“It’s A More Difficult Thing Than People Realize”

September 10th, 2014

TedfordcoachinghardYes, not having Jeff Tedford available to call the Jeff Tedford offense was a real issue for the Bucs on opening day.

Marcus Arroyo put “a different spin on the way it goes,” says Josh McCown.

McCown made it clear last night on his Total Access radio show on WDAE-AM 620, that the temporary loss of Tedford — or any offensive coordinator — is significant.

“As a play caller, it’s a more difficult thing than people realize. When you function for a while, during offseason or whatever, without being the play caller, and now all of a sudden you’re asked to do that, it’s not an easy thing,” McCown said.

The Bucs starter praised the fill-in team for Tedford against Carolina. Issues easily could have been expected but never materialized.

“I would think in those situations you might experience delays of game and things of that nature. But we really flowed pretty seamless as far as procedurally and stuff like that. And that was huge for us,” McCown said.

Today at One Buc Palace, Joe asked McCown about whether he has more comfort and confidence with Tedford in the game plan this week. McCown said he does.

Yes, the Bucs put a calm, happy face on the absence of Tedford and quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo stepping in. But that was a thin slice of baloney. The offensive coordinator is paid handsomely for a reason, and his value — and absence — was magnified on opening day for a new regime.

No doubt about it that it did. The offense will look better with him here this week I’m sure. That offense we ran on opening day seemed nothing like the one we’ve heard throughout training camp. That was lovieball no doubt about it.lovie isn’t letting his offense rests in the hands of a rookie playcaller from western Michigan opening weekend.

  2. Buc fish Says:

Dang Joe, give Tedford a break. Dude had work done on his heart. So, what if the coaches and players are sticking up for him by saying that it wasn’t a big deal that he was gone. We get it – it was a big deal! It was crappy circumstances for the Bucs and the offense suffered. We get it…

  3. FLBoyInDallas Says:

The Bucs obviously believed they could squeak by against the Panthers with a vanilla, conservative offensive game plan while waiting for Tedford to return. Except for Lane’s rumbling, stumbling gallop down the sideline we hardly saw anything at all of value from that offense until deep into the fourth quarter. It was embarrassing, actually.

  4. lightningbuc Says:

We were told all last year that no matter the reason, Glennon was supposed to “lead”, and “led” the Bucs to the worst offense. Whether it be poor O-line, lack of play-making receivers, etc. it all fell on MG8’s shoulders. Same this year. Josh McCown “LED” the Bucs to a horrifying loss to a team playing its journeyman backup QB. Lack of offensive coordinator is just an excuse for his poor play, cuz we were told he is an experienced leader.

  5. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

We tried to play smashmouth Lovieball in the absence of Tedford, and guess what ?
    It did not work.
The Bucs are not built to be a smash mouth team.

  6. Kevin1 Says:

    Both our qb’s suck.

  7. Kevin1 Says:

The one constant of this garbage franchise is the lack of a franchise qb. And the ones they did have got traded away. How with all the high draft picks they’ve had in all these years they cannot find a franchise qb is stunning when you think about it.

Give it time. One game against a top defense that has done far worse to far better QBs is hardly an indictment of McCown. Talk about small sample sizes, we’re talking a few quarters of football here.

If you don’t think handing the reins over to Arroyo doesn’t make a difference, wy don’t you check out how ALL of Arroyo’s college offenses he coordinated in the past (in college) have done…. NOT GOOD.

  9. The_Buc_Realist Says:

The worst part of this ( other than Tefford`s health) is the fact this will delay the few sheep left that still think old man mcCown is a good player. I am steeling myself for bad offense and Lovie saying that mcCown is the QB for the next 7 weeks!

I here by state that if he looks the same next week, that we all call him ” Josh MeltDown “

  10. Kevin1 Says:

I’ve been defending this crap for my 34 years on earth and I just cannot defend garbage anymore. I’m tired of hearing be patient and Yada Yada Yada. I mean really. It’s the same song and dance every single year. After year after year after year. I’m over it. Until they show some initiative to win I will not defend them anymore. And no glennon is not a franchise qb

  11. Kevin1 Says:

And for all you idiots that say “it’s just one game”. If they win this week against the lowly rams guess what tools, it’s just one game with 3 losses upcoming. Maybe 1-4 if the stars align perfectly.

  12. FLBoyInDallas Says:

^If you’re over it, then move along. The Jaguars await.

  13. RastaMon Says:

Of course… it was by comittee…should have let the kid Marcus Arroyo )(call from his gut…late last week the TE coach ,Embree, said something about playing calling by second guessing /consensus…..puke

  14. lightningbuc Says:

    Brandon,

Give McCown time? No can do. We were told by Joe and others that Glennon was supposed to perform, no matter the obstacles in his way. Got to be the same with McCown. Tedford being out is an obstacle that McCown should have overcome according to all the Glennon haters who says a QB needs to lead. No excuses.

  15. OB Says:

    Joe

It doesn’t matter who is calling the plays, it is who is executing them. We will see if McCown had stage fright or not on Sunday.

Are you going to find the answer to why the FB only ran one play for 54 yards and never touched the ball again or are you ducking the question?

This should at least get a reply?

  16. Bucnjim Says:

Sounds like more excuses. Sorry but neither OC called for Mcown to play with reckless abandon. All he was asked to do is not lose the first couple of games until the O could get their timing down. Ball security against the panthers or any defensive team is a premium. Instead they were playing hot potato with the football. All I have to say is three turnovers and 17 points for the Panthers. That is the reason we lost!

  17. knucknbuc Says:

Yea Kevin let’s go by your logic why even watch the games? Matter of fact why even play the rest on our schedule since you can see in the future and we’re going to lose 4 more . If you ask me Kevin ur the tool box here. Giving up one game into the season is the epitomy of toolish.

  18. DIEHARDBUCS Says:

Joe Please for gods sake ban KEVIN 1! He is not a bucs fan, I don’t know what he is, some kind of poor hearted soul that gives up on his team after one game. He is not a true fan, but a ban wagon, fair weather fan! Get a life Kevin1, its one game dude. Get real, 1-4 after 5 games. Your pathetic, seriously.

  19. Boomer33 Says:

Kevin is what we call a troll. He claims to be a Bucs fan, but NEVER says anything positive about them. I would suggest that he get a copy of the DVD for the undefeated season by the Dolphins and watch one game each Sunday until the season is over while wearing a Miami jersey.

  20. Gt40bear Says:

I agree that what we were fed by the Bucs was a cheap piece of lunch meat, but if anyone thinks that having Tedford back will make them an offensive juggernaut, please give me some of what you’re smoking! Unless Tedford can suit up and play guard, not much will change anytime soon! Hope I’m wrong but my great-grandmother’s name was Missouri so they are going to have to show me!

  21. Owlykat Says:

Proof is in the pudding. Tedford will be calling plays this Sunday. Let’s see if that makes any difference.

  22. Kevin#1 Says:

I know this…even IF we get a win this week. Our Zone defense is not going to hold up against the saints and falcons. Panthers no2 Qb picked it apart last week. The zone won’t work with our pass rush. Interesting I thought our pass rush would have been there Sunday and it wasn’t….along with our entire offense. I see more pass attempt’s earlier in the game with Tedford. I think before you could establish the run to open up the pass or with a smash mouth rb like lynch or lacy. But with our smaller shifty little backs it’s more important to establish the pass and open things up for our running game. Thats what I see Tedford doing different as long as he is here and well…

  23. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

How exactly was Tedford supposed to stop McClown from those idiotic decisions this past Sunday?

  24. Buc1987 Says:

Kevin 1….. is MORE than entitled to his opinion. He can be as frustrated as he wants. People actually asking Joe to ban the guy? Jeez!

1-5 is his outlook. Let him be a fan they way he wants to be a fan.

It has only been 1 game but judging by what Kevin and the rest of us saw on Sunday and given that, as just a sample of the “new” team. 1-5 is not that far out of the realm of possibility. If that’s all he’s going on by what he saw in that 1 game then I have to agree with the guy.

The team looked unprepared for that game. Period. Schiano had his team more prepared to play the Saints in last season’s home opener then Lovie did against the Panthers. Anyone that denies that, is simply blind or in denial imo.

  25. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    I agree with Buc1987

The bucs have to win 2 games for his outlook to be wrong. all he said was that this was the easiest game out of the next 5 in his opinion.

  26. lightningbuc Says:

    Buc1987,

It’s deja vu all over again! I remember last year this time, those of us not enjoying the Buccaneer crap sandwich we’ve been served were labeled “haters” and not “true” fans.

    For these guys, it’s JoeRoseColoredGlassesBucsFan.com

  27. BucTrooper Says:

    I actually agree with Kevin1.

I don’t blame him for being frustrated with being told to be patient… for 12 years.

I don’t blame him for having to sit through “youngry” and “toes on the line.”

I don’t blame him for wanting to see a franchise QB that sticks with the team for a good stretch like a Favre, a Brady, or a Manning.

And he’s got a darn good point: the Bucs play ANOTHER team with a back-up quarterback and a good defense. How’d that work out last week? It was an utter embarrassment.

Quite frankly, I think the fans that blindly support the team regardless of what they do aren’t the real fans. You’re supporting a team that has had 3 stretches of 7 losses or greater in the past 5 season. And you dare call Kevin a NON-FAN because he’s sick of watching it?

  28. Biff Barker Says:

    Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

How exactly was Tedford supposed to stop McClown from those idiotic decisions this past Sunday?
    ———————–

McCown had the jitters and tried to do too much. Tedford may have been a calming factor. It’s still on McCown though. That was Lovie’s rationale for bringing in a 14 year vet right?

  29. CocoaBchBuc Says:

Real Buc fans went through 0 – 26..and still cheered them on. You are either a true die hard fan or your not. It doesn’t really matter, even the bandwagoner has a place driving revenue. Welcome to the new NFL..

  30. DB55 Says:

Here’s a bright spot that no one is talking about, Meyers. He play much better than I expected. 6 catches for 41 yrds, led the team in receiving. I know that’s pretty pitiful but a bright spot nevertheless?!??!?

  31. Brandon Says:

The offense was still just as good if not better than the one that started 2013 despite having 16 games and an entire offseason to assimilate the offense. But of course this offense had a new QB, new OL, rookie WR and TE, and a new playcaller. I think the “fans” calling for Smith, Licht, and McCown to be burned at the stake need to give them a little bit of time.

  32. DB55 Says:

    Leaders

    McCown 22/35 – 183yrds – 2td 2ints

    Lane – 1 rush – 54 yrds / McCown 3 rushes 27yrds / Rainey 4rushes 12 yrds / Martin 9 rushes – 9 yrds

    Meyers 6 catches 41yrds / Evans 5 catches 37 yrds / Vjax 4 catches 36 yrds

    David 9 tackles 1 asst / McCoy 8 tackles 1 sack

  33. Andrew 1 Says:

Its good that he’s back, but if we can’t put heat on their QB our defense will fold, and unfortunately we dont have the offense to make huge comebacks week after week. Put pressure on their freakin QB, I dont care if we have to blitz the whole damn game!

“Real Buc fans went through 0 – 26”

Where in the ef do you people come from?

SMDH so unless you went through that period of time you’re not a real fan?

    Dayum. SMDH again.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

    I concur with Andrew.

Just get this freaking win to soothe my red and pewter heart if only until Thursday night, then so be it. 3 days of joy then it’s off to Hotlanta for our Bucs.

Yipee bring on that meager low powered Falcons offense. We can do it Matt Ryan is a chump compared to Derek Andersen.

How’s that for homerism is that good enough for you rah rah “Real Fan” people on here? SHUT DUP with it.

  36. DallasBuc Says:

Wow! The fan police are out in full force today! Ask a fan harassed repeatedly by the fan police since this regime started making terrible personnel decisions back in free agency I am quite used to it. I am curious if Joe has ever banned someone for not being a “true” fan at the request of another poster? All these “true” fans take themselves and their perfect little unwritten fanboy code of conduct way too seriously! They know who they are and they are so damn amusing!

  37. Incognito Says:

JC the idea the bucs were trying to spin the fact Tedford wasn’t gonna call the game no big deal is about as 1/2 ass as saying were gonna be a running team in a passing league with a patchwork OL.

  38. CocoaBchBuc Says:

@Buc1987…..very convienent editing. The emphasis should have been on “still cheered them on” I have always respected your opinions/post, but more than half the post here are gloom, despair, and agony on me, and you chose to join them …roflmao… I am the the one ‘smh’

  39. buc4lyfe Says:

No doubt and I’d respect that reasoning if they had said that before they got manhandled on Sunday and no one would panic, just say it’s difficult but next man up. you cant down play the value of your offensive coordinator before a game then use this excuse when you played a horrifying ball, lack of respect for their fan base.

Once again the bucs won the off season award for splash, all bark no bite, if they lose to the rams Sunday were looking at Atlanta on a short week next Thursday then the steelers, as much as I hate to say it if we’re 0-4 I’d rather go with Mr check down over Mr turnover

  40. buc4lyfe Says:

If that was mike Glennon out there the excuses would have been unlimited from MGM about the line, the panthers defense yada yada. Everyone else would have crucified Glennon. Mccown doesn’t get a pass at his age. NFL years are like dog years, time to take him out in the back yard ol yeller style

  41. Incognito Says:

    @ cocoa
The idea you respect buc1987 doesn’t bode we’ll for you.
I thought 1987 was banned from here?

  42. Buc1987 Says:

@CocoaBchBuc….well sorry to single you out for something that YOU said.

That was your assumption am I correct? That’s what a “real fan” is? Thick and thin and never doom and gloom?

Because I didn’t drink the Kool-Aid of “We don’t expect our fans to be patient” rhetoric but if our GM and coach are going to go out and make these types of statements and then put that crap out there that we saw on the field on this past Sunday.

Does look good for the future of the season? Did they even look competitive? Be honest with yourselves.

  43. Buc1987 Says:

I mean I wanna trust Lovie. Look at his past record, a Dungy disciple and all what’s not to like or be positive about, right? Hell I trusted in Schiano for damn sake. But what I saw on Sunday for 3 qrtrs of play???? Whatever I can’t explain it.

All I can do is hope it gets better. Go Bucs

  44. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc1987

Were you here a few days ago when the majority of posters were saying that you have to be an idiot or crazy to be a bucs fan? On a bucs fan website no less! This fickle fan base can be deplorable at times. Yea, saying you’re only a true fan if you were here for the 0-26 seasons is a little over the top, but people who say you’re an idiot or crazy for being a bucs fan and then claim to be fans? No, they’re not really true bucs fans in my book, and I’m not ashamed to say that at all. And there are a bunch of those posers on this site to.

So that means what? I committed a crime or a sin to you?

  46. Oahubuc Says:

    McCown is trash.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

“were you here a few days ago when the majority of posters were saying that you have to be an idiot or crazy to be a bucs fan?”

I read that and thought they were just being sarcastic. I seriously did. I saw you blasting them one.

I look at this way and tell me if I’m wrong all you people that talk about “true fans” or “real fans”. I was at the game this past Sunday. I don’t know the attendance but judging by how many fans do not sit in there seats during the damn games and just prance around the concourse, I’ll guess 40,000 or so.

So take that 40,000 and take every other Buc fan on planet earth and add them up. How many of them actually comment on JBF on a regular basis or even care to? There you have it. Nope I think most of us regulars are pretty hard core fans. If we take so much time out of our day to talk about this team that causes us so much misery all the time, then we have to be diehard fans.

    The end.

  48. Andrew 1 Says:

I didnt know they were being sarcastic, and if they were then… they got me lol. look, far be it from me to say who is a fan and who isn’t, BUT there is NO DOUBT in my mind that things would be a lot better for our team if the people who say they root for our team were a whole lot more supportive.

  49. DallasBuc Says:

Andrew- it wasn’t so long ago you were among the other fan police calling into question my loyalty because of how hard I have been on the new regime and personel they’ve brought in. You don’t get to have final say on what the correct way to be a fan of a sports team is. You do it your way and stop questioning the loyalty of others.

  50. DallasBuc Says:

Buc1987- that was well said. One could argue that those who are the most critical are the best fans because they care enough to call out the bad and still be there on Sundays. Now I don’t make that argument because I think it is stupid and highly arrogant to tell people how to feel about anything, especially a sports team. I guess puffing out their chest and holding up some arbitrary true fan meter is their way of being loyal in a weird childish way. Either way the fan police are on the beat lately and they are beating desenters over the head with their fan purity.

  51. CocoaBchBuc Says:

Let’s get this clear…I never said if you weren’t here for the ofer26 you weren’t a true Buc fan…I stated we still cheered them on. I don’t drink the Kool Aid, but I don’t submit after 1 game in a 16 game season. Fan Up!!

  52. Andrew 1 Says:

Very true, Ive called you out before. But lets be honest, for a person who calls themselves a bucs fan, you still haven’t given me one thing you like about this new team, AND you continue to bash the bucs, so what the hell else am I supposed to think. I’ll repeat myself “there is NO DOUBT in my mind that things would be a lot better for our team if the people who say they root for our team were a whole lot more supportive”. In the mean time, I’ll hope we get half the kind of fan support that browns fans give to their losing team year after year.

  53. WalkdaPlank Says:

    @Dallas

    Those Seahawks fans though……..lol ugh

  54. nate Says:

We need to start thinking about drafting mariota or winston… ij telling u guys u can only go as far as ur qb! Look at atlanta past week crappy team but still pulled it off…

  55. Soggybottom Says:

@DallasBuc, I did that fan police thing to you during the preseason, I think it was a easy trap to fall into because I just could not stand what you said to be the truth, but after just one real game with our unsolved problems =QB ect, and also with what our division rivals got going on, no way we make the playoffs this year.. they can call me doom and gloom if they want, I know the truth hurts..

  56. DallasBuc Says:

Soggy- you were just ripping me yesterday or earlier today. Glad we can agree that some mistakes have been made. Unfortunately we now have proof of those mistakes from a meaningful game. The writing was on the wall all through the offseason/preseason but too many dismissed it. Even in that Buffalo game we saw McCown and oline completely poop themselves for the first several series before the starters were able to put something together. Johnson was garbage the whole way through. Maybe preseason isn’t completely useless after all!

  57. Soggybottom Says:

@DallasBuc, True, The writing was on the wall but it was hard for me to read I guess, anyways ya yesterday was a little much.. Sorry..

  58. Andrew 1 Says:

Lol, STILL waiting on that one thing you like about this team. Comon man, even the most jaded of bucs fans would have at least one positive thing to say about this team. From you through, mr. hardcore bucs fan, I wont hold my breath.

  59. Andrew 1 Says:

    that was @ Dallas

  60. DallasBuc Says:

Andrew- “…you still haven’t given me one thing you like about this new team, AND you continue to bash the bucs, so what the hell else am I supposed to think”
First of all even if I like none of the moves made by the new regime doesn’t make me less of a fan. Just because they have made lots of moves doesn’t mean they are any good. So far I have kinda been right which goes with my whole quantity over quality mantra that has finally started to resonate around here. However to answer that particular question I have been in favor of the Verner signing although it came at the cost of seeing a better corner walk. So far all that Revis money now seems tied up in players that are still unproven.
Now, this whole assertion that I continue to “bash the Bucs” is utter nonsense. It is criticism of decisions and players, not team bashing. If we sat next to each other on Sundays there would be no doubt who my football team is regardless of how critical I am.

  61. DallasBuc Says:

    Andrew- have a little patience…

  62. Andrew 1 Says:

Well hallelujah! I think I just got Dallas to say something he actually likes about his team for a change. Ok, it wasn’t much of a compliment, but I’ll take it. btw Revis doesnt look like the dominant CB he once was. Watched the pats vs dolphins game and he was getting schooled by Wallace.

Also, when you say “have a little patience”, I could be saying the same thing to you. After all we’ve only played one game for crying out loud. That’s right, a total of one. whole. game.

  63. Soggybottom Says:

I am kind of glad to hear that about revis just because he is not on our team anymore and maybe it was’nt a mistake cutting him even though the point about saving money?

  64. DallasBuc Says:

Andrew- Yeah one whole game that was a complete embarrassment (Lovie’s word) for our highly publicized, darling, new look, Lovie run, anti-Schiano, Buc ball, not-a-rebuilding-year Bucs to turn around and poop the bed at home on opening day. I’m cool with being patient when you give me hope at QB, quality FA acquisitions and less bragging from our rookie lapdog GM! Deal?

  65. Soggybottom Says:

I would almost be ok with the loss of game one if it just was not to the panthers, Hurts worse to me..

  66. nate Says:

This team just sucks.. and if it doesnt suck the best it will be is medium of the pack…man wish im wrong but its pretty obvious now….I do believe we will win the next game…this team just isnt that good..

  67. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Buc1987

Glad to have you back brotha. Hopefully everything is well w/u and the family.

  68. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

“Meybe those who are the most critical, are the best fans, because we expect the most”
    Lmao
No- it means you are self indulged, unrealistic lil titbabies.
    Crying and pooping your diapers.
“No matter what, we were promised a top ten offense!”
Well, if you are stupid enough to believe- a team with half new players, totally new offensive scheme, all new new Coaches, and the Coordinator in the hospital- was gonna open the the season with a top ten offense- then I got swamp land to sell your dumb ass.
    They lost a football game.
They will lose a lot more. But if we are correct- they will be improving, and soon, as in Chicago- we I’ll have a great defense, and a good offense.
Didn’t happen Lovies first year there. Won’t happen first year here.
No one intelligent thought it would.

But if you whinny lil crybabies can’t live with it, then
    A) fall on fall- kick and scream
    B) get up, run in circles, waving hands and crying
    C) castrate yourselfs- as you are unworthy of manhood
    D) head down to the skyway bridge, and throw yourselfs in!!

If you expected this totally rebuilt team to open up as NFC Champions- then you don’t know anything about building a football team.

  69. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

    Sorry- fall on Floor!
Yes, this team as sucked for a while.
Only one out of 32 is a winner every year
The other 31 are trying to improve.
    16 teams lost this weekend.
Stop being such crybaby Drama queens. It’s nauseating
Can’t stand- then go watch the Falcons, and leave us grown up Buc fans free from your childishness

  70. Boomer33 Says:

Those of you who are crying about us not having a franchise QB, please tell me who is it that was available this year that is better than who we signed?

  71. Kevin1 Says:

I’ve been a bucs fan since 1992 guys. Sorry for my frustration but seriously this stuff gets old. And we should be hard on the team after the junk they’ve put out there the last 5-6 years. Excuse me for demanding more than 4 or 5 wins every year. The bucs are the only team I watch and care about. It’s just so hard to be positive when you see what we saw Sunday.

  72. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

Kevin 1- I hear you brother. But, after two mistakes, history tells us that Lovie is the right direction. He has a better record than 85% of other current NFL coaches.
Unfortunately, when you change direction- it takes a while.
We replaced entire office staff, Coaching Staff, and over half the players.
    That isn’t gonna jell overnight.

But, after wasting time on two previous regimes, and allowing Gruden to drain us of talent- it had to change.

Only one team every year is happy with its QB, all the others are bitching.
Finally, we are on the right track.
Only a little more patience is needed

  73. Kevin1 Says:

I hear ya cap’n it’s just patience right now to me is a “naughty” word. But I know all the lingo you say is true I know that. Just frustrating but being patient is all we can do and hope for the best come Sunday.
