Da’Quan Bowers Counts His Blessings

Da’Quan Bowers offers his thoughts on recently released teammates

The Bucs, thus far today, have cut 12 players in their quest to get to the league-mandated 53-man roster by tomorrow at 4 p.m.. It looks like 10 more will meet the Grim Reaper in the coming hours.

As as the sun begins to set on the Gulf of Mexico, turning the western horizon brillant shades of red, orange and pink, one playe is giving his thanks to a higher authority for such beauty, and for his own good fortunes.

Tonight may be a restless night for Da’Quan Bowers for it could be his last as a Buccaneer. Bowers, many believe, is on the proverbial bubble, and he turned to Twitter in sort of a public sigh of relief this afternoon..

For now.

The only thing Joe believes possibly saves Bowers is one of Lovie Smith’s Holy Trinity of football: sacks. No, Bowers doesn’t have many. But Lovie has spoken about how he believes Bowers’ quickness used at a defensive tackle slot on sure passing downs could create a mismatch, and thus, the advantage for the Bucs to put a quarterback on his back.

Of course, Bowers has been hurt much of preseason, so Lovie hasn’t had much of a chance to put this theory into motion.

Bowers’ weeks on the sidelines have given others chances to usurp him on the roster, Lovie has said. We will know in the coming hours if that happened or not.

    don’t count’m before they hatch….dog meat !

  2. Tom Edrington Says:

If you can’t survive camp/preseason without getting hurt, what will happen when the intensity dials up?

It’s simple: This is Dairy Queen “IR” Bowers…..destined for Injured Reserve.

  3. Capt.Tim, back from Davies Jones's locker Says:

    Don’t count on it!
Bowers has a burst of the line
Like McCoy, and that’s it so far. We’ll, other than a couple of our guards – who have burst in reverse- as they fly back into the QB

You can’t teach Burst. Love May have told Bowers to rest the Groin- to be ready for Game 1

We’ll know tomorrow- but don’t be surprised.
We haven’t seen much of Bowers. But what we have, he was dynamic.
Maybe Lovie didn’t want other teams to see how we are using Bowers??

I hope he makes it, heals up- and brings the speed rush we desperately need

  4. RastaMon Says:

Gaines Adams…Deja Vu…with all sincere respect…..not on these fields…..best buds

  5. Macabee Says:

    Joe,

Small point, but I’ve counted 14 cuts today with 8 to go. I’ll double check again, but I think with Barth, it’s 14.

  6. pete Says:

I hope he makes it, heals up – and becomes the player we thought he’d become!

  7. BucsQcCity Says:

At this point I give up. If L&l thinks they can do something with him then good but if he’s cut, I’m good with that

  8. Andrew 1 Says:

I’ll stick with what I said before, since he couldn’t suck it up and play in this last preseason I think he’ll be cut. But I tell you what, he could become a heck of a player at that DT position, if only he could walk on the field without injuring himself.

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

They will meet the Turk. In the NFL it is called meeting the Turk when you get cut. The grim reaper is who you meet when you die.

  10. Architek Says:

Spoken by someone that admits he’s on the bubble -

    He should be gone next!

  11. Jason.R Says:

    Should have kept Larry English.

  12. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I’ve been as impressed, if not more so, with Masifilo than Bowers at DT. No wonder that guy keeps on keeping on making the Bucs roster. Quickness, strength, technique. He’s come a long way and I look forward to him making a name for himself.

  13. teacherman777 Says:

    He made a respectful tweet.

    Its true.

We should all have compassion for these guys getting cut.

And we should all support an NFL D-League to give more players jobs!!

Jah knows the NFL can afford it!!!!

  14. Mr. Mudge Says:

Cut this bum. Waste of a roster spot.

  15. buc4lyfe Says:

That’s a really weak post, yes they said he was a first round talent coming out of the draft but they were unable Scout the tru measurable which is that fire in the belly that hunger to be great, he’s got no heart….dare i say he’s got a disease there’s no cure for, the career killing Freemanitis syndrome

  16. Thomas Says:

If anyone can get some quality snaps outta DaQuan its Lovey. He will have his best year here as a pro. If he stays healthy he will make us all very happy. If he doesn’t he will wind up on IR and we may never see him on the field again.

  17. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ FlyBoyInDallas

I’ve also been impressed with Masifilo. The dude is playing like he wants a roster spot and wont take no for an answer. He’s been one of my favorites this preseason, will be interesting to see what happens to him.

  18. Martinii Says:

I think some sites are reporting Charles Sims as the injured reserve player that can return mid season. That would account for 15 cuts. I don’t think Bowers deserves a roster spot. I believe his college reputation and a brief stretch at DT during the Miami preseason game is all he can hang his hat on. I personally hope Gholston can play.

It wouldn’t take much for him to have his best year. Methinks he gets cut though.

  20. BFFL Says:

The only reason Bowers is still here is because the other guys are actually worse, not because Bowers is dynamic in any way.

  21. BucsFanInChina Says:

Lordy lordy I pray to thee on high that our Brother Da’Quan finds fellowship in thee holy choir singing praises to Your name. Brother Da’Quan has lost his way on his path to being a maker of plays and has found himself warming Thee bench. Also o Lordy lordy on high I pray that Brother Licht doesn’t find himself in traditional Bucs GM temptation in partaking in Clemson DEs. Can I get an amen? Amen.

  23. Lion Says:

The thing I love about all this is Schiano would have never had the football I.Q. to even consider doing something like this. The fact that Lovie can see a positive in a player’s game and exploit it is something to be thankful for. Let’s face it, we haven’t had very many great football minds around here for quite a while. Lovie will without a doubt be the saving grace for this franchise.

  24. Orca Says:

^^ Schiano has football I.Q. That wasn’t his problem. He just had poor people I.Q.

BTW, he was the one who took Tim Wright as a WR and made him a TE in his rookie year – I’d say that was pretty successful.

  25. SAMCRO Says:

Joe, instead of telling us who you and your corporate media buddies want to get rid of, tell us which players you would keep instead? Let us critique your genius for awhile?

I have never seen Bucs media so hell bent on getting rid of valuable depth. This is the first time in a long time that this team has accumulated this much talent only to have the media advocate we dump some of it. I really do question whether they really want to win or if creating controversy to generate revenue is more important to them than winning.

I mean, look how they reacted with Incognito? They don’t seem to care about winning as much as the almost 80% of non media fans do. The same 80% who said yes to Richie Incognito should say yes to Da’Quan Bowers, and hope he has a fantastic breakout year. Better it happen with us than some other team like Seattle, who would sign him for his upside value.

  26. Bogiedr Says:

Orca, please, too much credit given to Sciatno! Wright was recruited to Rutgers by him. That is like telling me John Mackay was a genius for signing Jim Obradavich to play TE in 1978!!!!! Only USC fans knew Jim. No one knows Wright in the national media, not even after the trade for Mankins.

  27. Joe Says:

I mean, look how they reacted with Incognito? They don’t seem to care about winning as much as the almost 80% of non media fans do.

So, the secret to winning is signing Incognito? This would be news to the Rams, Bills and Fish.

He’s still unemployed, isn’t he? A league that most teams have garbage for guard play and the Super Bowl-winner-in-waiting still can’t find work. Hhhmmm. What do fans know that Bill Belicheat and Pete Carroll and Tom Coughlin don’t know?

  28. Joe Says:

The only reason Bowers is still here is because the other guys are actually worse, not because Bowers is dynamic in any way.

    Fair.

  29. LUVMYBUCS Says:

After all the hard work. I just witness the most amazing half of football #Proud

  30. Capt.Tim,Back From Davie Jones's Locker Says:

Schiano was the single most ignorant coach ever hired by The Bucs.
The Offensive and Defensive schemes he tried to implement, would be considered to basic by most large High schools.

He didn’t”discover” Tim Wright. The idiot tried to run an NFL offense, that didn’t utilize a TE or Slot WR.
After losing 8 games in a row or so- the clueless coach decided meybe a TE was a good idea.
His rep was so bad, he could only get his Ex players to come play for him.
Wright had Talent. Also teams weren’t used to The lil Schiano using a TE.

That idiot didn’t discover anything, except that he was in over his head.
You must have just moved here Orca.
Hard to imagine someone watched this idiot Circus- then making a statement like that.
At 0-9, you aren’t “discovering”. You are drowning- and latched on to it in desperation.
They was absolutely nothing that Schiano did here- that warrants any praise. He was a huge embarrassment- and a waste of two years of Gerald McCoys career- which is damn unforgivable!!

  31. Capt.Tim,Back From Davie Jones's Locker Says:

Still bashing the All pro Guard?
Isn’t there a scrub oak out there, that needs a hug.

I think L&L are gonna sign the last missing piece to this team- and our running game
The Kind, intelligent, and all pro Guard
    Ritchie Incognito!
Logan Mankins, Evan Dietrich Smith, and Ritchie Incognito.
Two All pros, and a soon to be all pro.
We just became an incredible running team.

And amazingly- damn near every poster here is smart enough to know it.

  32. SAMCRO Says:

“What do fans know that Bill Belicheat and Pete Carroll and Tom Coughlin don’t know?”
    __________________________________________________

We know that Bill Belicheat and Pete Carroll and Tom Coughlin don’t give a horses butt what the media thinks. Don’t believe me, go and watch their press conferences. For all the Tony Dungy mannerisms Lovie possess, you can recently tell he’s getting a little testy with the media. Try letting the pros evaluate our players for a change.

AND THE SECRET TO WINNING IS KEEPING ALL OPTIONS AVAILABLE, AND INCOGNITO IS AN OPTION THE BUCS NEEDED TO EXPLORE.

AND THE REASON THE BUCS PROBABLY HAVEN’T SIGNED INCOGNITO IS BECAUSE OF ALL THE STUPID BACKLASH THEY WOULD RECEIVE FROM OUR LOCAL MEDIA ONE WEEK FROM OPENING DAY, LIKE THE MEDIAS INVOLVEMENT IN LAST YEARS FREEMAN CONTROVERSY TO START THE SEASON. THIS CRAP YOU GUYS STIR UP BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS NEEDS TO END IF WE ARE EVER GOING TO START A SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE. QUIT STANDING ON L & L’S TAIL AND GIVE THEM YOUR BLESSING.

  33. John23 Says:

What if he comes back and turns into a Michael bennet type player like I heard he was supposed to be

  34. Drew Says:

    Joe,
Lay off Bowers already. He will become a all pro, you better hope it’s here. Lovie see’s the talent, he is not stupid, like most on here. Bowers is a stud, watch a learn dumb Buc fans, because the smart Buc fans, have known this for a long long time.

  35. stvcl Says:

Always felt Bowers was lazy, not truly committed to football, here just to get a check. Walk the plank.

  36. buc4lyfe Says:

Please stop talking up Schiano and giving him credit for scouting his own college player, a good idea doesn’t make him smart, if all i had to do was make baby’s i’d be considered successful too. A coach that can evaluate talent but can’t coach it is useless but in the nfl they call them scouts not coaches

  37. covertwo22 Says:

He will probably make it through the cuts but that doesn’t mean he”ll last if another team cuts a quality player.

  38. JonBucFan Says:

I completely agree with you captain tim. Why are these people so bent on incognito. Why cus he said a racist comment. Name a person in this blog that has never said anything racist even jokingly and I can show you all a hypocrite. If we had incognito to our Oline it automatically improves the lifespan of not only our QB but the hard mileage that our RB’s have to endure. So stop complaint about minor things. Do I believe bowers should be cut? Yes I do but I am not Lovie Smith and I have not been able to evaluate his play throughout training camp and since his move to DT. If he ends up on IR hopefully we can pick up someone who will take his place. Let’s try to stay positive bucs fans. I know it can be hard but damn.

  39. Buccfan37 Says:

I have’nt completely given up on Bower’s ever amounting to his potential with the Bucs. His frequent injuries are concerning, possibly the pattern is too much to overcome. He’s like a temp worker, only a temp player. It’s nearly a sure bet he will go out injured, probably after or during game 1, if he even plays. That he has been around this long is amazing in itself.

  40. lion Says:

    @Orca

Schiano was a great talent evaluator, not a high football I.Q. guy. He knows how to coach up individual players, but at the same token he was to harsh on his players and most reacted negatively to his style of coaching. His lack of football I.Q. lies in the fact he couldn’t come up with any schemes that exploited the talents on the team. He was stubborn in the sense that he wouldn’t change his game plan or make the necessary adjustments that all good coaches have to do to win games. It was the same damn game plan every week and other teams easily exploited it.

High football I.Q. coaches create schemes that are meant to exploit the talents of the players on the roster. That was definitely a skill that Schiano and Co. lacked to a great extent.

  41. Football fan Says:

If DaQuan put half the effort in football that he tries to do in singing, he might make a decent athlete. Can’t have two careers at the same time. He need that LT instinct.
