Poor Technique, Discipline, Fits Are Burning Bucs

September 20th, 2014

johnthan banks 0728The Buccaneers’ defensive performance on Thursday night was so dreadful that only marginal credit is due the Falcons.

That’s the assessment of longtime NFL personnel man Chris Landry, who has worked as an assistant coach and scout for Bill Belichick, coordinator of the Titans scouting department, among other positions in pro and college football.

You don’t want to miss this breakdown.

Landry also serves as an exclusive analyst for JoeBucsFan.com. This morning, he goes extremely deep into the Xs and Os into the Bucs’ many failures of defense. His podcast his below. And Joe highly recommends it.

Landry dives into how Gerald McCoy serves as “camouflage,” explains who played well on defense, and gave Xs and Os details on the Bucs’ poor technique in their “off coverage” in the secondary, as well as their “awful” run fits, including breaking down the technique failures of Johnthan Banks.

Joe’s proud to continue his partnership with LandryFootball.com.

Landry will be providing an exclusive podcast for JoeBucsFan.com readers, which you can enjoy here after Bucs games, usually on Tuesday evening.

I get the feeling that the transition from one staff to another is A LOT more difficult than I wanted to admit. I still believe in Lovie, it’s just gonna take a whole lot more time than I was hoping. We’re used to waiting though….otherwise we wouldn’t still be Bucs fans.

Great review. Bottom line – Bad coaching. Is it time to start talking about next year’s draft ? I’m putting in a rule. I’ll call it the Glazier Rule. All number 1 draft picks from here on out must play within 6 yards from the line of scrimmage. That’s where your best players make the most difference. NOT 20 yards back playing safety. Mark Barrian as the # 7 pick in the draft ? What good is a great tackle 10 yards down the field ? And now we find he can’t cover anyone. Are you kidding me #7 in the whole draft and that’s what we get ?

Regardless of a win or loss next week, watching the defensive players effort will be the key. If you see real effort than there are possibilities eventually.
    If you see weak effort,
the players aren’t buying what Lovies selling

I believe, Joe, that one of your lawyer groups that advertise on the site should file a class-action lawsuit against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for:

    FAN ABUSE

I think the case would have major merit after this past Thursday night’s offering.

  5. 77 bassguitarist Says:

@ tom edrington LOL you are so right bro….
It’s a criminal case 1st degree atempted murder
    Of bucs fans!!!!!!!!

The Falcons looking so good against the Bucs is about the same as me looking good slam dunking a Basketball in a hoop 6′ above the ground. Absolutely no challenge. I think the Falcons are more average to a little above average but they looked like world beaters against us. I think I am going to write 32 teams down on pieces of paper and pull one from a hat to pick a new team to root for but with my luck I would pick the Bucs out of the hat. LOL…I wont jump ship on this team because I have dealt with this for too long to quit now but damn this track record of mediocrity and irrelevance.

Great association for the site, Joe!! Landry is one, if not THE, guys I most respect & want input from, listening on the radio.

Great team = talented roster + good coaches
    ____

so far we´ve seen from the new regime:

    Bad offseason moves (draft; FA)
+ bad play design/ play calling on offense
    + absolute vanilla defense
    = very bad Buccanneers 2014

  9. DayOnePaul Says:

I’ll take this opportunity to lay the blame for this abortion. And I will be entirely accurate.

The Glazers empowered Jon Gruden to run Rich McKay out of town. His replacement, Gruden’s hand-picked guy, Bruce Allen, had very few high draft choices to work with after the Gurden and Mee-shawn trades, and made virtually no impact with his middle round choices. His replacement, Mark Dominick, blew virtually every top pick he had during his tenure, save Gerald McCoy, and reaped virtually nothing out of the middle and late rounds. Of course, Dominick threw a fortune at an injured guard to make it look like he was trying, and another king’s ransom at a possession wide receiver. Gotta give him that. So when Lovie & Licht got here, the cupboard was basically bare. That being said, Light made very little impact on re-stocking this roster with playmakers this last off-season. Therein lies the blame in it’s totality. Meanwhile, Rich McKay looks pretty good in Atlanta. And if God-ell gets canned, you’d have to think that McKay would be the front-runner to replace him. Probably should have gotten the Commish gig in the first place.

Then again, perennially lousy teams have lousy ownership.

And therein lies the blame for this team SUCKING to varying degrees for 12 seasons.

From what Landry said, either the coaching these guys have had has been bad or they just didn’t care or listen as what is to be done. I can’t believe that the coaches were not trying to correct them during the game, so we have bigger problems than we thought.

If the defense was playing this bad, it is no wonder that the offense looked so good against them.

Landry said that Glennon graded out worse than McCown, I don’t know what he was using but just the completions and interception count alone would say this is not true, please explain this if you can.

Lovie saying that McCown is still the starter if he can play is indicative of the head in the sand (thought I was going to say something else didn’t you?) approach to life and coaching.

Lovie has to change a lot to stay here and do his job, the loss of fans will doom him otherwise.

  11. Soggy Says:

Our QB situation is what it is Because? We know the answer..

@Glennon If these coaches do not hobble you first, You have to carry this team, Screw these coaches they will make sure you suck, Man you have got to be the man now, see the field, make the right choices, screw the play called, it’s all on you now, Would like to see you make us bucs fans proud to be a buc again this year like we were at offseason and If not I will be the first to start the seal clubbing.. Go Bucs..

  12. Andrew 1 Says:

Exactly. These players are still learning Lovie’s system on defense. I saw several coverage breakdowns vs the falcons, and this was early on in the game when we still had a chance. Even still, Lovie is sticking with his defense and trying to get his players to master it, even if it means having breakdowns early on in the season. It’s ballsy, I think I would have abandoned it and brought pressure by now, but I think that just shows how confident Lovie is in his plan.

I was expecting the ads to change to suicide hotlines and help for pill abuse.

  14. Tony Says:

Sorry guys, but McCown placed a perfect ball to Rainey for a big gain on the first drive that he dropped. VJ dropped a ball and was out of position on his route on the pick 6. Herron dropped a ball. That is inexcusable. I like Glennon, I really do, but people need to back off on their utter hatred for McCown.

  15. Tye Says:

Lovie Smith’s accomplishments as Bucs HC so far:

Made the Panthers look good with a backup QB
Made the Rams look good with a 3rd string QB
Made the Falcons look like a dominate, powerhouse of a team
So far has made the Browns hiring of Mike Pettine look like a good 1 (Browns beat Saints who played the Falcon down to the final seconds, Falcons treated the Bucs like the Bucs were a child’s toy!)
Made the Bill’s Hiring of Doug Marrone look genius having the Bills 2-0 with NO experience as an NFL HC!
Causing fans to lose hope in the Bucs becoming a winner in time soon.

NOPE!…. No positives for the Bucs that I can find!

  16. Soggy Says:

Who the hell kicks to hester? Lovie can, Lovie can, He’s our man if anybody can lovie can..

  17. RastaMon Says:

Hmmm…word was that this is a top heavy DEFENSIVE STAFF…

  18. Andrew 1 Says:

Don’t forget mental anguish & torture.

  20. RastaMon Says:

A modest proposal..perhaps the Bucs could be the first franchise to strike a deal with a video game company ..where the fans called plays offense/defense on game day…Pay per call

  21. tnew Says:

um.. elephant in the room.. Poor coaching. To Tony, I have no hatred for McCown. I think he is a better qb than what we are seeing. I do thing the system doesn’t fit him or his style that lead to his success. With Glennon, I see the same thing. I don’t see a fit, but with a strong qb class coming out this draft and having a team that is clearly a team in progress, it is time to prove that Glennon is not the guy. I don’t believe he is but the only reason for McCown was if you thought he could win you 10 games. I don’t see any qb taking us 10-3 the rest of the way. If we had won those first two, with great coaching decisions I feel we do, I would feel much different. But the road doesn’t get easier. Put everyone on audition, including GMC. If he loves this system so much, he needs to show it. Sign the contract and improve your team.

  22. Soggy Says:

@RastaMon, Ya, I think kicking to hester would be a bad call..IMO

  23. Soggy Says:

@Lovie, You could not control everything but you could control kicking to hester.. C’mon Man.. Are you a buc or not?

  24. passthebuc Says:

not an ugly assessment, just a valid one.

  25. "that guy" Says:

atlanta must have paid him off -.-

  26. Soggy Says:

And to think lovie let hester go to atlanta for 3 mil, 3 mil looks like a bargain, good job on atlanta’s staff..

Nice! I would vote for the very first play on offense against the Steelers to be a handoff to Rainey for a run up the gut……………….. but nooooooo……………
he laterals back to Glennon on the “flea flicker” for a 66 yard TD to Mike Evans.
Just like the highlight from last year.

  28. BFFL Says:

Why did Landry say Glennon graded worse than McCown in the game? Starting to think this Landry guy is a fraud.

  29. CC Says:

Landry is the same guy who said on the radio that McCown was a GREAT free agent signing.

  30. Aaron Says:

Landry watches the coaches game tape. Im Guessing, he probably checks receivers routes to see if they are open…then checks to see if the QB makes the correct read, given the coverage, and makes the correct throw. If receivers are open and the QB throws to a check down it results in a negative score to the QB On That Play.

If the QB leaves the pocket to early, holds the ball to long or fails to make the correct audible it results in a negative score on the play.

  31. Pickgrin Says:

Joe. Thanks for bringing Mr Landry to JBF with his Bucs analysis reports each week. After listening to a few of these – I really respect his ability to see the important details and then clearly explain them from an obviously unbiased viewpoint. This is a good relationship for your site and another good reason to visit JBF. Good Job guys.

As to what Mr Landry had to say – The truth hurts. Not enough overall talent and not being coached well enough to this point is telling after 3 games concluding with the debacle in Atlanta.

There’s nowhere to go but up from here. I still have hope and actually expect that this coaching staff and these current players will work hard to improve and will show a lot of improvement within the course of this season. I feel somewhat confident that he Bucs are not going to get stomped on all year and will become competitive and win some games.

This was totally a rebuilding year from the get-go and to have said otherwise was foolish. Lovie did say a few times – We are a 4-12 team until we aren’t – but the win NOW mantra was said so many times that it affected us poor homers hopes and expectations upwardly – which makes it all the more painful when the reality hits home that we still suck despite the new staff, scheme and players. This team sucks is the reality as of right now.
