Remember Donald Penn

Bucs brass is hoping no-name guard Jace Daniels can be the next Donald Penn

Once upon a time, when the free agency bell rang in 2007, Tampa Bay shelled out big cash for a left tackle named Luke Petitgout, three years, $15.5 million.

Petitgout was coming off a broken leg with the Giants and had chronic back problems, but Chucky didn’t care. Petitgout was going to save his freakin’ O-line and keep Jeff Garcia from an early retirement into the comforting bosom of his renowned wife.

Well, that didn’t pan out. Petitgout lasted four starts before getting injured.

Some Vikings practice squad guy out of Utah State named Donald Penn, signed by the Bucs the previous season, stepped in and never missed a start at left tackle until Lovie Smith decided Anthony Collins was a better football player.

The point of all this isn’t about Penn. It’s about Bucs guards like new starter (for now) Jace Daniels, and reserve guard Patrick Omameh, guys who’ve never really had a crack at the starting apple.

Despite what Lovie advises, Joe has no problem overreacting to the heinous offensive line display the Bucs rolled out in their preseason opener Friday. However, Joe’s not going to overreact and just assume the Bucs have no guard talent on the roster.

Daniels, an undrafted Schiano Man out of Northern Michigan, could be the next Penn. Omameh could be, too.

The problem, though, is time. The No. 2-ranked defense in the NFL arrives in Tampa in 26 days. It sure would be nice if the Bucs were ready.

Problem we have is that we need two diamonds in the rough, not just one. That’s a tall order in 26 days. If Omameh is a guy worth a shot – why in the hell are they starting that turnstile Cousins? I swear he’s blackmailing the OL coach, because he keeps getting chances from that guy.

  2. Jim Walker Says:

I think it was the right choice. Penn is not worth $4.6 million considering his play last year.

  3. Phaneuf Says:

I will always remember last year when he got really mad at JAllen and then … on the very next play : the sack that was pure 1 on 1 football

  4. T-DUB Says:

i love that we have football to finally talk about. The first (pre)season game came and went, and now we’re to evaluate.

BUT, I am officially going to say that I am OVER the O-line talk!

I know its the most pressing problem but my gosh. Lets talk about how our kick off return only averaged 20 yards.

how about a story of that?!

Watching the panthers def play gave me nightmares. Hardy n Blackburn totally owned the line of scrimmage. We got a lot of work to do before we’re Carolina ready. And did you see the catch Benjamin made? wow! Off balance fingertip w tight coverage.

  6. Pewter Jesus Says:

Got to meet Jeff and his wife once. She’s very uh….distracting

  7. jo_mama Says:

Do you remember when we had a real coach. Jon Gruden.

If Richie Incognito was available and Gruden had a bad O-Line, he would pick him up in a second.

Lovie Smith was so bad he was fired from a team which he took to the super bowl.

    He will be fired again.

    We want to win now.

  8. Skoorb43 Says:

My only concern is why the “comforting bosom” link doesn’t work.

    It works. –Joe

  9. lightningbuc Says:

    Skoor,

Like Joe says, it works. Garcia is so damn poor he couldn’t even buy her a brush to get her hair out of her cleavage.

  10. adamant Says:

Uh, Jo_mama, Jon Gruden was also so bad that he was fired from a team which he took to a super bowl. Good point made by you. Not.

  11. Skoorb43 Says:

Jeff Garcia is doing a-ok. Anyway on the article. Is there a guard out there that you would throw that money at Joe. Is it Boone. Someone else. Other than Boone I haven’t heard a name that would be any better than what we have. I’m sure after some cuts happen there might be.

  12. BoJim Says:

What happened to all the Lovie’ love? 🙁

He was fired, like most head coaches are. However he brought in People and let them compete for the Job.

I thought Lovie was a great hire, then he did 2 things.

1 (the big one) Named McClown as the starter, without even letting them compete. He was a career back up.

    2. THe icing on the Cake, was seeing a Team with a worse recent history than the bucs, man handle us at the line. And then have Lovie Shoot down the idea about being Incognito in. Why? Other than his Church Going Ego.

Check your Ego at the door.

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

@BoJim- Didn’t take long, did it?!
We knew this was a position of weakness going in. That being said, there’s nothing you can deduce from 1 preseason game. I’m sure there will be continued, extensive evaluation until regular season starts. Let’s hope we have that proverbial “diamond in the rough” a la Penn.
    Go Bucs!

  15. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I have to agree with Jo Mama here. If anyone thinks Incognito will be a “distraction”, here is a distraction. Having a terrible O Line, and never being able to use all our skill people.

  16. jo_mama Says:

Warren Sapp put the hit on Clifton was awesome.

    We have no Sapp,

We have no Coach who would like to see that kind of toughness.

Games leading up to our bye week…..who do you see us beating?

    Panthers
    Rams
    Falcons
    Steelers
    Saints
    Ravens

I see us going 3-13 or 4-12 with a quaterback change in the middle.

  17. Louis Friend Says:

Like it or not, Incognito isn’t coming here. He did more than just cause trouble in Miami to earn his reputation. Much more. Read the man’s history sometime and ask yourself if you’d really want THAT kind of guy on your team? Because he’s not good enough on the field to warrant breaking your standards. He makes Jeremy Trueblood look intelligent, for the love of god. That by itself says something.

  18. eric Says:

Best Left Tackle in the league damn near threw up my lunch from laughing so hard you wasn’t the best in your prime now all of sudden you going to take the next step I’m not holding my breath!

  19. Louis Friend Says:

jo_mama, you think having Incognito makes that record any different? They will do better than 4-12, probably around 6-10. Neither record is worth taking a risk at destroying team chemistry.

Skoorb43 it worked for me. I think there should be more topics about Jeff Garcia’s wife and her comforting boosom.

Lets get the Boone Deal done.. problem solved.

  22. adamant Says:

Jo_mama – Incognito is hardly a savior and not worth the headache. In fact, who knows what kind of shape the guy is in. Last I heard, he was having a mental breakdown and bashing in his own Lambourghini with a baseball bat. I do agree that the O-line they put on the field on Friday was absolutely terrible. Jamon Meredith and especially Oneil Cousins do not belong in any starting line up. Either we give the young guys a shot (Daniels and Omameh) or we pick up some off the scrap heap when teams cut down. Honestly, the mistake was not shoring up the guard position in the offseason.

  23. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Jo_mama,

Your comments really aren’t worth responding to, but I just can’t help myself. Incognito is a locker room cancer in the purest sense of the word. You obviously have never played sports, so you have no idea how bad that can be for a team. The guy has been kicked off of 4 teams going back to college!!! You really think it’s going to work out here for him? You really want a raging maniac loose in the streets of Tampa? Aren’t there enough already, why would you want to import one? If you really believe he’s that good of a player, you are sorely mistaken.

As for Jon Gruden, what exactly did you see in his years here that would lead you to believe that? Incognito is not nearly old enough for him, number one. Second, if Gruden can’t get along with Simeon Rice and Keyshawn Johnson, what would make you think he would be able to deal with a scum like Incognito? Your revisionist memory is really kind of funny.

  24. The Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

Awww, all of us Bucs fans can’t get along now? Come on y’all, there is still time to figure this out and we might get a o-lineman or 2 once the cuts come or trade for Boone. Now T-DUB the 20 yard kickoff avg. isn’t that bad, since we have to catch it 5 to 10 years in the end zone, we’re really bringing it out like 25 yards. And jo_mama, Lovie has plans for the line and do we really want to see Glennon running around (or trying) like a chicken with his head cut off? He’s a sting bean and with our o-line issues he would be sack bait. Give it some more time y’all. Personally I’m all in with any o-linemen they can bring in. More the merrier.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’d rather trade 3 first round picks for Boone than I would to sign Incognito. I can’t think of too many people I’d rather like having less on our team than that lunatic.

  26. Harry Says:

Carmella is just insanely gorgeous. Can’t the Bucs hire Jeff as some kind of assistant coach to get Carmella back? 😉

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s not desperation time here guys. It’s ONE preseason game.
While there may be some merits(along with quite a few non) to bringing in Incognito, I think the Bucs will want to REALLY see what they have here first. You can’t REALLY see after one preseason game. Don’t get me wrong, it was ugly on Friday! I’m just saying let’s wait and see, we have 3 preseason games left to figure it out. After that…………PANIC!

bring him in and let him compete. At least he had a Lambo to Smash. He must be doing something right.

  29. Harry Says:

First, it is NOT just one preseason game. Everyone has identified this as a problem area for months. How long do you want to “wait and see”, when we are 0-8??

As Joe says: “… Joe’s not going to overreact and just assume the Bucs have no guard talent on the roster…”

You would hope so, BUT, if there is “guard talent on the roster” why are they holding it back and not putting it in the 1st preseason game so the ‘talent’ can develop and get valuable game reps?

I know how bad losing is, I know what its like to see black outs each week for our home games.

    —————-

The guy has been kicked off of 4 teams going back to college!!! You really think it’s going to work out here for him?
    ——————

Short answer – Don’t Care. Bring him in, if he shows he is better great. If not show him the door. Kurt Warner, Doug Fluite, Randy Moss, Bill Romanowski, all have been bounced around from team to team either because they thought they sucked or because they were a problem. They all turned out to be an asset.

Since Richie has been in the NFL has he ever broken the Law? Has he ever got into a fight with the locals? No and No.

Incognito’s Teammates had his back last year. That’s what you want in a Teammate.

The funniest Quote I ever heard was the following Text From Jonathon Martin to Richie Incognito

“I am going to give (Andrew) McDonald bath Salts & lock him in your house with a tranquilizer gun & a box of sand paper condoms.”

  34. DB55 Says:

Any grown man (with money, mind you) who still lives at home with mommy and daddy gets no respect from me and probably shouldn’t be on a fb field anyways. And that’s all I have to say about that.

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @jo_mama,

Wow, you are so wrong it’s funny. The entire team did not support him first of all. That’s a sweeping statement that is false. But as I said, I don’t really care about that incident.

Incognito isn’t going to make us go from a losing team to a winning team. Period.

So you don’t care he’s been kicked off of teams? You don’t care about the distraction he would bring? You don’t care about the message that sends to the other players? You don’t care how much of a cancer he is? SMH

Yes, he actually has broken the law. Nice job not doing any research whatsoever. Damn people are so freaking stupid!

So you don’t think Lovie has brought in guys to win games? Correct me if I’m wrong, but has the regular season started? I wasn’t aware our final roster was set already. Who did Gruden bring in with anywhere near this much questionable character to win games? Go ahead and give me some examples?

It’s terrible that Lovie is the first coach in the history of the NFL to want to have his guys!! Oh, the crime against humanity!!!!! He’s terrible!!!!

  36. Capt Tim., Back from Davie Jones's locker Says:

Yeah, no way a 2012 Probowl guard could help this team! We’ve got Oneil cousins!
The stupidity level is running high again
The only thing Incognito is guilty of, is trusting a cowardly Sissy.
The guy is texting back and forth with all the Dolphin Linemen. He claimed he was Incognitos friend
Yet the whole time, he was Fowarding all the text to his mommy, the lawyer- so she can sue somebody.
That’s the kind of guy we used to beat up in locker rooms.
It’s the kind of guy that needs to be beaten up in a locker room.
I doubt he makes the Niners team.
He sure won’t be a probowler
It’s too bad that his lack of manhood has damaged the reputation of a Probowl guard.
Meybe his mommy can sue somebody about that

You say he has. And I need to do Research.

FYI – He has never been arrested or charged with a crime since he has been in the NFL.

Now who needs to do Research before they open their mouth. If you were wrong about this what else are you wrong about.

Do your research before you excuse someone else of not doing their research.

If its good enough for them, its good enough for me.

Incognito was caught using the Dreaded “N” word and yet his team mates still came out in defense of him. What does that tell you.

It tells me, its good enough to bring him in to camp and let him compete.
