“Softer Coverage” On The Way

(For those annoyed already by sleazy Richie Incognito, Joe presents a football take)

Tampa Bay drafted Charles Sims to catch balls out of the backfield. He was going to be their all-around threat. But now Sims cruises around the Bucs locker room on a scooter to protect his surgically-repaired ankle.

After the Bucs’ battering of the Bills on Saturday, Josh McCown explained one reason the Bucs need a running back with hands.

It’s a matchup thing, a byproduct of beastly receivers.

“Inevitably we’re going to start seeing more softer coverage because of our guys,” McCown said while talking about his 22-yard completion to Doug Martin on Saturday. “That was a play we set up and designed because the coverage dictated they were going to double [Vincent Jackson] and leave Dougie [Martin] singled up underneath.

“So it was really neat to see us put the work in this week, come up with that design, and then be able to win on that route. It was just really well done by Doug, through great patience and then to catch the ball. You know, he’s dropped a few balls in camp. And every time he does, he grabs me, we go to the other end and we throw. Catches, catches, catches. So you can’t say enough about the way Doug works and kind of pro he is. And so it’s neat to see him start returning to form.”

Yes, Martin is poised to get a massive workload (pay attention fantasy nuts). Bobby Rainey has had a rough preseason, as had the other healthy running back, Jeff Demps.

The way injuries evolved for the Bucs, it turned out a strong preseason was really needed from Martin, and the Bucs got it.

It’ll be an interesting year for Maritn, who’s also in a contract year of sorts. After this season, the Bucs must decide whether they want to guarantee the fifth year (2016) of Martin’s rookie contract. Otherwise, next year he’ll in the same boat Adrian Clayborn is in this year.

Here’s hoping Doug can get back to 2012 form. That’d be great.

And this is off topic, but I saw it earlier today and thought it was interesting: Tampa Bay Buccaneers:Although Clinton McDonald was signed for his pass rushing, his Run Stop Percentage of 25.0% is the best for defensive tackles. He has six stops on 24 run plays.

Interesting game vs bills. You can see why they drafted sims… backs will be running lots of routes and will be asked to catch a lot of balls… not just dump offs. i was surprised sims was drafted and not ellington or g gabe jackson. i really sucks he has such a significant injur!

So with Sims being injured…is Demps now a lock to make this roster?

  4. Tackleblockwin Says:

This just in: Incognito is officially cleared by NFL.

I thought Martin Martin was in his third year not fourth. Smh.

You need to brush up on your reading skills. It’s after the 3rd year that the team must decide on Martin’s fifth year. Wake up. –Joe

This guy is drunker than Incognito on a good day.

  8. Dougy balls Says:

Why say he is in A contract year and then put 2016 with it

Im for one happy D.Martin is healthy. He is a special talent and shouldn’t be worried about his option as much as A.C. His 1st year had beastly stats. Probably will this year too. Its sad C.Sims got hurt. He def was going to compliment D.Martin. I can accept D. Martin carrying the load.

I hope Incognito signs here, reads all the crap your talking about him, makes the pro bowl then stares you down while your interviewing him just to scare the hell out of you.

I thought Lovie left the Chicago media behind him but Chicago does travel well. Lovie brought attention to the Bucs, alright that’s a great thing but if you guys are goinig to slum it up like those slum lords than you are no better than the incognito you are trashing.

  16. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Why does it bother you guys so much anyway? He won’t start a riot like in Missouri and to my knowledge hasn’t killed his wife and stuffed her in the trunk of his car like a certain person that played for the panthers. The guy on the eagles said that he’d beat any n-word at a bar (he’s cool now) wow. But for some reason this Incognito cat just gets under the Tampa media’s skin, you guys need some serious therapy.

^ Glad I’m not the only one who sees this.

Vick killed and tortured dogs for F#$King money and pleasure. He is all forgiven now, greg hardy hit and threatened to kill his GF, would you not sign him either? Joe philbin should share a lot of this blame, he is soft and obviously had no pulse on his locker room.

If the man can play, he is worth it. The risk is minimal, he acts out, you cut him.
