Calling The Final 8 Cuts/Roster Moves

August 30th, 2014

CousinsOfficially, the Bucs have eight more bodies to clear from the roster by 4 p.m.

Here’s Joe’s morning call on the final eight, and some surprise keepers.

TE Cameron Brate – Harvard rookie never had a shot.

RB Jeff Demps – The Bucs don’t need a fourth running back since they’re keeping fullback Jorvorskie Lane. Demps can’t catch or return kicks/punts, so what’s the point with Mike James ready?

QB Mike Kafka – He’ll land on the practice squad as the emergency QB

DT Matthew Masifilo – Hasn’t showed.

S Bradley McDougald – Injured, plus Keith Tandy will be a backup safety along with Major Wright.

*RB Charles Sims — Look for him to get the fancy injured reserve designation that lets him come back after half a season.

DE Ronald Talley  – Hasn’t showed.

G  Oneil Cousins – Bucs don’t need 10 offensive linemen, and Joe can’t think of a reason to keep Cousins.

If Joe’s prediction holds, then WR/special teams ace Russell Shepard has a job for the second straight season, Da’Quan Bowers can thank the Lord again, and linebacker Brandon Magee, an August pickup who was with the Browns last year, is the sixth linebacker.

And maybe more…as the Bucs pick up veteran cuts from other teams…

  2. Buccfan37 Says:

Demps just looked so tiny and fragile.

  3. eric Says:

would be surprised if they release Demps, but the other ones I agree with JOE (damn I have not even started drinking yet) I think Russell Shepard not Demps

  4. Harry Says:

thursday was the first chance I had to watch Kafka. He was absolutely dreadful. Lovie would be better off signing Joe as emergency QB

  5. JGW1981 Says:

Not according to Owlykat. We need to go into the season with Kafka and Tebow! Only then will we have a respectable qb field.

  6. Hit-55 Says:

I see Demps making it over Shepherd or Magee. We’ll see. But agree Bowers will make it. He can play DT/DE, not great at either but can play both.

  7. Phillip Says:

I really hope Cousins doesn’t make the team.. I mean they have watched his tape from this pre-season right? A statue would do better than him.. They would atleast have to run around the statue instead of just giving them a free run to the QB like Cousins is now!

  8. Spirit of '76 Says:

There will be a lot of shuffling on the practice squad as well as the final 53. Some good players will be released or put on waivers from other teams. Some of those teams are stacked with talent. With our poor record last year, there will be few teams ahead of us in slotting for those waived players.

  9. phattitudes Says:

Cousins has seemed like a pretty glaring weak link. However without him our OL depth would be 3 rookies and a 2 year player. I doubt that will fly with Lovie. Most likely more roster adjustments to come in this area after the cuts are in. The coaching staff is much higher on Cousins than the media or fan base. I suspect for now he may stay and keeping 7 receivers seems like a stretch.

  10. Tomcin Says:

I hate to think Bowers will make the cuts. What a waste. If he does make the cuts it will prove that you can make the team in the tub. I would like to see them pick up Colt McCoy if he gets cut & get rid of Kafka.

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

RB Charles Sims was already placed on I. R. yesterday wasn’t he? Someone was at least. I heard the tail end during a sport radio break, but didn’t catch the name.

I cannot believe ANYONE still thinks Demps is any good.

He rarely catches what is thrown his way.

He only had positive running yardage against 3rd stringers and it wasn’t very many yards either.

    He drops kicks.

Heck, in the last game he put the ball on the ground 4 times. Just because only one counted against him, that doesn’t mean the others did not happen.

So, he can’t catch. He can’t run unless its in a straight line with no one in front of him, and he fumbles if he is tackled.

Far as I am concerned, if Lovie Smith still keeps him, it put’s Lovie Smith’s competence in question.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I think Cousins will make the team. I don’t like it, but I think he will.

  13. Architek Says:

    Demps is such a disappointment

  14. Alberto Says:

So Scott Solomon makes it? He played well.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

BTW, if English clears waivers, I expect him to be signed to the practice squad…which is where Murray should have gone as well.

I still don’t like the fact that they cut the best kicker in Buccaneers history in favor of an unproven player. Murray could have been put on the practice squad and they could have made the switch next year.

  16. Phillip Says:

No way English still has practice squad eligibility dude was drafted same year as Freeman… Demps won’t make the team.. If he is serious about football then he needs to continue working on his hands and ball security… You can tell he’s trying to force a big play by the way he was running the other night.. Needs to take what he can get and let the splash plays happen on their own… I understand the thought of having a backup vet on the O-line but we could still do better than Cousins.. IMO get a vet utility lineman that can play all 5 positions.

  17. Jughead Says:

Quinton Pointer and Scott Solomon will be gone as well.

  18. billy buckaroo Says:

This is always a great day for surprises!
Cant wait to see what comes

  19. Robbie_G Says:

Cousins must go. He was terrible. I would rather give a UFA with upside a chance. I could care less for Demps, gave him more chances then anyone this pre-season, did not impress.

  20. Jon Says:

They will keep Cousins. No way they admit to being wrong not only on Meredith and cousins in free agency and wrong in the draft on the oline. It would tell me that maybe these guys are good at finding talent. Who have they “found”???

  21. Jon Says:

    Aren’t.

  22. Capt.Tim,Back From Davie Jones's Locker Says:

That’s a good list,Joe. I will be surprised if the actual cuts deviate much from your call.

  23. Mitch Says:

    Larry English was cut

  24. Tom Edrington Says:

OK, Bowers makes it, appears in four games, gets hurt again and goes to Injured Reserve.

Lovie thinks quietly to himself “WTF!!”

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Hopefully we cut Keith Tandy

  26. Mike Says:

Masifilo was rated by PFF as our best defensive player on Thursday, by some distance, 2 hurries and 3 stops.

He’s solid depth as well as being young, would think he’s the most likely on this list to keep his job.

  27. JBuc Says:

Demos and Kafka are now gone.

  28. JBuc Says:

    Or Demps

  29. Jon Says:

If bowers makes the we are the ones that don’t understand. Think about it…three coaching staffs and two GM’s keep him…I’d say we don’t know what they must!

  30. BK Says:

Panthers released Guard Chris Scott. Bring him in for interview.

  31. Spirit of '76 Says:

Yep, Demps and Kafka are both waived. That leaves 6 to go.

  32. Owlykat Says:

I think Colt McCoy got so much action so the Red Skins can trade their 2d QB to the Rams. McCoy proved he will make a terrific 2d QB for the Red Skins. He is ten times better than Glennon! If the trade does not go through and McCoy becomes available, I would take him and cut Glennon and put Kafka on the Practice Squad! Also interested in the Red Skin’s RB from Baylor too. I believe Murray made it so Licht can pursue A good Guard for the right side. Really Johnson could do a good job there in time, I feel, but don’t think Licht wishes to gamble on that. If Cousins makes this squad I will think that does not speak well of Lovie’s offensive judgment!

  33. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Wow, Glennon and Bowers making the roster, you would think that was Joe’s worst nightmare!

“Not according to Owlykat. We need to go into the season with Kafka and Tebow! Only then will we have a respectable qb field.”

    ROTFLMAO!

    @ Harry

Can’t really get a feel for a player (especially QB & RB) when they are playing with/against scrubs. The difference between most NFL teams is minimal when you are looking at the starting ‘units’. It’s the backups/relief players that start separating the teams, and when you get to the third string/special team aces, the difference can be huge.
In other words, I don’t think that we (fans) can have a true gauge of how good/bad he is. Not yet.

  35. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Nate Burleson released

Wow, Glennon and Bowers making the roster, you would think that was Joe’s worst nightmare!

I think that Glennon could learn quite a bit from sitting behind the journeyman, McCown.

As to Bowers, this cat has definitely used up 4 of his 9 lives. What a blessed life he has had.

  37. Orca Says:

Whether Cousins is released today remains to be seen, but I would expect him to be replaced by another player from the waiver wire by early this week.

Bowers… if Lovie keeps him despite all his injuries, he’s showing an awful lot of faith in the guy, none of which is deserved. I hope he can get healthy and give us quality snaps this year. Prefer to see him cut, though.

  38. Gus Says:

Demps is gone as of now

  39. Orca Says:

Joe, regarding Cameron Brate, you say “never had a shot”… How then, is he around until the final cuts?

  40. Spirit of '76 Says:

Just read DT Masifilo got waived.

  41. Dewey Selmon Says:

Demps is a good cut. He has one skill(speed) and Lovie sees that he is not an all around good player. Someone will take a chance on him. or he will just quit football all together and concentrate on the Rio 16 Olympics.

  42. bob Says:

    They just cut Demps.

  43. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Cut Bowers resign DT Landon Cohen

  44. tickrdr Says:

FYI: Posted by someone named Adam Caplan nfl: re Charles Sims

For teams wanting to use DIR designation for IR, have to carry roster spot until Tuesday.
    —————————————————————————-
Don’t know if this is true or not, but if so, they would have to initially have him on the roster as one of the 53, and then place on “special” IR.

  48. LUVMYBUCS Says:

DT Ronald Talley has been released

    Good Linebacker Prospects (Patriot cuts)

    • Steve Beauharnais (LB
    • Ja’Gared Davis (OLB)

  50. WalkdaPlank Says:

@LUVMYBUCS – Keith Tandy did excellent in his backup role for Goldson and Barron. In both his backup starts he recorded INT’s if I remember correctly.

  51. Trubucfan22 Says:

Hey joe, is lansanah going to be the starter opposite David? I think he looked outstanding this preseason. He cuts the line nearly as good as David does. He needs to start IMO.

  52. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

This just in: Major Wright and Soloman Patton have been released. Those two surprise me. Looks like we might keep special teams ace Russel Shephard
