“They Have No Chance”

September 13th, 2014
The inability to get Bucs RB Doug Martin into gear concerns NFL analyst Chris Landry.

The inability to get Doug Martin into gear concerns former NFL scout Chris Landry.

Joe must admit, like most fans, he expected a better effort Sunday against the Stinking Panthers. The Bucs’ offense, for the first three quarters was painfully woeful, and quarterback Josh McCown’s reckless ball security turned into 14 Stinking Panthers points and doomed the Bucs.

Former NFL scout Chris Landry, currently an NFL and college football analyst,  was aghast at the Bucs offense and the result reinforced Landry’s notion that not only are the Bucs not a contender for the division title, they will be lucky to finish 8-8.

Landry explained to Joe’s good friend, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig, during Landry’s weekly Friday appearance on WDAE-AM 620.

“It is going to be a longer process,” Landry said. “I am not one of those that thought this would be a turnaround and win the division. They have no chance. They have no depth. Not even close. Their roster is not like that. It would be great to go 8-8. That’s about what their roster would allow and that is if everything goes well.”

If the Bucs lose to the Lambs tomorrow, man, it’s going to be a drag for the next few months. The Stinking Panthers were without Cam Newton and had a rebuilt offensive line. The Lambs may be starting a fourth-string quarterback, Case Keenum, and are without stud defensive end Chris Long.

If the Bucs cannot seize the advantages given them from teams playing without their top players, then just how are the Bucs going to win games against teams at full strength — on the road?

Seems amazing how the first game can supposedly decide the entire season by all the experts.

Sort of reminds me when Michael Jordan was in high school and didnt make the cut for his basketball team junior year, probably a lot of experts said he would never make it either.

Like being at the horse race track and watching all the people hollering because their horse came out of the gate last yet change their tune when the horse comes flying down the stretch

But, if the experts said it then it must be true:Bonjour

  2. snook Says:

So tired of hearing about no depth. No teams in the NFL have depth. The teams that win consistently usually avoid lots of major injuries.

    Dumb thing to say.

  3. T-DUB Says:

    @BILLY BUCKAROO,

completely agree. Why do we (fans) get pounded on this site for being optimistic in game 2… silly us

  4. kevin Says:

I PERSONALLY would like to see Mike James getting some carries. He is not your pass catching backs but he does run the ball best of the three. More yards after contract and better vision than Martin…

  5. Jonny 2.3 Says:

@kevin: Fully agree. It is blasphemous to say what you did according to many as Martin is supposedly a proven back and James could very well be a 2 game wonder. The sample size is very small, but James was undoubtedly doing somethings Martin and Rainey aren’t capable of. He is one tough mofo to bring down and also has better vision imo. He lacks Martin’s speed, but his agility makes up for it and helps him when the blocking is bad.

  6. canadian bucsfan Says:

It’s hard to be optimistic after watching that game. Also after seeing the injury report coming into this game. I’m not saying we are gonna win the superbowl but we should all remember that we lost a heartbreaker of home opener to the saints the year we won the superbowl.
Heads up BUC fans! It’s only one game.
    GO BUCS!!!

  7. Jeff Says:

Lovie is an average coach with an average QB. Bucs fans, we are still 2-3 years away from 8-8. 6 wins in year one with an average coach and QB is all we can realistically ask for.

  8. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Agreed. It’s a long season and we want to see improvement week to week. After 4-5 games if it does not look any better, then we’ll know what kind of tema to expect this season. I also remember that in 1996 we started 0-6 before finishing 6-4. Can’t remember the schedule, it may have been frontloaded, but turning the corner can and does happen.

  9. SAMCRO Says:

We historically have never been an offensive juggernaut as a franchise but if we are to at least end up with an 8 – 8 record we need to buck that trend. Like so many teams in todays NFL, with the lack of defensive depth, we just can’t rely on our defense to keep us in the games by themselves anymore. Our offense needs to get their collective butts in gear and show why L&L spent so many of this years draft picks on offense. If we see another poor showing by McCown like he did against the Hello Kitties, then we need to turn to MG8. At least “The Cannon” can stretch the field, keeping defenses honest, and not stacking the box.

  10. JMN Says:

If the Bucs went 8-8 this year that would be great! An improvement from last year.

  11. Joseph Mamma Says:

Then how are they going to win games on the road with teams at full strength? I got an idea—they won’t.

  12. ToesOnTheLine Says:

@ the ‘militant optimists’ calling out everyone who are venting about last week’s dismal Bucs display…the fact that they lost isn’t why so many fans/analysts are concerned, it’s the way the Bucs were totally outplayed, out coached, and dominated for over 3 quarters at home by a team without their starting QB. Fans were promised better than that and therefore expect better (win or lose at least play hard not stupid). Had the game ended with the same score but with the Bucs showing signs of being a NFL team prepared to compete throughout the game I’m sure there would be a lot less frustration and venting.

  13. Chef Paul Says:

I still think we will be better than last year, but win the division? I agree. We got no chance.

Even before last week, expecting to win the division, is just unrealistic. Even if we compare ourselves to the Chiefs. Don’t forget they didn’t win their division.

  14. Architek Says:

    I agree with Chris-

He knows a lot more than all of us combined. He giving the truth and not the marketing campaign spill.

    He hit on many points:
    – the def is not athletic enough to dominate
    – void of great players and playmakers outside of GMC/David
    – offense is just bad and will not be good as the division foes until they draft a franchise qb
    – absolutely no depth behind players that aren’t playing good
    – lucky to be 8-8
    – Chris never bought into the playoff hunt because it’s a process

I think we all just need to come back down to earth and just trust our eyes, not our ears because the Bucs will sale you their agenda. Truth is truth and we have whiffed and failed on so many picks and signings.

  15. Harry Says:

    @ Toes,
Thank you for pointing out what should be obvious to the “sheep”. Personally, I can’t relate to people who call themselves fans that are NOT upset with the way we lost last week. How can a real Bucs “fan” be ok with that performance. If the “sheep” find that acceptable, that is their business, but don’t have the audacity to call out those of use who are passionate about how our Bucs perform on the field.

And before any of you sheep respond to my comments, please explain to me how our defense, what was supposed to be the strength of out team, allowed a scrub QB to have a 108.7 QB rating against them! Yeah, I don’t understand why that should be disappointing to Bucs fans…

  16. OB Says:

    Joe

It takes time for the offense and defense to work together. They don’t get much practice in pads any more and don’t play most of the preseason so this is the time they can go all out and work together.

Last week we played the number 2 defense, this week is the number 3, and Thursday I don’t know where the Falcons are, but they get to play a better defense than the Saints so we shall see by the third week what we have.

  17. Tom Edrington Says:

A VERY real world assessment of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

I find it highly amusing when I see posts on JBF where there are comments that portray the Bucs as a possible playoff team.

  18. Capt.Tim, Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

And if we Win, he’ll go back to his “wild card “Prediction

There are still real Football men out there-that can subjectively look at teams, determine their strengths- and make predictions based on that.

Then you have the new breed, who change their opinions after every game played. They don’t care that they constantly contradict themselves, because almost no one remembers- and no one ever calls them out for it.

Don’t give his opinion much merit.
But getting a little nervous about my 9-7 prediction.
    Not panicky- but nervous

  19. Capt.Tim, Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

Harry- they aren’t sheep. They just aren’t stupid.
If you expected a brand new front office, Brand new coaching staff, brand new schemes, and over half of the team new players- to come out on week one playing like a smooth, well oiled winning Machine???

Well- they are either clueless about Football( and team sports) on every level,
OR. . They are some delusional childlike mentality/maturity- who figure they are “Owed” a Super Bowl team every year- and feel “cheated” if they don’t get one!

Or, around here- a combination of Both!
Either way- unless you are a clueless Zombie- you had to figure this team would do it’s winning after a couple weeks learning curve

  20. Dan Says:

I hope I am wrong but what other game can we feel good about winning other than Browns and Lambs. I really want us to be better. I’m so tired of loosing. Go Bucs. Sighhhh

  21. canadian bucsfan Says:

    @capt.tim
There’s no need to call people stupid to be optimistic about the team they cheer for. I’m sure they are upset about that POOR performance on sunday but to claim they no nothing about sports is laughable. Do they many NFL analysts that predicted the bucs to have a winning season also no nothing? I don’t predict playoffs but I don’t think anyone should be called stupid for thinking their team has a shot! Layoff the insults

  23. Hawk Says:

First of all, PLEASE stop saying that Dungy (1996) started a season 0-6. That distinction lies with McKay, Bennett, Morris, and Schiano. I’ve seen this posted twice, and someone is liable to start believing it. Dungy had his problems, but starting 0-6 was not one of them.
Secondly, if the Bucs are not ready to take advantage of ‘weakened’ teams, then they most certainly are not ready to make a ‘run’ at the post season. A lot of people bought into L&L talking about “winning now”. That is called ‘coach-speak’. The ‘spin’ was further reinforced, in your minds, by all the off-season activity. You have to learn how to tune out( or at least decipher) ‘coach-speak’ and understand that if your team made a LOT of off-season changes, there’s a LOT of room errors, and patience for cohesion.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

Capt Tim….I think you are missing Harry’s point. What was said in the offseason by Lovie and Licht did not match the level play that was see against the Panthers.

His point is if they at least looked competitive, hardly anyone would be complaining.

I left the game early in the 4th quarter in disgust and I’m still disgusted mouth. Last season after the Jets loss that, I was over it by Tuesday. Here it is Saturday and I’m still in this funk.

I don’t think our team can beat the Lambs. Not after what I saw last Sunday. I don’t know what you saw Tim. What I do know is this if Schiano was at the helm of that debacle last Sunday, you’d be in here raising hell all week. I’ll also add this.

Schiano’s team looked more prepared to play the Saints in last season’s home opener. Tell me I’m full of it and you’re in denial.

  25. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I figured 8 or 9 wins from the beginning. With a healthy team that doesn’t sustain injuries to its key players. Short of that this team will not do better than 6 or 7 wins.

  26. Harry Says:

    @Buc1987,
Thats exactly it. I think we all expected a Bucs offense that is trying to figure it out, especially with its OC MIA, a rookie WR and TE, new players at 4 of 5 Oline positions, etc. What we did NOT expect was a defense that gets only one sack and allows a scrub backup QB that makes half of what McCown does to play well enough to have a 108.7 QB rating.

I LOVE my Bucs, and have for decades. Anyone who mocks us for being upset with this terrible display of professional football is not a passionate fan. And thats ok, but don’t judge those of us who are passionate to see our team play well, not necessarily win, but at least play well in some aspect.

  27. Architek Says:

    Harry,
Dead on. Capt Tim can’t talk about anyone because he’s as unstable a fan around here as anyone.

I said the same thing Sunday evening and I was just embarrassed to be a Buc fanatic not because they lost but because they didn’t compete for 3 qtrs.

Quick story, two years ago, I was at 24 hr fitness in Cedar Hill TX (Dallas suburb) and it’s where Dez Bryant and his boys play basketball. So I walk in with all my Bucs gear and get up and play and we have fun (Dez is a phenom athlete) and Dez laughs at me saying you should be embarrassed to where that here. I stood up for my Bucs and at the time Schiano was HC and the only thing Dez said to me was comeback when they learn to compete.

I mean I was sour and disappointed that this is the reputation our team has and I’m tired of being the butt of jokes.

So my expectations won’t change until these guys get the right players and some winners and playmakers that want to be great. The fact that Bowers and a few others are still on this roster is just sickening.

  28. Architek Says:

And for the record the Bucs missed out out their franchise QB for good value in passing on trading back up for Derek Carr!

  29. Aaron Downing Says:

I don’t know what it is about this site, but it attracts the most depressing, glass half empty fans of any site in the world.

Last week we played a VERY good defense and were out of sync on offense most of the game. We are still trying to find our identity and get some continuity on offense, plus our offensive coordinator was not even there.

As for the defense, they gave up 17 of the 20 points off of turnovers. I expected more of a pass rush, but the Panthers had a great game plan, putting Anderson in the position to make quick passes and a lot of multiple redirects to keep us off balance.

Do I think we should have won that game, yes. Do I think we should all panic and immediately declare that we suck, no. We will be fine. They say you take the biggest leap from week 1 to week 2. Lets hope that happens and try to stay positive.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Harry…well exactly it and all the typos. lol Late night and just woke up.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Yikes I went back and there was a helluva lot of typos.

Forgive me people. I had to give up coffee a few weeks ago, because of a nasty ulcer.

Ha this team sure isn’t going to help it much, I know. Just get the win tomorrow and things will be okay for atleast 3 days or so. Go Bucs!

  32. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

Canadian- you read that wrong. I’m supporting the optimist.
We aren’t sheep- just realize it will take time

  33. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

I remain optimistic- the fact that,,despite all that upheaval, we were still in the game with minutes to play- was a good sing to me.
The Panthers have a great defense, and are defending NFC south champs.

This team will be ok- just need time to get acclimated to new system/teammates

    The over-the-top panic is unwarranted

  34. bucrightoff Says:

To the people saying why so down after 1 game: Look at the upcoming schedule after this week…

    @Atlanta
    @Pittsburgh
    @New Orleans
    Baltimore

On paper, that’s 3 losses at least and since it’s at Pittsburgh, likely 4 losses. So realistically (and not being a homer) the best case scenario here is a 2-4 start, with 1-5 quite possible and 0-6 likely if they lose tomorrow. We’re once again looking at the season effectively being over by the end of September. I think most of us are just sick and tired of being irrelevant before the season is even half over.

I hope they can turn it around, and they better go out tomorrow and crush what appears to be an overmatched Rams team. But make no mistake a loss tomorrow is season over and time to start thinking about the draft…after week 2. Unacceptable.

  35. BucIt941 Says:

@Kevin couldn’t agree with you more. Mike James is the best pure runner we have in that stable right now. I know he got pushed down the chart because of Charles Sims draft pick but the guy did really well. Although the sample size versus Martin or Rainey is much smaller than it is for James. When James goes TO Seattle against the best defense in the league and beast modes all over them…. That says a lot about the kind of RB he is. Then goes and looks solid in 2 more games. Just saying I want that on the field as often as possible! May not be able to catch a TD but can throw one!

  36. Kevin1 Says:

    As stated before.

One week in aaaannnnndddd season over.

To deny that means your wearing rose colored glasses and can’t see what is so painfully obvious to the rest of us.

  37. BoJim Says:

    Baaaaaaaaa

  38. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

    Baaaaaa

  39. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

    Dungy started 0-5
    With Warren Sapp
    With Derrick Brooks
    With John lynch
    With Ronde Barber
    With Mike Alstot
    With Warrick Dunn.

It takes time to rebuild a team. Despite the PR nonsense about this not being a rebuild- of course it is.
I still believe Lovie will be the man here. Just gonna take a season or two.
Relax, and be patient. If you don’t win the SuperBowl, who cares where else you finish!
At least it feels like we are heading the right way
A QB, De, and Guard- and we Wil be contenders

  40. Mr. Mudge Says:

Playoffs this year were a pipe dream… Herm Edwards really screwed the pooch with his SB prediction.

I’m looking for steady improvement and a winning mindset to take hold. That is the foundation for the future. And if improvement comes quickly enough, who knows, maybe they could sneak into the playoffs. But to characterize anything less than playoffs as a complete failure is the mark of an intolerant fan. As much as Bucs fans have suffered with crap for many previous seasons of inept playing, coaching, and personnel moves, you’ve gotta let it go and give L&L the benefit of the doubt for the first season. Lots of people don’t wanna hear this, but it’s reality – it may take some time with all the turnover and a very young roster. Some of you may wish to cite the regime’s “we don’t expect patience” statement — I’d just say that public relations statements have to be taken with a grain of salt. An 8-8 year would be a welcome sight if we were seeing improvement in a number of key areas.

  41. Thomas Says:

landry’s right. Raheem,Dom,Schiano decimated the roster with awful draft/personnel decision combined with poor development.

  42. BUCTROOPER Says:

The scorched earth of 5 failed Dominik drafts will take a long time to dig out from under.

    Worst.

  43. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ Capt Tim

“At least it feels like we are heading the right way”

Wow!? Are you serous? How did that God awful display last Sunday make you feel like we’re heading the right way? To me it felt like we’re heading towards a top 5 draft pick season unless the players and coaches get their sh!t together. I think they’re capable of playing and coaching better, but to say after a 1-3 preseason that featured an offense that looked out of sync and last Sunday that was a clusterf@ck for 3.25 quarters is somehow “heading the right way” is just baffling!

  44. Buc1987 Says:

“An 8-8 year would be a welcome sight if we were seeing improvement in a number of key areas.”

Mr Mudge…I’ll take 6-10 with a lot of close losses. At least look better than Schiano’s Bucs, until they do, I’m keeping score.

Schiano went 7-9 in his first season. Will Lovie get 7 wins? Pshhh IDK!

Right now my unofficial score card has Schiano 1 and Lovie 0. If they look flat again tomorrow and lose to the Lambs in a disgusting way again. Then it’s another point for Greg.

  45. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

The best news I have read on here lately is attorney Brett Metcalf is back advertising here again. It is all too easy to get a DUI these days, especially the way the Bucs are playing.
Brett is an awesome criminal defense attorney, if you ever need one.

  46. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ capt tim.

When Dungy started the 1996 season, Dunn and Barber were not on the team. They did not get drafted until 1997. If you are going to post about the Bucs’ history, please know the bucs’ history.
