Solomon Patton “Expected” On 53-Man Roster

September 6th, 2014
Bucs return man Solomon Patton is expected to be promoted to the 53-man roster for tomorrow's season-opener.

Bucs return man Solomon Patton is expected to be promoted to the 53-man roster for tomorrow’s season-opener.

It was odd to Joe that a guy who usurped Eric Page of return duties in training camp and preseason didn’t make the final 53-man roster. It was even more odd that Bobby Rainey was listed as the kickoff return man.

It seems that is going to change before the first game is played tomorrow against the Stinking Panthers. Per Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, rookie Solomon Patton, currently on the Bucs practice squad, won’t be there for long.

This is sort of a relief. It was (and is) just odd that the Bucs were going to have guys largely untested as return men in the NFL. With Charles Sims out with an injury and Mike James banged up, the Bucs didn’t need to risk Rainey getting blasted returning kicks.

Congrats Patton for hanging in there. As a prominent Florida lawmaker once said so eloquently, “Go Gata.'”

Papers are signed by the way. He’s on the active roster!(Brother-in-law)

  2. Andrew 1 Says:

lol what the hell is going on. I think they’re just playing a cruel trick on me now after I said he would be our kick returner when we signed him, its been nothing but up and down with this guy. Well you cant fool me bucs, I said he will be our starting kick returner and I’m sticking to it. lol

  3. Kalind Says:

Meh. Don’t care. I generally disagree with holding a roster spot or slobs who are only good at ST. If you’re a receiver, but can’t play receiver….why are you on my team? He’s just choking a roster spot away from Owusu, or Murphy (when healthy) and that is unacceptable. Plus he’s a Gator. ::spits::

  4. Joe Says:

Alarm bells are going off for fantasy types.

  5. Orca Says:

Wonder whose roster spot he’s taking… Cousins? Hmmmm, we can only hope.

  6. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Kalind

Oh really. Gee, wonder what would’ve happened if the Bears felt the same way about Devin Hester. I mean the guy really couldn’t play CB or WR, but turned out to be the best kick returner of all time. Your Gators hate is showing.

I knew it just was a matter of time… Go Bucs and good job Solomon!!!

  8. Espo Says:

Kalind, he looked pretty good as a receiver too, although it was just preseason.

  9. Architek Says:

Bucco Bruce is smiling somewhere right now-

And Dominik is somewhere taking another shot of Bourbon.

Think it is Louis Murphy that will be gone.

    kalind,

Yes, “slobs” always find a way to make NFL rosters, don’t they? If only I could have been a “slob” like Solomon Pattton, instead of a “slob” who is overweight and drinks too much.

“Go Gatah…” Hilarious! I love it – your tax dollars at work!

Why didn’t you break the news then Brother n law, that was ur time to shine. Glad Patton is back I liked him a lot.

  15. Bucfreak Says:

Louis Murphy is out. Dang it.

  16. Brian Says:

10 offensive lineman seemed like a lot…if I had to guess I would say they wanted one more week of practice to shake out the competition between backup lineman.

  17. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Louis Murphy released. Didn’t see that one coming. Now I’m concerned that we have zero WR experience behind VJax.

  18. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Evans, Owusu, Herron, Shepard and Patton have a grand total of 4 NFL starts between. All by Owusu. That’s it. Not exactly confidence inspiring.

  19. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Where are you getting that Louis Murphy was cut?

Totally OT, but how about a poll or some predictions for Mr. McCown?

Many folks here pooh-poohed MG8’s 2013 stats which included :

    247 of 416 (59.4%) for 2608 yards and 19 TDs/9 INTs/QB rating 83.9;

which if extrapolated for a full 16 game season would be:

    304 of 512 (59.4%) for 3209 yards and 23.4 TDs/11 INTs/ QB rating 83.9

How about it? Let’s see how many are true believers vs Glennon haters.

“lol what the hell is going on.”

Lovie Smith has done a masterful job of hiding things from the Panthers until today.

I think now that the promotion of Patton was planned from the last cuts of the preseason. Think about it. The Panthers likely did not think kick returner was a valid concern. Now it is.

I hated seeing Page go, but I would have felt better if Patton had replaced him. When Patton was cut, I freaked.

Now I bow to the wisdom of Lovie Smith!
