“It’s A More Difficult Thing Than People Realize”

Yes, not having Jeff Tedford available to call the Jeff Tedford offense was a real issue for the Bucs on opening day.
Marcus Arroyo put “a different spin on the way it goes,” says Josh McCown.
McCown made it clear last night on his Total Access radio show on WDAE-AM 620, that the temporary loss of Tedford — or any offensive coordinator — is significant.
“As a play caller, it’s a more difficult thing than people realize. When you function for a while, during offseason or whatever, without being the play caller, and now all of a sudden you’re asked to do that, it’s not an easy thing,” McCown said.
The Bucs starter praised the fill-in team for Tedford against Carolina. Issues easily could have been expected but never materialized.
“I would think in those situations you might experience delays of game and things of that nature. But we really flowed pretty seamless as far as procedurally and stuff like that. And that was huge for us,” McCown said.
Today at One Buc Palace, Joe asked McCown about whether he has more comfort and confidence with Tedford in the game plan this week. McCown said he does.
Yes, the Bucs put a calm, happy face on the absence of Tedford and quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo stepping in. But that was a thin slice of baloney. The offensive coordinator is paid handsomely for a reason, and his value — and absence — was magnified on opening day for a new regime.

No doubt about it that it did. The offense will look better with him here this week I’m sure. That offense we ran on opening day seemed nothing like the one we’ve heard throughout training camp. That was lovieball no doubt about it.lovie isn’t letting his offense rests in the hands of a rookie playcaller from western Michigan opening weekend.

The Bucs obviously believed they could squeak by against the Panthers with a vanilla, conservative offensive game plan while waiting for Tedford to return. Except for Lane’s rumbling, stumbling gallop down the sideline we hardly saw anything at all of value from that offense until deep into the fourth quarter. It was embarrassing, actually.

The one constant of this garbage franchise is the lack of a franchise qb. And the ones they did have got traded away. How with all the high draft picks they’ve had in all these years they cannot find a franchise qb is stunning when you think about it.

Give it time. One game against a top defense that has done far worse to far better QBs is hardly an indictment of McCown. Talk about small sample sizes, we’re talking a few quarters of football here.
If you don’t think handing the reins over to Arroyo doesn’t make a difference, wy don’t you check out how ALL of Arroyo’s college offenses he coordinated in the past (in college) have done…. NOT GOOD.

Tedford being out is an obstacle that McCown should have overcome according to all the Glennon haters who says a QB needs to lead. No excuses.

Sounds like more excuses. Sorry but neither OC called for Mcown to play with reckless abandon. All he was asked to do is not lose the first couple of games until the O could get their timing down. Ball security against the panthers or any defensive team is a premium. Instead they were playing hot potato with the football. All I have to say is three turnovers and 17 points for the Panthers. That is the reason we lost!

I agree that what we were fed by the Bucs was a cheap piece of lunch meat, but if anyone thinks that having Tedford back will make them an offensive juggernaut, please give me some of what you’re smoking! Unless Tedford can suit up and play guard, not much will change anytime soon! Hope I’m wrong but my great-grandmother’s name was Missouri so they are going to have to show me!

I know this…even IF we get a win this week. Our Zone defense is not going to hold up against the saints and falcons. Panthers no2 Qb picked it apart last week. The zone won’t work with our pass rush. Interesting I thought our pass rush would have been there Sunday and it wasn’t….along with our entire offense. I see more pass attempt’s earlier in the game with Tedford. I think before you could establish the run to open up the pass or with a smash mouth rb like lynch or lacy. But with our smaller shifty little backs it’s more important to establish the pass and open things up for our running game. Thats what I see Tedford doing different as long as he is here and well…

It has only been 1 game but judging by what Kevin and the rest of us saw on Sunday and given that, as just a sample of the “new” team. 1-5 is not that far out of the realm of possibility. If that’s all he’s going on by what he saw in that 1 game then I have to agree with the guy.
The team looked unprepared for that game. Period. Schiano had his team more prepared to play the Saints in last season’s home opener then Lovie did against the Panthers. Anyone that denies that, is simply blind or in denial imo.

I actually agree with Kevin1.
I don’t blame him for being frustrated with being told to be patient… for 12 years.
I don’t blame him for having to sit through “youngry” and “toes on the line.”
I don’t blame him for wanting to see a franchise QB that sticks with the team for a good stretch like a Favre, a Brady, or a Manning.
And he’s got a darn good point: the Bucs play ANOTHER team with a back-up quarterback and a good defense. How’d that work out last week? It was an utter embarrassment.
Quite frankly, I think the fans that blindly support the team regardless of what they do aren’t the real fans. You’re supporting a team that has had 3 stretches of 7 losses or greater in the past 5 season. And you dare call Kevin a NON-FAN because he’s sick of watching it?

The offense was still just as good if not better than the one that started 2013 despite having 16 games and an entire offseason to assimilate the offense. But of course this offense had a new QB, new OL, rookie WR and TE, and a new playcaller. I think the “fans” calling for Smith, Licht, and McCown to be burned at the stake need to give them a little bit of time.

I don’t know the attendance but judging by how many fans do not sit in there seats during the damn games and just prance around the concourse, I’ll guess 40,000 or so.

Nope I think most of us regulars are pretty hard core fans. If we take so much time out of our day to talk about this team that causes us so much misery all the time, then we have to be diehard fans.

Buc1987- that was well said. One could argue that those who are the most critical are the best fans because they care enough to call out the bad and still be there on Sundays. Now I don’t make that argument because I think it is stupid and highly arrogant to tell people how to feel about anything, especially a sports team. Soggy- you were just ripping me yesterday or earlier today. Glad we can agree that some mistakes have been made. Unfortunately we now have proof of those mistakes from a meaningful game. The writing was on the wall all through the offseason/preseason but too many dismissed it. Even in that Buffalo game we saw McCown and oline completely poop themselves for the first several series before the starters were able to put something together. Johnson was garbage the whole way through. Maybe preseason isn’t completely useless after all!

First of all even if I like none of the moves made by the new regime doesn’t make me less of a fan. Just because they have made lots of moves doesn’t mean they are any good. So far I have kinda been right which goes with my whole quantity over quality mantra that has finally started to resonate around here. However to answer that particular question I have been in favor of the Verner signing although it came at the cost of seeing a better corner walk. So far all that Revis money now seems tied up in players that are still unproven.
Now, this whole assertion that I continue to “bash the Bucs” is utter nonsense. It is criticism of decisions and players, not team bashing. If we sat next to each other on Sundays there would be no doubt who my football team is regardless of how critical I am.

I’ve been a bucs fan since 1992 guys. Sorry for my frustration but seriously this stuff gets old. And we should be hard on the team after the junk they’ve put out there the last 5-6 years. Excuse me for demanding more than 4 or 5 wins every year. The bucs are the only team I watch and care about. It’s just so hard to be positive when you see what we saw Sunday.

Kevin 1- I hear you brother. But, after two mistakes, history tells us that Lovie is the right direction. He has a better record than 85% of other current NFL coaches.
Unfortunately, when you change direction- it takes a while.
We replaced entire office staff, Coaching Staff, and over half the players.
That isn’t gonna jell overnight.
But, after wasting time on two previous regimes, and allowing Gruden to drain us of talent- it had to change.
Only one team every year is happy with its QB, all the others are bitching.
Finally, we are on the right track.

I hear ya cap’n it’s just patience right now to me is a “naughty” word. But I know all the lingo you say is true I know that. Just frustrating but being patient is all we can do and hope for the best come Sunday.
