Adjusting On The Fly

September 23rd, 2014

lovie 0916

Yes, Joe is tired of beating a dead horse of a dead horse. There is no question the Bucs played like horse manure last week in Atlanta.

It makes Joe wonder what was going on in Lovie Smith’s infamous suburban Chicago basement. He had hoped to have Jeff Tedford come in and run a multi-faceted offense, leaning on the run, but equally able to throw when needed to multiple targets all over the field in what they bragged was an “up-tempo” offense.

That offense never got on the tracks. First, it was the injury to pass-catching running back Charles Sims, then Tedford’s health issues — frankly, Joe doesn’t expect Tedford back this year; no insight, just reading the tea leaves — and juggling the offensive line, and then injuries to Doug Martin and Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

Still, the Bucs had Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans available Thursday. With so many injuries to your defense, former Lovie coaching colleague with the Bucs, Herm Edwards, wondered aloud why the Bucs didn’t try to win a shootout, and believes the offensive makeup of the Bucs is foreign to Lovie’s football philosophy.

Edwards explained this in detail with the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, heard exclusively on “Mad Dog Radio,” part of the family of sports channels on SiriusXM Radio.

Herm Edwards: The defense didn’t help [Josh McCown]. This is a team where, Lovie doesn’t want to throw the ball over 30 times. He wants to run it. He wants to play Buc Ball, slow the game down and play good defense. But the defense let him down.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: See, that’s the problem. That’s the problem with Tampa, though Herm — I don’t want to spend too much time talking about a team that is 0-3. But that is the problem with Tampa. Their offense, their strength, is McCown throwing the ball and those good receivers. Their strength is not the kid [Bobby Rainey] running the ball without Doug Martin, and playing defense. Their strength is trying to outscore Atlanta and that doesn’t suit Lovie. So the personnel of the team does not suit what the coach wants to do.

Herm: Well, you see, I agree. I agree. Here’s this: [Thursday night] going into that game I said this: Due to the fact he had three or four starters on the defense out, and he is in a situation where Atlanta, we really don’t know how good their defense is. Now, when you think about the games [Atlanta] has won, they didn’t play high-powered offenses at all. But this [Bucs] offense has the ability to throw the ball down the field. If you are smart, get into a shootout. Make it who can get to 30 the fastest. Don’t worry about trying to play defense. But that didn’t happen at all.

Now, Joe is strictly speculating here, but had Tedford been healthy all along, would he have had a strong enough voice and influence to tell Lovie, “Hey, we are going to air it out this game.” Joe guesses Marcus Arroyo has no such clout.

It did make sense to go Air Coryell. The Bucs were facing a potent Atlanta offense without Gerald McCoy and and without Mason Foster and without Adrian Clayborn and without Michael Johnson (who?). They were essentially walking into a buzzsaw.

And we all saw the gory results. Yeah, it’s nice to say “We’re going to run the ball,” and that’s fine. But playing one-dimensional football sooner or later sets you up for an ugly trap.

  1. RastaMon Says:

    Hey… Lovie…your fly is open….

  2. Architek Says:

This is just to sensible – why would you adjust when you can simply stay the course and go 0 – 16? (playing Dungy ball)

  3. sho nuff Says:

joe i honestly beleive they know what they’re doing… you’re there…does it look like there is a plan? or do the just do drills

  4. "that guy" Says:

    lol.

  5. billy buckaroo Says:

I remember years ago watching Ditka send in plays to McMahon and then McMahon would run a different one and you could watch Ditka rant on the sideline until the play turned out to be a big gainer. They asked McMahon about it and he said that the play Ditka sent in hadnt worked all day and there was no point in running it again.

The Bucs are at that stage.
No point in doing what they been doing again as it hasnt worked yet.
I hope Glennon figures it out like McMahon did and calls something else when these “no chance” plays come in.

  6. Tom Edrington Says:

The only “adjustments” Lovie can make is to push it to the left or right, if you know what I mean.

  7. DallasBuc Says:

Lovie is no Ditka. Glennon is no McMahon. These Bucs are not those Bears.
This argument is not serving a purpose.

  8. Dean Says:

It’s pretty clear, that the Bucs are snake-bit. You lose your 2nd and 3rd round picks, the whole center of your defense, McCoy and Foster, some of your FA’s look weak and ineffective and your QB looks lost and inefficient and the WR’s can’t get separation and have the dropsies. Add in Martin is out and his backup looks good, when he isn’t fumbling. Now, after 3 weeks of unimaginative (see predictable) offense, we lose the man who created it all (Tedford) indefinitely! This sucks….big time!

  9. Louis Friend Says:

I don’t see them airing it out at all this season. They’re determined to play ball control, also known as an excruciating death. Since they’re not a power team, this is doomed to fail. Just like everything else that’s happened to them this season.

It just gets worse and worse.

  10. meh Says:

Wow. I didn’t realize anyone, anywhere, believed we could win a shootout with Matt Ryan given this team. We have 2 big receivers who are dropping balls, one fast shifty receiver that is dropping balls, no qb, and an offensive line that looks.. well.. bad. That is not a recipe for winning shootouts.

All the critiques of not being able to win playing Buc Ball with no defense are still completely true.

I just don’t see this team winning much. This season is already flushed and September isn’t over yet.

  11. ShutTheBucUp Says:

If we lose in embarrassing fashion on Sunday we better tank the rest of the season. Might as well make it worth our while.

  12. Rob Says:

Here’s a thought, how about you play good defense AND pass the ball. I’m so sick of these coaches who want to be really good at one thing.

The teams that win Super Bowls are usually good at the whole thing.

  13. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Adjustments are for the weak-minded. Just ask Schiano.

  14. RastaMon Says:

until otherwise…I am being open minded….

  15. Flmike Says:

Schmuck Ball is more like it….

  16. Biff Barker Says:

Old school/fool of a head coach is going to appease the disgruntled owners and fans with a couple of series passing the ball.

Then he’s going to right back to who he’s always been.

  17. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- how do you like being called a traitor on the radio by the “big dog?” for asking for an end to the McCown experience?

  18. Buddhaboy Says:

Cack ball. Through and through. Why cant they forge their own identity, instead of trying to relive the “old day”. Take the roster you have and see what they are.

Cack Ball is what we have.

  19. Bucamania Says:

I don’t want to spend too much time talking about a team that is 0-3.

LOL that’s exactly how the rest of the country feels about this dumpster fire of an organization.

  20. SAMCRO Says:

If the plan is to “air it out” then they need to start incorporating some designed roll-outs, moving the pocket, slide and utilize mass protection by using TE’s as blockers. Go 3 WR sets only, move Evans to #1, Owusu #2, V-Jax to the slot, using the RB’s as a check down or a bailout. By the way, V-Jax has always owned the nickel, look it up!

  21. Bogiedr Says:

    Can we get Herm?

  22. ElioT Says:

Regardless of how much Lovie believes in the old ways of good defense and ground and pound; if he can’t change and adapt to the modern NFL with all the rules favoring the passing game, then he might as well just retire because he’s an idiot.

We have to take shots down field whether our WRs can catch or not. You’ve got to make the defense cover these guys and get some calls from the Refs.

    Go Yucs!

  23. OB Says:

    Joe

I can’t help but believe that a major disagreement between Tedford and Lovie is the real reason he is on medical leave or else they are lying about what is wrong with him.

  24. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Old coaches don’t learn new tricks. Hoping that Lovie wakes up tomorrow with a different approach is like hoping the Glazer boys will learn how to attract front office and coaching talent to Tampa. Just ain’t gonna happen.

  25. DallasBuc Says:

Who would have thought 9 months ago that there would be so many wishing we had Schiano back? Takes a special kind of bad…
It’s a Bucs life in a brown paper bag!

  26. PRBucFan Says:

    Lol a major disagreement?

I love these stupid conspiracy theories.

  27. james west Says:

aaaaaargh. HMS glazer, her mast broken, with gaping holes fore and aft, alas her crew weary and beaten, had not a hope, as the cannon fire lighted the night air, their hopes vanquished and the stench of defeat hung in the nights air. their first officer, had been struck with a deadly wound, forcing the unrelenting captain (old stoneface) to turn to another. as his steely eyes and tight lipped demeanor scanned his once mighty crew, their was but one hope to steer this vessel back to safe harbors, Young Mr glennon, yes he and he alone, would ole stoneface put his banner of trust upon. with no quartermaster as his guide the young lad lays a course for their next battle….. to be continued!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. PRBucFan Says:

No one is wishing we have Schiano back but you.

We could easily be 2-1 right now.

BLOW OUTS HAPPEN ITS THE NFL, lol all these drama queens including Joe are hilarious.

Had the blow out happen in week 1 and we had 2 close games after most of you would be sinning a different tune. Or ATLEAST not so damn dramatic.

    Perspective people.

  29. PRBucFan Says:

Time to spend my time in the less dramatic lol.

    Peace out peeps.

  30. Soggy Says:

    More brainfarts lovie

  31. RastaMon Says:

^^^ Mrs.Majors 1964…gies you an A+…and she was tougher than the Bucs D

  32. Louis Friend Says:

    PRBucFan,

Non stop losing does that to people. And they’ve found 3 different ways to lose those 3 games. This team has 2-14 stamped all over it.

Trying to view it optimistically? Good for you – I’m just enjoying the tire fire of this football team now. Can’t be stopped, but the flames are interesting.

  33. jo mama Says:

You cant blame any losses on injuries.

We lost to a second and third string back up quarter backs.

    fire lovie.

  34. JBuc Says:

If you want Schiano back you’re a dope. He was fired because he lost his team and they were regressing. This idea that the game has passed Lovie by and that the schemes he is running are archaic are ridiculous. Carolina runs the exact same defense and has been a league leader for several years now. With the amount of new players on this team it is comparable to an expansion team. Again, 40 new players on a 53 man roster. Practice time severely limited by CBA and a OC with health issues.

We were competitive in the 1st 2 games with opportunities to win both. Admittedly, Thursday sucked but I think it was more of an anomaly then a trend.

  35. Louis Friend Says:

@JBuc – and yet here they are 0-3.

And you know what? 0-3 is going to feel pretty good in 3 weeks. They aren’t going to win a game for a while. Injuries or not, this is NOT an expansion team. Nothing like it. That is not an excuse they get to use. Maybe the Atlanta game is an anomaly (let’s hope so) – BUT – they are not improving. They aren’t young on defense so we can’t blame youth. They aren’t lacking talent at many positions. They were lacking fire and heart on Thursday. Maybe they’d beat us to death for saying it – but they looked scared, unprepared and were rocked mentally and lost their composure.

Those things don’t get fixed quickly. Those are soft as a team. And that’s not going to change during this season. Whatever they need for leadership they obviously aren’t getting from the current team. Players, coaches, whatever – it’s a group failure and it’s more than just scheme.

  36. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Hey Hey Tampa Bay! Bucs know how to shiiiiiine!

  37. T-DUB Says:

I havent said much bc of the brutal loss in ATL, but i gotta say…

im thoroughly dissappointed on the offense. I expected, like everyone else, to see us THROWING DOWNFIELD.

Not checking to 3rd,4th options. I, like everyone else, am 100% dissappointed. I know lovie has a ‘plan’, but guess what..

The ship is going in the wrong direction L&L.. time to change coarse and right this ship!

    Go Bucs!

  38. lightningbuc Says:

Oh Wow! Now practice time, which is the same for ALL teams, is an excuse for the turd sandwich we are being fed. Anyone proclaiming that is the true DOPE!

  39. DallasBuc Says:

PRBuc- I have not called for Schiano but he clearly is missed by many on here these days. Sugarcoat this disaster of a football team all you want. Just remember that all offseason I sounded the alarm and you sugar coated then like you are now.
Put your head back in the sand PRB.

  40. ScapegoatSchiano Says:

Just know when it is third and seven on the nine yardline in the red zone…THROW THE DAMN BALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  41. Chef Paul Says:

I was really only happy with the Lovie hire, because of Tedford. Everybody knows you cant trust Lovie with anything offense. Now he’s going to be over-riding Arroyo like Schiano did with Sully. And probably has been. Without Tedford, in my eyes, Lovie’s chance of success drops offs. Not that it was high right now anyways.

  42. JBuc Says:

LightningBuc- when a new coach comes in with new schemes and new players they are immediately behind teams with established coaches, systems and players in place. For that reason, I believe they actually got an extended minicamp under the CBA. However, it is not nearly enough time to bring an entirely new team up to par with top teams.

Not an excuse, just fact. Tell me, have you ever run a team before?

  43. Brent Says:

What sticks out to me we got a talented defense with a couple injuries and a defensive guru hc but falcons could have hung 60+ on us easy. You don’t see that with Rex Ryan or Rivera. They get injuries too. Doesn’t seem our coaches can make adjustments on the fly when things aren’t working right. Figured offense would struggle all along. Especially w/o tedford.

  44. sam Says:

Fire lovie after this year, please for the love of god glazers get some fresh blood open freakin minded coaches in here!!!!!!!!

  45. Brent Says:

Jbuc I’ve never seen a game like that? Pundits say same thing. Were not first team to change schemes, happens every year in nfl! Being behind is one thing that debacle is inexcusable. Player were Lost and quit. Most people know they need time to gel. Doesn’t explain these 3 games!

  46. lightningbuc Says:

    Brent,

You are absolutely right. All the Josh Freeman apologists used to use the “new system”, “new coordinator” crap for his awful play.

  47. JBuc Says:

Brent- agreed that Thursday was disturbing. That why I said I am hoping it was an anomaly. I was actually encouraged by the first 2 games. Granted they were playing backup QB’s but Carolina is tough regardless and Austin Davis may be decent for The Rams. I felt like if they cleaned up some of the mistakes, became more familiar with the schemes and got Tedford back then they would be ahead of schedule. What I saw Thursday was a bunch of players that seemed unsure of their assignments which snowballed into a true ass kicking.

Still think Lovie will turn this around although the Tedford thing is discouraging.

  48. JBuc Says:

@lightningbuc- ask Alex Smith if having consistency in coaches and schemes matters. Difference with a QB or a player is that you can throw in another player to see if they can pick it up faster. Can’t do that with an entire team.

  49. Joseph Mamma Says:

Oh, just give it time Lovie is a proven coach and been to the Super Bowl right? Well so did Sam Wyche and he came down to tampa and sucked out loud. What lovie did in chicago means exactly jack squat here.

  50. RastaMon Says:

Adjusting on the fly…14 points after 0-56……in boxing slang…all 31 other ..call the Bucs…Lovies Bucs…Tomato Cans

  51. Pelbuc Says:

Well now that the dumpster fire is official, only after 3 games, the owners and coaches have the perfect excuse for justifying this sorry ass season.. Too many new players adjusting to a new system on offense, defense…OC unavailable, injuries, etc., etc… Another lost season and new excuses and a whole lot of drama. If Glazers dweebs won’t sell, then axe the OC, DC and special teams coach 30 seconds after the last game. Also trade Barron, Martin, Johnson, Foster, VJax, and give Bowers and Goldson their walking papers.. At least get some players in here that don’t want to embarrass themselves on game day.

  52. RastaMon Says:

oh…….down 0….to the Panthers in the first game… 51 yard FG….I was there and they would be kicking a FG into MY Seats…….punt….I knew at that moment….I knew at that moment….I knew at that moment….I knew at that moment….I knew at that moment….I knew at that moment….then last Thursday came……..

  53. JBuc Says:

@Joseph Momma- and that’s why ownership can’t win. Hire someone with a winning track record and people like you say it means nothing and provide an exception to the rule, Sam Wyche, as an example of why it won’t work. They tried to go outside the box a couple of years ago with Schiano (after they approached Chip Kelly) and look where that got them.

  54. RastaMon Says:

Go back to east Texas..and start a Church….this is 2014 NFL….not a recalmation humanitarin project

  55. "that guy" Says:

maybe they should give this guy a job, sounds like he knows more about football then lovie -.-

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8riYEo9NOjs

  56. Pewter Lou Says:

Dungy,Gruden,Raheem,Schiano,Lovie. Dilfer,Johnson,Josh,Glennon,McCown. It’s completely mind boggling to me how one organization can have so much lack of continuity from one season to the next. I’m the laughingstock of my boys for supporting these guys year in,year out. I’m starting to wonder if I have some type of abused wife syndrome. It makes no sense that EVERY year its the same damn thing. Every Sunday I have to drag my a$$ to the tv and wonder which clown show will show up today, its ridiculous

  57. GO 1976 BUCS Says:

This is 1976/77 Bucs revisited, all over again!

  58. bucstop.com Says:

what game were you watching? I saw pass to Herron dropped, viax dropped (multiple). The ball was thrown, it was just dropped every chance a receiver could. Thats the reason for the WR shake up today.

  59. Brent Says:

Agree jbuc. For me, Lovie has a year at least to get things right. I would say he has a d- grade thru first 3 games. Not sure parameters for success but at a minimum I thought he should win more games than last year cause better roster. I dont buy no talent argument. Tedford is a blow though.

  60. bucstop.com Says:

I find all the negative Lovie comments funny. You people pumped your fists when he was hired, but at the first sign of adversity you run like life is a Madden football game.

Ive said this before, thank god there was no social media when Tony Dungy took over because there would have been “Same old Bucs” calls for his job after week 3 then too!

Wake up…every time you change coaches, you destroy a roster. Three Coaches in 6 years people…THATS THE PROBLEM!!!!

  61. JBuc Says:

Brent- didn’t say they don’t have talent. I think they are more talented than last year. However, need time to gel.

  62. Brent Says:

I know I wasn’t referring to you. I’ve heard that argument a few times.

  63. buc4lyfe Says:

We went from one ignorant coach to another and I guess both are going to lose their job trying to do what they want to do instead of what it’s obvious they can do best. You invest a high draft pick in a 6’5 receiver and then go out of your way to run the ball and it’s lovie fault. ignorance rules the day in Tampa.

Why practice if he’s gonna coach that way just show up on Sunday and play because with a generic gameplan like that who needs a full week to prepare

  64. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Architek Says
“This is just to sensible – why would you adjust when you can simply stay the course and go 0 – 16? (playing Dungy ball).”

Dungy ball DID work, you know. You say that like its an insult. It isn’t. Dungy ball includes the defense…which we don’t have.

    This isn’t “Dungy Ball.”

We do need a good OC who can make the calls though.

  65. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Get this straight…Lovie Smith is a good coach. Just about everyone here predicted a rough first season, and now that its happening you complain? Tampa fans really suck overall. There is no curse. It’s Karma.

  66. CB Buc Says:

Everyone is saying 2-14 or 3-13…
Can someone please tell me what games we’ll win?

    Maybe Minnesota… Maybe.

  67. JBuc Says:

    Well said Bonzai

  68. Brent Says:

Actually most people I read on this blog were predicting a winning season or playoffs including some pundits. I said all along 7-8 wins would be great. Lovie has time but when you suck people criticize. First 3 games were bad coaching. Haven’t heard any pundits say differently. So deal with it Lovie and turn it around! Go bucs.

  69. CB Buc Says:

BB, there’s “rough” and then there’s what we are into. You can’t say that this was expected or somehow acceptable, can you?

It’s embarrassing on so many levels

“Every Sunday I have to drag my a$$ to the tv and wonder which clown show will show up today, its ridiculous.”

I hear and feel your pain. It’s like we don’t have anything to look forward to during the week. Have a rough week at work, and the Bucs playing decent eases some of that. But that’s gone now.

There is no more “I can’t wait til Sunday” for Bucs fans. I’m not even going to get riled up in August anymore. I don’t even care if they sign Tom Br-ady in the offseason, I won’t be excited about this team for a long, long time.

Yes Bonzai….I said a long, long time.

  72. WalkdaPlank Says:

    @Bonzai

Yea, I don’t know about you, but Joe’s poll on how many wins the Bucs would get this season showed fans looking at 7-9, 8-8, and 9-7. Granted, this was before injuries to GMC, Martin, Johnson, ASJ, Mike Jenkins, Mankins, and even our offensive coordinator. As a homer, I foolishly predicted 8 wins.

But even if somebody expected it to be rough, did anybody expect it to be THIS rough? I don’t even think Dallasbuc expected the Bucs to be down 56-0 in the 4th quarter against the Failcons. If Lovie is such a good coach, how come his team came out unprepared in EVERY PHASE OF THE GAME? Literally nothing went right. The only reason we scored is because the refs allowed Vjax to push off and Lansanah was gifted a pick 6 by that garbage backup.

  73. Kevin422 Says:

Hey JoeBucsFan…. you need to send this video to the Bucs team. If this kid can’t motivate these Bucs to run through a brick wall to get a win, I don’t know what will. Please send it to them and Post on your site …. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=859380407427949&fref=nf

  74. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie could probably coach an old timers football league team, older than 70, call it the Geriatric Geezers. They would hail from St. Pete aka “wrinkle city”.

  75. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

Not to worry Bucs fans “The Cannon” will save the season…

  76. Buc1987 Says:

“If Lovie is such a good coach, how come his team came out unprepared in EVERY PHASE OF THE GAME? ”

This has been happening since week 1. For all you people that STILL believe in Lovie open your EYES!

Ask yourselves does this team look prepared to play a game football every Sunday? If you answer yes, then you’re lying to yourselves. This has been going on since pre-season. This team looks worse than it’s looked in 10 years and there’s no denying it either.

But it’s give Lovie more time? More time? This guy needs 10 years. Is that long enough? Because if he stays the coach of the Bucs that’s how long it’s going to take.

Why? Just look at them. Once again I ask do they look prepared to play? I’ve been asking that question to myself since pre-season. Then after I got back on JBF, I asked it on here after the Panthers game. This team does not look prepared in all THREE phases of the game and that all falls on “Lovie Give Him More Time Smith. No one else. No other reason or excuse. That falls on the coach. Yes or no?

  77. Skyline Crew Says:

Only problem is the few times we aired it Vjax and Evans both failed to bring it in.

  78. SteveK Says:

Schiano is on the books for two more seasons, after this one, which means Lovie has 3 years to get it right.

Lovie is a good coach. This is Lovie’s team now, but remember it was the Rock Star’s for the past 5 years . It’s going to take time to pick up the pieces. We need to get better, gel, and draft BPA #1 next spring.

  79. SteveK Says:

    1987,

    We F***ing suck, ok?

I get it, we all grieve the stickiness of the Bucs in different ways. You are one passionate SOB. It will get better, just have faith in the process

The NFC is really good, and we are not.

This is a 5 win team.

  80. SteveK Says:

    Suckiness*

  81. JBuc Says:

Buc1987: it’s called a process. What is it that you don’t understand? You bring in 40 new players and expect them to all be completely up to speed as other teams with much less turnover? Tony’s team lost their first 6 games and they looked rough. When you start working out are you immediately in shape or do you fight through muscle soreness and develop strength and stamina over time?

Lovie’s job is to build a perineal winner. We were 4-12 last year. I can take a little worse before it gets better if the better lasts a long time.

  82. WalkdaPlank Says:

    @SteveK

    Lol. That’s optimistic.

  83. lightningbuc Says:

Where is this 40 new players nonsense coming from? Please look over the 53 man roster and explain how 40 of them are new. It’s more like 30.

  84. Pruritus Ani Says:

Edwards is delusional. No one ever bought into his fantasies when he was a coach.. It was always someone else fault.

  85. DB55 Says:

Herm Edwards I mean lovie smith is a great coach! It’s everyone around him that sux including but not limited to: Martin Vjax James Zuttah joseph penn glennon Barron and Banks.

The only good players lovie has to work with are: McCown, Rainey, EDS, mike Johnson, and Herron. Oh how could I forget Matt forte 2.0 Chris Simms no wait Charlie Simms. This kid is going to be great when he play just wait n see.

We will run the ball behind mankins and omameh with Rainey. Throw the ball to Herron and Sims out the backfield. Then use our 6’5″ receiver mike Evans n TE Meyers to dominate in the red zone.

Man I’m so funny I couldn’t contain my laughter but I know I got at least one of you fools. Every decision lovie has made has blown up in his face. Tedford, let’s not forget how bad they play in the preseason which led to the mysterious “procedure”. I knew there was a huge problem when he said tedford was “alert”. C’mon man!! Frazier what a joke this guy is. Google frazier top ten defenses, lol. Good luck finding one, there is only one. The offensive line moves, McCown, the draft – a RB in the third when you need oline help, really?!?!

All along telling the media “shut up stupid I know what I’m doing”. All smiles at 1bp.

  86. DB55 Says:

Lovie Smith = Herm Edwards 2.0

  87. Fort Myers Dave Says:

SteveK: I don’t know where the 5 wins will come from but I hope you are right. I know last year I caught a bit of flack when I said the Bucs would win a couple after the Bucs came out of the bye and lost a winnable game vs. Philly: I thought they’d beat the Bills and pull off an upset somewhere like the rams (they lost that one just like this year) and they did net 4, just enough to push them back to #7 in the draft when 3 wins would have got you the 3rd pick….. Maybe this year the same will happen with the Bucs getting win #1 against the Vikings and just maybe getting a road win in Cleveland to start a mini streak; besides that I have trouble even thinking of a team the Bucs would have a chance against unless one of the opponents get decimated by injuries, has a few domestic violence issues or has a star player to spank his kids in public and get deactivated as result of the media circus ala Adrian Peterson….

But say you are right and they go 4-12 or 5-11; then Lovie saves his job and may actually get credit for manufacturing wins out of this train wreck. Then the Bucs draft somewhere between 6 and 10 in the draft, just like this year, probably missing out on the marquee players at each position of need again… As bad as this team is and as bad as the coaching staff has been so far this season; perhaps going 1-15 or actually doing a Detroit and go “perfect” might be best for this franchise as it will make the Glazers fire this dysfunctional coaching staff and get the #1 pick overall to draft a franchise QB who just might help give this team the offensive punch that it has never had….

  88. CB Buc Says:

I’ll ask again….where the hell are the projected wins coming from?

    This team has already quit.

  89. DallasBuc Says:

CB- no one will answer you because there is no answer. There is not one team that you can find on our schedule that we can beat. Each team on our schedule automatically counts their Bucs week as a ‘W’.
0-16 is really tough to do but so is winning a football game in the NFL with mediocre QB, mediocre oline, garbage overpaid / underperforming FAs, and now an OC on indefinite LOA and a rash of injuries.
Buc fans I hate to say it but after what we have seen go down in these last few demoralizing weeks 0-16 looks almost obvious.

  90. Buc1987 Says:

@SteveK and JBuc…your opinions mean diddly squat to me until either one of you answer the question.

Has this team looked prepared to play football for the first 3 weeks of the season?
It’s a yes or no answer too. You can answer yes or no and then leave you’re explanation as to why you answered one way or the other.

SteveK…passionate..lol that’s an understatement, but I’m starting to question as to why.

JBuc…there’s always..hope…hope and change. Joe’s favorite word.. hope.

  91. Buc1987 Says:

Right now the Jaguars are a better looking team then are sad sorry team that everyone says give Lovie some time. Better things are on the horizon. We have to go backwards to go forwards. Blah blah blah.

    SMMofoH.

That’s right I’m a miserable Bucs fan. Blame Lovie Smith and Jason “we don’t expect our fans to be patient” Licht.

I’m patient. That’s all I’ve ever been as a Bucs fan. I can BE patient if the team looks PREPARED to play a game on Sunday or Thursday. Right now though…How many of you can say the words, I can’t wait to see the Bucs play on Sunday?

Yah that’s what I thought. That’s how far away we are Bucs fans. Be patient.

  92. JBuc Says:

Buc1987: yes, they were competitive with chances to win both game 1 and game 2. You are correct about game 3

  93. Buc1987 Says:

Jbuc…then you’re in denial. I was at the Panthers game and they came out flat as hell and unprepared to play. Competitive against the mighty Derek Anderson and his rag tag bunch of newly formed offensive lineman. Yeah they we’re competitive alright. Whatever I guess it’s going to take you a few more weeks to see it.

Well there goes that Bucs fan. Stay blind for another 3 more weeks and then tell me how Lovie’s doing with our team.

    Competitive. LOL

  94. JBuc Says:

Whatever…I’ve actually run teams of people before. Getting brand new people to do new things in a short amount is a huge challenge regardless of their talent level. By the way, guess which teams have had the least amount of roster turnover in the NFL since 2011? Then guess which teams have had the most?

When you find out, let me know if you think roster turnover doesn’t matter?

  95. DallasBuc Says:

87- “Has this team looked prepared to play football for the first 3 weeks of the season?”
Of course not! And it is not like we haven’t seen this kind if repeated Sunday unpreparedness…think each of the last 12 games played in 2011 season. I will just take this moment to remind the sugarcoating buried heads out there that Morris’ players didn’t quit on him until game 5 of his 3rd season. Lovie’s players flat out quit by game 3 of his first season.
That was quit folks. We all know it too well from 2011.

  96. SteveK Says:

    1987,

We did not look at all ready to play.

I was ok to stick with Schiano for another year and I will absolutely be patient with Lovie. It’s the only choice left. In the mean time, I am crossing my fingers that Glennon catches on and starts winning us some ball games. It sucks to suck.

We are the shittiest team in the league, after week 3 , by a far margin

  97. JBuc Says:

DallasBuc: so you are saying these players have tuned out Lovie already?

  98. DallasBuc Says:

JBuc- I meant what just said. This team quit on Lovie, each other and all of us on Thursday night. That sht show went beyond humiliating and unacceptable. It was quit. Saw it in 2011. Saw it again Thursday night against the Falcons of all teams. Shameful display.

  99. JBuc Says:

DallasBuc: absolutely an embarrassment and I would agree unacceptable. I believe those were pretty close to Lovie’s exact words. I didn’t see a team that necessarily quit but rather a team that looked completely confused. Regardless of the reason, it is Lovie’s fault and it needs to get cleaned up quick. However, that is not what I asked you. Do you think they have tuned him out already or quit on him for the season?

  100. DallasBuc Says:

JBuc- again I saw quit. I did not say they tuned him out. You can’t see something like that from where we as fans sit. You can see quit on the football field though. What are you getting at?

  101. JBuc Says:

Quit, confused, whatever. It’s subjective. However, if they have already tuned him out or quit on him as a coach for whatever reason then I would expect to see no improvement from this point on. Are you saying we will not see improvement and that he has already lost this team?

    …………
Lovie’s job is to build a perineal winner. We were 4-12 last year. I can take a little worse before it gets better if the better lasts a long time.
    —————————————————————————

I know it’s just a typo, likely posted from your phone, but it is ironically funny to me. The perineum is the patch of skin between your testicles and your anus. The kids these days call it a chode or choad ( ck the urban dictionary). So the perineal Bucs seems an apropos term.

I will echo what I believe both DallasBuc and DB55 have been saying:
We seem to have regressed in all three phases of the game. I completely agree with Buc1987, that Schiano’s Bucs would beat this current team consistently, and likely would have won those first two games. Their run defense was superb, and their special teams actually blocked a few kicks rather than the reverse. Even the offense with a “game manager”, was much better than the cluster….. seen with McCown et al.

  103. PRBucFan Says:

Last I checked the post season wasn’t starting this weekend?

Nor is it a 3 game schedule season 😉

  104. PRBucFan Says:

And if after three games they “tuned out Lovie” than adios players. Don’t need on the Bucs.

  105. JBuc Says:

Tickrdr- Ha! Ok, now that is funny. Yes, I was sending from my phone and to be honest I don’t know if it autocorrected to perineal or what but it does seem most appropriate at the is point. Obviously, I was attempting to say perennial winner.

I’m not sure you can say the Bucs have regressed in all 3 phases with such a small sampling of games. I would say I saw some improvement from game 1 to game 2 and then game 3 was a train wreck.

One area that seems consistently bad and there in no excuse for has been special teams. That to me could be a very telling sign as to the attitude of this team. If we do not see drastic change in that area from week to week then Lovie should be in major trouble.
