Becht: Glennon Growth Will Be On Display

September 22nd, 2014

GlennonjagsIt’s all about No. 8, the lean, mean, pocket-passing machine out of North Carolina State.

The Bucs’ new starting quarterback (hopefully) is good enough to get the Bucs winning football games again.

That’s the word from former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht, who’s a busy man working for ESPN and the Buccaneers Radio Network, among other gigs. Becht says an improved Glennon should be on display.

“Just going off last season, I thought he was protective of the football. You know, he didn’t do anything stupid. And we had an opportunity in the football games to at least have a chance. You know, I think he’s grown, honestly, taking a step back with [McCown] there. Now maybe not off Josh’s play but definitely classroom and getting himself prepared to be a better football player, Becth said this morning on WDAE-AM 620.

“Now will Mike go out there and be a different guy and help us win football games? I think he’s good enough. He definitely has the weapons around him.”

Joe found it noteworthy that Becht was unsure Glennon grew “off Josh’s play.” Actually, Joe thinks Glennon surely did learn and grow from McCown’s play. One can learn a lot from the boneheaded throws and high school decisions of others.

Joe’s not quite sure Glennon has better weapons than he had last season. There are injuries and issues in the backfield and at receiver. However, Joe is confident the blindside protection of Glennon should be an upgrade. And that should be significant for a statuesque kind of QB.

Even if he throws for 300 yards and 3 TD’s, he’s going back to the bench the following week. Sad to say, we already know why Lovie will get fired in the future – loyalty to bad players. It’s written in stone, and probably part of why Chicago canned him.

Unfortunately for Glennon, he’s only going to get one game to show if he’s good enough. We already know the other guy isn’t – let’s hope Glennon is.

  2. buc'd Up Says:

We even saw Glennon pull the ball down and earn some positive yardage with his legs on Thursday. I didnt even know he had knees. The fact that he would just stand there and not move in the pocket was the biggest reason I was against him. Hes got to prove he can evade the rush and maybe throw on the run every now and then.

  3. Mathius Says:

statuesque, what did you not see those 2 scrambles for first downs….

Teams better have a spy for Glennon to keep him contained.

Joe, Chris Landry mentioned on WDAE that Glennon graded out lower than McCown on Thursdays performance against the Falcons. Do you have any Idea what Chris was talking about?

Each QB played a half of football and this is what they produced:

    Passing CP/AT YDS TD INT
    M. Glennon 17/24 121 1 0
    J. McCown 5/12 58 0 1

  4. Mike Glennon Mob Says:

Truer words have never been spoken by Anthony Becht. Glennon will be far more prepared this week and will show improvement. Let’s not forget he didn’t take first team reps ahead of the Atlanta game. It’ll be different against Pittsburgh. Go Glennon….err….uhhhh….Go Bucs!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am also fearful that Lovie will go back to McCown no matter how Glennon performs….get ready for that…..he might not be on a honeymoon any longer with fans but I can guarantee that the Glazers will let him do his thing for quite some time.
Fans might as well get off the “fire Lovie” train because it ain’t goin’ nowhere!!!

  6. Yar Says:

I said it when Lovie was hired and I’ll say it again, keep Lovie out of and away from the offense. His philosophy is wrong. Let the offensive coaches do what they know how to do, score points. This defeatist attitude of a turnover is an instant loss is bringing the team down. Turn this offense loose and let them light it up.

  7. billy buckaroo Says:

Unless the defense coaches come up with a better plan and the players execute it, Glennon isn’t going to get much time to show what he can do.

The other teams show no sense of urgency to beat the bucs.
Long methodical time consuming drives by Steelers will likely limit his play.

  8. holymoly Says:

Any idea when Tedford’s up-tempo offense is going to show up ?

We’re not sure why so many people keep saying Glennon is immobile. Russell Wilson hasn’t even ran a long one like Glennon did in Atlanta.

  10. mpmalloy Says:

The culprits in the Bucs implosion this season are (ironically)
the entire defense and (less ironically) McCown.

And (as I’ve said before) the culprit every year is the
owners surreptitious cheapness and complete lack of
caring about anything but moving large sums of money
    from Tampa to Manchester United.
    Sad state of affairs.
We’ll probably be abused with impunity until 2028
when the lease expires (if they don’t find a way to
    move before that).

Hillary will be the next president by way of voter fraud
(as opposed to the current voter fraud: Obama).
The American middle class is in the crosshairs of the globalistas
again. What Obama did to Americas defense, your wallet and
healthcare will pale in comparison to the Hillary.
Make no mistake: Hillary WILL be the next president and there
is not a damn thing you can do to stop it.

  11. Mathius Says:

Did you see Russels catch or Russel take over the game in ot, lets not use those 2 names in the same sentence yet.

  12. Mathius Says:

    Does Lovie = Hilary ???
    I am confussed

  13. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“Just going off last season, I thought he was protective of the football. You know, he didn’t do anything stupid.” – Anthony Becht

Clearly, Becht must have been drunk while watching the games. Glennon made a slew of mistakes last year. They are excusable, seeing as it was his rookie year, but he made plenty.

What I’ll be watching for is improvement in the areas of the mistakes.

He cannot get lucky all the time. Take the last game. He threw three passes right into the hands of the enemy. He was lucky all of them were dropped. Such luck doesn’t happen on a regular basis.

When Mike is pressured, he makes plenty of bad decisions…and the oline, ironically, was better last year. He’ll be under even more pressure now.

I’m sure the MGM will disagree with me, but the proof will be on display.

So what I’ll be looking for us improvement under pressure, better long passes, how he reads the defense and whether he STILL stares down WRs.

All of those were weaknesses in his game last year.

I just wish he could get a fair shot at doing well. Unless this team turns around, all they’ll do is make him look bad, even if he isn’t. I’ll make no excuses for him, but the play of the rest of the team can be a valid hindrance.

  14. CC Says:

Who’s the backup to Glennon? Pittsburgh is a violent defense that shows no mercy.Hell, they even take out their own teammates . I’m afraid we might be down to the 3rd stringer by halftime.

  15. Brandon Says:

I think his two greatest weaknesses are holding onto the ball too long and not sliding and moving in the pocket and his inability to attempt, and when he does they’re awful, intermediate passes in the 11-20 yard range. He does play way too conservatively, but if McCown had played a tad more conservatively we might be 2-1 right now.

  16. Walter Says:

I’m actually excited for this next game, with Tedford back and extra preparation time, I’m eager to see if the offense can actually efficiently string some scoring drives together.

  17. Zam Says:

All of Lovie’s personnel decisions have been wrong so far. Being called the QB of the future by Lovie is proof-positive he’s still going to stink.

  18. Snook Says:

    Joe…

are you saying Collins is an upgrade from Penn?
If so, I’d have to agree and finally glad you came around.

No need to ask Joe what he’s saying. Joe was clear in this post, that the left side of the line is better.–Joe

As for Glennon’s “growth”… lets not expect too much. 0-16 is still on the way.

  19. Phillip Says:

    @mathius

Those stats don’t tell the whole story… Had 3 dropped INT’S. There are plenty of other things that go into grading out a player than the most basic stats from a game.

  20. Phillip Says:

BTW we need to cut someone I believe to bring up Kafka from the practice squad or if we sign a vet that’s available.

I doubt this cut will be telling unless they actually had proven snap counts..

  21. Brent Says:

New poll results just in!! The least talented and most important part of team is actually coaching staff not qb or d-line!! All joking aside, I hope Lovie can turn its around I hear he’s good. Also, tedford has been out. But through 3 games, that coaching staff has resembled 3 stooges (smith,Frazier, arroyo). I’ve never seen a pro team so lost and lacking confidence. New scheme no excuse.

  22. Hillary_BlowsGoats Says:

Becht has ZERO credibility now that he is part of bucs radio network. Politics and his desires to be a member of the media has removed any credibility. You can’t speak the truth when you are being compensated either directly or indirectly by an organization you report on. Media across the board is a joke. Honest, fact based journalism was list years ago. Media is just a bunch of hacks trying to save thier own jobs.

  23. Destinjohnny Says:

The guy was a rookie last year with a crap supporting stAff. Look he is isn’t the second coming of Marino but he is better then josh. So for now we have to ride him

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Glennon’s weaknesses are the least of my worries. The supporting cast is where the worry comes into play. Halfway decent blocking and receivers getting even slightly open and Glennon will be competent. Off topic since the door was left ajar, Hillary as president is another cruel joke played on a gullible public just like all of them since JFK was taken out.

  25. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

When you come into a game down 56-0 as a QB you will find yourself playing against a soft defense. They will allow you move the ball and to score as long as you take time off the clock.

I’m behind any Buc QB. But lets be real here The Cannon did not show up in preseason. This was disappointing since the Real general was not hanging off his neck this year.

Now there are no excuses. The line is opening holes for our running backs and he has an upgrade on receivers and tight ends. The real Cannon will be exposed to Buccaneer fans on Sunday(s). I wish him the best!

Is he the QB or Backup QB of the future? This will be shown this year.

    Go Bucs!!!

We need to sign Connor Shaw like YESTERDAY!!!!!

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Russell Shepard can play emergency QB….

  27. andres Says:

His one game to prove himself going against that buzz saw known as the Pittsburgh defense. My god they were nasty last night.

    _______________________________________________________________

Really, you’re going to compare Russell Wilson to Glennon? You are really going to try to convince us that Glennon is as mobile as Wilson? The only comparison between those two is that they went to the same college! The real Glennon will show up Sunday, and afterwards, there will be nothing but excuses from the MGM about how it’s a shitty situation he was put into, the OL sucks, blah, blah, blah. If he’s the next coming of Joe Montana as some of you seem to think, then none of that will matter and Glennon will win the starting job with his performance. Personally, I think he’s going to be sacked at least 7 times, and most likely we’ll see his patented butterfingers fumble losing the handle on the ball at least once as well. I will give MGM that Glennon is better than McCown, but Glennon is a back up, and will always be a back up. This season is lost.

  29. "that guy" Says:

ha, the only thing that glennon has learned through this, is you can produce, make players around you better, take some devastating hits for the team, but in the end, the effort doesnt matter. only a buddy system matters. hes got to be shaking his head saying “really? i lost my job to this guy!?!?”. and damnit, they completely dismantled his receiver corps, and his o-line. its almost like lovie wanted mccown, and the offense wanted glennon, so lovie fired them for it.

  30. Paul Says:

“No. 8, the lean, mean, pocket-passing machine”

Why is this site always trying to sell us a read option qb? Glennon has good pocket presence. He knows to run when play is covered up. whats wrong with that??

  31. "that guy" Says:

they sell the read option…….. because its college football turned pro, AKA “fantasy football”. even the refs support it, they even change rules for it.

  32. Soggy Says:

Why is lovie so stubborn, If lovie benches glennon over old man McCown at this point in the season, The captain [lovie] is mental and I say lets hog tie his as$ and throw him in the galley with some viagra and a playgirl magazine and lock the door and don’t let him out until the season is over.. Is lovie a buc or not? The compass is pointing to NO..

  33. MGMob Exterminator Says:

@Soggy: Don’t be an idiot, if Glennon plays like an average game manager or stinks it up the next few weeks, we must be crying out loud for the Mike Kafka experiment.

Shouldn’t our motto be to see if there is a franchise QB on the roster according to the Glennon mob? Why the double standard then? By bye week, Glennon should not play safe while we put up 10 points on scoreboard and get scored on by 30. If he does, it is Kafka time baby!

  34. Soggy Says:

If we have better I am all for it, really kafka? Talk to lovie not me..

    1. This is a football site

    2. The President was democratically elected twice. Stop blaming the current President for something (hurt Americas defense, your wallet, etc.) his predecessor did.
