Final Cuts Are In; Meet Your 2014 Bucs

August 30th, 2014
Da'Quan Bowers is a Buccaneer

Da’Quan Bowers will enter his fourth Tampa Bay regular season as a Buccaneer.

Announcing your Buccaneers 53-man roster for 2014 — for now.

Veteran safety Major Wright, who was battling a back ailment, was a surprise cut, along with wide receiver Solomon Patton. The rookie appeared to win the returner job in preseason, and he had a nifty touchdown catch-and-run on Thursday, a play Lovie Smith recognized as one of the true highlights. Joe suspects Lovie saw enough from Bobby Rainey to turn the returner duties over to him — for now.

Joe predicted wide receiver Russell Shepard would be on board for his special teams prowess, but, of course, roster changes can still come at any time.

Look for Charles Sims to become the Bucs’ injured reserve player “designated for return,” which means he could play in Week 9, if healthy. Sims getting that designation would open another roster spot.

  1. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

If no one jumps out in the last round of cuts, I’d expect Patton to be brought back as the return guy when they move Sims to the returnable IR on Tuesday.

  2. Zam Says:

a little light on linebackers, no?

Lovie needs to find a return man. Rainey won’t cut it I don’t believe.

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Well, other than Bowers and Murray, I can’t complain. Could still be some changes made too.

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

Dairy Queen Bowers continues to get paid based on “potential” and the true definition of potential:

“Potential means that right now, you suck….”

  5. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

So they cut Page and there is no Patton?

  6. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

The facts that Cousins is occupying a roster spot is more remarkable than Bowers dodging the bullet… or TSA security guy, whatever the case may be.

  7. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I would take cousins over Bowers any day. Bowers has failed time after time.

At least Cousins “might” get better.

  8. MR. T Says:

Cousins is still here, that’s a head scratcher. Graded terribly in every game he was in and the Bucs can’t find anyone better! Makes no sense.

  9. BucFan20 Says:

If this holds, Bowers needs to play the Lottery too. How much luck can a bust have?

  10. D-Rome Says:

Wow, Lavonte David made the team!!!!!

  11. ColinCanada Says:

The roster looks great. A little surprised by the number of olineman. Also i dont think nyone would have predicted Wright getting cut. I would not be surprised to see a db or lb claimed from waivers and a dl and ol cut.

  12. Bucnnole Says:

    COUSINS IS HOT GARBAGE!!!!

  13. Harry Says:

Cousins? Really? Man, he must have some good blackmail pics on someone. Him being on the roster is way more of a head scratcher than Cheeseburger Bowers (“potential”)

  14. Mathius Says:

hope the Bucs cut Bowers and sign M. Sam

  15. Harry Says:

Pablo told Harry the Bucs are going to trade Cousins for Incognito.

  16. Pelbuc Says:

I’m hoping they find a better player to replace Bowers, Cousins and find a kick returner. And if the Oline plays bad against Carolina, then sign Incognito and dump Cousins. BTW, any word today on Tedford? I got a weird feeling about the start of the season with a patchwork Oline and a OC missing in action. Even during our Super Bowl season, the Oline didn’t start to gel until the middle of the season. Nevertheless, I’m pumped. Go Bucs!

  17. Oahubuc Says:

Wow. Three true DT’s on a 4-3 team, plus the “mismatch” Bowers, who has “potential” on the inside. I really hope this experiment works, and he doesn’t end up grouped with the likes of Keith McCants, Evil Dexter Jackson, the Dearly Departed from his alma mater, Brian Price, etc. I’d love to see him resurrect his career, and it is amazing that he’s survived three HC’s. Got to be something there.

  18. WalkdaPlank Says:

The monstrosities known as the Bucs new uniforms should have been on the cut list.

  19. JWBucs Says:

I’m a little surprised to seeScott Solomon in place of Larry English.

  20. WalkdaPlank Says:

Bucs haven’t had a proven returner since Micheal Spurlock. Not sure why they let him go.

  21. Justin Says:

LOL Luke Stocker is the man who can’t be cut. I guess the coaches hold his 1 td in 3 seasons in high regard…also think they should have cut Bowers and sign Michael Sam, as he’s had almost as many sacks and tackles in one preseason than Bowers has had in his career. Both players are not doing anything to help our team get better nor have they since they were drafted.

  22. WalkdaPlank Says:

Still can’t believe we missed out on McCluster and Hester.

  23. SAMCRO Says:

    Now, “Just Win Baby!”

  24. BucFan20 Says:

I am sure the uniforms made the cut list. Cut in profits!

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

Gotta agree once again, the uni’s are butt ugly. Whose bright er… dim idea was this anyway? The past uniforms were way better looking even if anyone says it aint true.

  26. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Wow! You mean they selected the 53 players they felt would give this team the best chance to win?! No freaking way! What the hell?! Why weren’t the JBF commenters consulted first? What a sham!!!

  27. JWBucs Says:

I thought we already had the best uniforms before the change.

  28. Brian Says:

People are still crying about the uniforms? Get over it or go be a fan of some team with cooler uniforms…maybe the Colts or Giants are more exciting for your kind.

  29. gotbbucs Says:

Michael Sam, really? Lets sign he and Incognito and force them to live together and start a reality show.

Honestly, I have never seen a garbage player get so much publicity, and for no other reason than that he likes boys.

On topic, cutting your return man in favor of a couple junk o-lineman suprises me. This roster is far from set, expect a couple waiver claims by mid week.

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

Yeah, I know it’s like crying over spilled milk, But fan input should have come into play on selecting the color scheme of the uniforms or just leaving them as they were. Poll all the Bucs sites like your current polls and allow other fan input methods. I felt the new look would grow on me, but it has’nt. Futuristic perhaps, but wrong place wrong time.

  31. Venbuc Says:

WR Damaris Johnson cut by Eagles…looks like a good returner

  32. Vico Says:

have to agree with anyone that thinks Sam > Bowers

  33. Tomcin Says:

Couldn’t agree more gotbucs. Cousins & Bowers, give me a break. With this roster 4 wins looks pretty good.

  34. WalkdaPlank Says:

@Brian, lol nope. Won’t stop loving the Bucs just because they want to look ugly. But those uniforms belong on Gene Simmons new UFL TV show.

  35. Mark from the block Says:

The Retention of Bowers reminds me of the retaining of Quincy Black a couple years ago. I think him playing a 4-3 3 tech might be his true calling. I feel like English should have been retained, as he seemed as worst I nice situational pass rusher

  36. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I am not sold yet on Lovie’s personnel acumen. He traded for Cutler with the Bears, that right there should be a warning sign.

  37. Orca Says:

Patton will probably be re-signed when Sims goes to IR.

Cousins and Bowers aside, don’t you think you’re being just a weeeee bit overly negative?

  39. Owlykat Says:

Cousins didn’t earn a roster spot but he’s Warhop’s pet. Glennon did not earn one either, for that matter, and if he ever has to start Lovie will regret keeping the albatross. They should have kept Major Wright and Patten. Otherwise, the roster looks fine! Looking forward to the Charlotte opener.

  40. BirdDoggers Says:

More roster moves to come. I see at least three names out of the 53 that are still on the bubble.

  41. Orca Says:

I still think Cousins could be replaced by an experienced starter from the waiver wire. And calling him Warhop’s pet is kinda dumb. He wasn’t signed with some great expectations. People make too many assumptions, just so they can have an excuse to complain.

  42. Jim Walker Says:

    Who is returning punts?

  43. Sam Says:

I was really hoping the uniforms were some sort of preseason joke.

  44. Jim Says:

Conner Shaw was cut by the Browns. Sign him to the practice squad as our QB of the future!

  45. BoJim Says:

    There’s owlykat the Albatross again.

I think the uni’s might be staying for a while so deal with it.

    Conner Shaw sucks.

  46. t-dub Says:

    as for the uniforms…

everyone should embrace change. change is hard for a lot of people, but when the Bucs changed last time, we sorta won a Super Bowl.. 14 years ago!!!

So, yeah, time for a CHANGE!

The whole house.. front office, players, UNIFORMS, and fans.

    Bucs Super Bowl 2015!

  47. t-dub Says:

plus i already have my #54 jersey, so 1 week to go!!! woooooo!!

  48. buc4lyfe Says:

I can’t believe they cut Larry English in favor of Scott Solomon

  49. t-dub Says:

    I Agree.

English held his own this preaseaon.

  50. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Conner Shaw was cut by the Browns. Sign him to the practice squad as our QB of the future!

Dunno Jim, personally I’d be scared to pin any hopes on a QB that wasn’t good enough to cut it on a team who’s QB’s are as poor as what are on the Browns.

  51. Kalind Says:

Jeeze. The people who want bowers cut are lunatics. How are you gunna go into the season with only 3 Dtackles? That’s insane! Bowers is depth at three positions! And if he’s riding pine his chances of injury should be mitigated. But he’s better than masifilo. He’s better than Means. He’s better than Solomon..so, what’s the problem. All these emotional thinkers on here. Crazy.

  52. Orca Says:

I don’t think Bowers is better than Solomon or Means. You can’t be better than anybody if you can never stay healthy enough to get on the field. Bowers is a waste of space… but I hope maybe this year turns out different for him. But, if the last 3 years are any indication, this guy is a waste of a roster spot. That’s not emotional thinking – it’s realism.

  53. lion Says:

Owlykat are you mentally ill or something? Glennon sure as hell did earn a roster spot. If you think he should have been cut over Kafka then you have some serious problems. Also, please tell me what Major Wright has done this preseason/training camp to deserve a roster spot? Oh and by the way the opener is in Tampa not Charlotte. SMH.
