Jason Licht: Bucs “Were Impressed” With Incognito

August 28th, 2014

richie incognitoEmbattled out of work NFL guard Richie Incognito appears to be very much on the minds of the Bucs front office.

General manager Jason Licht joined the WFLA-TV broadcast in the fourth quarter of tonight’s game and shed the first real light on his and Lovie Smith’s meeting with Incognito this week.

“We were impressed with Richie,” Licht said. “He was remorseful for some of his actions. He seemed very contrite. We had a great meeting with him and, actually, we enjoyed it.”

After tonight’s shaky performance by new Bucs right guard Rishaw Johnson, Joe has to believe sleazy Incognito may be a step closer to a Tampa Bay contract.

As was pointed out many times on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week, if Incognito is signed after Week 1, then his 2014 contract would not be guaranteed.

Yup- I think that’s their plan.
But Rishaw looked pretty good to me

  2. Ghost Says:

I’m sorry joe but Incognito isn’t any worse than your buddy “house party”

  3. Andrew 1 Says:

Yea, we’re not getting the guy, Licht accidentally let it slip. He said during his in game interview that Incognito WAS an option. He’s already speaking about him in the past tense. We can stop all the Incognito talk now.

  4. canadian bucsfan Says:

I think Rishaw will be a good guard for us. Leave Richie outta the picture. Although that pic of him always makes me giggle.

  5. Harry Says:

    I knew it since March

  6. BucBob1 Says:

Joe don’t like Incognito so he always has to post an unflattering picture of him. And before you say there are no flattering pictures of him, you are probably right! Anyway, week one will be the tell tale sign. If we still have problems, the bucs can sign Incognito without any full contractual guarantees.

  7. Bob Digital Says:

I say bring him in. He’s better than all of our guards not named Mankind. Cousins should be doing security at Best Buy after his preseason performance.

  8. Andrew 1 Says:

We got about 4 guys battling for the RG spot. There’s got to be one that stands above the rest

  9. KeithInTampa Says:

I agree with Andrew….Incognito is a “Non-Factor” now after listening to Licht tonight…..

  10. SAMCRO Says:

So when Richie is signed, I bet you drop the sleazy BS. I’d hate to see Richie go all Ferarri on your a$$. lol

  11. canadian bucsfan Says:

    Joe.
Why does it say 9 comments but have 2 that are shown

  12. williethewonder Says:

If you can’t see that not one of those 4 guys battling for the RG spot stands above the rest, then you haven’t been paying attention. Pair Mankins with Incognito and you finally have a legitimate NFL starting pair of guards. We need players, not choirboys and Mankins will more than keep Incognito in line. Get it done.

“fter tonight’s shaky performance by new Bucs right guard Rishaw Johnson…” – Joe

I thought he did pretty good for it being his first game. In fact, I think Kafka had more time to throw then either McCown or Glennon have had the last 3 games.

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I didn’t think Licht sounded like he wanted Cognito. He had to say nice things, of course, but I doubt he is coming.

As for me, I’m on the fence and off the fence over and over. Mostly off the fence.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @canadian bucsfan

    Hit refresh.

  16. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's locker Says:

Different take. I thought Licht actually liked Ritchie, but was consciously guarding his words- so that his intent to sign Ritchie was obvious.
Ronde said he was a longtime friend if Ritchie’s.

    Mankins and Incognito as starters?
We will be able to run the ball on anyone!!

Never been afraid of getting slugged by a player. That’s called retirement in some circles.

Joe’s had a lot bigger, meaner jocks go after him that sleazy Ritchie.

  18. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ williethewonder

Haven’t been paying attention to what? One guy Reshaw has been here for, get this, one whole week and another guy is a rookie who’s only been in the league for a couple of months. Thats not exactly a whole lot of time to see exactly what those two guys are capable of. Please think before you speak and before you accuse someone of not paying attention. Looks like you’re also going to be disappointed when we dont sign Incognito. I’ll it my shorts if he does, that’s how sure I am.

  19. Andrew 1 Says:

I also find it funny how defensive people get when I say we won’t sign him. Personally I dont think it would be that bad of an idea to sign him, but that doesn’t change the fact that I dont think we will.

  20. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

    @Capt. Tim & Bonzai

I agree with your assessment on Rishaw Johnson. I watched every snap he took (I know, sign of a sick mind) and other than the very last play, he had a very good game. The only thing that can’t be gauged is the level of competition.

He did nothing to warrant not considering him for the starting RG as he looked better tonight than anyone else we’ve put in there. I know, kinda of like telling a date “Hey, for a fat chick, you don’t sweat that much!”…. but I believe he’s earned a shot for week 1. This guy played last year and started in the playoffs. If he doesn’t cut it week one, then bring in Incognito as I don’t think any other team would sign him before that and risk having to guarantee him his base salary.

  21. buccadawg Says:

I always thought o-lineman had to be bullies. Get over all the whining and sign Incognito and get the season started. The bucs will be a better team.

  22. buccadawg Says:

Sign Incognito we are a better team . If they go with what they have now they bètter keep 3 qbs.

  23. MR. T Says:

Agreed, it’s seems most likely if their is any interest in Richie it will be after wk 1 and if they have determined the RG play was poor. Having said that I think he would be an upgrade over anyone we have competing for RG now providing he is in some kind of decent playing shape. We’ll see.

  24. Stanglassman Says:

Andrew- I noticed that slip too. He’s not in the plans. I don’t think it will be too tough to find one guy to play decent guard this season but two was a stretch.

  25. Tut Says:

Rishaw played good against 2nd-3rd stringers and people on the cuff of being cut… Incognito is hands down better against starting caliber players and a better option even if its just short term. Keep Rishaw and let him continue to develop and learn but put the best players on the field!
