go bucs

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Our season is an example of when bad luck meets bad talent meets bad health meets bad coaching meets bad karma. It is absolutely mind boggling to think of all the things that have gone wrong within this organization over the last few years. Although much of it could have been avoided, there is a lot that really couldn’t have. It really just feels like it is one thing after another with this franchise.

I feel like we need a witch doctor or something. Maybe we need Tim Tebow. Now I know he can’t actually play QB, but you have to admit, when he was with the Broncos, crazy things happened to allow them to win. Perhaps if we sign him, the other 3 QB’s in our division will get hurt, and we will win games in the same manner as the Broncos did. At this point, I don’t think we could do much worse than 56-14. Just throwing that out there.

  29. SteveK Says:

    Buc4lyfe,

What’s delusional about the MGM? We want Glennon to start, now that the season is over. If Glennon plays us to the #1 overall pick, after 13 games , them he deserves to be replaced.

We need to take a page from the Rams’ book, and trade rape QB hungry teams.

  30. Tackleblockwin Says:

No biggy. VJAX is just fine with one hand.

  31. BucFan20 Says:

No big surprise. Glennon already had good connections with Murphy before he got hurt.

  32. poorglennon Says:

Defense giving up 80% competition to opposing qbs. That has to be a record

  33. Jon Says:

Shock, draft picks are bad. Think about it we drafted two offensive lineman. Traded up to grab one even, both can’t win a starting job at right guard? Herron is terrible, they don’t want to admit it and again we spent more than any other team in free agency and are worse! These two can not evaluate talent. I can at least evaluate that they can’t!

  34. BucGator Says:

    Might as well sign Tebow

  35. DallasBuc Says:

Hawaiian- go ahead and add bad talent evaluation and bad decision-making to that litany of miserables you laid out.

  36. sam Says:

Sam believes this doesn’t bode well for Jacksons long time future either. I think its safe too safe say him along with goldson, bowers, clayborn, and possibly barron and cassillas will be gone next year. Bet on it.

  37. poorglennon Says:

L and L will be fired if we don’t win a game. This wasn’t supposed to be a rebuild. Every team has injury’s. I’ve seen some bad Buc’s games over the years. But that game Thursday was something else. The Jags and Raiders would kick the snot out of us. The defence is just brutal. Shiano’s team never quit like this. Players feed off the coach. Lovie just looks like huckaberry hound. On the verge of tears. Like Andy Reid with the Eagles in the end. Hard to feed off a look of panic and worry. Many media types had the Buc’s being a surprise team this year. Or at least pegging us for 7-8 wins. So if the team on paper should win 7 games. Coaching or lack there of must be to blame.

  38. poorglennon Says:

Is it just me or does it seem like the Buc’s have a universal offensive playbook. That every coach just passes along. Screen pass pfffffff no way it’s not in the playbook. With every pass play the “if it”s not there…checkdown” option is highlighted. Playbook consists of 100 run play’s, 96 ten yard pass plays, 2 pass plays 20-30 yards and 2 over 30 yards. Also don’t forget that trick play. That is to be attempted no more than once every decade.

  39. Jon Says:

Sam. Add Michael Johnson, Evan bad snapper D-smith, Mankins salary and performance, Myers, and this years later round picks. Bet that too

  40. DallasBuc Says:

Jon- while I agree those too should be gone don’t think any of those players acquired through draft or FA by do-no-wrong Lovie and his lapdog Licht they are guaranteed to stay. These two are not about to admit they cannot evaluate talent by cutting the same untalented hacks they just picked up and paid. Too arrogant for that!

  41. willie d Says:

Bring Eric Page back. He had some nice returns last year, would suspect he would only be better this year.

  42. Hawaiian Buc Says:

While it’s convenient to pile on Lovie and Licht right now (and they deserve a lot of blame), who exactly are you going to replace these guys with? As bad as some of them have performed, there isn’t too many guys walking the streets that are better than Barron, Goldson, Myers, etc. It’s very easy to say get rid of these guys, but very hard to find replacements. This is the problem with bad drafting, which is (not as of yet) the fault of Lovie and Licht. It’s still 3 games in to a brand new scheme on both sides of the ball, so let’s not go burning the place down quite yet. As I said yesterday, you can’t keep firing coaches every year, or even every 2 years. There isn’t one organization that does that with any level of success. At some point, you have to stick with who you have if for nothing else to show future coaches that they will be given a chance. That sucks for us as fans in the short term, but the answer is not to keep firing coaches. As bad as we want someone to pay for the huge crap of a product we’ve been all forced to look at, we have to just stick it out. You can make up whatever reason you want to disagree, but it’s reality. Lovie isn’t going anywhere.

  43. bucsqb12 Says:

Get VJax healthy then trade him if you can. He’s not in the future plan. Freeman being a bust has set this team backwards by a good 5 years. VJax was signed to complement Freeman. That’s obviously over now. Get what you can for him and pray Evans is the real deal. Ill hold my breath….and my beer

  44. nate Says:

Yes I hear vincent jackson might goto browns via a trade… rumor is a second round pick…

  45. Brian Says:

    I think you’re over-thinking it.

  46. Brian Says:

Someone referred to Glennon as MG8…I guess that’s a thing now?

  47. iamkingsu Says:

AGAIN! Its 2014 Lovie needs to adjust to the time of sports science. He overworked his players this offseason in the heat training at the hottest part of the day. A lot of our players are out with broken bones they are not tearing anything like acls or Achilles which you can’t prevent because they are freak accidents. He overworked our players all off-season.

  48. Kevin Says:

Maybe we should grab Michael Sam from the Cowboys practice squad. Our pass rush couldn’t be much worse with him and he wasn’t too bad.

  49. AdamBomb418 Says:

At least we are trying to do something about the talent on the roster even if it’s a lateral move. It’s better than staying stagnant.

  50. Zam Says:

so Owusu is your third receiver and you cut him 3 games in? To replace him with a guy you already cut?

If Lovie had any eye for talent, he’d know what to look for in practice and training camp.

They must have been smokin’ a lot of somethin’ in that basement.

  51. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    NewTampaChris Says
“You mean that the guy they cut is more suited to the role of a #1 receiver?”

Mind you, this is just theory, but if I were coach and I had an injured player that could comeback for game 4 OR be placed on IR at the time of preseason cuts, I would give the player the option of a cut and resign so he could play again sooner.

Maybe that was the reasoning behind it.

  52. BUCSPHAN_1 (John Rindosh) Says:

I feel like Lovie will sit V-Jax just like Doug Martin because he uses injuries to bench his players……..You watch with rainey’s bad performance last week all of the sudden Martin’s knee will be fine. If he is pissed at you Lovie will say your hurt……..UGH another long season

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Or…Martin’s knee could actually heal up.

I don’t know if it’s a thing but just like VJax, GMC, LVD, ASJ etc… it’s easier to type. Especially when you are posting from your phone.
