Evans Talks “Crisp” Factor And Jimmy Graham

There’s a clear pattern to the impressive catches Mike Evans has made in practice. They all seem to be over the middle of the field.

But that’s new terrain for the Bucs’ first-round draft pick, who offered Joe a little detail yesterday.

When it was just Evans and Johnny Football cranking out big plays at Texas A&M with maniacal smoothness, Evans wasn’t a very diverse receiver.

“Being in college, I only played on the outside, so I’m more comfortable outside, but I like being in the middle. Josh [McCown] finds me, and I’m a big body in there, and he can just throw it up and I can go get it,” Evans said. “You don’t have to be as crisp in there, I guess. Our tight ends can get open easy in there, so they kind of use me like that at times, like a Jimmy Graham, I can just run and use my big body.  I guess they’re using me like that kinda.”

What Bucs fans aren’t seeing yet from Evans are the 50-50-style jump balls the Bucs expect him and Vincent Jackson to win consistently during the regular season. There’s too great an injury risk on those to see them in practice and, of course, a quarterback also must have time to breathe in order to execute one in a preseason game.

As for Evans working all over the field, look for that to continue. The more diverse and unpredictable he can be, the more the Bucs offense should hum.

With our Oline problems, I wonder how far downfield our recievers can get with a 1/2 step drop by the QB?

  2. Louis Friend Says:

I was just thinking the same thing TBbucfan – we’ll lead the league in jump ball screen passes if the pocket keeps collapsing like that.

He Doesnt sound too sure of himself. “kinda” “I guess” what is that all about. ?

  4. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

And how did the above story work out for him this past Friday night?

  5. Theodore Says:

Any word on Evans tender hammy?

  6. BucFan20 Says:

After Friday night we must not be getting the whole story. Yes our receivers are catching passes but only because our defense is not allowed to knock McCown on his arse! If our defense is that good, how the hell does he have time to throw the ball?

Buddhaboy, he’s a kid in his early 20s in his first training camp going from sandlot football with johnny manziel to a (supposedly) more calculated and diverse scheme run by a mad scientist type. there’s probably alot of things that are brand new to him and he isn’t yet comfortable explaining. also, he may need some media training, this is probably the first time in a couple years a journalist is asking him about something other than Johnny Football

    Evans is soooooooo young.

VJax is the perfect mentor for him.

I hope we keep Vjas til the end of his contract and actually honor his contract.

I think the NFL is too cut throat and cold with contracts.

    Players deserve more benefits.

And I suggested an NFL D league a lot last year!

Dom is right on this. There DEFINITELY should be an NFL D league.

Been a quiet camp for 13

  10. Bill Says:

There will be an NFL D-league in the next 5 years, I’ll say probably sooner. The NCAA will make sure of it, because paying college players goes out the door with the creation of a D league. It’s obviously already in the works.
