Charles Sims Has Some Ankle Injury

August 14th, 2014

Rookie RB Charles Sims has an ankle injury and Lovie Smith said he will not play for the “immediate future.”

In training camp, NFL team officials do not have to be specific about injuries, nor is there a weekly injury report like during the regular season. What Joe does know is running back Charles Sims will not play Saturday against the Dolphins.

Sims was seen in a boot at the beginning of practice his afternoon.

After practice, Bucs coach Lovie Smith only slightly explained Sims’ injury, while reporting he will not play Saturday.

“Sims will not play,” Lovie said. “It’s unfortunate, his ankle injury. But that happens. That’s all we can say now. You saw him in the cast, the walking boot. That’s normally not a good thing. He won’t play in the immediate future, that’s for sure.”

No it is not a good thing and doesn’t sound good at all. It could be as mild as a sprained ankle or as serious as a broken ankle. Only the Bucs and Sims know.

The sad thing here is, for all the rookies on the team, none practiced or looked as NFL-ready as Sims; not even Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who has made a ton of splash plays but admits he is making too many rookie mistakes.

    Stealth….opening day

  2. SAMCRO Says:

Oh well, Simms is a cinch to make the 53 man roster anyway, so this will give Rainey, James, Demps, and FB’s more reps. Hopefully, it is just a sprain.

  3. Buccfan37 Says:

Let’s not rile up the angry fans any further. Pretend it is nothing to get alarmed about.

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

The only time injuries are not serious is when they happen to players on someone else’s team.

  5. Capt.Tim, Back from Davie Jones's locker Says:

    Tom- amen.

  6. Pawel Says:

So how long does it take to heal for ankle sprains mild or high?

  7. Pawel Says:

    or broken..

  8. Danimal Says:

Don’t worry we have 3-4 other very good backs !!
Wait why did we take Sims when so many very good guards were available ?
Here is where ya’ll tell me Lovie will Gel this talentless O-Line into something good. Just like he did in Chicago, wait a crappy O-Line is why he got fired in Chicago. Oh heck never mind.

  9. Stanglassman Says:

High sprain is bad, worse than a break most of the time. From what I remember I’m no expert but High sprain takes 6+, a break is 4-5 weeks.

Is he in a cast or walking boot?

  10. Stanglassman Says:

I see it’s a walking boot (sprain not a break) oand he isn’t using crutches so that part is good.

Actually a break is usually 4-8 weeks, more along the lines of 6. A high ankle sprain is a minimum of 4 weeks but could last as long as 6 months.

  12. Kevin Says:

Not like he is our starter. I’d rather see Mike James running hard helping us get first down with Martin catching passes. But what do I know I’m just a fan…

  13. Bob Says:

What’s to be alarmed about? If there is any area that we are loaded it’s running back. The dude is a rookie.. He has plenty of time to get his.. I’ve been extremely impressed with the low amount of injuries we do have.. Knock on wood of course.
Joe I get the feeling your not liked by Lovie. He seems to take issue with just about any question you ask. Are you feeling a little picked on?

  14. Stanglassman Says:

Yes Brandon that is what I said maybe I wasn’t clear. I only estimated 4-5 weeks considering his age and training staff. 6+ on the high ankle is 6 weeks minimum and like you said it could take many months to heal.

Did you see the picture of him walking (in boot) without a problem, it looks like he will be back in a few weeks.

    @rostaman 100 points
    @stanglass 100 points (crutches)
@ Joe no points for you

All you D.Martin haters still want to trade him?

  17. louden Says:

    a draft picks VALUE
= the comination of: Drafting spot + Talent of the player + number of simillar talented players at the same position +Team needs + overall team resources/picks … and team needs is not only for the upcoming season but with an eye on the future (players you want to keep and players that will eventually get replaced; its for example nonesense to keep an RB for 8 MIO a year because you can have and cheaper on with similar talent quite easy)

    get this:
even with two good guards i would raise doubts if the Bucs “are good enough” simply from overall talent standpoint (QB, WR, DL while good depth is talent good enough?, OL obviously, DB´s thats pretty much everything except RB and LB).

The totally wasted 3rd rounder destroyed just about everything and even the Mike Evans pick isn´t exaclty “wowing” – while Evans is a good player, it remains to be seen how good (and sure fire good WR would have been there even till mid-late 3rd)

But the 3rd killed everything, you just cant miss that badly from a VALUE standpoint and expect to field an great team year in and year out.

The Bucs were already short of picks thanks to another brilliant move (getting Revis), got rid of him to jump from an 4th to an 3rd rounder and then basically threw it away: the oppertunity to get 3rd round value + they lost an CB with incredible value – thats TWO MAJOR LOSSES WITH ONE MOVE – embarrasing and this team makes moves like that since years…. no wonder they are a basement sitting team

  18. louden Says:

to make it clear, i think it was right to jump from the 4th to the 3rd rounder and get rid of Revis, because this team had so many holes, you couldn´t fill everything in time – Revis becomes older and older just like V-Jacks and we couldn´t fill everything + affording the 16MIO contract..

@Danati74: You do not use common sense do you?

1st: No Martin hater, he´s a good RB but nothing special. He´s got good vision doesn´t have stone hands and thats about it.

2nd: keep the 1st points in mind >> he should not have been a 1st round pick
He is no AdrianPeterson, not even a Carlos Hyde (who was drafted 2nd or 3rd this year) – Cadillac Williams as example had breakout speed + tackle breaking ability – nickname wise they are tied + Cadilac played “in a different time”

3rd: even without Martin AND Sims we have Rainey James +
4th: He is an good RB and nothing more and there are plenty out there – no drama

  19. Ghost Says:

When you have a stable of RBs an injury doesn’t really effect you in the grand scheme of things. We saw that last year.

  20. JC De La Torre Says:

It’s funny, we want our team to draft the best player available but when they do then we scream “why didn’t we fill this need?”

Drafting strictly for need leads to busts in the league.

On the Bucs’ board, Charles Sims was BPA. And you know what? The kid looked pretty darned good in his first NFL game.

Why not let him get on the field before going on and on about how he was a mistake?

  21. Danati74 Says:

@ Louden. Do you use common sense?

So you put Rainy and James on the same talent level as Martin.
No doubt he is a 1st rounder and they are a 7th rounder and UDFA.
You remind me of Mark Dominick. You are amazing at eyeing talent.

“1st: No Martin hater, he´s a good RB but nothing special. He´s got good vision doesn´t have stone hands and thats about it.”

Did you look at his 1st year stats? Pretty amazing. Not an average RB stats.
If the Bucs didn’t move up to get him, then the Giants may have got him. They did pick RB the next few picks in that draft.

As for Cadillac. We didn’t see too much break out speed. We saw 4 very good games from him, then some broken legs.

You should go to the doctors, you need help.

  22. bob in valrico Says:

    Loudon
disagree with your draft pick take. Simms has far better chance of playing than a rookie 3rd round guard. He has already displayed pass catching skills
current rb’s don’t have.He can catch ball downfield. as for wide receiver there are few sure fire wide recievers after 1 st round. practice squads have a lot of wide recievers that lack either the speed, ability to separate, ability to come down with ball. even if they have the skills a series of injuries can keep them there.
