Mike Evans: Touchdown Maker

August 22nd, 2014

Evans2Former NFL scout and NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah has crafted his list of NFL offensive rookie of the year candidates.

It’s a good list for Bucs fans because Mike Evans made the cut, but it’s also bad for two reasons.

Two of the other top-5 named are Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks, who looks lethal in their high-octane offense, and Carolina’s new giant target, Kelvin Benjamin. Damn that brutal NFC South.

Jeremiah picks Cooks as his No. 1 rookie candidate. Benjamin checked in one slot behind Evans.

3) Mike Evans, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
No. 7 overall pick

Evans brings rare size (6-foot-5, 231 pounds), catch radius and ball skills. I don’t expect him to put up big catch or yardage numbers, but I do believe he is the favorite to lead all rookies in touchdowns. He is a physical mismatch in the red zone, and Vincent Jackson’s presence will assure Evans sees single coverage on a consistent basis.

Those big touchdown numbers Jeremiah is predicting sure sound great.

Once upon a time, mattress-in-the-yard, blade-in-the-thigh Mike Williams led all rookie recievers in the NFL in yardage (964), receptions (65), and touchdowns (11) in 2010.

If Evans can deliver what Williams did, then Bucs fans will be dancing on Dale Mabry.

I honestly think he can bring more than that. We shall see

  2. Tom Edrington Says:

    Protect the football, Mike.

  3. BucsfaninChina Says:

Cooks really could not have found himself in a better system. Very little guy though, gonna be hard keeping him on the field I think.

  4. BucinNC Says:

Does he have a better year than Ty Hilton or Rey cooper?

Joe, most of your material now a days is recycled from other places. Would there be any way we could get some original content like that amazing Davin Joseph interview you posted. I am just saying that because I have already seen most of the content on your site before I visit your site. Just some constructive criticism, hope you can handle it and not fire back a smart ass comment like normal

Can’t wait to watch the Tampa buffalo game from the west coast they are showing it on nfl network live about time.

  7. BucBob1 Says:

The more he watches V-Jac’s game, the better he gets!

  8. Espo Says:

It’s tough to predict what numbers a receiver will put up when you have no clue if the quarterback will have time to get him the ball.

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

I expect some rookie rough spots for Evans early on, not saying he is’nt very gifted in size and ability. I will be amazed if a 20 year old rookie takes the NFL by storm.

What’s the over under on how many patriot players the bucs are bringing in after the first round of cuts?

  11. Andrew 1 Says:

And everybodys hating on Mike Williams, but those are pretty impressive numbers for a rookie in the NFL, and a 4th round rookie at that. 11 touchdowns? I personally don’t even see Mike Evans getting that much this year, the following years sure, but not his rookie season. Its a shame he couldn’t stick around longer, but he was a good player for us and nobody can convince me otherwise. Now its the Mike Evans show.

touchdown dropper until i see otherwise

  13. adamant Says:

robert9 – ridiculous comment. I guess you didn’t watch him play in college or training camp. Simply a rookie mistake that happened in a meaningless preseason game. He will have a very good year if he stays healthy.

Josh mccown was the one who. Challenged alshon jeffery and gave him chances to make plays. I think Evans will have a huge impact for this offense in his first year. I would see glennon being more like cutler and relying on Jackson more than any other targets. Mccown knows the defenses will be preparing for Jackson and he will take advantage of that

Were you not here during Joe’s awesome training camp coverage? He provided so much original content daily. Even with preseason winding down, Joe is still providing original content. Maybe I am not as well read as you are when it comes to all the “recycled” info, but I for one appreciate Joe passing along other things they have read because then I can see what other media heads are saying. I assume that I am in the majority when it comes to that. Maybe that leaves you at a disadvantage but I think we should still appreciate Joes hard work. They are certainly the best outlet for Bucs news. Would you rather be left with Pewter Report and Pat Yasinaskas? PR is okay; Pat makes me want to shoot myself.

  18. robert9 Says:

how is it ridiculous. this isn’t college.

it was an nfl game, albeit preseason. take off the glasses. his 1st shot at a TD and he blew it. so, yeah, thats my take. and they have also said he has trouble with routes.

I’m from the show me mentallity

Where ya been the past few weeks? Joe was out at training camp each day. Not sure how much original he can get? Joe was at One Buc three times this week. Not sure how much more original Joe can get than that?

This site always has and always will be a clearing house for Bucs news that interests Joe, with some original content thrown in, and always with fresh takes.

That is why I was, and still am disappointed we got rid of him. I believe he is that productive as a receiver, and can be better.

But MIKE EVANS YA’LL :D Exciting

  21. Owlykat Says:

This site is great Joe! Just keep up the good work. You also come out with articles on weekends while your competition is cooling it!

  22. Skyline Crew Says:

I wouldn’t worry too much about cooks. Too many receivers there and Brees favors Colston.

  23. Kevin#1 Says:

I’ll take Evans over Williams all day

  24. RJBucnut Says:

Stay out da clubs Mike!!! Wtf… At least we know he can brake a tackle. Those fat bouncers didn’t hv a chance. He was bobbin and weaving then did the ol leap frog over the car.

  25. Vico Says:

He’s 3rd only because of who is throwing to these rookies.
