The GM sends a message
Breathe easy, Bucs fans. Richie Incognito is only talk at this point.
That’s the message from Bucs general manager Jason Licht.
Tampa Tribune beat writer Woody Cummings relayed Licht’s quoted sentiment about the Bucs’ dance today with Richie Incognito via Twitter: “Remember, it’s only a visit.”
Joe’s not sure what that means. Of course it’s only a visit, but one that means the Bucs are interested in a notorious shady character.
Joe knows fans are split on what it would mean to have slur-hurling Incognito wearing a Bucs jersey. That’s understandable. “A Bucs life” is complicated, just like any other.

The comments Ive been reading (not just on this site) have been 90% for the signing. With everything hes been through, no way he comes in like he owns tha place and causes problems. Even if he did, they’d cut him & hed be gone from the NFL @ that point.

So, I guess everyone else is going to pretend like this isn’t the case but I’m just going to say it because it needs to be said before everyone loses their minds about this possible transaction any further. Let’s stop acting like Richie Incognito coming to Tampa will somehow tear apart the moral fabric of the team and the town.
There have been more than a few offices that I’ve worked in outside of Florida where the game “Germany or Florida” are played where all the crazy news stories are read out loud and people have to guess whether it happened in Germany or Florida. More often than not it’s one of those two places and guess who has more than their fair share of those stories about whacked out, ridiculous things that people are doing? That’s right, it’s the bay area.
So, please, stop acting as though the city’s delicate moral sensibilities will be hurt by bringing a football player in to town when the area is crawling with some of the most insane and abhorrent acts that I’ve ever heard of

I know what Licht “said”. The point is that they know the perception of him entering through the front doors. So you have to be dead set on his game tape to even have the interview. All Incognito has to do is give a mea culpa and say hes been working out and he is signed tonight. You don’t muddy the waters for a test drive.

Sign him! Normally I would say no but we need him bad and he does deserve another chance & no team has the perfect roster of “angels for players”. He was a Pro Bowler in 2012, what more can we expect to get 2 weeks away from the season opener? I bet Incognito will prove he deserves another chance and that he can be a great asset to a team, at least for awhile, like 1-3 seasons. He might weird out again later but he has the talent to make it worth the risk at this time of the season. GO BUCS!!!

I have been completely against Incognito from the start. I really want to stick to my guns, but after watching our OL perform for the last 3 weeks, I’m at the point where I’m warming up to the idea. With a decent OL, I think we have a legit shot at a playoff game or two.

As long as he keeps his nose clean and does not cause disharmony in the locker room…give him a chance! At the end of the day I’s still rather put up with what Incognito did, instead of what Ray Rice or Michael Vick did.

I also wonder what kind of shape he is in, and if he can learn the playbook this quickly and be ready for week 1. If he’s not ready until say week 4, it might be too late. Those first few games are brutal, so we would really need him to help immediately.

I have no problem with a one year deal so long as it is cheap and behavior incentives are in the contract. Also, he’d have to be in shape…he HAS taken a bit of time off. No way is he in game shape.

I want our linemen to be mean & nasty (and bullies). The only things Incognito’s ever gotten into trouble for was being too mean & nasty… Just ask him to tone it down a little (not necessarily on the field, just off).

If the man can make some kind of public apology and I think he already has then he deserves a second chance. If Lovie and Licht spell it out that his past behavior will not be tolerated and he agrees then hey give the guy a chance. We need a guard, he’s a good one. Everyone deserves a second chance and I am all for giving it to him. Now on afterthought Licht should be raked over the coals for letting it get to this point but since we are there, SIGN THE GUY!!!

O’Neil Cousins is absolutely horrible. A couple rookies likely won’t do much better. I think we’d all prefer not to sign Incognito, but I also think we’d prefer not to go 5-11 too. Trading for Boone is far too expensive and Incognito will be cheap and have something to prove. Sometimes it’s not about what you like but doing what you need to.

I don’t hear any Bucs players having an issue with signing Incognito, so again, it’s only the media who have their panties in a bunch. We need strong leadership L&L. Don’t pander to the media. Making decisions according to how the media feels is B.S., you’re the experts. If you think Richie can help us, and you feel your locker room is strong, then sign him.

Football is a TEAM sport. Incognito is not a TEAM guy. We don’t need him and I don’t want him. Lovie doesn’t normally act in desperation. We aren’t going to the Super Bowl this year. First year coaches don’t take their team to the Big Dance. This is a building year with a shot at the playoffs. If you start taking bad character guys, then you send a message to the rest of the team and suddenly you’re back behind where you started.

Anybody remember the reputation that Randy Moss had with the Vikings and Raiders before gettting to the Pats? Got some good coaching and good players around him and he was lights out with no problems in the locker room. None of the situations Incognito was in prior to this was with the type of coaches he’ll be around here.
Also, Lovie left St Louis the year before Incognito was drafted there. I’m sure that he’s gotten in touch with the coaches that were there to get the scoop on what kind of guy he really is so he knows what he’s in store for.

Does anyone REALLY think L&L would consider bringing Incognito without thoroughly doing their homework? Clearly he HAS been somewhat of a train wreck. But it’s certainly possible he realizes he has to change if he wants to continue having a very lucrative career in the NFL. He appears to be succeeding in his “bullying” program the NFL mandated.
If he understands his previous path clearly lead to failure he just might be receptive to a path that leads to acceptance, forgiveness and success. We just have to trust Lovie and the front office to decide if that is in fact possible with him.
Our D-Line coach Joe Cullen has a very sordid history but it certainly appears as though he’s doing well for himself now. In fact he could probably sympathize with Richie’s situation and maybe…just maybe, help better him.
If our coaches and players can get the best out of him AND help put his past behind him (big if I know) It’s worth it. And I think they will have to believe that to be the case before they would sign him.
I agree it’s always a risk bringing in someone with that kind of history. But our current O-Line situation demands we asses that risk.

Just wondering if all of you respectable gentalmen that are beating the drum for the team to bring this idiot on to the team would be doing the same if the young lady at the golf tournament that he physically assaulted were your mother ,sister, daughter or granddaughter. Because you can act like a first grader and name a hundred others players that have had problems and were allowed to keeping playing doesn’t make it right. WRONG IS WRONG and make sure football is the only reason you are defending this particular IDIOT.
Locker rooms can we very bad inhumane places at times and in the Miami case we are talking about grown men but think about this situation as a whole and not acceptable little tolerable pieces. Not that it would matter but on top of all that were not talking about a future HOFer so be patient a few decent guards will hit the market next week. With the big trade today with the Pats all you need is one above average guard and our line will be set.
