Perhaps Offensive Line Needs More Snaps

Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune believes Bucs G Oneil Cousins and the rest of his offensive line mates could use some extra snaps of work Thursday.

Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune believes guard Oneil Cousins and the rest of his starting offensive line mates could use snaps Thursday.

So the dress rehearsal is behind us. The third week of the preseason has come and gone. Now lies the last game Thursday night at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway as the Redskins come into town.

This is usually a game featuring future Motel 6 managers, insurance claims adjusters, bread truck drivers and front men for haberdasheries.

Sunday, in his day-after-game press conference, Lovie said the starters won’t be playing much Thursday but admitted he is tempted to get recovering cornerback Alterraun Verner more snaps. Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune is of the mind there are other players who may need work as much or more than Verner, and they reside on the offensive line.

Appearing on Sunday Sports Extra on WFLA-TV Channel 8, Cummings believes if there is one area of the team that isn’t quite prepared for the regular season, it is the offensive line. Therefore, Cummings said, Lovie should consider getting those guys plenty more snaps.

“You know, maybe the offensive line gets a look?” Cummings said of starters perhaps playing Thursday. “They still need some work, I think. They may get some time in this game I think.”

It certainly wouldn’t hurt. And Joe isn’t so sure Oneil Cousins and Patrick Omameh are the starting guards in two weeks. We all know that Bucs general manager Jason Licht is going to be dumpster diving over the next week (or sewer diving in the case of Richie Incognito) as there will be hundreds of offensive linemen, and likely dozens of competent guards, thrown to the streets by cutdowns.

Joe would be very surprised if the Bucs don’t bring in a couple of offensive linemen before the Stinking Panthers come to town, and don’t be surprised if one of them finds his way into the starting lineup.

What in the hell is more snaps going to do when there is clearly a lack of talent they can play the entire game and week one they still will suck! The o-line that is not my BUCS!

  2. RastaMon Says:

Thing about the OL “play in the no game planned preseason games”….WAS they where all getting BEAT man on man….their players were Whopp’n our OL up and down the line and up and down the depth chart…….it will only worse when teams are actually game planning against our dish rag OL…..

You could give these guys 1000 snaps and they’re still going to stink. Bucs can’t win with these guards Call the 49ers

  4. CC Says:

The O line looks like a bad evaluation of talent by the current regime. Incognito will make them better but damn. Talk about making a deal with the devil.

You can’t be honestly asking that. Offensive lines traditionally take time to gel. How do they gel? Taking snaps.

You’ve been around for a while, I would think you already know that.

So far as a lack of talent, to be fair that is not entirely true. Obviously Cousins sucks, but the others are improving from game to game. That’s what happens when you get a lot of snaps.

I don’t know about that. Certainly, it is a mess of their own making, but once the line was blasted apart, they had to take who they could find.

After replacing 19+ players, you cannot expect all of the replacements to work out. At least the issues are focused in one spot. It would be worse if it was spread around.

Besides, I think maybe 1-2 of the oline guys will improve enough to actually be worthy of starting, and that will mean fewer spots to draft/sign for next year.

Since Warhop brought Cousins is Warhop the right Coach for us? Is Warhop wanting Incognito? Does Warhop have a connection with Incognito?

Maybe is not a Smoke Screen…

  9. Orca Says:

People keep talking about Boone… Last I saw, SF did not want to trade him. If they do, they’re going to want a high draft pick. I don’t see it happening.

Seems we were having this same conversation about Dotson a year , or two ago. The difference…a year or two of snaps. Not that difficult a concept. A lot of O linemen have taken a year, or two, to get up to snuff. Sucks for this year, but not disastrous , for the long term.

The Redskins have released their fifth round pick from this year’s draft, an offensive guard:

  12. Mr. Patrick Says:

Call the 49ers. Bucs are going to have to spend a high draft pick on a guard in the next draft anyway, so trade them that pick and get somebody who is still young and already proven

  13. Mike10 Says:

I’m giving a 5th, 4th at absolute best for Boone! But please stop making excuses for these guys.. they’re not good

tell me what have you seen that suggest in week 10 this going to be better here is what I know you can’t depend on help all the time and sometimes you just have to win the battle have you seen one guard on the team do that on a consistent bases yet, because I have not!

By the way Cousin is listed as the top guard on the team right now so I rest my case!
