“Remember, It’s Only A Visit.”

The GM sends a message

Breathe easy, Bucs fans. Richie Incognito is only talk at this point.

That’s the message from Bucs general manager Jason Licht.

Tampa Tribune beat writer Woody Cummings relayed Licht’s quoted sentiment about the Bucs’ dance today with Richie Incognito via Twitter: “Remember, it’s only a visit.”

Joe’s not sure what that means. Of course it’s only a visit, but one that means the Bucs are interested in a notorious shady character.

Joe knows fans are split on what it would mean to have slur-hurling Incognito wearing a Bucs jersey. That’s understandable. “A Bucs life” is complicated, just like any other.

  1. Hank Says:

The comments Ive been reading (not just on this site) have been 90% for the signing. With everything hes been through, no way he comes in like he owns tha place and causes problems. Even if he did, they’d cut him & hed be gone from the NFL @ that point.

  2. ColiBUC Says:

If the locker room is ok with it we need to sign him!

  3. Nick Says:

Bull crap. Your grandmother “visits”. This is a job interview for a position vacancy.

  4. Lucifer Says:

“Bullying” got incognito 8 games vs ray rice’s 2 for violence against his girlfriend.

The racial slur should mean that the bucs could ask for his vocal chords being removed as a precondition for the contract or he could take a huge pay cut.

There are slimier slugs out there…

  5. Mike10 Says:

    They got my vote!

well yeah! it’s not a visit to see our super bowl trophy. Licht mean he’s not a buc….yet or never.

  7. Buchead407 Says:

    One year deal

  8. Kevin Says:

It needs to turn from a “visit” to a signing. We need serious help up front now. If someone else picks him up cause our front office is too skittish, I would have to question their desire to “win now”.

  9. Buchead407 Says:

Let him prove himself. Johnathan Martin is a p**** I’d probably bully him too and I’m 5″8

  10. Patrick in VA Says:

So, I guess everyone else is going to pretend like this isn’t the case but I’m just going to say it because it needs to be said before everyone loses their minds about this possible transaction any further. Let’s stop acting like Richie Incognito coming to Tampa will somehow tear apart the moral fabric of the team and the town.

There have been more than a few offices that I’ve worked in outside of Florida where the game “Germany or Florida” are played where all the crazy news stories are read out loud and people have to guess whether it happened in Germany or Florida. More often than not it’s one of those two places and guess who has more than their fair share of those stories about whacked out, ridiculous things that people are doing? That’s right, it’s the bay area.

So, please, stop acting as though the city’s delicate moral sensibilities will be hurt by bringing a football player in to town when the area is crawling with some of the most insane and abhorrent acts that I’ve ever heard of

  11. Buchead407 Says:

Agreed Patrick. It’s football not golf

  12. Nick Says:

I know what Licht “said”. The point is that they know the perception of him entering through the front doors. So you have to be dead set on his game tape to even have the interview. All Incognito has to do is give a mea culpa and say hes been working out and he is signed tonight. You don’t muddy the waters for a test drive.

  13. Yeah It's me! Says:

Sign him! Normally I would say no but we need him bad and he does deserve another chance & no team has the perfect roster of “angels for players”. He was a Pro Bowler in 2012, what more can we expect to get 2 weeks away from the season opener? I bet Incognito will prove he deserves another chance and that he can be a great asset to a team, at least for awhile, like 1-3 seasons. He might weird out again later but he has the talent to make it worth the risk at this time of the season. GO BUCS!!!

  14. Ernest T. Bass Says:

Sign him, sign him, sign him!! They would really sell out all home games! Not the wink wink sell outs! ;)

  15. Mitch Says:

He has 102 careers starts… As long as he can keep his head together and gets fully reinstated tampa should sign him.

  16. Eric Says:

Hard to believe they want the bad press and then not sign the guy.

  17. K.from FLA Says:

The real cancer is on the O-Line. Lets just look at Richie Incognito as a little chemo. If he steps out of line, cut him. Richie on one side, Rishaw Johnson on the other. Two mean dudes who spell double trouble for defensive linemen. I see Josh going home with a clean jersey. Lets Do This! GO BUCS!

  18. cbell96825 Says:

people we need upgrades at the guard spots hes an upgrade not much of one but he is a upgrade. and im sure mr incognito will be on his best behavior l&l will tell him just like this “just block and shut up” .

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I have been completely against Incognito from the start. I really want to stick to my guns, but after watching our OL perform for the last 3 weeks, I’m at the point where I’m warming up to the idea. With a decent OL, I think we have a legit shot at a playoff game or two.

  20. Wombat Says:

Says the guy from VA…. lol not sayin’, just sayin’….

  21. Sapp, STFU Says:

People need to chill about Incognito. If they’ve seen our O-line play and want to win some games with a healthy QB, they need to STFU.

Maybe my screen name should change a bit.

  22. Ghost Says:

Hopefully he can run off cousins. What harm can it really be to sign him to a 1 yr deal for a league minimum. We brought in Haynesworth a few years ago @ least incognito has some talent.

  23. Nick Says:

If you are outraged by Incognito’s behavior but ever rooted for a certain HoF DT, I have some off the record stories to tell you.

  24. KSV Says:

As long as he keeps his nose clean and does not cause disharmony in the locker room…give him a chance! At the end of the day I’s still rather put up with what Incognito did, instead of what Ray Rice or Michael Vick did.

  25. Chef Paul Says:

Who knew he was so popular? Four articles and 200 comments in a half a day. Guess now that the whole QB thing is over, we need someone more polarizing around this team. If they sign him, we may have found it.

  26. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I also wonder what kind of shape he is in, and if he can learn the playbook this quickly and be ready for week 1. If he’s not ready until say week 4, it might be too late. Those first few games are brutal, so we would really need him to help immediately.

  27. Yeah It's me! Says:

We get our Oline set and we could be a very scary team this year. The 2014 schedule is already looking easier than a few week ago.

  28. Patrick in VA Says:

@Wombat – I grew up in Okeechobee and spent 3 years living in Tampa. I’m “in” VA, not “from” VA

  29. FLBoyInDallas Says:

We have to have an offensive line. Simple as that. Whatever it takes.

  30. INDYbucsfan Says:

Is he any worse then cooper? He still plays in philly!

  31. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I have no problem with a one year deal so long as it is cheap and behavior incentives are in the contract. Also, he’d have to be in shape…he HAS taken a bit of time off. No way is he in game shape.

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Although, his play was on the decline in Miami

  33. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I haven’t seen so many comments since Josh Freeman was benched and fired!

  34. Buc the Haters Says:

I want our linemen to be mean & nasty (and bullies). The only things Incognito’s ever gotten into trouble for was being too mean & nasty… Just ask him to tone it down a little (not necessarily on the field, just off).

  35. bucrightoff Says:

It’d be idiotic to not sign him at this point. No guards on the roster currently are better.

  36. andres Says:

The people calling Martin a p****y are super tough and please everyone take heed as they are seriously bad-arse mo-fos!

That being said, I’d take Richie no questions ask.

  37. Chef E! Says:

I don’t care what happened!!! They are grown arse men. Stick up for yourself. If he is going to help us win, SIGN HIM NOW!!!!!!

  38. jo_mama Says:

I was RIGHT on Kyle Rudolph
I was RIGHT on Josh Freeman
I was RIGHT on Mike Williams
I was RIGHT on Aqib Talib

I was the first or one of the first ones to call for Incognito to come to Tampa and now he is coming.

I lost count on all the things I was RIGHT on.

  39. Soggybottom Says:

My face hurts I’m grinning so much, sign him..

  40. Patrick in VA Says:

@jo_mama – and for a JBF commenter, that’s really what it’s all about

  41. Eric Says:

I hope this does not happen.

  42. Theodore Says:

They should sign him to a three year deal, $12 million guaranteed, says Marc Dominic.

  43. Joe Says:

Sign him, sign him, sign him!! They would really sell out all home games! Not the wink wink sell outs! ;)

Never met one person outside of an immediate family or close friend who ever bought a football ticket for a freaking guard, much less a slug like Incognito.

  44. Piratic Says:

If this POS ever dons the uniform of the only team that I love, I’ll be very disappointed, on many levels.

  45. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“The only things Incognito’s ever gotten into trouble for was being too mean & nasty…”

    ——–

Although I’m turning the corner on us signing this guy, this statement is false. I really suggest you do a little research before you make comments like this.

I think a lot of people would go, If they had the Richie Incognito car bash challenge. whoever does the most damage to a car with 3 swings of a bat, will win 6 game tickets to a later game!!! there would be lines out the door!!!

  47. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Realist,

I agree with you on that! lol

  48. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Hawaiian Buc is right, some of you should just google “richie incognito golf” for starters!!!

  49. robert9 Says:

the man deserves a second chance!

who else the gonna sign miley cyrus?

  50. Johnny Dejay Says:

    Nnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  51. Tackleblockwin Says:

He is low risk high reward. Only question is if he is in football shape. We have had players on this team in the past do stupid things and move on from them.

  52. Yar Says:

I.e., just checking to see if he got his head out of his ass.

  53. Nick2 Says:

If the man can make some kind of public apology and I think he already has then he deserves a second chance. If Lovie and Licht spell it out that his past behavior will not be tolerated and he agrees then hey give the guy a chance. We need a guard, he’s a good one. Everyone deserves a second chance and I am all for giving it to him. Now on afterthought Licht should be raked over the coals for letting it get to this point but since we are there, SIGN THE GUY!!!

  54. Jim Walker Says:

    Toadaso

  55. bucrightoff Says:

O’Neil Cousins is absolutely horrible. A couple rookies likely won’t do much better. I think we’d all prefer not to sign Incognito, but I also think we’d prefer not to go 5-11 too. Trading for Boone is far too expensive and Incognito will be cheap and have something to prove. Sometimes it’s not about what you like but doing what you need to.

  56. Eric Says:

    Psychopath.

Wait till the final cuts and sign a guard if we have to.

Why do we have to be known as the team that signed this jack ass?

He ain’t even all that good.

  57. Buxfan Says:

WE NEED OLINEMEN IN THE WORST WAY!!!!!!!! IF NOT, KITTENS WILL HAVE OUR LUNCH!!!!! Cousins should in no way be in the NFL!!! God help us if he’s still our starter for the Panther game. For those who cringe at the thought of Glennon being the starter, that could happen the first game. Cousins will get McCown kill the first week.

  58. SAMCRO Says:

I don’t hear any Bucs players having an issue with signing Incognito, so again, it’s only the media who have their panties in a bunch. We need strong leadership L&L. Don’t pander to the media. Making decisions according to how the media feels is B.S., you’re the experts. If you think Richie can help us, and you feel your locker room is strong, then sign him.

  59. buddha Says:

Football is a TEAM sport. Incognito is not a TEAM guy. We don’t need him and I don’t want him. Lovie doesn’t normally act in desperation. We aren’t going to the Super Bowl this year. First year coaches don’t take their team to the Big Dance. This is a building year with a shot at the playoffs. If you start taking bad character guys, then you send a message to the rest of the team and suddenly you’re back behind where you started.

  60. Patrick in VA Says:

Anybody remember the reputation that Randy Moss had with the Vikings and Raiders before gettting to the Pats? Got some good coaching and good players around him and he was lights out with no problems in the locker room. None of the situations Incognito was in prior to this was with the type of coaches he’ll be around here.

Also, Lovie left St Louis the year before Incognito was drafted there. I’m sure that he’s gotten in touch with the coaches that were there to get the scoop on what kind of guy he really is so he knows what he’s in store for.

  61. MR. T Says:

Have to agree with the majority, give the guy a 1 yr. deal and keep him on a short leash. He would definitely be an upgrade over what we have now. If we expect to run the ball with any success we need help. Give him a shot.

  62. geno714 Says:

@Buddha – maybe you should do some Bucs research on first year coaches taking their teams to the Super Bowl. I’m pretty sure it has been done.

And our defense has that kind of potential. I don’t think our QB or O-Line does, but you never know.

  63. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Why take the beating for “entertaining the idea” & having him visit without the benefit of his talent put to work?
Perhaps this is a trial baloon….I think they may sign him…..the talent is there and the price is right and I think he will toe the line…..so.
“Toes on the line” since Nicks couldn’t put his toe on the line……

  64. gotbbucs Says:

Anybody who wants to see Oniel Cousins start at left guard for the entire season is in more need of psychiatric help than Richie Incognito.

  65. Kevin1 Says:

Great tedford had surgery out for awhile.

  66. biggun Says:

Split??? 90% of the last three updates suggest in favor…

  67. Joe Says:

Great tedford had surgery out for awhile.

That is not what Lovie said, nor what Joe wrote. “Procedure” and “surgery” are not the same.

  68. Jim Says:

Patrick in VA Says: the game “Germany or Florida” are played where all the crazy news stories are read out loud and people have to guess whether it happened in Germany or Florida. More often than not it’s one of those two places and guess who has more than their fair share of those stories about whacked out, ridiculous things that people are doing? _________________________________________________________________________________

That is only because 1 in 3 Floridians are born in Florida. Only Nevada and Arizona have a higher percentage of non-native born population. Every crazy from everywhere moves here. And as far as the Germany Florida debate I have only two words…..Armin Meiwes.

  69. Buc-O's 82 Says:

He wouldn’t get away with his mouth with Lovie. Sign him! …nobody’s perfect… Ask Ray Lewis… Heck look what he was involved in…

  70. FearTheFlag Says:

Does anyone REALLY think L&L would consider bringing Incognito without thoroughly doing their homework? Clearly he HAS been somewhat of a train wreck. But it’s certainly possible he realizes he has to change if he wants to continue having a very lucrative career in the NFL. He appears to be succeeding in his “bullying” program the NFL mandated.

If he understands his previous path clearly lead to failure he just might be receptive to a path that leads to acceptance, forgiveness and success. We just have to trust Lovie and the front office to decide if that is in fact possible with him.

Our D-Line coach Joe Cullen has a very sordid history but it certainly appears as though he’s doing well for himself now. In fact he could probably sympathize with Richie’s situation and maybe…just maybe, help better him.

If our coaches and players can get the best out of him AND help put his past behind him (big if I know) It’s worth it. And I think they will have to believe that to be the case before they would sign him.

I agree it’s always a risk bringing in someone with that kind of history. But our current O-Line situation demands we asses that risk.

  71. Eric Says:

I remember the year thst rah got his ten wins. They were playing guys from local car washes on the line.

Surely we can find somebody and not this piece of human debris.

  72. Dex Says:

Sapp did all kinds of stuff, but he kicked butt, Incognito, not so much. Sign him, tell him to block and shut the F up!

  73. Tbucsfan Says:

Rice gets two games for beating his wife. Lets see if Cognito has seen the error of his ways and changed.

  74. BozemanBucsFan Says:

I’ve made mistakes in the public eye and have been given second chances. Speaking from the viewpoint of an imperfect human myself I hope he get’s a second chance and thrives.

  75. RLBIGDOG Says:

Just wondering if all of you respectable gentalmen that are beating the drum for the team to bring this idiot on to the team would be doing the same if the young lady at the golf tournament that he physically assaulted were your mother ,sister, daughter or granddaughter. Because you can act like a first grader and name a hundred others players that have had problems and were allowed to keeping playing doesn’t make it right. WRONG IS WRONG and make sure football is the only reason you are defending this particular IDIOT.

Locker rooms can we very bad inhumane places at times and in the Miami case we are talking about grown men but think about this situation as a whole and not acceptable little tolerable pieces. Not that it would matter but on top of all that were not talking about a future HOFer so be patient a few decent guards will hit the market next week. With the big trade today with the Pats all you need is one above average guard and our line will be set.

    GO BUCCs
